This career path shows many of the options available for civil engineers who havechosen a career in government, such as local, state and federal agencies. Someleave the technical engineering path as they progress and move into governmentmanagement. At this level, additional leadership training and education in publicadministration or business management is recommended. Whether planning tostay on the technical track or not, government engineers should seek additional

Consulting oers a multitude o career opportunities in rms ranging in size romless than 10 people to more than 1,000. At smaller rms, civil engineers havethe opportunity to work on numerous varied projects, design challenges, andmanagement-related activities. At larger rms, they have the opportunity to ocuson specic projects, design expertise, and business management, depending onthe core competence o the rm. Whether at a small or large rm, civil engineers
in consulting generally start with basic engineering evaluations, computations, anddesign, which opens the door to many career paths and fexibility to change paths ithey so choose.
Civil engineers in academia are involved with teaching the next generation oengineers and developing engineering curriculum that prepares students with theknowledge they need to succeed in their careers. This career path requires anadvanced degree, including a doctorate in most cases. Engineering educatorswrite grants to obtain research unding and work with graduate students to conductresearch aimed at developing advancements in the eld o engineering. In industry, civil engineers work in diverse settings including manuacturing,technology, pharmaceuticals, public acilities and utilities, and many othersproviding goods and services to the public. They manage large plants, oversee thedesign/construction o acilities, and obtain critical environmental, construction,and operating permits. Civil engineers are instrumental in new ventures requiringenvironmental site assessments and easibility studies. They make signicantcontributions to decrease costs, increase prots, and produce smaller environmental
ootprints by developing more ecient processes, implementing waste minimizationprograms, and nding creative solutions to a wide range o issues.
In construction, civil engineers may work or a contractor to create the builtenvironment, transorming engineering and architectural design drawings rompaper to reality. They are involved in projects o every size and complexity romairports, bridges, and tunnels to local roads and the water and wastewater lines toour homes. The core civil engineering curriculum provides an excellent oundationor the critical thinking necessary to work in the construction sector. Additional
