HD-DV Cameras

Set upEstablish your connection with the NAS server.

Access it via: My Computer > click ‘Other User’ and enter your standard Garth Hill username and password.

Find the correct folder area on the server and check its contents.

Switch on the HD camera to VCR mode.

Make sure that the ‘iLink’ option is switched off – you can check this by scrolling through the Menu options.

The purple cable will need to be plugged into the USB 6 slot on the front of the Media computer. The smaller end needs to be connected in the HD DVD port.

Don’t connect at this stage!

New project

Select HDV 1080i30 when using this camera

Location: this must be for the NAS drive. You will need to manually browse to select the folder. Name the project accordingly.

Once you click OK, you will be taken to the main project screen.

Connect the camera to the computer – you will hear the USB noise to confirm it is connected.

Now, hit F5.

SettingsOne of the tabs at the top right show the settings of the capturing process. When using the HD camera, the settings should read as below.

Note: the program has recognised that this is an HDV device.

The video and audio folders should state Same as Project.

If the camera is connected properly, it should say Stopped at the top of the screen.

If you are unsure if the camera is connected, click Options and it should tell you whether the device is online.

LoggingOn the right hand side of the dialog box you will see several fields:

Setup

Capture: Allows you to choose to import audio, video or both

Log Clips To: Shows you where your capture clips will be saved

Clip Data

Tape Name: The name of the tape you are capturing from (whatever you have titled it, this will become important later)

Clip Name: The name of the clip that you are logging

Description: A description of the current clip can help you keep track of things later

Scene, Shot/Take, Log Note: These fields are for additional identifying information that you may want to tag the clip with

Timecode

Set In: Set the in point of the clip (where it will begin capturing from)

Set Out: Set the out point of the clip (where it will stop capturing)

Log Clip: Logs the clip information for later use, and places an offline file in your Project window. Offline means that you have logged the clip but it is not captured yet.

Capture

In/Out: Captures the previously logged in out points

Tape: Captures the entire duration of the tape

Scene Detect: Attempts to detect the break points on a tape and turn those into separate clips as it imports

When the device is online, you can control the video and play “through” the program. Below is a screen shot of what this will look like. (Do not worry if there are lines running through the video, this will not appear on the final capture.)

From this screen, you can manually record the clips you want to use, using the red record button, as you would do on a typical camera.

Using the Set In/Set Out featureUse the mouse “slider” to find where you want the clip to begin – this is your Set In time.

Use the mouse “slider” to find where you want the clip to end – this is your Set Out time.

(Use the viewing panel and camera controls to have your timings prepared.)

Once you are happy with the timing, click Log Clip.

This is the screen that will come up – make sure the Clip name is the same as in the “Logging Panel”.

Your clips will be logged in the Project window to be captured later – they are currently known as “Offline”. Repeat these steps until all the clips you want have been logged. You can also log multiple tapes in the same logging session.

Once you have finished “logging” using the Set In/Out feature, your Project bin will look like this:

As you can see, the clips are logged but not coming up as available to use (this is what the purple arrow means).

Select all of the clips that you wish to now capture.

Right click for Batch capture.

Click Ok through the next menus, unless you wish to change any settings.

It will ask for a tape – this should still be in the camera, unless you have logged clips from several tapes at a time.

The camera will then automatically set itself up to start capturing. The capture frame will open again and the top message will say Seeking – it is looking for the first clip.

If a clip is not captured, you may need to repeat the process for logged clips (usually singular ones). You can leave the machine and camera until it has finished capturing.

Using the “Tape” optionThis will tape the entire tape that is currently in the camera. The screen will appear as below and will play through the camera. It will not divide into separate scenes and will create an extremely large and un-organised file.

Only use this feature as a final option – check with Miss Emmett first.

Canon CamerasThe process is very similar to using the Flip Cameras.

When creating a new project, select this option to have optimal quality.

Your Location will need to be the same as when using the HD cameras – your own folder on the NAS drive.

When using the Canon camera, you will need to connect the camera to a power supply otherwise it will not work.

Ensure the camera is switched on and connected to the PC via the standard USB port.

Once the camera is connected, copy your video clips from the camera to your correct folder on the NAS drive. This means you are not directly working off of the camera.

Once all of the clips have been copied, delete the original files to keep the camera memory free and uncluttered.

Before the files can be imported into the program (through double-clicking the Project Bin, or File>Import), you will need to make a change to the computer.

Open up your folder on the NAS server, where the clips are now stored.

Click Organise > Folder & Search Options > View > uncheck ‘Hide extensions for known file types’.

Note: this option may only need to be done once to each machine – check this first.

For every video clip, you will need to rename the file extension. You will find the clip is an “MOD” file – rename the extension to ‘.mpg’.

Once you have renamed these extensions, you should be able to drag and drop the files in to the program, just like using the Flip Cameras.
