It is estimated that 13 million workers in the United States are potentially exposed to chemicals that can be absorbed through the skin.* Disposable gloves offer protection from potential irritants and help prevent contamination. ComfortFlex® gloves are engineered with different materials and compositions for protection, flexibility and strength.

Factors to Consider When Selecting Disposable Gloves

1. Consider Environment and Application

Disposable gloves provide protection from incidental contact with hazardous materials such as solvents and acids and help keep high sanitation standards in applications such as food processing. Glove selection should be based on the type of exposure and the nature of the hazard.

u

Colors can be associated with different parts of the manufacturing process, and can also provide unique benefits such as:

XuBlack | Hides dirt

XuBlue | Easily visible when working with food

Disposable gloves are available in a variety of materials to provide the best combination of protection, dexterity and cost for different applications. In-use performance can vary widely depending on the application. Choosing the right material is critically important.

2. Consider Materialu

Additional Selection Criteria

Pros Cons

XuResistant to many chemicals and solvents

XuModerate stretch

XuSome nitrile glove components can cause accelerator-related skin irritation

LatexXuBest fit, comfort and flexibility

XuSuperior grip in wet and dry environments

XuMay cause allergic reactions in some individuals

XuOils degrade latex gloves

TripolymerXuExcellent strength and stretch

XuGood chemical resistance

XuMaterial blend is costly

XuMay cause allergic reactions in some individuals

VinylXuCost-effective solution for short-term use

XuEasy on/off

XuLow durability

XuLimited dexterity

PolyethyleneXuMost economical choice for short-term use

XuEasy on/off

XuDoes not stretch

3. Consider Material StrengthuStronger gloves last longer and decrease chances of contamination. The strength of a glove (tensile strength) is determined primarily by the type and thickness of the material. Magid measures mil thickness at the fingertips, palm and cuff per ASTM requirements, but references only fingertip thickness. A thicker glove material generally provides a better level of protection, but a lower level of tactile sensitivity. Materials have inherently varying levels of strength.

4. Consider ElasticityuElasticity is how far the glove will stretch before tearing or breaking. If a highly elastic glove snags, it will stretch and remain intact. A rigid glove will tear more easily. Higher elasticity can also reduce hand fatigue. An elastic glove will flex with the hand, while an inelastic glove will limit mobility.

5. Consider Finish and LengthuIn wet or oily environments where precision is required, a textured glove can provide better grip and control. When the user needs additional protection from splashing, or if the glove will be immersed in liquid, an extended cuff can provide protection above the wrist.

Key Terms

Tensile strength – a measure of the force required to pull a glove until it breaks.

Elongation – a measure of how much a glove can be stretched before it breaks.

Thickness – measured in millimeters (mm) in three locations fingertip, palm and cuff, thicker gloves may provide better protection but a loss of dexterity.

Length – a standard disposable glove is 9.5 inches (240 mm), longer gloves provide additional protection.

FDA Compliance

u The US Food and Drug Administration places regulations on three types of food additives – direct, secondary direct and indirect food additives.

u FDA Food Contact Regulations (21 CFR177.2600) covers indirect food additives such as gloves in a list of materials that are inherently safe, classified as GRAS (generally recognized as safe).

u The components in all of our gloves are CFR 21 177.2600 compliant and are acceptable for use in food handling applications.
