volunteer projects completed by our Pacific Life Good Guys

Pacific Life celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2018. As a Company with one of our core values dedicated to Community and giving back, we celebrated this milestone by engaging and supporting our employees with the causes they care about the most. We mobilized our workforce to volunteer at special community service projects with large-scale impacts, raised our Matching Gifts Program donation match to 150% of employees’ contributions, and engaged our financial services business partners to build three KaBOOM! playgrounds. We reinforced our commitment to charitable giving with every dollar invested in improving the livelihood of our communities. We are proud to report that, to date, Pacific Life and the Pacific Life Foundation have provided more than $109 million in funding over the past 34 years to nonprofits serving the communities where our employees live and work, in addition to countless hours of volunteer time.

Our accomplishments in 2018 include grants totaling $7 million distributed to nonprofits and 260 volunteer projects completed by our Pacific Life Good Guys, the Company’s employee volunteer teams in Orange County, California, Omaha,

Nebraska, and Lynchburg, Virginia. Other highlights from 2018 include:

■ $2 million in funding committed to the University of California, Irvine Foundation in support of the LIFEvest Financial Literacy Program at the UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business.

■ $392,000 in emergency funding to the American Red Cross to support various disaster relief efforts, including the California wildfires, Virginia tornado, and hurricanes that devastated the United States in 2018.

■ $60,000 in college scholarships, in partnership with the nonprofit Life Happens, benefitting students who have lost a parent who didn’t have the protection of life insurance.

■ 22,300 packages of teddy bears, Dr. Seuss literacy bags, and STEM kits assembled through our 150th Anniversary volunteer events, as well as completed our 11th KaBOOM! playground build.

The power of corporate responsibility at Pacific Life allows us to make a positive contribution in the communities in which we do business, live, and grow. But we cannot do this alone. It is within the collaborative relationships with nonprofit organizations and the drive of our passionate and generous employees that our community efforts really come to life and make a difference in our neighborhoods. We are proud of the work we have accomplished with our nonprofit partners in 2018.

OTHER MAJOR GRANTS

The LIFEvest Financial Literacy Program, hosted by the Center for Investment and Wealth Management at the University of California, Irvine Paul Merage School of Business, is an on-campus residential program dedicated to helping underserved ninth grade students from Southern California. The program, now in its ninth year, is designed for high school students who have the potential to be first-generation college students. The program strives to strengthen an understanding in financial matters, expose students to a college campus, encourage admission to a college or university, explore various career fields, teach social etiquette skills, and inspire confidence and success in all areas of life. The Pacific Life Foundation’s investment will help to expand the nature of the program, going beyond a student’s participation in the one-week residential program by helping follow and engage participants throughout their high school careers, further encouraging and preparing them to attend college. Additionally, Pacific Life employees will have the opportunity to mentor these aspiring youth as they plan and prepare for college.

American Red Cross 2018 Disaster Relief Funds

The Pacific Life Foundation provided support to the American Red Cross in response to natural disasters that occurred across the nation. These funds supported their efforts to provide safe refuge, nourishing meals, health services, and comfort to those affected by disasters. A total of $392,000 was contributed in support of: California Wildfires Fund, Southeast Hurricane Relief Fund, and Tornado relief efforts that impacted western Virginia and the Lynchburg area. Additionally, the Foundation provided matching funds for employee contributions to relief efforts.

SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE INVESTMENTSPacific Life has invested $5.9 billion in assets related to socially responsible efforts in underserved and low-income communities, as well as environmentally green efforts. We have also made commitments of an additional $1.3 billion toward future investments.

MOBILIZING OUR WORKFORCE

GOOD GUYS COMMUNITY EVENTSThe Pacific Life Good Guys, family, and friends participated in a wide range of after-hours volunteer projects nearly every week throughout 2018. From distributing back-to-school backpacks to K-12 students, to food sorting and distribution at local food pantries, wrapping holiday presents for home-bound seniors, and supporting fundraising galas, we celebrate the passion and dedication of these devoted individuals who give freely of their own time to make a difference in our communities.

1For more than 150 years, Pacific Life has been committed to empowering success in the communities where our employees work and live. Volunteering since 1985, our Pacific Life Good Guys are dedicated individuals working together to have a positive impact on those most in need. Whether participating in a community service project in the office or after-hours on location at a nonprofit, we engage and mobilize our workforce to make a positive impact in our communities in many different ways.

150TH ANNIVERSARY COMMUNITY PROJECTSIn celebration of Pacific Life’s 150th Anniversary, we mobilized our workforce to support five company-wide, large-scale volunteer events at each of our four major business locations.

Pacific Life joined forces with business partners Edward Jones, M Financial, and PARS to build KaBOOM! playgrounds for youth-focused nonprofits across the country. Playgrounds were built in St. Louis, Missouri, Portland, Oregon, and Huntington Beach, California and will provide more than 4,250 disadvantaged youth with a safe and fun place to play annually.

KABOOM!

LIFE LESSONS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMFour $15,000 college scholarships were funded through the Life Lessons Scholarship Program for students who lost a parent without life insurance. While the loss of a parent or guardian is one of life’s most difficult ordeals, these scholarships helped aid the financial burden of attending college. Pacific Life mobilized its employees to volunteer their time in reviewing scholarship applications to help determine the final scholarship recipients in California, Virginia, and Nebraska.

1. Assembled 8,300 Read Across America literacy kits for book-hungry students at local Title 1 schools. 2. Removed over 2,040 pounds of trash from local waterways, helping make a difference in the fight for trash-free shores. 3. Stuffed 4,000 Battalion Buddies teddy bears for Operation Gratitude to provide comfort to children while their parents in the military are deployed. 4. Packaged 10,000 STEM kits for Child Creativity Lab, to foster the next generation of critical thinkers through hands-on exploration of STEM concepts using renewable materials, impacting more than 20,000 students in Title 1 schools. 5. Beautified three K-12 schools, improving landscaping, adding blacktop games, and installing new library furniture. In total, more than 2,000 students were impacted by the improved education settings.

SUPPORTING OUR EMPLOYEES3TS OF EDUCATIONThe Pacific Life Foundation has been committed to strengthening the learning environment through the 3Ts of Education Program where grants, specified for Technology, Teacher Training, or Textbooks, are awarded to K-12 schools with concentrations of children and grandchildren of Pacific Life employees. In 2018, $534,500 in 3Ts grants were distributed to 147 schools in the communities where our employees and their families live.

MATCHING GIFTS PROGRAMPacific Life and the Pacific Life Foundation support the passions of our employees and the causes they care about the most. In honor of Pacific Life’s 150th Anniversary in 2018, the Pacific Life Foundation matched eligible employee donations to nonprofits, colleges, and universities at an increased rate of 150%. In 2018, $363,842 in matching gifts were awarded to 442 nonprofit organizations and 69 colleges and universities nationwide. In addition, the Foundation matched employee donations to the United Way’s Community Impact Fund.

150TH ANNIVERSARY GOOD GUYS GRANTSIn celebration of Pacific Life’s 150th Anniversary, the Pacific Life Foundation awarded grants each quarter to selected nonprofits where the Pacific Life Good Guys had volunteered. At the end of each quarter, our dedicated employees who volunteered that quarter were invited to vote to determine which organizations received the unrestricted grants. In total, $60,000 was awarded through 40 grants to nonprofits in our communities.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT GRANTSEvery year, the Pacific Life Foundation supports its employees by making contributions to nonprofits for which Pacific Life officers serve as members of the nonprofit’s board of directors. $422,500 in grants were given to 35 nonprofits in 2018, providing general operating and programmatic support.

CARING FOR OUR ENVIRONMENTMarine Mammal and Ocean-Focused Efforts (toward a pledge of $2,000,000)

Support for whale preservation, conservation of marine mammals, and improving the health of our oceans continues to be a focus area for the Pacific Life Foundation. To date, the Foundation has provided more than $14.5 million to support these types of environmental efforts. Our annual funding commitment continues to provide support for the creation and implementation of an ocean information system to reduce whale entanglement in crab fisheries (The Nature Conservancy), conserve roughly 25,000 square miles of habitat area off of New England from destructive bottom-dwelling fishing methods (Oceana), a reduction in the devastating impacts of bycatch by working with fisheries and policymakers (WWF), as well as the execution of the annual International Coastal Cleanup across 100 countries, removing 21 million items from coastlines (Ocean Conservancy).

$400,000

$25,000 Bolsa Chica Conservancy

Founded in 1990, the Bolsa Chica Conservancy offers science-based and standards-aligned classes and guided tours, educational exhibits and displays, research, restoration of degraded wetland and upland habitats, and propagation of native plants for use in restoration projects. Through the Bolsa Chica Wetlands Interpretive Center Enhancement Project, the Conservancy aims to upgrade and expand the existing structures with modular units that improve educational value and enhance the experience. The new Interpretive Center will serve more than 50,000 guests upon completion.

$50,000 Crystal Cove Conservancy

The Crystal Cove Conservancy is focused on preservation, education, and conservation initiatives that will cultivate our planet’s next generation of environmental leaders and ensure that Crystal Cove, and places like it, live on for generations. The Foundation’s grant supported the Heritage Legacy Project, which includes restoration of 17 historic cottages, as well as support for new and expanded marine educational programs.

Green Initiatives: Building Upgrades to Increase Efficiency

Pacific Life replaced the 45-year old, original roof on its Newport Beach headquarters building, resulting in an energy-efficient, high-performance roof membrane system. The Newport Beach headquarters also converted all of its lawn areas to more water-efficient, drought-tolerant native vegetation. These efforts, combined with numerous other upgrades and improvements over the last 10 years, have reduced our consumption of electricity by an average of 31%, natural gas by 73%, and water by 32% in our two largest office buildings.
