Re: Achievement Awards to Outstanding WOmen Students

In order to further accomplish our goals of encouragement to women inengineering, the Society of w0men Engineers is sponsoring achievementawards to outstanding women in engineering this year. The awards areto go to one woman in each class (Fr, So, Jr, Sr) of the EngineeringSchool, to be presented at an Awards Banquet to be held in April. Eachaward will consist of $100.00 and a plaque. we wish to begin our selectionprocess within individual departments, which will give us, we believe, the most fair representation of candidates. From departmental recommenda-tions our selection committee, which will consist of Deans, facultymembers, and representatives from industry, will choose the recipiants.

we are asking you to help us by recommending from one to four womenstudents from each class in your department. Base your judgement onG.P.A. or exceptional qualities you or a member of your faculty may knowabout. Leadership abilities and activities should count substantiallyfor Juniors and Seniors.

A recommendation form is attached. we would appreciate your response bymid-February. we will then contact your nominees and ask them to completea personal data sheet and a short essay (one page or less) fer our selectioncommittee. The final decision will be made in late March.

we will appreciate your cooperation and support and hope that you will joinus at our banquet in April to honor the outstanding women students.

Ms. Bowman and Ms. Liles:

Your explanation of the purpose of the achievement awards and the costsassociated with the Awards Banquet was helpful and I appreciate your takingthe time to write. I personally and Cummins as a company are very muchinterested in providing assistance to SWE organizations. We lend supportto SWE at several schools. Your letter will help me to explain what assis-tance you require and its purpose.

When I returned from NCSU, having discussed some of your requirementswith Prof. Richardson, our Personnel Department was enthused also. I hadplanned on trying to provide some financial assistance for the banquet thisspring. The Mexican peso was devalued the latter part of February and thishad a devastating effect on our business since they were buying one-third ofour production. We had to lay off ten percent of our work force directlyrelated to manufacturing because of the loss of orders. The Personnel De-partment has said that we are still very much interested in providing fi-nancial assistance to SWE, but that we will need to defer pursuing thisuntil the fall.

I would appreciate it if you could keep me informed of plans for nextyears banquet. I would also like to have some information about attendanceand costs of the upcoming SWE Awards Banquet. Thanks in advance for yourhelp. If I can assist you in any way, please let me know. I can be con—tacted at 812-379-7212.
