THE MUMBAI METROPOLITAN REGION ENVIRONMENT
IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY (MMREIS) was established in
1996 by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development
Authority (MMRDA) to promote improvement of the
environment in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR)
through studies, surveys, demonstrations, investigations,
research and related activities.
SOMAIYA VIDYAVIHAR encompasses 34 institutions,
with more than 39,000 students & 1,500 faculty. It was
founded By Padmabhushan Shri Karamshi Jethabhai
Somaiya in 1959, to provide quality holistic education.
Somaiya Vidyavihar has always been a place with a
purpose making a positive difference in quality of life of
its students and the community. It is known as much for
its science, technology, engineering, management, social
sciences and commerce programmes, as for its
programmes for academic studies in various faiths and
cultures of India.

The subsidized course fee per module is payable by NEFT
or DD drawn on any nationalised bank in favour of
‘K. J. Somaiya College of Science and Commerce’. In the
event of a participant missing a module in the first year,
he/she is allowed to attend it the following year.
Registration fee includes study material, field visits,
breakfast, lunch and evening tea.
Accommodation will be made available in hostel (AC/
Non-AC) on request for limited seats. For hostel charges
and availability contact the co-coordinator in advance.
Last date for registration and fees payment is 8 days
prior to date of Module commencement
About the Programme
Launched in 2016 by K. J. Somaiya College of
Science & Commerce in collaboration with Mumbai
Metropolitan Region Environment Improvement
Society, the Capacity Development Programme in
Environment Management (CDEM) aims to deepen
understanding, enhance
knowledge and provide
practical skills and action
plans required to meet the
challenges of Sustainable
Development of rapidly
growing cities.
The course consists of five
modules of five day
duration. Each module is
designed to understand
the science, economics &
policies for urban environment management
through discussions, field visits, group activities &
case studies for application of best practices with
experts across the country.
These modules are thoughtfully designed to get
hands on experience from world class experts
enabling a strong network of sustainability thought
leaders coming from diverse fields.

Participants enrolling for individual modules may have a
graduate degree in any discipline or minimum 5 years work
experience in the relevant field. All diploma applicants will
be screened on the basis of educational qualification and
work experience prior to granting admission to the course.
CERTIFICATION
Participants will be given participation certificates for
attending individual modules. A diploma will be jointly
awarded by K J Somaiya College of Science and
Commerce and MMREIS to participants who
successfully complete all five modules.
The module is aimed at imparting knowledge about the overall Environmental Law and Policy regime in India. This module will deliberate on evolution of environmental
legislation in India, existing legal framework, role of various institutions in the environmental governance and environmental jurisprudence. This module offers a good opportunity to interact with environmental law professionals and academicians.

ENVIRONMENTAL
POLICY & REGULATIONS
Gain deeper understanding about classification of solid
waste, process of ISWM,
legal framework, waste
generation aspects and
composition, segregation,
collection and transport,
technological options for
waste management/treatment/disposal, reduction,
recovery and the strategy and framework for ISWM. The
module will also cover the best practices across the globe
for treatment of waste as a resource and preparation of
ISWM action plan. Apart from municipal solid waste (MSW),
management of other important waste streams such as
E-Waste, Construction & Demolition (C&D) Waste, and
Biomedical Waste will be discussed.
Module 2
INTEGRATED SOLID
WASTE MANAGEMENT
(ISWM)
Learn about fundamentals of water resource management from a sustainability perspective. Delve into the key causes of water quality loss and ecosystem
degradation, both globally and locally. Gain understanding of important conservation actions including water quality and waste water treatment in urban areas, use of recycled and grey water, rain water harvest and innovative approaches to water treatment technologies including CETP/STP.
Module 3
WATER RESOURCE
MANAGEMENT Examine sustainability
principles as they apply to the
built environment from the
economic, environmental and
social-equity perspectives.
The five elements of green building namely site selection,
water conservation and waste management, indoor air
quality and building materials will be discussed through
case studies and hands-on analysis. Explore planning,
design and building problems holistically, and learn about
life-cycle analyses. Analyze numerous case studies, specific
projects, emerging technologies & planning approaches
from around the world.
Module 4
GREEN BUILT
ENVIRONMENT The study of Sustainable Cities is pertinent given the tremendous pressures on the environment in the MMR context due to
increasing urbanisation. Correlation between changing land-use patterns, pressure on infrastructure and its impact on availability of water, green spaces and the role in local climate change and weather patterns form the core of the Sustainable Cities module.
