Notes to the Conductor

Carl Böhm (1844–1920), a German pianist and composer, is regarded as one of the leading German songwriters of the 19th century, and wrote such works as “Still as the Night,” “Twilight,” and “The Fountain.” More than a songwriter only, his chamber music—mostly quartets and piano trios—was extremely popular with both amateurs and professionals. This work is stylistically representative of his song oeuvre. This lovely song offers the opportunity to teach compound meter, isolating excerpts collaterally with rhythmic exercises, and working on smooth string crossings. Extended positions are featured in the cello part with accidentals sprinkled throughout the other parts as well. A beautiful soli section will be popular with cellists against a moving bass line.
