Six myths about the Career FairSix Myths About the Career Fair:Don’t let fear of the unknown keep you from having a great experience at the Career Fair! We’ve gathered six of the most frequent myths about the fair and debunked them with a little bit of reality.

Myth #1: Employers at the Career Fair are not looking for my major.Reality: There are over 30 organizations at this year’s career fair who would like to recruit students from all majors. A sampling of these include: Abercrombie & Fitch, Agilis Systems, AlphaSights, Anheuser-Busch, Bain & Company, BJC HealthCare, Bloomingdale’s, Boom Lab, Centene Corporation, Epic, First National Bank, Gap Inc., Kraft Heinz Company, LMI Aerospace, Michelson Organization, Morningstar, Inc., Nasdaq, Navigant Consulting, Inc., OneSpace, Oracle/NetSuite, Peace Corps, Procter & Gamble Co., Red Ventures, Sense Corp, Walmart US eCommerce, World Wide Technology, and more.

Myth #2: Some of the companies just tell you to apply online.Reality: Some organizations require you to funnel all applications through their own online system. The purpose of a career fair is not to turn in an application; it is to make a connection with the recruiter, so that your application is recognized when you do apply online. Use the time you have with that recruiter to show them your personality, tell them a few things that make you unique, and make an impression that they will remember when they are sorting through applications back at the office. Don’t forget to ask the recruiter for a card; this gives you all the information you need to follow up after the fair, and make sure the recruiter remembers you. When you do apply online, mention how you talked to them at the WashU career fair, and how impressed you were with their company.

Myth #3: It’s hard and time-consuming to navigate the Career Fair.Reality: To reduce your stress about the fair, it is essential to prepare in advance! Here are some ways to prepare:

• Review the organizations attending. This is published on CAREERlink, and also in this Career Fair Guide. Get a sense of the layout and which companies appeal to you.• Target 5-7 organizations that you would like to approach. • Research your top organizations. Find out what they do and how they do it. Most organizations’ websites will give you a sense of the company goals and culture, and the types of job openings they have available. All of this info gives you talking points for starting a conversation with the recruiter.• Relax! If you’ve prepared well the career fair can be a fun experience and great practice on networking. If you feel that an interaction with a recruiter does not go well, stop and take a minute to regroup. Seek out a Career Center staff member and ask for advice. Every recruiter is different; don’t let one experience ruin the next one.

Myth #4: I have no idea what to wear!Reality: For tips on what to wear to a career fair, check out the Career Center Pintrest Page at: www.pinterest.com/wucareercenter/what-to-wear-that-works/ When in doubt, the best choice is a suit jacket and matching pants or skirt. It is not appropriate to wear the same outfit you would wear when you go out to party. Wear comfortable shoes

because you will be standing the entire time you are there, and walking a lot! This is not the time or place to break in new shoes. Avoid sky-high heels, low cut tops, or skin-tight anything! Remember you should be hired because you would be a great asset to the company, not because of your clothes.

Myth #5: Approaching an employer is scary.Reality: Approaching an employer is easy, once you practice. Here are the basic things you must prepare:• Research your top 5-7 organizations. Find out what they do and how they do it. Most organizations’ websites will give you a sense of the company goals and culture, and the types of job openings they have available. All of this info gives you talking points for starting a conversation with the recruiter.• Prepare your 30-second intro pitch. This saves time by answering several questions in less than a minute, giving you more time to learn about the organization. In this short amount of time you can convey:o Who you areo Why you are interested in this companyo A sample 30-second pitch might sound something like this: “Hi, my name is Sue Smith. I am a junior here at Washington University studying International and Area Studies. My passion is exploring other

cultures. I see that your company has offices in 5 other countries, can you tell me about your global strategy?” The conversation will flow from there.• Practice your pitch. Start the fair with the companies that you are least interested in. This is a great way to practice your pitch and warm up. Once you get to the ones that really excite you, your pitch will be perfected.• Don’t forget to ask for a card or contact info. Ask the recruiter if you can follow up with them to submit your application. This is your key to being recognized when the recruiter is sorting out your application among others. Take a second to write down anything that will help the recruiter remember you when you reach out to them again. Make note of anything that will help you remember them.

Myth #6: I’m just a Freshman, I’m not looking for a job yet.Reality: Many organizations at the fair are hiring internships as well as post-graduation positions. As a Freshman, it’s never too early to be thinking about how you can use the summer to gain some great experience that will help fill out your resume. Do research on the organizations hiring interns and make a plan to visit only those companies at the fair. The experience you gain while networking at the fair will be incredibly valuable when you are ready to look for your first position out of college.

So, I went to the Career Fair... what next?

You went the Career Fair and you even managed to get over that stomach-turning nervousness enough to actually talk to some recruiters. What should you do now? The thing about Career Fairs, and really any networking opportunity, is that they can become a waste of energy if you don’t take it a step further. Sure, you had a great conversation with a recruiter at Company X, but they probably had great conversations with a number of students. You need to spend some time to make sure those connections go somewhere. How do you do that, you ask? Funny, we happen to have a few ideas right here….

FALL 2018 CAREER GUIDE STUDENT LIFE 23

Follow Up Sounds easy enough, but many students forget that meeting a recruiter just one time won’t get you too far. Shoot him/her an e-mail, re-emphasizing your enthusiasm for the organization or a specific position. If they aren’t hiring at this exact moment, maybe ask if the recruiter has a younger employee who you can talk to about their experience. This gives you another foot in the door, so to speak.
