Coming out of college I was looking to become a teacher. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any open positions in my licensure area. I did however come across a paraprofessional opening in the Avon School District. Before I went in for the in- terview, I was not fully aware of all the work paraprofessionals do. During the interview, I quickly realized how important para- professionals are to a classroom. They are a jack of all trades. Not only are they there to assist the teacher and help students out, but they also need to have a firm understanding of the material being covered. This allows us to reteach any concepts a student may be having difficulties with. Since being able to wit- ness how different teachers run their classrooms, I felt that the best possible career move was to become a paraprofessional. I feel more prepared for when I have my own classroom, than when I did coming right out of college. What skills or certifications do you think are needed to be successful in this field? There are many skills you need to be a successful parapro- fessional. You are not only a teacher’s aide in the classroom, you also need to be an educator, a counselor, a motivator, a negotiator, and most importantly hold an understanding that you chose this job to help kids be successful in the classroom. Paraprofessionals do not get as much credit as they deserve, so you have to be someone who does not need the limelight to perform your job at the highest standard. What changes have you seen in the last few years in your industry? Due to more students diagnosed with specific learning disabili- ties every year, and class sizes growing, I believe the importance of the paraprofessional field is also growing. If given a large class, it can be hard for even the best teachers to meet every student’s individual needs. This is where a paraprofessional comes in. Having a second set of hands in a classroom can only help make sure that every student’s needs are met. What is the best part of your job? The interactions that take place between students and other staff members are by far the best parts of my job. Whether I’m helping a student achieve that “ah-ha!” moment or a student reaching a personal goal, seeing the sense of accomplishment and excitement in the student’s educational process is one of the reasons why I pursued a degree in education. Do you have any words of advice for someone con- sidering a career in your field? There is not a more fulfilling career than being a paraprofes- sional. Although one does not tend to get the same recognition as a teacher, paraprofessionals play a key role in the classroom. If you are contemplating a career in education and have yet to find a teaching position, I would highly encourage you to spend at least a year as a paraprofessional. The knowledge and expe- riences gained through my work as a paraprofessional has given me a greater insight into the teaching profession and I am now better prepared for when I have my own classroom. Teacher assistants are more of a supplementary position, as opposed to teachers, who hold a primary position. Therefore, teacher assistants’ employment opportuni- ties may depend on school districts’ budgets. Schools are more likely to eliminate teacher assistant positions rather than teacher positions when there is a budget shortfall, and more likely to hire teacher assistants when there is a budget surplus. Employment of teacher assistants is projected to grow 8 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Rising student enrollment along with state and federal funding for education programs should affect growth. Nationwide, there were 1,308,100 Teach- ers Assistants nationwide with approxi- mately 37,200 in the state of Ohio.
