All positions begin on May 18th with a week long expense paid orientation at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia, followed by a 12 week internship ending on August 16th. REGION 3: THE MIDWEST

FWS CDIP Wildlife Refuge Specialist

Intern will be responsible for the inventory, evaluation, and scanning of Ottawa NWR historical management documents/data/information including old remote sensing aerial imagery, photographs, and other historical documents or historical print materials. Intern will be responsible for inventorying Ottawa NWR’s uncontrolled personal property and updating the uncontrolled personal property database. Intern will be responsible for assisting the Biological Program with day-to-day operations. Duties will include invasive plant management; monitoring and mapping wetlands; marsh monitoring surveys including secretive marsh birds and frogs; and other biological program duties. Intern will be responsible for assisting Visitor Services Program with day-to-day operations. Duties may include conducting environmental education; administering interpretive guided programs; staffing Visitor Center; and other program support as needed. Assists with maintenance and construction work such as trail maintenance; grounds cleaning; landscaping; fencing; boundary sign posting; painting; minor repair of equipment, facilities, and infrastructure; Intern may be required to provide work direction for volunteers or YCC enrollees while performing maintenance or natural resource management related work. Intern will need a driver’s license and may be expected to operate light trucks, passenger vehicles (e.g., small bus, tram, or electric vehicle), or all-terrain vehicles.

FWS CDIP Biology Intern

Intern will assist in a variety of Wetland Management District (WMD) management activities which will include but is not limited to waterfowl, invasive plant monitoring and control, wetland and grassland restoration, native prairie seed collection, GIS mapping, trail and fence maintenance, waterfowl banding, public education, posting boundaries, etc. Intern will work with WMD staff, volunteers and other interns to achieve the mission critical goals of the WMD.

FWS CDIP Biology

This position will be primarily focused on working within the biology program at the Refuge. However, the intern may be involved in cross programmatic experiences including assisting in public events, environmental education, and assisting with the maintenance program as needed. The majority of the intern's time will be spent working on tasks related to habitat and species management and monitoring and associated biology projects. The intern can expect to have the following assignments: invasive species mapping, monitoring and treatment, weekly waterfowl and water level monitoring, water management and water quantity monitoring and modeling, fisheries surveys using fyke nets, mini-fykes, hoop nets, and seining, mobile acoustical bat surveys, and light maintenance such as weed-eating, mowing, and beaver dam removal. The intern must possess a valid drivers license.

FWS CDIP Visitor Services Intern

The Visitor Services Intern interacts as a team member of Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). Diverse in habitat and community, Shiawassee NWR has many challenges that are waiting to be solved. This internship will allow students to use and develop skills through the art of environmental education and interpretation. The intern will work directly with the Visitor Services Manager and staff to assist with partner projects on site and throughout the community. The intern can expect to greet visitors, conduct interpretational tours, teach environmental education, travel, and other duties as needed. The Visitor Services Intern will help with Visitor Services operations and maintenance of our facilities. Intern will be able to review and suggest alterations to programs offered by Shiawassee NWR.

Assists in collecting and recording information on habitat conditions, water level readings, aquatic plant production, etc. Assists in banding of waterfowl and other wildlife species. FWS CDIP Visitor Services Intern

As a part of the Visitor Services Team the intern will be one of the first people visitors contact at the refuge. The intern will greet and orientate visitors regarding public activities, regulations, and programs. Contact with visitors will range from indoor visitor center contacts, to outdoor roving contacts on trails and at observation areas. The intern will also be involved with environmental education and interpretation programs on and off site. Duties may also involve preparing and delivering programs to groups of all ages. The intern will assist and lead session for day camps and weekend public programs. On the refuge the intern will be expected to maintain public access areas, stock brochures, track seasonal phenology and use photography or videos to share refuge sightings through social media. The intern will also have opportunities to shadow other staff in different refuge divisions and assist with various refuge projects.

Visitor Services Intern

The Visitor Services Intern will serve as a liaison with the public working closely with volunteers, permanent staff members and other interns. Assigned duties may include: opening and closing the Visitor Center; developing and presenting programs for refuge visitors and school groups (e.g., nature walks, auto tours and environmental education programs); working on special interpretive projects (e.g., brochures, news articles, exhibits, signs, the website, podcasting, producing short videos about the refuge and its habitats/wildlife/plants etc.) checking and responding to phone messages; planning, organizing and conducting special events (e.g., Children's Fishing Day, Youth in the Outdoors, etc.); staffing the Visitor Center information desk; assisting volunteers; cleaning/maintenance of the Visitor Center, exhibits, grounds, and vehicles; posting updates on SNHA's Flickr and Facebook pages; assisting with other responsibilities as assigned. Job shadow days with other departments will be provided for the successful candidate.

FWS CDIP Biological Intern

Biological interns assist staff at Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge with day to day operations. Duties include habitat restoration (20%), clerical work (20%), visitor check-in (20%), monitoring wildlife populations (15%), measuring and monitoring vegetation (10%), general refuge maintenance/operations (10%), and data entry (5%). Habitat Restoration and Management (20%) Interns will assist staff with all forms of management that occurs on the Refuge. Habitat management actions could include (but not limited to) mowing, herbicide application, wetland restoration and management, and prescribed fire. The level of involvement with these actions is dependent on the individual and their qualifications.

Clerical Work: Interns will assist staff with miscellaneous clerical work throughout the year. Visitor Check-in: Interns will be expected to assist with the public use responsibilities which include (but are not limited to) visitor check in, overseeing the showing of the safety briefing, answering visitor questions, overseeing visitor check in at the entrance gate, presenting environmental education programs, and conducting refuge tours. Monitoring Wildlife Populations: Interns will assist staff in completing routine surveys and census of a variety of wildlife. Interns will assist in collecting and recording information on habitat conditions, water level readings, wildlife demography, experiments, or any other project that Refuge staff is involved in. Measuring and Monitoring Vegetation: Interns will assist staff in completing vegetation measuring and monitoring projects as assigned. Projects will consist of (but not limited to) forest inventory, invasive species monitoring and control, and fire-effects monitoring. Projects will be assigned by and overseen by permanent Refuge or Fire staff. General Refuge Maintenance/Operations: Interns will assist with maintenance and construction work, such as (but not limited to) fencing, boundary posting, painting, and structure maintenance. Interns will be required to operate passenger vehicles and light trucks.

FWS CDIP Resource Management Intern

The objective of the internship is to provide hands-on learning about the diversity of tasks involved with the management of a National Wildlife Refuge. Work will include habitat restoration and management of wetlands, forests, and grasslands, endangered species management, water level management and monitoring, invasive species control, breeding bird surveys, bat surveys, trail maintenance and creation, habitat restoration planning, environmental education, boundary posting, and general maintenance. Familiarity with plants and animals in the Midwest and field equipment such as 4WD vehicles, trailers, GPS are beneficial but not required. The position will primarily involve physical outdoor work in potentially adverse natural conditions including: heat, biting insects, poison ivy, and uneven and wet terrain.

The responsibilities of the internship are as follows: Helping answer visitor questions and providing information to the general public at our visitor center. FWS CDIP Biology Intern

Duties include: Invasive plant monitoring, photo-plot monitoring, biological surveys (gopher tortoise), data input, environmental education and outreach, and assisting staff with projects and general maintenance. The selectee would assist staff with maintenance of equipment, grounds, trails, and facilities. Some duties would involve assisting visitors and delivering educational outreach programs to the community. Lake Woodruff NWR consists of scrub/shrub, pine flatwoods, swamps, freshwater marsh, and oak hammock habitats. Man-made impoundments supply food and habitat for wintering waterfowl and other species. This position would assist staff with water manipulation and monitoring of these impoundments, which is necessary during summer months. River otters are in abundance along the rivers and springs. Manatees use Lake Woodruff and it's tributaries. The refuge manages lands around the lake and it's tributaries including a few islands. This position may be involved in prescribed burning operations in different habitat types. The refuge does not currently have education/outreach staff; however, opportunities for outreach programs are abundant. This position could provide much needed outreach to the community and assist partners with educational programs about the refuge.

Primary duties will include vegetation monitoring; data entry; report preparation; light maintenance; educating the public; and invasive plant species inventory, mapping and eradication (including the use of herbicides). Interns will be working long hours and some weekends and holidays as necessary. Field work is in marsh and forest communities, typically in hot, humid conditions with numerous biting insects. Boat work required. Interns must be in good physical condition, possess a valid driver’s license, have good communication and organizational skills, the ability to work well with others, live in close quarters, and be an enthusiastic field worker.

FWS CDIP Visitor Services Intern

Assist with Rhode Island NWR Visitor Services Program; includes managing and operating the Complex's Kettle Pond Visitor Center through volunteer support; planning and delivering on and off-site interpretive and environmental programs including kayak tours, seining, fishing and archery programs. The Facilities Intern position will be working closely with refuge staff in a field environment completing diverse tasking assignments. Some of these include: trail management, building maintenance on historic lighthouses located on coastal islands, Biological team support and other support tasks. Training will be conducted on site for all job tasks. We have historically given our interns a well rounded experience with exposure to all aspects of refuge operations. Physical abilities required are able to work outdoors, operate brush saws and other hand tools, drive pickup trucks, hike and walk a distance of a mile or more with equipment, able to be on the water.

FWS CDIP Visitor Services Intern

The intern will have the opportunity to work with underserved communities/groups such as inner city youth, sight impaired, etc. They will be expected to lead multiple 2-3 day mini-camps for children, and programs focusing on ecological/environmental lessons. There may also be volunteer opportunities with research scientists at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. They would also get experience in a full range of visitor services work including communicating information to visitors; leading Environmental Education and interpretive programs; assisting with refuge special events; and creating exhibits, fact sheets, and other written interpretive materials. They will also have an opportunity to explore and experience other types of work that occur on a refuge. A valid State Driver's License is required for the position.

FWS CDIP Biological Intern

The intern will work with refuge biological staff to control perennial pepperweed and other invasive plants; measure changes in salt marsh vegetation, hydrology, bird use, and fish use resulting from climate change and habitat management activities; monitor nesting piping plovers. The intern will work to develop and deliver environmental stewardship, outreach and environmental education programs. Field work will occur in salt marsh, beach, and shurbland communities where the intern will encounter biting and stinging insects, flooded ground, and hot, humid weather.

The intern will have the opportunity to assist with grounds/trails maintenance (mowing, weeding, invasive plant management), building maintenance, and general exposure to construction, equipment and boundary posting. The intern will work on maintenance projects such as small engine maintenance and repair, vehicle maintenance, bike trail work and hiking trail work, building maintenance, painting and custodial upkeep. The incumbent will also have an opportunity to work with our Biological Team and assist the Friends of Cape May NWR with Visitor Services opportunities. FWS CDIP Facilities Intern

The facilities intern position would assist the refuge's facilities team with ground maintenance (mowing, weeding, invasive management), building maintenance and general exposure to construction/historic resource rehab/storm water management etc. The intern would be working on major and minor maintenance projects (painting, road work, building maintenance, invasive plant control), finish mowing of the refuge quarters and office buildings, working with the YCC (including going on a day trip with the group), helping facility manager and deputy facility manager in the office (with various data calls, information gathering and helping to plan maintenance projects). In addition, the individual will also have an opportunity to work with the Biological Team and the Visitor Services team on projects and special events. There will be opportunities to visit a remote Alaska village to resupply, learn local plants and wildlife, and to fish. If time allows, the interns may accompany the Refuge Information Technician from Togiak on a jet boat trip on the Togiak River to educate refuge visitors about appropriate camping, travel, and fishing methods to reduce negative impacts on refuge visitors, wildlife, and habitats. Training will be provided in working and living safely in brown bear habitat, firearms safety, and avoiding bloodborne pathogens, among other topics. The interns will complete the Motorboat Operator Certification Course.

FWS CDIP Environmental Education and Visitor Center Intern

Kanuti Refuge National Wildlife Refuge seeks an intern to be based in Fairbanks to assist with various local events and to help develop and present curriculum for middle and highschool students at our annual science camp. The camp is designed to bring western science and traditional knowledge together in an outdoor setting. The goal is to create a supportive learning environment where Alaska Native Elders, students, and staff all gain more information and greater perspective of fisheries science, wildlife ecology, fish and game management, and traditional skills. The intern will work with staff, volunteers, and local partners and assist with logistics for the camp. The entirety of the week-long camp is held outdoors and the intern must have camping experience. There will also be an opportunity to work at the Arctic Interagency Visitor Center located in Coldfoot, Alaska. The intern will staff the visitor center, engage with the public, and assist with bookstore inventory. In addition, the intern may work with other staff for other projects on an as-needed basis. Successful intern will be independent, flexible, motivated, a self-starter, and have environmental education experience.
