PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Greetings Cape Story Neighbors and Friends!

As you read this letter, you’re probably aware that we

have not had a Skipjack publication in quite awhile!

Well, thanks to one of our own neighbors, we won’t have

to worry about this for the coming year, at a minimum!

Christi Lyons, long-time Cape Story neighbor and expe-

rienced educator at Great Neck Middle, offered to take

on this activity after the Stovers retired from this enter-

prise last year. We are so appreciative that Ginnie and

Tracy produced this publication for the Cape Story resi-

dents and Civic Association members these past years,

and are pleased that Christi volunteered to take over this

responsibility. Thank you, Christi, for offering to help-

out the Cape Story Civic Association and continue this

tradition!

At this time, I also wish to thank all the residents and

other local (and not so local) contributors to our annual

Cape Story July 4th Fireworks presentation! Through

the financial support of individuals, businesses and oth-

er civic associations, the fireworks display has become a

much-anticipated event for more and more people over

the years. Todd Solomon, another long-time Cape Story

resident and President of the Shore Drive Community

Coalition, coordinates the event each year. For this

year’s show, Todd had to search long and hard for a via-

ble, approved fireworks presenter able to provide the

show from the shoreline. Feedback I received was that

this year’s presentation was one of the best ever! By the

way, Todd and his family also serve as the backbone for

the July 4th Parade and Brunch (those new to the area

are often amazed that we offer this food to all-comers).

Many thanks to Todd and all of the volunteers who

helped make this year’s celebration a success once again.

Which brings me to another related topic- volunteers

and contributors to the Civic Association in general.

Anyone who’s been in Cape Story for awhile must be

aware that you see the same faces and persons over and

over again, cleaning up, setting up, participating in, and

committing personal time to improve our area of Virgin-

ia Beach. I’m sure this isn’t isolated to CSBTS, but more

and more often, the same set of people works on these

activities- people with families and jobs, trying to keep

these activities going for our hundreds of residents.

The Cape Story by the Sea Civic Association would wel-come anyone interested in helping promote this eclec-tic, under-the-radar neighborhood that so many people say is the best neighborhood in the Hampton Roads. There are many opportunities in which neighbors can be involved to make Cape Story an even better place to live. Just think about the coming events: the Halloween ex-perience at Cape Story- or the annual Oyster Roast fund-raiser- in the neighborhood park and the Cape Santa in the Park celebration to help out those in need during the Holiday Season. These events, and other activities, can only continue through the efforts of people who take the time to participate. There are many other activities the Civic Association would like to initiate, but we need help. If you have suggestions for other sponsored events, or can spare the time to help out with existing or future neighborhood traditions, please contact any of the officers or send an e-mail to [email protected]. In ending this letter, I’d like to remind our residents to

please be cognizant of the children, pets, and the wildlife

throughout the neighborhood. Accidents can – and do-

happen, but this can be reduced so much if you make

visitors aware that they are entering a residential play-

zone. Not everyone uses common-sense when travers-

ing the streets and trail. So when you make that turn off

of Shore Drive, take your foot off the gas pedal, open the

windows and breathe in the bay air that makes our

neighborhood the PRIMARY place to be in Virginia

Beach!

To all the long-timers, let’s keep our traditions going.

To all newcomers, welcome to our neighborhood, and

please feel free to get involved!

Best always,

Diana Albis

SHORE DRIVE NEWS

Shore Drive / Oceanfront Trolley Loop Bayfront Shuttle Route 35 – Started on May 22, 2017, the VB Wave runs from 19th Street at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront to First Landing State Park and then to Vista Circle near Chic’s Res-taurant. From May 22 through Labor Day, VB Wave shuttles will run every 45 minutes from 8:00 a.m. to Midnight every day. Then from September 8 through October 1, VB Wave shuttle service will run from 8:00 a.m. to Midnight, but only on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This is a test route and may not be back next year if ridership numbers don’t meet City goals. So if you hate parking at the Oceanfront in the Summer, try this alternative. Tidal Gate Installation in Cape Story and Lynnhaven Colony The new tidal gate system went operational at the end of June. The gates will close when the tide is higher than water in the drainage ditches and open when the ditch height is 2 inches greater than the tides. So a typical northeaster high tide without a heavy rain will be prevented from back-flowing into and out of the drains in our neighborhood and flooding low lying homes. Shore Drive Proposed Developments

Marina Shore Apartments – The developer plans to build 200 apartments on the Ma-rina Shores Marina site after removing the boat dry storage and banquet facilities. No 2nd entrance or traffic light at Great Neck and Lynnhaven Dr. is planned.

Bay Lake Assisted Living Facility Expansion – The owners of Bay Lake plan to expand by add-ing new buildings to their vacant lot at the corner of First Court and Shore Drive. The plan requires a Conditional Use Permit and may be heard by the Planning Commission as early as August. The site layout shows an entrance off Shore Drive across from Indian Hill Rd and another off First Court.

Resort Conference Hotel Proposal to Convert to Assisted Living Facility – VB Planning re-ceived a Conditional Use Permit application for the transition of the VB Resort and Confer-ence Center to become Housing for Seniors and Disabled Persons. The request is to specifical-ly convert the hotel into independent, assisted and memory care units. A hearing may be as early as September.

Proposed Urban Winery on Shore Drive – Jennifer Eichert, owner and operator of Mermaid Win-ery in Norfolk, plans to open a winery at 4365 Shore Drive. The plans include an outside seat-ing area with fire pits and a tasting room that will be available for private parties.

Community Rating System Application Submittal The City of Virginia Beach has official requested FEMA to become part of the CRS program. If approved, residents paying flood insurance will see a savings of 10-25% on their insurance pre-miums. -For up to date information on these issues and many more, go to the Shore Drive Community Coalition website at www.sdcc.info

In case you didn’t know, all of Cape Story’s amazing events are organized and accomplished by volunteers. Without whom these events would have to stop and our neighborhood would become bland and boring. So please take a moment and thank all those that helped make this year’s 4th of July events another big success.

A big thank you to the employees of Hardee’s of Great Neck Square for making 250 biscuit and Farm Fresh on Great Neck Road for providing 20 dozen donuts. We’d also like to thank the association membership. $1,000 from Cape Story by the Sea Civic Associa-tion helped cover the total ex-

penses. In addition to food and money, we couldn’t have this annual tradition without dedica-tion from our volunteers. A spe-cial thanks to the following indi-viduals for stepping forward: Diana Albis, Empsy Munden, Cathie Sykes, Shirley Drye, John & Lorraine Anderson, Don Lawson, Todd, Jenifer, Kyra and Mason Solomon.

Also a big thanks to Innovative Pyrotechnic Concepts, L.L.C. for a safe and amazing show. As always, a great big thank you to everyone that donated money and time to help with the fireworks. Without your continued support this event could not happen.

4th of July Parade, Brunch and Fireworks Thank You’s

CSTBS 18th Annual Spring Fling

We were back bigger and better than ever after a year off due to 3 weekends of rain in 2016. Thanks to a great showing from the teens in the neighbor-hood. There were over 100 attendees at this year’s festivities. Over 120 hamburgers, 110 hot dogs, 10 pounds of potato salad , and lots of other donated goodies were enjoyed courtesy of your CSBTS Civic Association membership dues. Astro DJs kept the party moving with great tunes and fun games. Miss Dee Dee from Bobby the Clown’s Party Animals was kept very busy making bal-loon animals and painting some amazing mustaches on smiling faces.

Snow cones (over 90 pounds of ice) and popcorn where graciously provided by LYNN HUME, RE/MAX Allegiance.

The games were highly competitive as usual. Many kids and parents got a face or chest full of water competing in the water balloon toss. Some parents even participated in a tug-o-war versus the kids. Winners of the events were rewarded with gift certificates to Regal Cinema.

Spring Fling Volunteer Thank Yous!!

Thank you to all the volunteers that helped with Set up, Cooking, Serving, Contest Judges and Clean up. A big thank you to Cape Kids Group for their help and participation in the event. Many hands makes the load lighter, so thank you Don Lawson, Kim and Joe LaCroix, Mason and Jenifer Solomon, and John & Lorraine Anderson.

New 2018 Spring Fling Organizer Needed

It is with heavy heart that I make this decision. I have had many great memories and it has been my privilege to have been the organizer of this event for the past 18 years. I would just like to thank everyone one that has participated and volunteered in this very festive and fun event, without you this tradition would never have happened. So now we need new leadership to keep this event going. It’s not that hard, please contact me if you love kids and having fun. I will be happy to pass on my years of knowledge and planning. You can reach me at [email protected] or 757-667-8533 cell.

In addition to volunteer help, Cape Story by the Sea Civic Association also re-lies on monetary donations to make our events possible. The local business community and other civic associations along Shore Drive are always willing to respond to our requests. So please express our thanks by patronizing the fol-lowing establishments and saying thank you to your neighbors that helped de-fray costs for this year’s 4th of July events.

CELEBRATING CAPE STORY HISTORY

On August 5th, a new historical highway marker was dedicated to celebrate the history of the rail lines that ran

through our cape, at the Fort Story campus of the Joint Expeditionary Base. In 1880, as the new Cape Henry

Lighthouse was being constructed, a temporary tramway was built to transport materials. This was the first

railway to Cape Henry. It was followed by a passenger train 1902 that traveled over the Lynnhaven Inlet and

through what is now our CSBTS bike trail. This train offered hourly service from Norfolk to a brick depot at

Cape Henry. The 30 cent journey as “all the rage.” Local papers remarked, “The opening of Cape Henry has

made a delightful Fall outing for the people of Norfolk and

vicinity, and very many are enjoying it. In fact, everybody

who goes returns delighted with the novel experience.”

The map on the right depicts our neighborhood at the turn

of the century. Atlantic Avenue is now Shore Drive. Pacific

Avenue/the Norfolk Southern Railroad, is now our bike

path. Holly Road is now Poinciana. Willow Street is our

current Sandalwood and Pine Street was renamed Wake

Forest.
