MESSAGE FROM THE CONFERENCE CHAIR

On behalf of the Canadian Association of Neonatal Nurses 2018 National Conference Committee and the Board of Directors, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all of you.

We are very excited to bring you an engaging and relevant program inspired by our theme "Neonatal Care: It Takes a Village”. The next 2½ days will feature an impressive line-up of general session speakers as well as concurrent sessions and poster presentations. Together we will learn from the research and explore innovative ideas and discuss emerging topics and trends that are forging the way to improved neonatal nursing care.

The conference also offers excellent networking opportunities and social events beginning with a welcome reception on Friday evening in the exhibit hall, where you will enjoy a little mixing and mingling and have the opportunity to network with colleagues from across the country. On Saturday evening we invite you to kick back and relax as you join us for dinner and an evening of fun and dancing – the evening will begin with our CANN Marketplace and you will have the chance to win a few prizes.

Once again this year we are very fortunate to have many exhibitors and partners supporting the conference and our Association and we would like to acknowledge them for their very generous support. Please take the time to visit the exhibit hall to view and learn about the newest developments and advancements in equipment, products and services for neonatal care.

In closing, we would like to thank you for making the decision to participate in the CANN 2018 National Conference. We hope you return home with a renewed passion and a sense of belonging to our vibrant and caring Village. While this conference is hosted by CANN, we want to recognize that to raise a NICU graduate it takes a team… the “village”… it is all of us working together with neonates, and with their families. We would also like to welcome and recognize those who are joining us from different disciplines. CANN is proud to help facilitate all members of the team in coming together to work and to share knowledge, and to help improve the overall outcome for our patients and families. Together we can make a difference every day.

I look forward to meeting many of you over the course of the next few days – enjoy the conference!

Nicole Cook, LPN

Nicole Cook grew up in Prince Albert in an environment with many hardships. Her family had very little money and she and her siblings would often be left to their own devices for survival. Despite the challenges she endured, Nicole was the first in her family to graduate from high school. She went on to study nursing. Shortly after her graduation from the nursing program she welcomed her first child into the world, who was born with complex medical needs. Her struggle to find the necessary support and care for her son led her to Jacqueline Tisher, who shared her determination to make the world a better place, and the modest daycare that would become Hope's Home. Today, Nicole is the chief operating officer of Hope's Home, a medical daycare that provides services for children with complex medical needs including early learning programs, daycare, respite and supportive living homes. Starting as an LPN within the organization, she continued to take on various leadership roles and core responsibilities, eventually finding her niche as a passionate leader alongside the CEO. Nicole has incredible vision and a knack for turning innovative ideas into reality, which secured her an integral role in growing Hope's Home from a small organization to the provincial corporation it has become. She oversees and improves all the functional aspects of the organization from finances and human resources to the day-to-day operations of nursing and early childhood education. Although she hasn’t had professional training in every one of these aspects, she makes it her personal mission to research
