Pre Event For those of you who are arriving in Franschhoek on Saturday 29th February we would like to invite you to join us for a short ride to spin out the legs, check your bike building skills are still sharp and to taste some of the stunning local cuisine and fine wines that Franschhoek has to offer. Led by HotChillee Ride Captains, we’ll leave the Protea Hotel (Event HQ) at 15:00 for an hour’s social ride, followed by wine tasting at Leopard’s Leap. Food and drinks included, and if any of the wine takes your fancy, you’ll be able to order for delivery both locally and internationally! Non-riding partners are also welcome and transport will be arranged. Available to book via your registration form.

FranschhoekA small town in South Africa’s Western Cape with centuries-old vineyards and Cape Dutch architecture. The Huguenot Memorial Museum and neighbouring monument honour the area’s French settlers, who arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries.

If you Google ‘‘restaurants in Franschhoek’’ you will be overwhelmed by the choice and quality. For small groups you don’t typically have to book but for groups larger than 4 we recommend you do. Your accommodation hosts will be happy to help you do this or will be able to suggest their own favourites! A good starting point for a list of restaurants is the local tourist board website, click here.

As well as the cuisine Franschhoek has some of the world’s finest wine farms to visit and the local Wine Tram is not to be missed.

For any non riding partners attending there is plenty to do during the day. Lots of local boutiques to explore, horse riding and of course relaxing by the pool. More information can be found on the Franschhoek Tourism website, https://franschhoek.org.za.

HotChillee social rides for non riding partnersIf you are bringing a partner who is not taking part in the event itself but would like to join us for a more gentle and social ride, we have a small group lead by Nouschka and Moira leaving from the Event HQ at 08:30 on Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd March. The rides will explore the local roads around Franschhoek (with coffee stops!). There is no charge for these rides.

If you wish to hire a bike for these, we recommend Franschhoek Cycles www.franschhoekcycles.co.zatel: +27 (0) 21 876 4956or in Cape Town John O’Connor Cycles www.joccycles.co.zatel: +27 (0) 21 434 7741Ebikes are also available from DayTripppers in Cape Town, daytrippers.co.za/bicycle-rental/ tel: +27 (0) 21 511 4766

do we have mechanics?Yes we have a full mechanics service for each group. This service is headed up by HotChillee’s lead mechanic Graeme Freestone-King.

...and what happens if i puncture?

Let’s hope that you do not puncture! Please ensure that you are using new tyres and tubes as this greatly reduces the chance of puncture. Let the group know that you have punctured. Let your support van know that you have a puncture. If you have lost the group, the support van will drop you off with the group again. There may of course be a situation with loads of punctures for whatever reason. Thus be sure to carry one tube and CO2 canister at least, so that you can affect the repair yourself. We strongly recommend your bike is fully serviced before the event. Airlines sometimes refuse to carry CO2 canisters, but policies appear to differ between them. Be prepared to have them confiscated

– alternatively you may buy them locally. CO2 canisters– we recommend Franschhoek Cycleswww.franschhoekcycles.co.za+27 (0) 21 876 4956or in Cape Town John O’Connor Cycleswww.joccycles.co.zatel: +27 (0) 21 434 7741

more mechanical advice from graeme…1. Please ensure that you have a spare gear hangerfor your bicycle.2. Whilst we realise that some riders like to ride tubular tyres, if you puncture this will mean that we have to take a service wheel out of circulation until a new tubular can be bonded into place. Since many wheel manufacturers specify liquid adhesives are used, most importantly on carbon fibre rims, this can be up to 24h, especially in hot climates. Accordingly, it’s preferable to avoid the use of tubular tyres if at all possible.3. if you are riding a disk brake bicycle please let us know. You can add this information to your registration form here https://myevents.active.com.

how do i pay for tyres, spare etc?Your first 2 tubes are on us, however after this and for any other mechanic parts we use a “chit” system. All you need to do is sign for the items. We will ask you to settle your chit via credit card on the last day of the event.

where do i keep my sun cream, wallet, and other small items? The support van will have musettes available. These are small bags. You can keep items that you may wish to access during the day in this bag, and it will be kept in the support van. It might be useful to keep a dry top etc. in the musette.

what are the average speeds? There will be a minimum of three groups based on bothability and experience.Group 1: Rolling course average speed 29km/h+ for 120kmGroup 2: Average speed 27-28km/h for a rolling 120kmGroup 3: Average speed 25-26km/h for a rolling 120km(by rolling course we mean tarred roads with hills, not mountains)

event format —The Cape Rouleur is a multi stage endurance road cycling event consisting of flagged race sections with tempo riding between. Riders are seeded based on their times for the prologue, so that they end up riding in seeded groups of commensurate ability. The format allows for ample racing in the flagged sections for Groups 1 and 2 (the men’s competition takes place in Group 1 and the women’s in Group 2). Social tempo riding and interaction between the flagged sections in Group 3 is more focused on completing the endurance nature of the event. The flagged race sections cover sprinting, climbing and over all time (general classification).

flagged sections The key sections are:PrologueThe time trail prologue is to rank you and your fellow riders so that you can be placed in the appropriately seeded group. The Young Rider White Leaders jersey is awarded to the best under 23 years male and female riders for each stage, including the Prologue. The pro-logue has riders setting off at ten second intervals and drafting is not permitted. Riders will be allocated a start time with slower rider starting first and the pros last. This allows for a quicker more dynamic and exciting event.

peloton tips

—Michelle SharlandThe Head HotChillee Ride Captain for the event is Michelle who rides her 3rd Cape Rouleur and 5th HotChillee event this year.

—be predictableThe most important point in bunch riding is no sudden movements in any direction. These sudden movements, speed increase, braking hard, and slowing down at the back of the group quickly can be dangerous for all the group. Keep it smooth. It’s going to take a while for the group to settle down, so think about this when you set off for each stage and keep a safe distance from your fellow riders. You will more than likely be riding with people in your group who you haven’t ridden with before. So try and think about your own level in the group and others within the group. If you seem to be one of the more experienced riders in the bunch, try and give the less experienced riders a bit of space they may need. Maybe even try and chat with them and boost their confidence a little...

hold your lineRelated to the point above. No swerving across the road; holding a safe position from the edge of the road is important, even when you are cornering as a bunch. A sudden swerve for a pothole could take out a lot of riders behind you. When moving past a fellow rider, take care when in front of them and be sure to look for theirfront wheel, do not overlap and cut them up.Road.

Page 14: Cape rouleur...over the next 12 months, with the opportunity to ride HotChillee events in 2020/2021. The Young Rider Prologue briefing will be at the Event HQ at 14:00, followed by

no sudden braking Again related to the point above. Any dramatic change in speed, going faster at the front and then sudden braking at the back, becomes dangerous the further down the group someone is.

announce hazardsSometimes when riding in a group you will come across hazards in the road. Mainly potholes in the road, so keep in mind that the riders close behind you may not be able to see the hazard. This could also be an extreme case such as a dog or horse running out in front of the bunch, or a more regular hazard such as a bottle in the middle of the bunch that a rider has accidentally dropped. Call out “Dog”, “Horse”,“Bottle” etc and if you have dropped a bottle please don’t stop. Plenty of bottles available in the support vehicle or on your return to the hotel.

signalWhen riding in a group you will have to think a little bit more about your fellow riders, simple things like turning right and left, stopping, potholes, glass, train tracks, there are lots of things out there on the roads. Signalling to your fellow riders in your group is essential. The signal, whether it be “hole right”,“hole left”,“stopping” is passed down the line of riders going back through the bunch. The Ride Captains will run through some signals with you.

climbingClimbing is tough for all of us. So getting it right is important for your own energy saving and group safety. When you stand on the pedals to get out of the saddle, your bike will move back slightly (or a lot in some cases).

This can cause riders behind you to swerve away from your rear wheel and maybe crash. Make sure that when you stand out of the saddle you keep the pressure on the pedals and don’t relax too much, this will keep your speed constant.

descendingWhen on the front of the group keep pedalling. This will prevent the riders behind you having to “sit on their brakes” which can be annoying at times. For example, the front riders will keep pedalling and the riders behind will freewheel, saving energy in the process. Keep both hands on the bars, preferably on the drops. Descending on the drops will give you more confidence downhill and the corners will become a lot of fun. NEVER descend on the top of the handlebars.

close the gapsDon’t let gaps open up within the group between you and your fellow riders in front. It is far more efficient for you and the group to keep the spaces filled. Keeping the spaces filled, you will be using up to 30% less energy in the slipstream of other riders. Giving you that extra bit of energy for the harder parts.

talkingIntroduce yourself to your fellow riders before you start the stage and before they do. When you are talking on the bike always look forward – just as you should do when driving in your car. Concentrating out on the road is important, but talking passes the time too.

Page 15: Cape rouleur...over the next 12 months, with the opportunity to ride HotChillee events in 2020/2021. The Young Rider Prologue briefing will be at the Event HQ at 14:00, followed by

don't look backMost riders, when they look back, change their line and speed which can cause cause chaos in the group behind you and also you don’t want to see what’s about to happen. If you hear a crash in your group behind you, keep looking forward and slowly come to a stop. We don’t want any unnecessary crashes out there.

punctureWhen this happens, always raise your hand so that the other riders in the group can see what has happened and can avoid you. If it’s a front tyre its best to keep both your hands on the handle bars and let the person next to you signal for you, especially if you are descending. It can be dangerous to take a hand off the handlebars when you puncture in the front so use the back brake. Don’t stop until the bunch has completely passed you. Move to the side of the road. If it is the rear wheel, put your gears into the smallest sprocket, remove your wheel and raise it so that the service vehicle sees you. They will either change the wheel for you or fix the puncture in the vehicle and drop you off ahead of the bunch again. We don’t want you to have any punctures, but this is a real Pro Experience and is just how its done in the Pro peloton.

stoppingIf there is an unscheduled stop, train level crossing for example. Stay in your position in the group and don’t use it as an opportunity to overtake riders that have slowed or stopped in front of you. This can become dangerous if the group is all over the road.

lead carNever pass the lead car unless instructed to do so by the police or marshals. Also do not draft the vehicle – the front 6 riders may enjoy it but the rest of the bunch will not!

ride captainsThey are here to help you all get through this multi stage event and for the smooth running of the event, please take time to listen to all their advice on and off the bike.

comfort breaksIn the pro peloton many riders can manage to take a comfort break whilst on the go. Trying a comfort break whilst on the go isn’t easy, so please don’t try this. The Ride Captains will stop the bunch in the morning and afternoon for a comfort break.

Michelle and all the HotChillee Ride Captains and crew look forward to seeing you soon!
