I sincerely hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year whatever you did and wherever you spent it, and that by the time this latest Catalogue, Edition 112, reaches you your year has started off well.It’s been a hectic start to 2013 for Carey’s Pipe & Tobacco Shop with discussions about new pipe ranges, new tobaccos, and the introduction of some new technology designed to make the link between our catalogue and website yet more seamless (please turn to p30 for more details).Sticking with Edition 112 however, our front cover features for the first time a Carey 9mm range introduced only a few months ago, the Giotto. The brief for these pipes was ‘classic simplicity’, and the use of a light stain ensures the graining is the star of the show.Meanwhile the success of the recent Somali Meerschaums has led to a new range, this time 9mm pipes. Using the same meerschaum blocks as previously, but in slightly different finishes and shapes, I am confident they will prove to be as popular and as much of a talking point on forums and pipe smoking sites as last time!Within the Guest Brands we are also delighted to be running some previously unseen Barlings. Harking from the most recent Manx period of production these pipes may not bare much resemblance to those delicate designs of the late 1800s and early 1900s for which Barling became so famous, but the quality of the briar and depth of colour cannot be denied. A great entry into British pipe making history.And finally, Tobacco. Our mini-samplers are enabling more and more people to try our tobaccos at low cost, and when customers realise the quality of our Private and Boutique Blends is second to none, combined with lower prices than the main brands, buying from Carey’s Pipe & Tobacco Shop and Tobacco Club makes even more sense. Our recent discussions with one of the pre-eminent English manufacturers has left us positive that we will further expand our range in the coming months…

A hand rusticated finish from Northern Italy, where all of our Meerschaum lined pipes are made using densely compressed Meerschaum stone, which is placed inside a Mediterranean briar bowl and bored out, leaving a cool absorbent bowl lining.

Recently we’ve noticed a large increase in the number of customers visiting our website using ‘mobile devices’ such as iPhones and iPads, thanks in part to the speed and convenience they provide. In our bid to embrace technologies that enhance the buying experience, particularly for those of our customers who enjoy receiving our catalogue but also enjoy the convenience of online browsing and shopping, we are introducing Quick Response (QR) Codes…Put simply, QR Codes are a quick and simple way of transporting people from the physical world (e.g. our catalogue) to the online world (e.g. our website). The first step is to download a QR Reader App (basic ones are free), for example from the App Store if using an iPhone. Once installed on your device, you simply open the App and follow the instructions using the camera function of your device like a supermarket barcode scanner. The App will read the code and may prompt you for an action, for example to open a website. The simple example you see here will take you to the Tobacconist section of Carey’s Pipe & Tobacco Shop website, but over time we will incorporate QR Codes into specific pages within our catalogue and link them to the same products on our website, from where one can read reviews, look at alternative products, browse further images and ultimately, if desired, purchase. With our promise to try to despatch goods within 24 hours of receiving an order (tobacco excepted due to Customs regulations) this means customers can receive goods much faster than if ordering via the catalogue order form. And it won’t only be products featured – we could for example reference within the catalogue an article or some feedback, or maybe a blog post or product video, which you can then access directly using these codes. It is really only limited by our imaginations…But I should also stress for those less inclined towards technology that these QR Codes are simply an additional method for customers to interact with us and will not be replacing any of the methods currently used, such as phone and post. So if you’d rather not use them please do not feel obliged – but at least when you see one within the catalogue you’ll know what they are and maybe one day, just maybe, you might be tempted to have a go!
