4. Introduction

Captain Pen and the Pirate Penguins: Search for the Golden Minnow Interactive Grammar Game is Educational game that will take a 3rd and 4th Grade students through an interactive story while testing their knowledge of basic English Grammar.

Target Learners: 3rd and 4th Graders

Characteristics of Target Learners:

Students are at the 3rd grade level in grammar and reading. They have been given classroom presentations on basic grammar to include: common nouns, proper nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, and simple subjects. This multimedia project is to extend the student’s knowledge of 3rd grade level grammar and reading by participating in a visual story that requires interaction by solving clues based on grammar principles to advance to the next section.

Purpose and Objective: Students will demonstrate their ability to identify basic English grammar.

Instructional objectives:

1. The students will identify common nouns from a list of words.

2. The students will identify proper nouns in a sentence.

3. The students will properly use pronouns in a sentence.

4. The students will identify adjectives from a list of words.

5. The students will identify adverbs from a list of words.

6. The students will identify simple subject in a sentence.

Amount of Time to Learn the Content: 20 minutes

System Requirements: Microsoft Windows 7, 512M RAM, internet connection, Flash player 9.0, audio card, and speaker.

• Computer with internet access • 512mb RAM • Audio Card • Speakers • Mouse

Software Requirements

• Windows 7 or MAC • Flash Player 9 • Web Browser (FireFox, Internet Explorer 9, Safari)

Network Connections

• Requires 500 kbps internet connection minimum

The game will open in a new window.

7. Normal running of the courseware Time to Complete: Game takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete

User Interface Components: Main interface is a navigation bar at the bottom of the window. The navigation bar has basic buttons:

• Next Button – Appears when student is able to advance. Bell will ring when the Next button is enabled

• Map Open/Close button – Opens the Map once available for viewing and interacting by the student.

• Map Island Buttons – On the map there are images of islands. The student will click on the appropriate island image to continue through the game.

• Help Button – Opens the help page. Help page provides grammar descriptions to help the student with grammar rules

• Other interactivities – The student will have to solve clues by clicking on works on the right page of the book.

• Override codes - Press the following keys to override the game o N – Shows the next button o P – Shows the Previous button o Q – Will toggle through clues. Maybe used to refresh if a clue locks up

Ending the Program: The program can be exited at the end by closing the browser window

8. Troubleshooting • At times the clue interactive animations can freeze not allowing the student to select

words. If this occurs press “Q” until the interactive clue refreshes (usually requires pressing twice). The interactive clue will then be accessible to continue.

• If the student requires going back a page, press the “P” button to enable the previous button.

• If the Next button is not enabled, press the “N” to enable the Next button.

To start the game click on the NEXT button.

Pages 1 and 2, display the title and Learning Objectives. This Page has audio.

Learning Objectives:

1. The students will identify common nouns from a list of words.

2. The students will identify proper nouns in a sentence.

3. The students will properly use pronouns in a sentence.

4. The students will identify adjectives from a list of words.

5. The students will identify adverbs from a list of words.

6. The students will identify simple subject in a sentence.

Page 3 and 4, introduces the characters and sets the story line.

Pages 5 and 6, brings the treasure map into the story. Once Captain Pen opens the treasure map the Map Button will appear allowing the student to see the map. Click on the Map Button to open and close the map.

After Captain Pen receives the map the right page content will change to Clue 1. The student must identify the common nouns on the page. The page is broken into three groups (nouns that name a person, nouns that name a place, and nouns that name a thing). The correct answers are as follows:

Coach, Secretary, Actor, Neighbor, Library, Office, Airport, Dictionary, Ruler, Rug, Ice Cream.

These words spell out the clue: CARROT ISLAND. Once the correct words have been selected the NEXT button will appear.

Pages 7 and 8, thanks the student for solving the first clue. The student is then told to go to Carrot Island by clinking on it on the map. The student must open the map using the MAP Button and then click on Carrot Island

Page 9 and 10 show Captain Pen and the First Mate in the jungle on Carrot Island. They must find Melvin the Monkey and feed him something. To find out what they need to feed him the student must solve clue 2.

Clue 2, the student must identify the proper nouns in a sentence.

The correct answers are:

• Betty • America • Yellowstone National Park • Alaska • Nebraska • Anderson

The answers form the word BANANA

After the student solves the clue, Melvin the monkey will appear. Four items also appear. The student must select the BANANA to give to Melvin.

When Melvin has the BANANA he will tell the student where to go next. The next location is Dolphin Cove to see Zoe and Joey. The Student must open the map and click on Dolphin Cove for the next button to appear.

Page 11 and 12, have Captain Pen and his First Mate talking to Joey and Zoe in Dolphin Cove.

Joey tells Captain Pen he must answerthree questions he will give him the next clue.

Clue 3, the student must identify the proper pronoun for each of the sentences.

Once the student solves the clue, Joey tells them to go to Moon Island and find Terry the Turtle. The student must click on the MAP button to open the map and then select Moon Island

Page 13 and 14, shows Captain Pen and his first mate talking to Terry the Turtle. Terry the turtle tells Captain Pen a pirate had written some words on the back of his shell.

At the completion of the audio the right page content will change to show the words on Terry the Turtle’s shell.

To solve clue 4 the student must identify all of the adjectives on the back of Terry Turtles Shell. The correct adjectives are:

• Sleepy • Kind • Upset • Loose • Loud • Ill • Sharp • Little • Amused • Noisy • dark

Once the student has identified all of the adjectives the next location will be revealed.

The next location is Skull Island. The student must open the map using the MAP button and select Skull Island for the NEXT button to appear.

Page 15 and 16, Captain Pen and his First Mate arrive on Skull Island and meet Native Ned. Native Ned tells Captain Pen he will give him the next clue if the student can identify the adverbs on the sign.

At the end of the audio the right page content will change to show the sign post.

The correct answer is:

• Quickly • Tonight • Yesterday • later

Once the student selects the correct adverbs Native Ned will give the Captain the next clue, “look under the blue tree,” and the next button will appear.

Page 17 and 18, show Captain Pen and his First Mate looking for the Blue tree. The First Mate spots the blue tree.

The left page content will automatically change showing Captain Pen and the First Mate under the Blue tree with a treasure chest.

To open the treasure chest the student must identify the Simple Subjects in the listed sentences. The Simple Subjects identified will be used as the combination to unlock the treasure chest.

The correct answers are:

Once the student identifies the correct simple subjects they are able to unlock the chest using the left page key pad.

The student must enter the answers in by clicking on the matching words in the same sequence as found on the right page.

If the correct words have been clicked on in the correct order the words “Chest is Opening” will appear. The NEXT button will also appear allowing the student to continue.

Page 19 and 20, show Captain Pen and his First Mate with an open treasure chest. They found the Golden Minnow. This is the end of the Game.

Page 21 and 22, show the Credits and references used in creating this game.
