M ore childr en ar e killed every year as passengers incar crashes t han b y any ot her typ e of injur y.

To reduce the risk of SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH , readthis owner’s manual and your vehicle owner’s manualbefore installing and using this child restraint. Using a childrestraint makes a big difference. By properly using thischild restraint and following these instructions (and theinstructions that accompany your vehicle), you will greatlyreduce the risk of serious injury or death to the child froma crash. Do not be misled by the commonly used term

“safety seat”; no restraint system can prevent all injuries inall crashes. M any properly restrained adults and childrenare injured in motor vehicle crashes, including relativelyminor crashes. A properly used child restraint is the bestway to minimize injuries to the child and to increase thechances for the child’s survival in most crashes.

W hen t o Put Your Chil din a Boost er Sea t

Booster seats raise the child up an d help to position th evehicle lap and shoulder belt correctly. When t he child ispr operly rest ra ined in a booster seat , their risk of injuryin a ll types of crashes is reduced, as the lap and shoulderbelt provides excellent restraint of both t he upper and low ertorsos. It is important for th e child t o sit p roperly wit hin t hevehicle seat belt s. When t he vehicle seat belt is buckled, the lap belt should be low on the hips, just t ouching thethighs, and th e shoulder belt should lie across the middle ofthe shoulder. If t he child leans out or m oves th e belt behindthe back or places it un der the arm, it w ill not p rovide theint ended restr aint .

There are a num ber of th ings to consider when decidingwhether the child is ready t o sit in a booster seat, including:the weight and height ra ting on their current child seat, the

child’s own w eight and height, t heir maturity, and the seat- ing positions available in your vehicle.

How is a boo st er seat used? Using a booster seat is very similar t o buckling yourself int othe vehicle: • Read the instruction manuals for both the booster seat

and the vehicle before you start .• Put the booster in the back seat in a location with

a lap and shoulder belt. Never u se a bo ost erwit h only a lap bel t , as th is could cause seriousinjuries.

• After the child is in the booster, pull the lap and shoulderbelt across him/ her and buckle it.• Check that the shoulder belt lies across the middle of the

shoulder and t hat the lap belt is low on t he hips, justtouching the thighs.

29

How can you t ell if your child is ready to t ransit iont o a boost er seat? You should consider using a booster seat if t he followingconditions apply: • The child is mature enough to sit in the booster seat and

not put the belts under their arm or behind t heir back.• The child is approaching the weight or height limit of the

child restraint th ey are current ly using.• If you have a vehicle that does not have a tether anchor -

age but has lap/ shoulder belts available in the back seat,a booster seat may provide better protection t han aninternal harness seat wit hout the tether.
