A lesion in human cervical epithelium infected with human papilloma virus (HPV16). Early viral proteins (green) bind to and reorganise the keratin filaments (red) towards the edge of the cell. A scientist studying a sequence of DNA looking for alignment of the sequence relating to the Lipl32 gene, which is present among pathogenic leptospires (a genus of Gram-negative bacteria). The alignment was performed to find a consensus sequence that could be used to generate a set of DNA primers and a probe to be used in a real-time PCR assay. This assay will allow scientists to target the specific DNA sequence to detect the presence of this DNA

Humulus lupulus, or ‘hops’
A herbaceous climbing plant with coarse-toothed leaves and ‘hop’ flower heads. The cone-like flowers are traditionally used in beer brewing for their distinctive, bitter flavour. The young shoots have also been eaten as a vegetable, rather like asparagus. Extracts containing lupulin have also been used as a galactagogue (to increase the flow of milk in nursing mothers).
