What a great weekend of SUN and FUN on the Beach Strand in Carolina Beach this past weekend. Featuring three of the best bands in Beach Music today, the morning got kick-started with The Craig Woolard Band at 11:00,
followed by The Band of Oz at 1:00. To close out the 27th Annual Carolina Beach Music Festival was none other than Jim Quick and Coastline who brought the house down with everything from classic Beach to closing out with Led Zeppelin. What a day for the Island. The festivities started on Friday night at the SeaWitch with The Holiday Band where over 400 enjoyed a few beverages and a lot of shaggin’. The next morning the lines started forming by 8:00 am and the Festival was on. After many hours in the sun, the great crowd of thousands slowly left the beach with another festival under their ‘belt’ and some headed over to the SeaWitch for the Shag Contest which was enjoyed by a very enthusiastic crowd. Overall, it was a great weekend of fun-loving, sun-worshipping and shaggin’ delight. We look forward to seeing you next year on June 1st at the 28th Annual
Carolina Beach Music Festival.
1ST ANNUAL BLUEGRASS BY THE RIVER WAS ENJOYED BY ALL
Bluegrass was Back on Pleasure Island. The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce presented the 1st Annual Bluegrass By The River on May 12th at the Ft. Fisher Air Force Recreation Area. After being away for a few years, the folks at the Chamber decided it was time to bring this Family-friendly event back to its home – Pleasure Island!
This year featured a variety of bluegrass music with five of the best bands in the southeast. Starting out the afternoon was local favorites South of K from Kure Beach, NC. with their traditional and inspiring bluegrass selections. To mix it up just a little, we brought you The Mystery Hillbillies from Winston-Salem with their special renditions of blue-grass standards as well as some Patsy Cline and a little rock-a-billy to boot. For our third band, we welcomed the Donna Hughes Band from the Triad area. Donna is an award-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist that has written for and recorded with some of the best in bluegrass (Allison Krauss to name one). Ted Jones and the Tarheel Boys were back for their 3rd Pleasure Island Festival and brought their gospel-inspired, traditional blue-grass renditions to our stage all the way from Smithfield, NC. Rounding out the evening, we were proud to present the hot, young group from the hills of Harlan County, Kentucky – Cumberland River. Their hit song “Justified” can be heard on the television show of the same name on the FX channel. Overall it was a great day for Pleasure Island where Pickin’ and Grinnin’ are encouraged.

On a very rainy evening on Wednesday evening on May 9th , the Members of the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce got together at Atlantic Towers and along with tunes from Edge Entertainment. Delicious treats from O’Charley’s, Floral
Arrangements from Marshall Gardens, Chairs and Umbrellas from Wheel Fun Rentals and tasty treats from the Fuzzy Peach were treated to an inviting get-together with friends, new and old. We would also like to acknowledge the continued support
of R.A. Jeffrey’s Distributing for all of our events. After the announcements by Mike Worley (Our Chairman and owner of Edge Entertainment), Paul took home his share of the 50/50 raffle. The Chamber provided two tickets to the upcoming
Bluegrass By The River, which were grabbed by Rick Knott, while tickets to the Carolina Beach Music Festival were taken home by Dana Jackson. Cynthia Remahl picked up a gift bag provided by the Checkered Church, while Michelle
Cloninger took home a Bowling Party for up to 20 people on 2 lanes at the Cardinal Lanes Bowling Facility. Southern Digital Art.com provided beautiful artwork won by Amy Sawyer and Rhonda Sparks. To top the evening off, we gave away the floral arrangements provided by Marshall Gardens which were won by Janice Boroznoff, Louise May, Janet Knott, Billie
Bridges and the Atlantic Towers Board of Directors. Thank you for coming and see you next month. Please enjoy a few select memories from this evening.

ABC Lock & Key LLC Is locally owned and operated by Randy Everette. I have been a locksmith on the Island for over a year with Island Lock & Key and now have my own business for service of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach as well as coverage up to Monkey Junction. I have 5 years experience in the field and continue to receive additional training from the North Carolina Locksmith Association as well as other manufacturers who offer training. I am licensed (#1224) with the state and a member of the NC Locksmith Association. My wife and I along with our daughter and two dogs live on the island since our wedding a year ago and we just love it.
My goal is to serve the people and businesses on the island and surrounding area with professional, courteous, timely and pricing that is very reasonable. I am on call for emergencies as well as for appointments and do a wide range of services, lockout of home, auto and commercial along with auto key made from scratch for most vehicles, boats, ATV, mopeds, motorcycles and commercial equipment. People tend to have accidents and loose their keys and the sand on the beach eats them regularly! The security of your property is a priority to you and I can inspect and make suggestions or even resolve the issue for you, such as rekeying, adding keyless entry, repairing or replacing locks on your property. Even replacing doors and hinges due to corrosion or misuse. Property management companies and multi unit owners would really benefit from this. I am completely mobile and can meet you at a central location for the “DO IT YOUR SELF” home and business owner. I accept all forms of payment, cash, credit cards, debit, checks and billing. My family and I have found a home here on the island and plan to work, live and enjoy all it has to offer for a very long time. The people I have meet thus far are good hearted, friendly and down to earth. I look forward to getting to know more people and creating many new friends as time goes on

AQUARIUM’S ADVENTURE REEF
INVITES ALL-DAY PLAY
Get outside and play more. That’s the message from the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher, as the attraction opens a new outdoor play area, Adventure Reef. Adventure Reef dares children ages 2 to 12 to climb, crawl, wiggle, leap, balance, swing and slide their way to fun in a safe and engaging way. Adventure Reef features unique components—springy climbing cables, spinning bars, wobble pods—to flex children’s mental and physical muscles. In addition to the play structure, families can explore together to find fossilized shark teeth and other treasures in a new fossil dig area shaped like a spiraling nautilus shell. “This is not an average play ground,” said Aquarium Director Peggy Sloan. “Adventure Reef begs to be enthusiastically explored and conquered. The only limit to the fun is the child’s imagination.” A ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 11, officially opens the new play area. Generous donations from the North Carolina Aquarium Society and corporate partners Time Warner Cable, Inc.;
PotashCorp-Aurora; Pizza Hut, Inc.; and the Weston Foundation funded the construction of Adventure Reef. The Aquarium developed the play set’s innovative design with Landscape Structures Inc., a manufacturer committed to using U.S. vendors and offsetting their CO2 foot-print.

Letter From the Chair
Dear Members:
Well, the season is definitely here and we at the Chamber are moving in full force! Since my last letter in May, we have introduced a new festival to the island as well as begun the traditional festivities that thousands of people enjoy each year.
The First Annual Pleasure Island Bluegrass By The River was a great new festival that we introduced in May. The festival took place on the grounds at Ft. Fisher AF Recreation Center and included five great regional bands, food and craft vendors and gorgeous weather. Those three factors made for an awesome festival!
The 27th
Annual Carolina Beach Music Festival took place last weekend and all I can say is WOW! The weekend officially began on
Friday night with the CBMF Kickoff party with The Holiday Band. Although there was a threat of rain, hundreds of people came out to get their weekend started. Saturday morning came and as no surprise to us, people began lining the sidewalk waiting for entry into the festival. Due to that, the gates were opened 45 minutes earlier than expected. The three bands did a great job keeping everyone dancing throughout the day and the crowds grew as the day went on. Following the festival, hundreds once again came out to enjoy the shag contest. With over $4,000 in cash prizes, the competition was tough and the crowd received quite a show! Sandwiched between the two festivals, the boardwalk came alive with the season’s first fireworks display and music at the gazebo as well as, the Sunday night movie at the lake. These weekly events play a vital role in the vacation plans of thousands of families each year that visit our area. Our purpose is to bring tourism dollars to Pleasure Island and through these events, it happens! We are also seeing new businesses opening up and existing businesses making improvements and renovating. These are sure signs that Pleasure Island is a great place to invest in! As I have done previously, I want to send a huge Thank You to Gail and Greg and all of the people
who volunteer each week to make these events possible!
Sincerely,
Mike Worley 2012 Chairman-Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce
