Thank you for entering the 2019 Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) Canine Competition presented by Black Hawk. On behalf of the Canine Committee I would like to acknowledge the generous support of Black Hawk as well as Plush Puppy, Dogs Queensland, Dog News Australia, Guide Dogs Queensland and many other sponsors across the various breeds who help to make this competition such a success.

The Canine Competition is one of Ekka’s largest and most loved competitions. This year it has attracted more than 2,700 entries, with around 160 different breeds to be judged from Akita to Foxhound and Keeshond to Xoloitzcuintle.

We have once again produced this special guide for exhibitors which features essential competition information, what’s new, a program guide and an overview of the competition. It is available for download at www.ekka.com.au and will be updated regularly.

Your canines will be judged in their group on one day, with international judges flying in all the way from Ireland, Panama, Finland and Latvia. This revolutionary judging system was first introduced in 2016; ensuring exhibitors can plan ahead knowing that all group judging will take place on a single day.

This year we are delighted to be staging the Canine Competition in its new home – Alexandria Park on the corner of Gregory Terrace and Alexandria Street. The park features two acres of additional green and event space, including an existing undercover events pavilion known as Building 8.

The building has been extensively refurbished to enhance its heritage elements and will be used for competition benching, providing exhibitors with one central benching area. Meanwhile the canine judging ring will be located in a custom marquee on the grass, allowing entrants to exhibit their dogs on real turf with improved direct access to the judging rings. The park will also offer greatly improved lighting, power, ambience and better facilities and access for public viewing.

We are excited to showcase Non-Sporting Dogs as the feature show, to be conducted in addition to the Royal Queensland Show classes. Judging will take place on Tuesday 13th August from 9am.

New this year is Champion Junior Handler, with the winners of classes 109A, 109B and 109C invited back to compete for this coveted title on Saturday 17th August, before the Best in Show Judging under an international judge.

The last Sunday starts at 9am with Rally Obedience, Dances with Dogs, Agility, and Jumping – it promises to be a jam-packed day full of activity for all to enjoy!

The drop-off and pick-up point is located on Alexandria Street and is accessible via the vehicle and trailer parking area located off St Pauls Terrace. Please refer to the maps on page 2. The location of the pick-up / drop-off point will ensure an easy process to get your canines to the correct location.

Exhibitors with a vehicle and dog trailer can park in the designated canine pick up and drop off area, located on Alexandria Street, opening from 6am. You will be able to pre-book these once entries open and they will be issued on a first in first served basis. Exhibitors who are entering with a vehicle without a trailer, will be able to park in the newly constructed King Street car park (max height 2.2m), just one street adjacent to where the competition will take place. Please note, parking in the King Street car park can’t be pre-booked.

ALEXANDRIA PARK – NEW HOME FOR CANINESIn 2019 we are excited to welcome you to Alexandria Park, the new home of the Ekka’s Championship Canine Competition presented by Black Hawk. Following almost a year of construction Alexandria Park was completed in late April and is another major investment in our traditions and facilities as part of the $2.9 billion Brisbane Showgrounds Regeneration Project, which is providing exhibitors and patrons with world-class facilities to use.Located on the corner of Gregory Terrace and Alexandria Street, the park features two acres of additional green and event space, including an existing undercover events pavilion known as Building 8. The building has undergone extensive refurbishment works to enhance its heritage elements and will be used for competition benching, providing exhibitors with one central benching area.
