Marine and coastal areas can be assaul ted by sal t spray as wel l as sand. These elements act as
sand blasters onto f ine f inishes . The sand and dir t can l i teral ly be “ground” into the f inish i f
not washed of f before pol ishing. Some exposures a t sea have more wind than others or more
direct sun than others . These condi t ions vary great ly and there is no speci f ic bot tom l ine as to
how of ten your furni ture should be cleaned and restored. Your par t icular instal la t ion needs to
be evaluated f requent ly in order to opt imize per formance and maintain the desired aesthet ic .
Al l outdoor furni ture is best protected wi th f i t ted furni ture covers or by seasonal ly s tor ing
indoors during harsh weather. In areas wi th higher a i r pol lut ion levels , humidi ty, sal t , or high
daily temperature variances, perform the recommended maintenance routines more frequently.

All o f our teak, mahogany and ja toba are plantat ion harvested premium woods. As wi th a l l nat-
ural ly grown and harvested woods, color and grain var ies on each piece of handcraf ted
furni ture . As par t icular ly s t rong, decay and water-resis tant species , these woods do not expand
or contract excessively wi th changes in mois ture or temperature . Lef t a lone, they wi l l age
natural ly to a beaut i ful s i lvery-grey pat ina, which many prefer and is a major reason for
speci fy ing natural hardwoods.
As you read through the fo l lowing care and maintenance instruct ions , you wi l l f ind the s teps

twice as long as teak sealers . Our environmental ly- f r iendly solut ion is 100% water based,
non-f lammable, and isn ' t greasy so your c lo thes s tay c lean. Because of the organic nature o f the
solut ion, i t remains resis tant to mold and prevents black spots on the teak.

Inspect your hardwood furni ture regular ly for s igns o f wear and tear to determine whether i t
requires a new appl icat ion of t reatments . I f you want to keep the hardwood’s or ig inal color, this
wi l l require an appl icat ion of high-qual i ty o i l . In ocean environments , this may need to be
appl ied several t imes per year. To prevent any fungus growth, make sure that the teak is per-
fect ly c lean and dry before you t reat i t .

Tiempo's teak veneer should NOT be sanded.
Jatoba wood has a red-brown tint. We recommend Golden Care® Castillo Hardwood Protector

In the absence of regular maintenance, the high qual i ty o f our teak turns to a lustrous s i lvery
gray pat ina when le f t in i ts natural s ta te , which is sometimes preferable . To promote the
weather ing process o f teak, wash the teak regular ly especial ly during i ts f i rs t few months
outs ide. Do so on a sunny day i f possible and use a mild l iquid detergent wi th a teaspoon of
bleach in a gal lon of water. The bleach wi l l accelerate the weather ing act ion of the sun. Af ter
the teak is washed wi th the soap and the bleach, r inse the furni ture thoroughly wi th c lean water
and le t i t dry. As the teak begins to weather, the grain begins to l i f t . You may want to l ight ly
sand the f ine “hairs” which r ise when the teak begins to weather. Your s i lvery-gray pat ina wi l l
evolve at a di f ferent pace depending on i ts environment . Wind, sal t spray and sun wi l l a lways
weather the teak more quickly.

These products are very e f fect ive in removing s ta ins that may not remove wi th ordinary

Water Spott ing
Water spot t ing on the f inish is usual ly a resul t o f mineral and sal t deposi ts in the water. The
water spot t ing can also be a resul t o f pol lutants or sal t in the rainwater. The problem can
easi ly be remedied by using an auto paste wax. This wi l l promote “beading” of the water
( i .e . runof f the sur face) wi thout a l lowing sur face dir t to dry on the f inish. This wi l l a lso make
the furni ture easier to c lean when i t becomes dir ty. We recommend using a product such as
Meguiar’s® Cleaner Wax (www.meguiars.com). Water spotting may be more pronounced on darker
f rame colors and in par t icular coastal areas . Al though the water spot t ing may reoccur a f ter an
extended per iod they can be removed easi ly by using an automotive quick detai ler such as
Meguiar ’s® Quick Detai ler (mist and wipe) .

Many metals are s t ructural ly weakened by the oxidat ion process , but not a luminum. Aluminum
can actual ly be made s t ronger and more durable through a process cal led 'anodiz ing ' .
Anodiz ing involves placing a sheet o f a luminum into a chemical acid bath. An electr ic current
passes through the acid, causing the sur face of the aluminum to oxidize (essent ia l ly rust ) . The
oxidized aluminum forms a s t rong coat ing as i t replaces the or ig inal a luminum on the sur face.
P 1 0 0 4 / 1 7
The pores are then sealed af ter dyeing to increase corrosion resis tance and color re tent ion.
The resul t is an extremely hard substance cal led anodized aluminum.
G E N E R A L C A R E & M A I N T E N A N C E
The marine environment is one of the harshest condi t ions on Earth. To extend the l i fe o f your
aluminum furni ture , wash i t o f ten to keep contaminates f rom bui lding up. Give special care to
the bot tom sides o f furni ture , s ince these areas do not receive the natural rinsing of rainwater,
and the area is shielded from the sun and usually does not dry completely or as quickly as the rest
of the f rame. I f the underside is over looked i t may resul t in s ta ining or pi t t ing. Regular f resh
water washing wi th a mild dishwashing l iquid wi l l keep your anodized aluminum bright and
beaut i ful .
A L W A Y S
• Clean often, and do it thoroughly. Wash often to keep contaminates from forming or building up.
• Clean anodized aluminum with mild soap and water, sof t towel or sponge.
• Rinse thoroughly and completely wi th direct f resh water. The important point is to c lean and

• When using metal protect ion products be sure they are formulated for anodized aluminum.
• We recommend MAAS ® brand wipes and pol ishers .
N E V E R
• Use bleach or chlor ides . They have a tendency to leach on the aluminum, which could lead
• to s ta ining and pi t t ing.
• Use abrasive cleaning products . Never use s teel or brass wool , wire brushes, pol ishing
• wheels, rubbing or polishing compounds. These items will remove the anodizing and lead to pitting.
• Use concentrated alkal ine base solut ions , many detergents fa l l in to this category.

Acryl ic is incredibly res i l ient mater ia l , but i t should be handled wi th care . Special care
should be taken when moving furni ture wi th acryl ic tops , as the acryl ic can be shocked and
crack or break. Acryl ics require very l i t t le maintenance; however, they can become scratched,
smudged or dir ty as wi th a lmost any smooth hard sur face.
For dirt, dust and smudges, we recommend cleaning with commercial products that arespecifically
intended for c leaning acryl ic such as Bri l l ianize®, Feron’s 1 For Al l Cleaner, or Pledge®

Never use harsh or abrasive chemicals such as ketones, aromatics , es ters , halogens, window
cleaning sprays , a lcohol , ki tchen scouring compounds, or solvents (such as acetone, benzene,
gasol ine, carbon te t rachlor ide, or thinners) . Do not use ammonia-based cleaning solut ions on
the acryl ic ; these can eat into the sheet and cause i t to craze. Never wipe clean wi th a dry

To improve the appearance of scratches, they may be able to be buf fed out wi th a plast ic res tore

The sanded s ide of the glass should always face down; i t should never be used as the top ( ie the

We also recommend regular ly c leaning wi th a s tone cleaner formulated wi th a neutral pH, such
as Feron’s 1 For Al l Cleaner ( there are many high qual i ty c leaners on the market ) . Never use
harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners . They can scratch, pi t , and etch the sur face of the s tone.
Spi l ls have the potent ia l to s ta in and mark near ly every counter top sur face. Porous s tones that

Use coasters under beverage glasses to avoid mois ture r ings .
Grani te and marble which have become dul l can be rejuvenated by using a commercial c leaner
