TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS

1. BALLISTEC CARBONOur High-Strength, High-Impact carbon construction. Ultra high-strength fibres developed for military ballistic armoring, and impact-resistant hot-melt resins are used as the primary structural materials of the frame while the stiffer but more brittle high-modulus carbon fibres are used strategically solely to enhance stiffness and tune ride-feel. Lighter and stiffer than aluminium, pound for pound stronger than steel, BallisTec ends the traditional connection between ultra-light carbon frames and fragility. Over. Period. End of story.

2. CONTINUOUS CARBONThe EVO’s construction features a continuous network of high modulus stiffening FIBREs which run around the joint areas and along the outside edges of the frame tubes. This network connects all the parts of the frame and allows us to precisely tune the ride quality and handling.

3. QUADRUPLE MONOCOQUE DESIGNThe EVO is made up of four individual monocoque pieces. The head tube/down tube/top tube, the BB/seat tube, and each chain stay/dropout/seat stay assembly are separately molded, then joined with a precise pattern of carbon overwrapping.

4. ONE-PIECE STAY/DROPOUT ASSEMBLIESOne of the key weight saving features on the EVO is the innovative rear stay/dropout assemblies. The chain stay, seat stay and dropout are molded as a single piece on each side. This requires a separate mold for each side, for each size bike but allows us to run carbon continuously from each stay through the dropout, distributing force more evenly and saving over 40 grams compared to traditional construction methods.

5. SPEED SAVE MICRO-SUSPENSION SYSTEM

Smoother is faster. While most companies view vertical compliance simply as a means to enhance rider comfort, we’ve designed a vertical compliance system that actually makes the bike faster.

The SuperSix EVO has two zones of vertical compliance which work together to improve comfort and speed. The first zone, made up of the SPEED SAVE Stays and Offset Dropout Fork Blades, focuses primarily on chassis dynamics. Much like the suspension on an F1 car, these features are engineered to help the bike roll faster, not necessarily to add comfort. Subtle vertical compliance in these areas, mated with superb lateral and torsional rigidity, delivers improved rolling speed, better acceleration, dramatically improved cornering speed and control without negatively affecting power transfer.

The second zone concentrates on rider comfort. The seat tube features a directionally optimised carbon layup which allows it to deflect slightly fore and aft, which diffuses vibration, impacts and reduces the energy-sapping muscle micro-trauma caused by long days in the saddle.

5A. SPEED SAVE REAR STAYSSophisticated carbon lay-up and refined tube shaping create an ultra light chain stay/seat stay assembly that allows controlled vertical movement of the rear wheel while retaining exceptional lateral and torsional stiffness. The SPEED SAVE Stays are tuned to work with the SPEED SAVE Offset Dropout Fork.

5B. SPEED SAVE OFFSET DROPOUT CARBON FORKThe 1-1/8” to 1-1/4” tapered carbon steerer is lighter than 1.5” tapered forks and stiffer than the 1-1/8” forks. The 315 gram SPEED SAVE fork also features offset dropouts, allowing more fork angle for vertical compliance while maintaining the same great handling geometry as the SuperSix. Tuned to work with the SPEED SAVE rear stays.

5C. DELTA SEAT TUBEThe Delta Seat Tube on the EVO features a carbon lay- that allows it to deflect slightly fore-aft under a rider’s weight to absorb impacts and vibration. It is laterally ovalised at the BB to maximize rigidity.

6. PRESSFIT BB30With the PressFit BB30 system we can mold the entire bottom bracket shell and seat tube in carbon, utilizing continuous fibres that run the length of the structure. Even with the added weight of the cups, this saves over 25 grams and adds stiffness.

7. ERGONOMIC TOP TUBEThe shape of the top tube design maximizes the width and contact area with the head tube for rigidity, then narrows through the middle for knee clearance, then widens again for lateral stiffness where it meets the seat stays. This offers maximum stiffness while still allowing an aero knees-in riding position.

8. REDUCED FRONTAL AREACompared to the oversized competition, the EVO has around a 20% smaller diameter down tube, 11% smaller diameter head tube and 15% thinner fork blades. All this adds up to a significant reduction in frontal area and less aerodynamic drag without the added weight and lost rigidity of aero tube shapes.

4. ASYMMETRIC CHAIN STAYSThe driveside chain stay is oversized and shaped to resist the axial loads of the drivetrain, while the non-driveside chain stay has optimised material placement for weight saving and power transfer.

5. HOURGLASS SEAT STAYSHourglass stays allow the vertical compliance necessary to maintain confident control over less-than-perfect surfaces, and the comfort required to be able to deliver maximum performance after long days in the saddle.

DEEP RADIUS HEAD TUBEDeep radius head tube increases the cross section of the crucial top tube/down tube/ head tube junction for incredible torsional rigidity, and positions the lower headset bearing in line with the down tube for added strength. Molded carbon headset cups replace aluminium for weight savings.

ELITE ROAD


A WORD ABOUT CARBON FIBRE: Cannondale uses unidirectional carbon fibre exclusively for our carbon construction. This allows our engineers to fine tune the directional strength of carbon – its anisotropic properties – to maximize performance depending upon the loads and characteristics in each tube.

While other bike manufacturers use woven fibres, we prefer not to use it for two reasons:

1. Any kind of woven fibres – take the shirt you’re wearing, for example – has a bit of give or stretch to it. The last thing that sprinters want when they’re headed for the line is a frame that has

a bit of give as the fibres expand and then contract. This kind of performance robs valuable energy that could otherwise be used to drive the bike forward. No one wants a bike that’s designed like their shirt.

2. Woven carbon fibre puts the fibres at 90 degrees to one another, which can negate any ability to fine tune carbon’s performance. When paired with sophisticated engineering and lay-up, unidirectional fibres allow us to precisely control a tube’s directional stiffness.This keeps you tracking true through the turns and maximizes every watt of power in the sprints and climbs.

10. BB30 SYSTEMFound on all SuperSixes, BB30 is the epitome of System integration. Cannondale invented the BB30 standard 10 years ago to take crank and frame performance to the next level. Now an industry standard, BB30 is still the best combination of light weight, stiffness, and ankle/heel clearance.

TWELVE MONTHS AGO WE ROCKED THE INDUSTRY WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE CAAD10, A BIKE THAT HAS YET AGAIN RESET THE LIMITS OF WHAT’S POSSIBLE WITH ALUMINIUM AND GARNERED UNIVERSAL RAVE REVIEWS IN THE PROCESS.

Tipping the scales at a mere 1150 grams* it’s not only the lightest aluminium road frame ever created, it’s lighter than most of our competitors’ elite carbon frames.

The CAAD10 is light years ahead of any other aluminium bike on the market. It doesn’t look like any other aluminium bike and it sure as hell doesn’t ride like any other aluminium bike out there. Repeatedly compared to carbon models in ride feel and performance, it’s an all-out racer that not only corners like a race car in the crits, but also puts the average carbon fibre frame to shame in stage races or your local training ride.

1. RACE GEOMETRY. RACE PERFORMANCE The CAAD10 is a racer through and through, unlike many of our competitors’ aluminium bikes with geometries that dumb down the delight of riding a high performance aluminium race machine. Engineered for performance, the CAAD10 rides better than most carbon offerings.

2. SMARTFORMED 6069 ALLOY CONSTRUCTIONThe most sophisticated aluminium construction on the planet allows ultra precise wall-thickness and tube shape manipulation, ensuring that material is placed exactly where it is needed for stiffness and strength with zero excess.

3. OPTIMISED TUBE SHAPESOversized, round down tube flares to meet the head tube for maximum stiffness. The massive, horizontally ovalised top tube measures a huge 47.5x42mm where it meets the head tube, narrows through the middle for knee clearance, then widens again to meet the seat stays.

4. SPEED SAVE STAYSThe SPEED SAVE chain stays and seat stays are shaped and butted to allow them to flex vertically but stay extremely stiff laterally and vertically. Functioning like the suspension on F1 cars, SPEED SAVE offers improved rolling speed, better acceleration, and dramatically improved cornering speed and control without negatively affecting power transfer.

5. SPEED SAVE CARBON FORKThe 1-1/8” to 1-1/4” tapered carbon steerer is lighter than 1.5” tapered forks and stiffer than the 1-1/8” forks. The 360 gram SPEED SAVE fork also features offset dropouts, allowing more fork angle for vertical compliance without affecting the handling. Tuned to work with the SPEED SAVE rear stays.

6. ASYMMETRIC CHAIN STAYSThe driveside chain stay is oversized to better resist the loads from the drivetrain, while the non-drive stay is optimised for weight savings.

7. DELTA SEAT TUBE The 27.2 compatible seat tube is laterally ovalised at the BB for great BB stiffness.

4. ASYMMETRIC CHAIN STAYS Just like on our premium race bikes, we oversize and reshape the driveside chain stay to better handle the loads from the drivetrain, while keeping the non-drive stay svelte for weight savings.

5. EXTERNALLY MACHINED HEAD TUBE A technique Cannondale has used for years, excess material is precisely machined out of the low stress areas of the head tube, saving significant weight with no loss of strength.

6. TAPER-BUTTED TUBES Like the legendary CAAD frames of the past, the CAAD8 features 6061 aluminium which has been taper-butted and heat-treated to a T6 hardness. The smooth transitions provided by taper-butting eliminate the internal stress risers of traditionally butted frames, again allowing a lighter, stronger frame.

Totally redesigned for 2012, the new CAAD8 draws on our decades of aluminium engineering expertise to bring a remarkable level of performance to the entry-level road category. By far the lightest frame in its class, the Cannondale CAAD8 shares many of the features and tube shapes of our incredible CAAD10 and mates them with a slightly more forgiving HeadsUp race geometry. 1. SAVE PLUS REAR STAY MICRO-SUSPENSION SYSTEM An all new carbon lay-up and exaggerated vibration-absorbing tube shapes give the SAVE PLUS chain stay/seat stay system 13% more vertical deflection than the previous version, while actually improving the frames lateral and torsional stiffness.

SAVE PLUS MULTIFLEX INTERCHANGEBLE SEATPOST SYSTEMFine tune your ride-feel to match your weight, terrain or preference by choosing either the firm-flex or soft-flex version of the SAVE PLUS seatpost shaft. The quick-change removable seatpost head allows you to switch back and forth between posts without having to remove and readjust the saddle each time. Compatible with 2009-2010 Synapse frames for owners who wish to upgrade.

3. SAVE PLUS FULL CARBON FORK The Synapse SAVE PLUS full carbon fork is completely redesigned for 2012. Offset dropouts allow the fork blades to have the vertical compliance of a shallow rake fork, without sacrificing the Synapse’s nimble, precise handling. Refined carbon lay-up and SAVE shaping further enhance the fork’s vertical compliance.

4. PERFORMANCE GEOMETRY The proven geometry and positioning of our Synapse stays the same. Compared with our Elite race geometry, the Synapse geometry features a taller head tube (2-2.5cm taller), gently sloping top tube, slightly relaxed head angle and longer wheelbase. This combination provides a more upright riding position and a lively, yet stable feel. It’s confidence-inspiring and relaxing but avoids the sluggish feel and awkward handling of many “comfort” road bikes.

5. CO-CURED MONOCOQUE FRONT TRIANGLE Monocoque front triangle with optimised carbon layup, rear stays and size-specific alloy-faced full carbon dropouts are joined by co-curing/carbon overwrapping. A more complex and expensive process, co-curing creates lighter, stiffer and stronger structures than the lugged or internal lugged junctions found on many other carbon frames.

1. OPTIMISED 6061 ALLOY CONSTRUCTIONAn all new carbon lay-up and exaggerated vibration-absorbing tube shapes give the SAVE PLUS chain stay/seat stay system 13% more vertical deflection than the previous version, while actually improving the frame’s lateral and torsional stiffness.

Cannondale’s legendary double-pass smooth welds join optimally shaped taper-butted tubes for a great combination of svelte light weight, stiffness and durability.

2. SAVE PLUS REAR STAY MICRO-SUSPENSION SYSTEMBy flattening and butting the chain stays and triaxially forming the seat stays, we create a rear stay assembly that allows significant deflection vertically to absorb road shock and vibration, while staying extremely rigid laterally for power transfer and confident cornering.

3. PERFORMANCE GEOMETRYCompared with our Elite race geometry, the Synapse geometry features a taller head tube (2-2.5cm taller), gently sloping top tube, slightly relaxed head angle and longer wheelbase. This combination provides a more upright riding position and a lively, yet stable feel.

1. BALLISTEC CARBON Our High-Strength, High-Impact carbon construction, BallisTec ends the traditional connection between ultra-light carbon frames and fragility. Over. Period. End of story.

Ultra high-strength fibres developed for military ballistic armoring, and impact-resistant hot-melt resins are used as the primary structural materials of the frame while the stiffer but more brittle high-modulus carbon fibres are used strategically in protected locations to enhance stiffness. Lighter and stiffer than aluminium, pound for pound stronger than steel, BallisTec carbon is perfect for the kind of abuse the ‘cross season dishes out.

2. SPEED SAVE VIBRATION ELIMINATION TECHNOLOGYThe chain stays and seat stays on the SuperX feature our trademark SPEED SAVE technology. Each tube is individually laid up, orienting the unidirectional fibres precisely to resist the tube-specific loads, then the tubes are joined and overwrapped following an equally precise layup schedule. Time consuming, demanding and expensive, this process yields the lightest, stiffest and strongest results.

SHAPE-OPTIMISED TUBINGStripped down to its bare essentials, each tube represents the maxim of “form follows function”: oversized 53mm round down tube for maximum torsional rigidity and ovalised Delta seat tube for maximum BB area stiffness. The straight tubing on the SuperX shaves the most weight possible by enabling the carbon fibres to pull absolutely straight, which increases the performance of the fibre.

Hourglass seat stays, asymmetric chain stays, taper-butted and optimised tubes and our classic double-pass smooth welds all speak to the CAADX’s race-bred heritage, while rack and fender mounts and a slightly more upright position expand its usability.


1. RELAXED RACE GEOMETRYThe CAADX has a slightly taller head tube and slightly slacker head tube angle than the SuperX, providing a more upright position and stable handling.

2. SMOOTH WELDSA true smooth weld, rather than the sand, putty, and paint “smooth welds” of our competition. Cannondale’s trademark double-pass smooth weld technology eliminates the stress-risers and weak points found on traditionally-welded frames, enabling us to build lighter, stronger frames.

3. HOURGLASS SEAT STAYSThe hourglass shape of the seat stays offers significant vertical compliance for comfort and control over rough surfaces, while remaining laterally rigid for solid power transfer and confident handling.

6. TAPER-BUTTED TUBESLike the legendary CAAD frames of the past, the CAADX features 6061 aluminium which has been taper-butted and heat-treated to a T6 hardness. The smooth transitions provided by taper-butting eliminate the internal stress risers of traditionally-butted frames, again allowing a lighter, stronger frame.

REAR SHOCK TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS

1. DYAD RT2 SHOCK The DYAD is the first shock that provides two completely different shock options in one package –Elevate and Flow. Each mode has its own air spring volume, each with its own completely separate damping circuits. It is fundamentally like having two different shocks available to you at the flick of a switch.

In the 180mm Flow setting, the shock’s L.A.S. (linear airspring technology) provides a spring rate that is virtually identical to a coil spring and mates it with speed sensitive damping circuits tuned for maximum descending performance. In the 110mm Elevate setting, the air spring volume is reduced, providing a firm, progressive spring rate, mated to damping circuits optimised for trail riding and climbing performance.

2. ATTITUDE ADJUSTIt’s pretty obvious that attacking steep climbs requires a different attitude than charging aggressive descents, but “Attitude” is also an

aircraft term that refers to the angle of a craft relative to the horizon. The Claymore offers riders two ways to adjust their “attitude”. First, the two-position shock mount allows the base geometry to be adjusted to suit the terrain and riding style. Then switching between the DYAD shock’s two settings radically alters the Claymore’s geometry: low and stable for flowing descents, steep and forward for efficient climbing.

3. TWO POSITION SHOCK MOUNTThe Claymore’s versatility starts with two shock mounting options. Changing between the two positions changes your BB height by 1.2cm and your head angle by a full degree. Choose the geometry that best suits your terrain and riding style, and let the DYAD’s dual nature do the rest.

4. ECS-TC (ENHANCED CENTER STIFFNESS-TORSION CONTROL) SYSTEMThe ECS-TC System is the key to the the Claymore’s rock solid feel and ultra precise handling. The shock linkage and swingarm pivot use 15mm thru-axles which are clamped on both sides, effectively tying the two sides together and dramatically increasing the system stiffness. Wide bearing placement, double bearings at rear dropouts and a unique linkage-bearing preload system eliminates freeplay in the rear suspension, improving center-stiffness and enhancing control.

5. PULL SHOCK DESIGNThe pull shock design of the Claymore places the shock’s mass just above the BB keeping the bike’s center of gravity low and centered and making the bike both extremely stable and supremely flickable. It also equalizes forces and concentrates stresses in the super strong BB node.

6. CANNONDALE SMARTFORMED ALUMINIUMCannondale’s trademark double-pass smooth welds, and SmartFormed, septuple- butted, heat-treated 6069 series aluminium. The down tube alone has seven different wall thicknesses, created by butting the tube along its length, then mechanically shaping the tube, then hydro-forming it into the final shape. Incredibly labor intensive and difficult, it shows Cannondale’s continued mastery of the aluminium arts.

7. BOX SECTION CONSTRUCTIONTo maximize strength and stiffness while reducing weight in crucial high-load areas, the BB node, shock link and seat stay bridge are hollow, box-section construction. The two halves of each piece are forged, precision-machined, welded together and heat- treated, forming extremely stiff, strong and light structures. Difficult, costly, and time consuming, it is details like these that make the Claymore truly exceptional.

8. X-12 THRU AXLEAnother example of our System integration philosophy, the X-12 thru axle and dropout system provides the stiffness of a 12mm thru axle with the quick wheel changes and ease of use of a quick-release wheel. Compatible with both 142mm and 135mm thru-axle wheels.

9. UNINTERRUPTED SEAT TUBEForget interrupted seat tube designs; a full seat tube provides the maximum possible structural strength and allows for full seatpost height adjustment.

Lighter and stiffer than aluminium, stronger and more durable than steel, BallisTec carbon can shake off rock strikes and impacts that would cripple the competition and their carbon “shields”.

5. EXPANDABLE CORE TECHNOLOGY (ECT)Carbon fibre construction gets its strength and stiffness from the precise orientation of the fibres in a structure. Instead of the flexible bladder used in traditional “balloon-in- a-mold” methods, our ECT method of carbon construction uses a special process to hold the fibre strips perfectly in place during molding. This process eliminates carbon “drift” during molding, yielding greater strength, less weight and greater reliability.

6. CO-MOULDED ALUMINIUM BB NODETo maximize strength in the crucial, high-load BB/shock mount area we co-mold a high-strength, high-precision, heat-treated CNC’d aluminium BB node into the frame. We pioneered co-molding technology with our Six13 and Scalpel carbon/aluminium frames and have evolved it over the years to bring it to this point. High-strength, non- conductive structural fibres at critical joint areas eliminate any chance of galvanic corrosion and structural degradation. The bond formed between the carbon and the aluminium is actually stronger than the bond of carbon to itself.

1. STAGED TRAVEL Specifically customized shocks are paired with a precisely engineered swing link to deliver 120mm of staged travel – plush in the early part of the stroke, more linear through the middle for efficient pedaling and smooth action, and firm at the end to prevent bottoming.

2. SIZE-SPECIFIC LINKAGESuspension is a tricky thing. Subtle changes can have a big impact on the system’s performance. So rather than simply repositioning our shock mounts lower to gain the standover needed on smaller frames, we created an entirely different linkage so that the smaller frames maintain the leverage ratios and shock performance of the larger frames.

1. ZERO PIVOTThe heart of the Scalpel design is the Zero Pivot rear stay system. No bearings, no bushings, nothing to add weight or cause play, just chain stays and seat stays engineered to flex along a given path, providing 80mm of plush, progressive travel. Through sophisticated carbon layup, the stays are designed to flex vertically, while remaining extremely stiff laterally and torsionally.

2. BALLISTEC CARBONCannondale’s, high-strength, high-impact carbon. Ultra high-strength fibres developed for military ballistic armoring and impact-resistant hot-melt resins are used as the primary structural materials of the frame, while high-modulus carbon fibres are used strategically to enhance stiffness. Lighter and stiffer than aluminium, pound for pound sronger than steel, BallisTec carbon can shake off rock strikes and impacts that would destroy Scalpel’s lightweight competition.

3. TUBE2TUBE CONSTRUCTIONEach tube is individually laid up, orienting the unidirectional fibres precisely to resist the tube-specific loads, then the tubes are joined and overwrapped following an equally precise layup schedule. Time consuming, demanding and expensive, this process yields the lightest, stiffest and strongest results.

4. ONE-PIECE STAY ASSEMBLIESTo maximize strength and consistency at the crucial BB/chainstay junction, both chainstays and the entire BB shell are molded as one piece. The seatstay/upper bridge assembly is also molded as a single piece. Lighter, stiffer and stronger.

5. SPEED SAVE VIBRATION ELIMINATION TECHNOLOGYThe chain stays, seat stays and seatpost on the Flash all feature our trademark SPEED SAVE technology. Flattened cross-sections and sophisticated carbon layup allows the SPEED SAVE features to act like a micro-suspension system, deflecting vertically to absorb trail shock and vibration, while staying extremely rigid laterally for power transfer and confident cornering.

6. OPTIMISED HARDPOINTSFlash uses postmount disc brake mounts to save the weight of the adapter and reduce the system weight of the complete bike. Our alloy dropouts and disc mounts are lighter and stiffer than most carbon dropouts, but still have the capability of dissipating heat from the disc brake mounts during race-like conditions. Weight saving direct-mount front derailleur point is compatible for Shimano and SRAM.

29’ER BASICSMOUNTAIN


ROTATIONAL MOMENTUM: Die-hard 29’er aficionados are right when they say that the design inherently conserves rider energy. 29’er wheels have slightly more mass than 26-inch wheels, due to longer spokes, larger tyres and bigger rim circumference, and once those wheels are in motion, momentum from rotational mass can carry riders through tough sections that would stop a 26-inch wheeled bike. Net effect? Riders conserve energy and ride faster. While it does take slightly more energy to spool up larger wheels, once they are at speed it takes a lot more to slow ‘em down, too. The bottom line is that many riders use smaller energy inputs to keep that 29’er rolling like a freight train. At the end of the trail, at the end of the ride, you’ll feel the difference.

ANGLE OF ATTACK: Simply put, riders on 29’ers can clear sections of trail that have given them fits in the past on little-wheel bikes. Why? The tyre’s approach angle is lessened on a 29’er for better rollover and float. The larger wheel approaches obstacles on the trail – rocks, roots, ruts, whatever – with a shallower angle. That shallow angle lets the wheel roll right over obstacles that would slow down a smaller wheel. The result is less jarring, less fatigue and less likely hood of going over the bars. Instead, riders get that characteristic ‘float’ that 29’er converts rave about.

BETTER TRACTION:A bigger contact patch with the trail means better control, better traction, and better braking. It provides sure-footed confidence in any situation. Climb like a diesel, turn like an F1, and handle everything else on the trail like a rally car.

BB PLACEMENT: When it comes to BB placement, Cannondale 29’ers are really pretty ideal. Because of the bigger wheels, the BB sits slightly higher than on a 26-inch bike, giving better stump-clearing performance. But a 29’er BB has significantly more “drop” than a 26’er, meaning that the BB sits much lower relative to the axles, providing super stable but agile handling that allows riders to maintain maximum speed with complete control and complete confidence.

A higher BB allows riders to clear tough obstacles better, such as a tree down across the trail. A lower BB gives confidence-inspiring stability. On Cannondale’s 29ers, you get the best of both.

Ever since we built our first 29’er hardtail, Cannondale fans around the world have been clamoring for us to build a full suspension version. Easy, right? The simple path would have been to just take one of our existing designs and stretch it to accept those big 29’er hoops but, we’re Cannondale. It’s not about the easy path. It’s about the right path. If we are going to build a 29’er dual-susser, we are going to do it right. To create this sweet new ride, we started with the proverbial clean sheet of paper. We then took elements from our Flash 29’er, Scalpel, RZ, and OverMountain bikes. We tweaked, massaged and mixed them into an entirely new, ground-up 29’er-specific chassis designed to address the three biggest issues that plague most 29’ers:

Weight.

Stiffness.

Handling.

Weight? Check. At just 1850 grams, the new Scalpel 29er is the lightest 29’er dual suspension frame on the market by a big margin. Combine that with the weight savings possible with the System integration of the Lefty fork, OPI stem and Hollowgram SL cranks and you’ve got a package that will have most 26” bikes wishing they could cut back on the cheesecake.

Stiffness? Oh yes. BallisTec Carbon construction and ECS-TC stiffness-enhancing features borrowed from our OverMountain bikes ensure that the snappy feel and immediate power delivery of the 26” Scalpel continues in its 29” namesake.

Handling? Something we’re particularly proud of. Through performance-driven engineering, the Scalpel 29’er has geometry and trail manners that mimic the stable, but nimble feel of our Flash Carbon hardtails, not an easy task when you’re adding 100mm of travel.

This new 29” trail rocket shares DNA, technology, ride feel, and a name with bikes that have come before it, but in the end, the Scalpel 29’er stands alone. Rock On.

TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS:

1. SUPERLIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN No hypens needed. No footnotes. No caveats. The Scalpel 29’er frame weighs 1850g without shock, undercutting our competitor’s bare frame weights by more than 200 grams. It’s the lightest in the world, bar-none: 29-inch wheels. 100mm of suspension, front and rear. Advanced carbon frame construction. Only from Cannondale.

2. ZERO-PIVOT SEATSTAYSThe Scalpel 29’er borrows liberally from the time- and race-tested design of the original Scalpel, placing ultra-lightweight Zero-Pivot technology into the seatstays. Through precise use of fibre orientation and sophisticated carbon layup, the stays are designed to flex vertically, while remaining extremely stiff laterally and torsionally for premium power delivery. (Alloy versions receive the ECS-TC doubled bearings, like the Jekyll, in the dropout pivots in place of Zero-pivot flexing stays.)

3. C-SPAN SEAT STAY BRIDGEThe seat stays of the Scalpel 29’er are connected to each other by a beefy, bolt-on bridge, which also acts as the axle clamp for the oversized shock link thru-axle. 6. SUPER SHORT CHAINSTAYS The Scalpel 29’er has the shortest chainstays we’ve ever seen on a dual suspension ‘niner. This gives you nimbler handling, better rear-wheel tracking, point-and-shoot predictability and untouchable climbing performance. 7. ECS-TC (ENHANCED CENTER STIFFNESS-TORSION CONTROL) SYSTEMIncorporating elements of OverMountain’s ECS-TC system, the Scalpel 29’er uses 15mm thru axles that are clamped on both sides, effectively tying the two sides together and dramatically increasing the system stiffness. The alloy version gets the doubled bearings at the rear dropout as well. These combine with the incredibly light but beefy shock link to improve center-stiffness and enhance control.

8. X-12 REAR AXLE SYSTEMThe Scalpel 29’er uses the X-12 system for better, play-free clamping in both axial and radial directions during serious descents. You get the stiffness of a 12mm thru axle with the quick wheel changes and ease of use of a quick-release wheel. For those with XC stablemates in their riding quiver, the X-12 system is convertible to 135mm spacing for uniformity among cross-country rigs.

9. TYRE CLEARANCE An offset seat tube gives capacity for tyres up to 2.3 inches wide – perfect for hard-charging riders who demand the extra flotation and mud-shedding capacity of high-volume tyres.

10. ONE-PIECE SEAT TUBE AND BB NODE WITH BULKHEAD REINFORCEMENT Ships use bulkheads. Aircraft use bulkheads. Cannondale uses bulkheads. Why? Because for nominal weight they significantly improve strength and structural integrity. On the Scalpel 29’er, the down tube lug is closed at the end, forming a bulkhead that acts as a stiffening rib at the down tube / BB junction. The one-piece BB node plus BBulkhead achieves the ultimate in strength and power delivery.

11. BALLISTEC CARBONHigh-strength, high-impact carbon construction. Ultra high-strength fibres developed by the Japanese military for ballistic armoring, and impact-resistant hot-melt resins are used as the primary structural materials of the frame, while high-modulus carbon fibres are used to strategically enhance stiffness. 1. BALLISTEC CARBON Our high-strength, high-impact carbon construction, BallisTec ends the traditional connection between ultra-light carbon frames and fragility. Over. Period. End of story.

Ultra high-strength fibres, developed for military ballistic armoring, and impact-resistant hot-melt resins are used as the primary structural materials of the frame while the stiffer but more brittle high-modulus carbon fibres are used strategically in protected locations to enhance stiffness. Lighter and stiffer than aluminium, pound for pound stronger than steel, BallisTec carbon can shake off rock strikes and impacts that would cripple the competition and their carbon “shields”.

2. TUBE2TUBE CONSTRUCTIONWhen it comes to minimizing weight and maximizing stiffness, our Tube2Tube construction simply can’t be beat. Each tube is individually laid up, orienting the unidirectional fibres precisely to resist thetube-specific loads, then the tubes are joined and overwrapped following an equally precise layup schedule. Time consuming, demanding and expensive, this process yields the lightest, stiffest and strongest results.


4. SHAPE-OPTIMISED TUBINGStripped down to its bare essentials, each tube represents the saying of “form follows function”: oversized 53mm round down tube for maximum torsional rigidity, horizontally oversized top tube for lateral rigidity and ovalised Delta seat tube for maximum BB area stiffness. The straight tubing on the Flash shaves the most weight possible by enabling the carbon fibre to pull absolutely straight, which increases the performance of the fibre.

5. SPEED SAVE VIBRATION ELIMINATION TECHNOLOGYThe chain stays, seat stays and seatpost on the Flash all feature our trademark SPEED SAVE technology. Flattened cross-sections and sophisticated carbon layup allows the SPEED SAVE features to act like a micro-suspension system, deflecting vertically to absorb trail shock and vibration, while staying extremely rigid laterally for power transfer and confident cornering.

6. OPTIMISED HARDPOINTSThe Flash uses postmount disc brake mounts to save the weight of the adapter and reduce the system weight of the complete bike. Our alloy dropouts and disc mounts are lighter and stiffer than most carbon dropouts, but still have the capability of dissipating heat from the disc brake mounts during race-like conditions. The weight saving direct-mount front derailleur point is compatible with both Shimano and SRAM components.

So with our SuperSix Womens, we’re stepping up to the plate and providing women cyclists with the high performance, super lightweight, properly fitting, ass-kicking bikes that they’ve always wanted.

Loaded with all the carbon technology and performance of the SuperSix you know and love, SuperSix Women’s has the geometry, fit and component specifications specifically for women. Put yourself first.


1. DESIGNED BY WOMEN FOR WOMENWhen it comes to riding, we design bikes that take a woman’s physique into account. What does this mean? It means we offer bikes with female specific geometry to account for shorter torsos and longer legs. This translates into a shorter top tube for our shorter reach, a taller head tube to balance proportionately taller seat height, and a fork rake which minimizes toe overlap, to name a few.

2. COMFORT IS PERFORMANCENarrower bars, brake levers and controls closer to our hands and wider saddles are just some of the specific component changes we make on our Women’s bikes. Attention to details translates into comfort, efficiency, energy saving, increased fun and ultimately more time on your bike, which is what it’s all about. The goal is better fit. The result is better comfort and performance.

3. LIGHT AND STIFFExtremely lightweight (950 g) with great lateral and torsional stiffness but with an incredible road feel and liveliness often lost in carbon frames.

4. CO-CURED MONOCOQUE FRONT TRIANGLE Monocoque front triangle with optimised carbon layup, rear stays and size-specific alloy-faced full carbon dropouts are each molded as a single piece with precise radius-matched interfaces. Precise radius matching allows for maximum contact and support with the mating surface. The parts are joined by co-curing/carbon overwrapping. A more complex and expensive process, co-curing creates lighter, stiffer and stronger structures than the lugged or internal lugged junctions found on many other carbon frames.

5. BEATBOXMassively oversized Beatbox BB area delivers torsional rigidity needed to turn the twisting loads from the cranks into forward momentum.

6. ASYMMETRIC CHAIN STAYSThe drive side chain stay is oversized and shaped to resist the axial loads of the drivetrain, while the non-drive side is engineered for rigidity and greater weight saving.

7. DEEP RADIUS HEAD TUBEDeep radius head tube and 1-1/8” to 1-1/2” tapered carbon steerer fork provide maximum torsional stiffness for precise steering and wicked sprinting.

1. DESIGNED BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN When it comes to riding, we design bikes that take a woman’s physique into account. What does this mean? It means we offer bikes with female specific geometry to account for shorter torsos and longer legs. This translates into a shorter top tube for our shorter reach, a taller head tube to balance proportionately taller seat height, and a fork rake which minimizes toe overlap, to name a few.

3. OVERSIZED SHAPED DOWN TUBEThe oversized round down tube flares to meet the head tube for maximum stiffness.

4. SHAPED TOP TUBEThe massive, horizontally ovalised top tube measures a huge 47.5 x 42 mm where it meets the head tube, narrows through the middle for knee clearance, then widens again to meet the seat stays.

5. SPEED SAVE STAYSThe chain stays and seat stays are shaped and butted to allow them to flex vertically but stay extremely stiff laterally. The wide spacing of the seat stays where they meet the top tube improves lateral stiffness.

6. HOLLOW FORGED BRAKE BRIDGELight and stiff, little details like this really add up.

7. ASYMMETRIC CHAIN STAYSThe driveside chain stay is oversized to better resist the loads from the drivetrain, while the non-drive stay is optimised for weight savings.

8. DELTA SEAT TUBEThe 27.2 compatible seat tube is laterally ovalised at the BB for great BB stiffness.

9. TAPERED HEAD TUBEThe externally machined, oversized head tube houses a 1-1/8” to 1-1/4” tapered carbon steerer fork.

10. SPEED SAVE CARBON FORKThe 1-1/8” to 1-1/4” tapered carbon steerer is lighter than 1.5” tapered forks and stiffer than 1-1/8” forks. The 300 gram CAAD10 fork also features offset dropouts, allowing more fork angle for vertical compliance and toeclip clearance without affecting the handling.

HEADS-UP PERFORMANCE GEOMETRYCompared with our Elite race geometry, the Synapse geometry features a taller head tube (2-2.5 cm taller) gently sloping top tube, slightly relaxed head angle and longer wheelbase. This combination provides a more upright riding position and a lively, yet stable feel. It’s confidence inspiring and relaxing but avoids the sluggish feel and awkward handling of many “comfort” road bikes.

4. OPTIMISED 6061 ALLOY CONSTRUCTIONCannondale’s legendary double-pass smooth welds join optimally shaped taper-butted tubes for a great combination of svelte light weight, stiffness and durability.

7. BB30 SYSTEMOver 10 years ago we took a bike component that had not changed for years, the bottom bracket, and redesigned it. Oversized and stiffer, simpler and lighter and above all higher performance, the result was our BB30 bottom bracket system. BB30 has since become the leading high-performance bottom bracket design and is available on some Synapse Alloy womens models.

The Trail SL features a lighter, more aggressively butted tube set and a 1.5” head tube, to accept the stiffer, more precise handling 1.5” steerer forks.

The result is increased strength and remarkable weight savings that make for a lightweight, super enjoyable ride. The SL version benefits from refined butting that saves almost 200g.

Quick CX geometry delivers an upright riding position for increased comfort, visibility and enjoyment. Relax and enjoy the ride.

2. STYLISHLY SHAPED ALUMINIUM

Quick CX’s mechanically formed 6061 tubing is the cutting edge in aluminium crafting allowing shaping and oversizing at the more stressed areas of the frame to increase strength, rigidity and torsional resistance. Combined with heat-treating to a T6 hardness for strength and durability.

3. EXTERNALLY MACHINED HEAD TUBE

A technique Cannondale has used for years, excess material is precisely machined out of the low stress areas of the head tube, saving significant weight with no loss of strength.

4. FULLY LOADED

Quick CX comes with a mountain bike inspired frame for upright riding, comfort and improved visibility; fast 700c wheels; disc brakes; and is fender or rear rack ready. Whatever style of riding you’re thinking of, Quick CX has it covered.
