Cead Mile Failte to You Allto the Sixth Annual Cape Cod Saint Patrick’s Parade

We would like to welcome you, on behalf of the Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade committee, to the 6th annual Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade. For the many attendees and participants who have been with us since the beginning, we hope you have enjoyed watching this event grow into one of the most widely attended events on Cape Cod.

There are many people to thank for our success. To all of the parade committee members who have volunteered their time this year, we extend a heartfelt thank you for attending the countless meetings and planning sessions that have been vital to our success. Your continued hard work and dedication have made this possible. To the Town of Yarmouth’s Tourism Revenue Preservation Fund, thank you for believing in us and supporting us. Your support played a major role in allowing us to expand this year’s parade, making it even more inviting for the thousands of tourists that we will draw to this year’s event. We welcome you to share in our success and look forward to your continued support, which will make it possible for us to welcome even more people to our area for future parades.

We would like to thank the countless local businesses, tradesmen, organizations and float builders whose loyalty and support have helped us fill the pages of this parade book which serves as a testament to your dedication and support of this parade.

To our corporate sponsors, The Irish Village, Captain Parkers, Lobster Roll Cruises, Luke’s Liquors, Yarmouth Police Relief Associa-tion, Cape Dairy, Emerald Physicians, Sons of Erin, Heart of Stone and The Sunflower School, thank you. We are extremely grateful and humbled by your generosity and commitment to us this year.

This is a very exciting year. Our Grand Marshal, “Irish” Micky Ward, will take a walk down the famed red carpet at this year’s Oscar Awards days before marching down Route 28 as our 6th Grand Marshal. Thank you, Micky, for honoring us with your presence and for sharing in this special day. We are also honoring Siobhan Magnus, Cape Cod’s own superstar, and finalist of the ever-popular American Idol. Siobhan will have the distinction of being our first ever Parade Queen. Thank you, Siobhan!

In addition to our Grand Marshal and Parade Queen, this year’s parade committee endeavored to find a way to honor a local Cape Cod person who has distinguished themselves in a manner that sets them apart from others. The committee unanimously chose to honor Mr. Vincent Mannion-Brodeur as the first ever recipient of the Thomas Francis Meagher Award. This award is named after General Meagher who served as the only commanding officer of the famous 69th Irish Brigade whose members, made up predomi-nantly of Irish immigrants, distinguished themselves as heroes during this country’s Civil War. Vincent, a 2006 graduate of Barnstable High-school, served as a Private First Class in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and was injured while serving a tour of duty in Iraq. While our award pales in comparison to the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and the various other awards earned by our Hometown Hero, it is our way of recognizing his sacrifices and service to the citizens of The United States of America.

This year the parade committee has also recognized several local citizens. Local musician Christy Henshaw will serve as this year’s Mayor. Christy’s smile and charm will serve up a helping of warmth along the route. Mr. Gus Healy has been awarded the Thomas P. McCann award. Gus has donated countless hours to various causes in our community and is well recognized for his generosity and willingness to help all of our residents. Chief Michael Whelan, Chief of Police in the Town of Dennis and a founding member of the Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade Committee, is awarded this year’s “Solid Man” award. Chief Whalen’s hard work and continued dedica-tion to the parade has played an enormous role in our success.

Lastly, this year’s Chairman’s award is awarded to Mr. Edward Tierney. As another founding member of the Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade Committee, Ed has continued to be one of the committee members who take it upon himself to accept and carry out a lion’s share of the work necessary to make this parade possible. Ed is surely one of the members of this committee who, if not for his presence and hard work, this parade would not be possible. On behalf of the committee, thank you and congratulations to all of our award winners.

In closing, please accept the thanks of every committee member. We are grateful to the thousands of people who come to share in this event. This celebration of Irish heritage, of spring and of life is yours. It belongs to our children’s children and is ours to nur-ture and grow so that our children’s children will take part in and enjoy it as much as we do.

The Shillelagh that starts our Cape Cod Saint Pat-rick’s Parade is steeped in tradition.

As a young woman, Mary O’Sullivan of Dingle Town, County Kerry, left Queenstown at the age of fifteen. The only family heirloom she had, was her grandfather’s Shillelagh. Her grandson, a Parade Committee member, asked her why she always carried that thorny stick around? Her reply was simple, but articulate. When she walked down the gangway at El-

lis Island, just before she stepped on American soil, she took the Shillelagh and tapped the ground three times, then started her new life. Her grandson asked her about the tapping and why three times. She stated, “I tapped once for the green, once for the white and once for the gold.” She continued “I had to leave Ireland behind, but I brought the spirit of Ireland with me.”

This same Shillelagh starts our Parade with three taps by our Grand Marshall; once for the green, once for the white and once for the gold.” Thank you Mary Sullivan. Your spirit has become part of the Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade tradition.

Vincent Mannion-Brodeur, 23 years old, of Hyannis MA, is a graduate of the Barnstable High School Class of 2006. While serving with B-2-505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, the 82nd Airborne Division was blown up in Tikrit, Iraq on 3-11-07 while searching for insurgents in a building. The building was booby trapped and Vin-cent’s team leader, Sgt. Dan Woodcock, was killed in action.

As a result of this mission, Vincent incurred multiple brain injuries and is still undergoing surgical procedures. He has been in and out of hospitals and therapy for over 3 1/2 years. His determination to survive and recover helped get Spaulding Rehabilitation a 3 million dollar grant from the Department of Defense for traumatic brain injuries and Post Tramatic Stress Syndrome. As a result of this grant, forty soldiers, including Marines, have re-ceived private care at Spaulding Rehabilitation in Boston.

Vincent was also the face of the Boston Red Sox and the Mass General Homebase Program. Vincent has been an inspiration to thousands of veterans. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge and a Meritorious Service Medal.

Vincent has been in 14 hospitals and continues to this day to have surgeries related to the wounds he received on that fateful day of 3-11-07 in Tikrit, Iraq. He is very proud of his Irish heritage and the fact that his mother, Maura Mannion-Brodeur was raised in Castlerea, Roscommon in Ireland.

The Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade Committee is humbled and proud to honor Vincent Mannion-Brodeur, a true patriot and Cape Cod hero.

About the ClubThe Sons of Erin Cape Cod (SOECC) is a Social, Members-Only Club comprised of men and women of Irish heritage with a common interest in promoting Irish culture, heritage and pride. Pride in the Club in-volves being a good civic neighbor through its efforts in establishing scholarships for local youths, sponsoring local sports teams and businesses. What began with an idea in November 2004, has blossomed into a fam-ily oriented Irish-American Club of over 1,200 members over 5 years later.

MembershipAs we approach our 6th Anniversary in September we have grown to over 1,200 members. We have been acknowledged as the fastest growing Irish-American Club in the United States. Our Officers have had breakfast with the President of Ireland and lunch with Ireland’s Consul General of Boston. A large group of Members also traveled together to Ireland. It’s been an exciting journey so far. If you would like to join our family, an application is available on our website at www.sonsoferincc.com or stop by the Club, ring the bell and let us know you’re interested in joining.

All the best for 2011!!

Home of our OwnThe SOECC is the only Irish-American Club on Cape Cod with its own home. We opened our doors in September 2005 in the old Cousin’s building in South Yarmouth and quickly outgrew our first home and bought a place of our own, the former Black Rock Grille in West Yarmouth, in May 2008. The bar area has been a favorite spot to not only watch the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics but International Soccer and Rugby. We serve reasonably priced, delicious meals in our cozy Dining Room. The Main Room is the home for our musicians and celebrations including live Irish entertainment every weekend, Irish

Dance Lessons, Sock Hops, Halloween Parties, Beach Parties and New Year’s Eve parties. Our Function Room has hosted wedding receptions, birthday parties, business meetings, family reunions, computer courses and a dart league. The Children’s Christmas party has been held in our Library along with Wine Tasting and Bagpipe lessons. Whether we’re celebrating the announcement of the Irish Man & Woman of the Year, gathering after one of our Golf Tourna-ments or holding our monthly Membership meeting, there is a warm, family atmosphere at the Club. There’s no place like home!!

Giving back to the CommunityDue to the generosity of our Members, the SOECC proudly supports the following:

“Irish” Mickey Wardas the 6th Parade Grand Marshal

“Irish” Micky Ward (born October 4, 1965) is a retired junior welterweight professional boxer from Lowell, Massachusetts. Micky is regarded as a working class hero, a blue-collar athlete who has overcome many difficulties in life and prevailed through de-termination and hard work. Ward won three New England Golden Gloves titles as an amateur before turning pro in 1985. He started off 14-0 in his professional career. Ward was known for his devas-tating left hook to the body and his ability to withstand punishment while waiting to land his trademark shot. A perennial underdog, he has been known to suddenly drop his opponent in the late rounds with a single shot to the body as he did against Emanuel Burton.

After a 15-year pro career, the veteran Ward gained widespread fame in his May 18, 2002 fight with Arturo Gatti, broadcast live on HBO. In 2001, Ward´s battle with Emanuel Burton on July 13 had been named the Ring Magazine Fight of the Year and it served to set up the much-anticipated Ward-Gatti matchup. Ward-Gatti I saw both fighters withstand an amazing amount of punishment through 10 rounds of non-stop action. Ward, who dropped Gatti in the ninth

round with a vicious left hook to the body, won the fight by majority decision.Ward-Gatti I was hailed as the “Fight of the Century” by boxing fans and writers, and Round 9 of that bout was called “The Round of the Century” by Emanuel Steward, who co-hosted the fight live on HBO. Ring Magazine named Ward-Gatti I the Fight of the Year for 2002.

In their rematch, Gatti neutralized Ward´s body punching power by boxing and staying low. In the third round, Gatti knocked Ward to the canvas with a thundering overhand right which landed on Ward´s ear. Ward sprawled into the turnbuckle and stayed down for the mandatory 8 count. Nobody, especially Gatti (who after the fight called it “the hardest punch I´ve ever landed”) expected Ward to get up, never mind finish the fight. Commentators noted that if it had been any other fighter than Ward, the referee would have stopped the fight in the third round. Ward and Gatti had a third fight, on June 7, 2003. Despite dropping Gatti in round six, Ward lost by a ten round unanimous decision. Ward-Gatti 3 was named Fight of the Year for 2003 by Ring Magazine, which meant that Ward had earned that honor three times. Before his final fight with Gatti, Ward had announced his plans to retire after the fight.

Micky captured both the WBU Intercontinental Light Welterweight title and the WBU Light Welter-weight title. He also won the respect and admiration of many fans worldwide. The song “The Warrior´s Code” by the punk rock band Dropkick Murphys is dedicated to Micky Ward, and his photograph appears on the cover of the album. Ward´s life is chronicled in a biography by Bob Halloran entitled Irish Thunder: The Hard Life and Times of Micky Ward. Micky Ward´s trilogy with Arturo Gatti would become the cover of the video game Fight Night Round 3, on the PlayStation 2 and XBOX versions of the game. And to top it all off The movie “The Fighter” staring Mark Wahlberg as Micky Ward and Christian Bale as his half-brother, Dickie Eklund recounts Ward´s climb to fame.

Siobhan Magnusas the Parade Queen

Siobhan Evelyn Magnus is an American singer-songwriter from Barnstable, Massachusetts who was the sixth place finalist on the ninth season of American Idol.

Siobhan was born on March 15, 1990, to parents Alan and Col-leen Magnus. She was raised in Barnstable, Massachusetts, along with her two older brothers Rory and Joe, her older sister Emily, and her younger sisters Ceili and Azora. Magnus’ father is a singer-songwriter, her siblings play in various bands, and her brother Rory is in the film animation industry. Her grandfather is retired Barn-stable judge Joseph J. Reardon.

Magnus first started singing in a fourth grade choral concert when she sang “Tomorrow” from the play Annie.

Magnus is a 2008 graduate of Barnstable High School in Hyan-nis, Massachusetts. In school, she was a member of the Barnstable High School Drama Club. When the drama club was filmed for an internet reality show by Warner Brothers, she was featured as one of three Dorothys for the play The Wizard of Oz. Back in May 2008, in a local profile about Magnus’s singing talent, the music depart-

ment chair of her school district was quoted as saying “Hands down, I think she’d win ‘American Idol’.” During her senior year in high school, she was voted the most individual girl. She auditioned as a vocal ma-jor Berklee College of Music, but was not accepted. She attended Salem State College, but dropped out after one semester because she felt out of place as a non-partier. Magnus worked as an apprentice glassblower in Hyannis before taking part in American Idol.

Magnus auditioned for American Idol in the summer of 2009 in Boston, and was one of two Massachusetts contestants to make the semi-finals of the show. Magnus emerged as an early contender after her interpreta-tion of “Think” originally by Aretha Franklin and “Paint It Black” originally by The Rolling Stones. She is known for being able to carry a note very long and very high, which she learned while singing in the shower. Magnus’ ability to hit those high notes and her dramatic performances drew comparisons to Adam Lambert. Some of her rock singing techniques have been met with criticism from Simon Cowell. On April 20, Magnus performed “When You Believe”, originally a duet by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, but the judges criticized her fashion sense and general lack of direction. On the top 6 night, when she performed “Any Man of Mine”, judge Kara DioGuardi told her that “she was back!” Despite praise from the judges for her per-formance, Magnus was eliminated the next day. Magnus was never reported to be in the Bottom 3 until the night of her elimination. Magnus’ elimination came as a surprise to herself and to some viewers as she was considered one of the front-runners on the show. It was reported that as a result, many fans of Magnus had vowed to not watch the rest of the American Idol season. The week after Magnus’ dismissal, American Idol had its lowest ratings since 2002. Magnus is currently the only contestant from Massachusetts to become a finalist in American Idol history.
