The President’s Message

President’s Message for May 2016Camping on the Dogs Queensland Sports Ground

It is with great pleasure that I can inform members that the Dogs Queensland camping permit has finally been approved by the Brisbane City Council. This has been quite a long process and would not have been possible without our hard working volunteers on the camping working party, Deputy Manager Mr Gary Paul and our General Manager Mr Rob Harrison. I’m sure it goes without saying, that your tireless efforts and contributions to our organisation are greatly appreciated. I have heard one or two Members suggest that a $20 per night fee is somewhat excessive. This figure is in line with fees charged by other state bodies and I would remind members also that the fees alone applicable to this permit amount to in excess of $50,000 over a 4 year period.

Dogs Queensland Office - Service Delivery Review

I have had several discussions with various organisations about conducting a service delivery review of the Dogs Queensland office. Whilst most of these organisations had a very good understanding of the processes we were looking for, the estimated costs of the review have been substantial and well above what the Board was hoping to spend. It has not been uncommon to have estimates of $50,000 to $100,000 provided. The Board will be discussing our options moving forward on the service delivery review, with a view to a more cost effective approach. This could involve utilising the services of an independent member or members, with expertise in human resources to assist in the conducting of the service delivery review.

Rules Review

The Constitution and Rules Reform Committee will be presenting the revised Rules to the Board in May. Once the Board have reviewed the proposed amendments/revisions, we would hope to have the new Rule Book ready for release to the members by mid year. A great deal of work has gone into the Rules reform, and I would like to extend a huge thanks to every member of the Committee for your hard work.

Dogs Queensland Christmas Party

The Board has decided to review the way in which the yearly Christmas party is run and the way in which certain members are invited. It is felt that under the current approach, the Christmas party will become too big and that we should be limiting the attendance.

Much discussion has also been had about having a more widespread Christmas event for our membership. The Directors show will now be a Christmas Show with Santa making an appearance for the kids, and a sausage sizzle being run for members along with other activities during the night. The Christmas show is on Friday the 16th of December 2016.

Drought Relief Shows

On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Mr Craig Pettett and the Gladstone Kennel Club for their recently held Drought Relief Shows at the end of January. The Shows raised $7,162, which was donated to the Western Queensland Drought Appeal. This organisation was selected because they are completely non-profit and don’t take any administration fees out of donations.

Notice to advertisersThe Trade Practices Act came into force on 1st October 1974. Certain provisions of the act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted for publication comply with the act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the act are strictly complied with. In cases of doubt, advertisers are advised to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.

The Board wish to remind members of the next Board of Directors' Forum which is being held at Durack in the Function Room on Sunday 22nd May from 12:30pm (light refreshments provided). It is hoped that members will come along in a more relaxed fashion to have a chat with Board Members, more in the style of a casual afternoon tea with Directors.

In addition, a Trivia Evening is being organised for the same evening starting at 5:00pm.

All are welcome and it is hoped that members will come along to enjoy an informal afternoon with the Directors and stay on for trivia in the evening.

Show and Trial Dates

All Clubs holding any Shows or Trials in 2017 are reminded that all requests for alterations are required to be submitted to the Dogs Queensland Office no later than 30th June 2016.

The Grounds Committee will shortly be conducting special instruction sessions for the use of canteen equipment by Clubs. This will ensure that everyone using the facilities in the canteen uses them properly. All persons and Clubs using the canteen will be required to attend one of these sessions or else they would be denied access to the canteen.

Clubs will also be required to pay a bond of $100 for the canteen and in the event of the deep fryer being used, a further amount of $50 be charged and retained to cover the cost of oil used in the deep fryer.

If a Club forfeits its bond of $100 as the result of leaving the canteen not satisfactorily cleaned, it will be required to pay a bond of double the amount ($200) and if that does not cover the

cleaning costs, then the Club be required to pay the balance of the costs incurred to clean the canteen.

Under the SpotlightSpecial Feature by Queensland Field Trial Judge, Elio Colasimone.

Throughout the world, breed organisations engage dogs and handlers in a plethora of hunting Tests and Trials to measure performance.

Bundaberg Judge, Elio Colasimone, is seen here receiving a warm South American welcome from Argentine competitors Argentine Clubs stick strictly to the internationally sanctioned FCI rules.

Locality: Las Flores region – Provincia de Buenos Aires (approx 180km south of Buenos Aires).

Terrain: Generally flat, extensive area of grassland used for cattle rearing, interspersed with cropping fields.

The area had drainage systems and the occasional small waterhole.

The cover was mostly low to light with the dogs completely visible at all times. The quarry was the highly valued and abundant Perdiz (Supersized Quail).

International Compettions: Trialling In Argentina: Host: Kurzhaar Club de la Republica Argentina

Some years back Queensland Retrieving and Field Trial Judge, Elio Colasimone, was invited to judge a Field Trial in Argentina.

Pictured above: Argentine competitors and their dogs

Conditions:

The mornings started with temperatures below 10 degrees and stayed quite cool all day. The breeze was consistently one-directional, remaining moderate to above throughout the weekend.

In all, the conditions were perfect for a pointing breed such as the Kurzhaar (known in Australia as the German Shorthaired Pointer).Mr. Colasimone found the dog work was of a very high standard and comparable to the work of the best dogs we have here in Australia.

He states: “It was good to see the camaraderie and the good sportsmanship shown by the handlers, even in cases where the dogs let the handlers down badly. Everyone seemed to retain a sense of humour.”

The Part B theory examinations will take place in early July. Trainees are encouraged to gain more knowledge by speaking with breeders and exhibitors of breeds in the group they are studying.

This should give you a much better understanding of the Breed Standards – the description of the ‘form and function’ of the breeds.

All Judges are reminded they must advise the Show Manager of their arrival at a Show when they are judging.

Lately, several instances have had Show Managers stressing that judges have not arrived. Judges need to allow time to meet their Steward/Writer and find out where their judging ring is situated. Championship Judges also need time to sign challenge certificates/stewards sheets etc.

Also published below is a ‘Dress Code’ for judges.

Several trainees have taken the time to offer suggestions for improvements to the training scheme.

Thank you.

Often, some ideas cannot be implemented; however others can be adapted or included when our regulations are updated.

Notes from the Conformation Judges Committee

Dress Code for Judges - Suggested points to consider

• You are a professional. Dress in a neat, smart, business-like manner

• Judges may need to wear sunglasses for health and safety reasons and for comfort

• However, try to avoid using those brightly coloured, reflective sunglasses. They may cause a negative reaction from some dogs

• Shoes should be comfortable and 'closed in'. Again, for health reasons, you may need to wear supportive footwear – i.e. quality sports shoes. Please, no scruffy 'joggers'

• Female judges should consider necklines and dress length. It may be more practical to wear slacks

Dogs Queensland NoticesThe Queensland Dog World

www.dogsqueensland.org.au May 2016 - 11

• Long flowing dresses may annoy some dogs

• The same goes for too much jewellery, especially rings and bracelets which can get caught in a dog’s coat

• Men require business-style dress. Dress pants, shirt and tie as a minimum plus jacket (may be optional depending on weather and event) - for some events a full suit may be more appropriate

• Be prepared for wet weather, hot weather or cold weather. Many dogs do not like 'people in hats'. However at the end of the day, it is your health and well-being that could be at risk.

• All clothing should be clean and in good condition. It does not have to be the latest fashion or the most expensive

• Be remembered for the quality of your judging, not your fashion sense or lack thereof!

Queensland Dog World Library NewsThe Queensland Dog World

www.dogsqueensland.org.au12 - May 2016

For anyone interested in researching the breeds featured this month, look no further than the Library at Durack. We have copies of books relevant to both breeds.

‘Pyrenean Dogs’ by Duconte and J.A. Sabouraud is translated by Diane Powell and Alan Harwood. Mr Harwood was Secretary of the Pruenean Mountain Dog Cliub of Great Britain when this book was published in 1983. The book is concerned with two distinct breeds of dog which, in their native Pryenean Mountains, are working partners. One of them is the little Pryenean Sheepdog and the other the Pryenean Mountain Dog. This book covers interesting facts and figures on both. ‘The Pryenean Mountain Dog’ by John Gordon was first published in 1978 and also includes the origin and history of not only the Pryenean Mountain Dog but also the Pryenean Sheepdog and Tibetan Mastiff. Both books are most informative.

Two books I selected on the Irish Wolfhound are ‘The Irish Wolfhound in Competition’ and ‘The Magnificent Irish Wolfhound’. ‘The Irish Wolfhound in Competition’ was donated to the Library by the author, Alfred de Quoy. First published in 1980, this book has listings of all Champions in most countries including Australia up to and including 1979. See this month’s Book Review for more information on ‘The Magnificent Irish Wolfhound’.

I mentioned in this column some time back that in the Durack Library, there is a glass cabinet which we purchased for use for anyone wishing to showcase breed memorabilia or Club Trophies. Sadly this offer has not been taken up by anyone – so it sits there in a rather sad and empty state. If you have Club or personal memorabilia you really don’t have a place for, check this out.

Library records show that there are books outstanding and need to be returned. If you have borrowed books, please can you return these. If the Library is closed, books can be left in the Show Secretary’s Office. I have organised with the Grounds Caretaker that any books left there will be put in the Library.

Thank you for your support.

Book ReviewThe Queensland Dog World

Sometimes in my research of the Library for books on featured breeds, I come across a book that is really stunning – this is one of them.

Published in 1998, it is a large book of over 300 pages in almost A4 size. It is full of the most amazing colour photographs of the Irish Wolfhound.

The author, Mary McBryde, has been involved in this breed all her life since 14 years old and bred her first litter at the age of 16.

Mary is also an International Championship Judge.

An extract from the preface states ‘This is one of the most impressive books ever published on a single breed’.

The opening chapter titled ‘Living with Wolfhounds’ lists all of the joys and pitfalls of living with the biggest of dog breeds.

Chapters on the history, breeding and showing complete this inspiring book.

‘The Magnificent Irish Wolfhound’Written by Mary McBryde

Feature BreedThe Queensland Dog World

www.dogsqueensland.org.au14 - May 2016

The Irish Wolfhound is a magnificent, ancient, regal, loyal and protective breed.

The Irish Wolfhound comes in many varieties of colours from black to, in some cases, pure white. A common coat pattern in the breed is brindle markings; any colour found in the breed standard of the Scottish Deerhound is acceptable in the Irish Wolfhound.

They are extremely intelligent, fearsome with at times appearing intimidating and dominant, should be commanding in appearance with a gentle slight fierce gaze. Irish Wolfhounds have unique and varied personalities with not one being the same as the next. They develop their own personal quirks and individualism.

The Irish Wolfhound originates from Ireland and through history has been recognised as a national breed icon. They were traditionally bred for the purpose of eradicating native wolves from Ireland as they were considered a pest for farmers and their livestock.

The Irish Wolfhound is depicted as early as 273BC and was an ancient dog of war fighting in the front lines of warriors. The Irish Wolfhound was commonly gifted to royal or noble households, particularly sent to European sovereignty. Some were even recorded as being sent to ancient Rome as mentioned in writings by Julius Caesar. They were sent as a gift for fighting lions and bears and all of Rome viewed the Irish Wolfhound in wonder.

The modern Irish Wolfhound was in fact a re-creation of the ancient breed and the origin of the modern breed we adore and love today was restored by Captain George Augustus Graham, along with a few other breeders in the 1880s. To ensure the breeds continuation, he acquired some of the remaining Irish Wolfhounds that were known descendents of the original breed and bred these dogs to various breeds including Borzoi, Great Dane, Scottish Deerhound, English Mastiff and also introduced a Tibetan Wolf Dog (which is believed to have been a Tibetan Mastiff).

The thing I personally love about this breed is that they are slow maturing. Although they have a faster physical growth rate being a giant breed, their minds and maturity do take some length of time to develop. This is particularly nice knowing they don’t have the longest lifespan.

The Irish Wolfhound has not been a top winning breed consistently throughout Queensland and even nationally but when one does achieve top awards, the greater community is collectively happy for the breed recognition. Irish Wolfhounds really finish maturing physically between the ages of 2-3 years but continually age and mature throughout their remaining years.

The coat needs regular weekly grooming to remove the dead hair. The coat should appear wiry but more importantly the texture must be wiry. Hand stripping or plucking of the hair from the ears, top of head and skull, parts of the neck, front of legs and some body coat can be done when presenting your Irish Wolfhound for the conformation ring. The length to which one goes in grooming of their dog is completely subject to individual taste and it is not essential for the breed but is desired among exhibitors and judges.

The Irish Wolfhound yearns to be accepted as part of a family unit and it is necessary the breed is very involved in day to day routines of a family unit. This breed is incredibly loyal and protective so early socialisation with both people and dogs is essential. This breed is not a guard dog but is very protective over their family members. They are commonly standoffish with strangers but their true nature is determined in the comfort of their own homes. The term ‘Gentle Giant’ holds true as the true nature of this breed is “Gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked”.

Commanding in Appearance

When an Irish Wolfhound enters the ring, it needs to be commanding in appearance which is a distinct hallmark of the breed. Depending on the age of the Irish Wolfhound, the appearance will vary and will be judged accordingly. The head should be carried high but it is not uncommon to be held just over their level top line.

The breed is a sighthound bred for long solitary hunts based on the breed’s ability to visualise its landscape and perceive, unlike scent hounds they rely on sight. When moving with an easy active gait, they may hold their heads with a concentrating gaze. Once used to hunt wolves, they should appear fast enough to catch one and strong enough to kill one.

Typically the breed should never be shy or aggressive but do not include misbehaved, untrained or inexperienced dogs in this category. A shy dog does not have the ability to be commanding in appearance but of course do not include the abovementioned and judge according to age and maturity of the Irish Wolfhound. This is not a fault in the breed standard but a generalised insight to the behavioural traits.

Lambs at Home, Lions on the Chase

I really hope you have enjoyed this insight to the magnificent breed, the Irish Wolfhound and hope that it was both interesting and informative. If you have any further questions on the breed, please contact the Irish Wolfhound Club of Queensland or feel free to ask questions in person to any Irish Wolfhound exhibitor.

The Pyrenean Mountain Dog is an aristocratic breed, regal in bearing and of exceeding beauty. In size slightly smaller than the Saint Bernard, his thick long white coat of white, or white fur marked about the head and ears with patches of badger (combination of white, grey, brown and black hairs varying in shades), yellow or tan, giving them a striking appearance.

The Pyrenean was originally bred to guard flocks of sheep and goats from wolves and bears in the rugged regions of the Pyrenees, a mountain range on the French and Spanish border, from where they obtain their name.

In a book ‘The New Book of the Dog’, published in 1911 by Robert Leighton, he points out that, in spite of the fact that Pyreneans are predominantly white and Tibetan Mastiffs are usually black, black and tan, or red, these two breeds have much in common. He writes “but for the difference in colour, the Pyrenean bears considerable resemblance to the Mastiff of Tibet.

Somewhat higher on leg and perhaps less muscular, it has the same massive body, the same character and texture of coat and the same form of head.” Both of these breeds are more for protecting sheep rather than herding.

It is now strongly believed that the Pyreneans, along with other breeds that commonly protect flocks such as the Maremma, Leonberger and Kuvasz, originated from the high plateaus of Tibet. With the shepherds, they migrated across Europe where the dogs developed in various mountain ranges into their various breeds;for example Pyrenean Mountain Dogs from the Pyrenees,

Maremma Sheepdogs from Italy and the Kuvasz from Hungary.

The first written reference to Pyreneans is to be found in the archives at Foix, a town in the foothills of the Pyrenees, where it is said that Pyreneans helped save the life of Charles VI in 1391.

The king was on his way to Mazeres when he was charged by a bull which was turned aside by Pyreneans and accompanying knights. Pyreneans have also been used in French castles and chateaux as early as 1407, where they would wear spiked collars and guard against thieves.

M.W. Byasson, an early judge of the breed, published a booklet at the turn of the century describing how members of French royalty became ensnared by the Pyrenean’s beauty. Madame de Maintenon visited Barreges in 1675, accompanied by the young Dauphin, son of Louis XIV.

In the countryside, the boy made friends with a gorgeous male Pyrenean about eight months old. The two became inseparable and eventually returned together to live at the Louvre, causing quite a sensation in the French court, and ownership of Pyreneans by members of the French nobility became quite fashionable.

Over the years, Pyreneans have also been used to carry contraband across the French and Spanish borders, using trails that were impassable to man; thereby avoiding customs officers. They have been used as pack dogs, pulling carts and sleds and as guide dogs in the deep snow.

The Red Cross has also been known to use them in times of war to pull in dead and injured soldiers to safety and help.

The fame of Pyreneans was growing outside France by the early 1800s with regard to their benefits to protecting sheep and livestock. The first Pyrenean to arrive in the United States was owned by Mr. Beaudry of Delaware and in 1824 a Mr. Skinner obtained two from General Lafayette. At about this time, the first Pyreneans were arriving in the United Kingdom.

Pyreneans arrived on our shores for the first time in 1843 at Portland, Victoria, owned by an Irishman; Samuel Pratt Winter. In 1838, Winter had started a sheep station, and when he saw the breed in France in 1842, he purchased some Pyreneans as he realised that they would be beneficial against predators on his sheep station. These Pyreneans in the early 1850’s were being used in their traditional roles on his sheep station, sleeping between two flocks and guarding them while their shepherds slept.

The next Pyreneans to arrive in Australia was in 1939, imported by Mr. James Gatehouse. These dogs were of great interest to the public at various KCC shows. Since the 1940s, the number of Pyreneans has grown in this country due to the dedication of a small band of breeders. Pyrenean Mountain Dogs still remain classed as a rare breed compared to their other giant breed counterparts, the Newfoundland and Saint Bernard.

Average size, weight and lifespan

Dogs a minimum of 70cm (27.5 inches) and 50kg. Bitches 65cm (25.5 inches) and 40kg. Many dogs and bitches exceed these heights and weights.

Ideal owners

Pyreneans are happy being around their family, whether going for walks or just being a couch potato. They can be very alert at night due to their instinctive guarding heritage so they can be night time barkers, this is usually solved by having a radio playing near where they sleep.

Care requirements

Due to the coat, this breed needs regular grooming and loves going for long or short walks as they are not a high energy dog. They need to be trained from a young age by firm but gentle handling techniques, as one has to remember that this breed was bred to think for themselves and they grow quickly into a large dog. They generally will not chase balls and can have selective deafness when being called, so a well fenced yard is essential.

Club InterestThe Queensland Dog World

www.dogsqueensland.org.au20 - May 2016

Taking the leadership role, our Club President Andrew Brown gladly welcomed all members to what we hope is the start of a welcoming Club that will be recognised both nationally and internationally. We hope to promote the breed within Queensland and gain breed exposure for the majestic breed.

Our Vice President Lorraine Benson has also come on board to offer her vast knowledge or Irish Wolfhound health issues and history of the breed in Australia. Both Andrew and Lorraine are the longest standing breeders in our State that are currently still very active in the wider community.

We hope to grow as a Club which offers breed education, support and will strive to be a Club for all members who share both

The Start Of Something New!On the 20th of February 2016, Irish wolfhound breeders, exhibitors and fanciers alike all came together with the common interest in forming a breed specialty club. The last known active Irish Wolfhound breed club was around in the 70s and 80s but had since disbanded and the breed in Queensland somewhat diminished and rarely seen since.

similar and different interests. We host social events throughout the year which include St Patricks Day Parade, Beach Walks and recreational outings, charity events, and hopefully future breed matches.

We have many members in the Club already both local and interstate who are willing to help new people coming into the breed. If you are interested in joining our Breed Club, please contact the Club via email, details below.

Our future goal of affiliation with Dogs Queensland is a dream almost coming to fruition which is extremely exciting. We hope to offer Breed Specialty Conformation Shows with the hopes of sourcing international breed judges allowing them to experience

judging in our wonderful State. We will then be able to host Open Show specialties for aspiring hound judges, organise breed seminars and also we hope to encourage more Irish Wolfhound owners to participate in further dog sports offered by Dogs Queensland such as Lure Coursing, Dances with Dogs, Agility and Obedience.

If you have any questions, please contact the Club directly and we will be able to answer your questions or point you in the best direction.

unting dogs resembling Irish Wolfhounds have been in evidence since 1400BC. Throughout history, they have been praised for their gentle temperament and love of their

human companions, while at the same time being great hunters. The early hounds were used for hunting, for companionship, and for gifts to all manner of noble and wealthy people.

There are many myths and legends surrounding the Irish Wolfhound, and many books available on the subject for those who are keen to learn more. They all show the Wolfhound as having a wonderful temperament - here’s little translation from the Saga of the Burnt Njal (9th - 10th century) as an illustration: “I will give a hound that was given to me in Ireland… it is part of his nature that he has a man’s wit, and he will bay at every man he knows to be thy foe, but never at thy friends. He can see, too, in any man’s face whether he means thee well or ill, and he will lay down his life to be true to thee.”

Side note…the term 'greyhound' is used in historical terms to refer to a broad group of hunting dogs including what we now refer to collectively as sighthounds.

To meet today’s Irish Wolfhounds in a fabulous historical context and learn more about them, visit us at the Knights of the Longdog encampment at the Abbey Medieval Festival in Caboolture. It's on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of July 2016.

May

There are also several other events just outside of Zone 2 that our members will be travelling to. Safe travels to all attending events throughout April.

Ag Shows

We have now hit Ag Show season with quite a few scheduled over the coming months.

During May, one of my favourite Ag Shows that I have been to for many years is the Alpha Show. This is one of the smallest Shows in Zone 2 and is in a remote location some 450km dead west of Rockhampton – so really getting into red soil area. The show itself is a real country Show and lovely fun to attend as well as being a big boom for the local community. Where else can one enjoy the Governor General, a pig, the public and the showgirls all wandering through the assembly area.

Please try to support Ag Shows wherever possible – they are often smaller affairs and struggle financially, so our ongoing support is critical to their sustainability. These are one of the few opportunities we have where we are on display to the general public so it’s a great PR opportunity for Dogs Queensland.

The financial benefit of having a dog Show in a small community cannot be ignored either and our attendance does have a positive impact.

Bundaberg Easter Shows

The Bundaberg Canine Club hosted a very successful cluster of six Championship Shows over the Easter long weekend in the undercover arena at the Bundaberg Recreational Precinct.

The cluster featured an international panel of judges and exhibitors responded with a very large entry received.

Unfortunately, there were some of the inevitable issues that do crop up, but the club managed these efficiently to ensure that everything ran smoothly. It takes a lot of effort and commitment to present an event of this nature so well done to the Club and Committee, and I’m sure they are enjoying a well-earned rest now.

Keeping Things Clean

After a few recent Shows in Zone 2, exhibitors are reminded to be responsible for their dog droppings and rubbish.

At a recent Show weekend, despite several requests to members to clean up after their dogs, there were bombs everywhere. It is not exactly a positive image for Dogs Queensland to hear, “yes, the purebred dogs had a Show here on the weekend and left great steaming piles of dog excrement behind for people to walk in”.

Zone 2 ShowcaseThe Queensland Dog World

www.dogsqueensland.org.au May 2016 - 23

This selfish and irresponsible behaviour could also jeopardise our ability to use the venues we are using for dog shows – if we don’t treat them with respect, we will lose them.

At the same weekend, rubbish was being thrown on top of (only fall on the ground around it) or beside already full bins when there were plenty of other bins only a short distance away where the rubbish could have been placed appropriately.

Please, please, please – clean up after your dogs and be responsible with rubbish. It is extremely unfair on the Committees who work hard to put on these events for us, to treat them like slaves to pick up after us when we’re grotty. Please treat the facilities we use as you would your own home – well, respectfully at least.

A small minority of ignorant, irresponsible exhibitors are impacting everyone through their poor behaviour in this regard.

Zone 2 Exhibitors Enjoy Food Sponsorship

At the Callide Valley Canine Club shows in early March, exhibitors enjoyed a great surprise with the Club able to secure food sponsorship from the Real Pet Food Company for the two Championship Shows.

The generous food sponsorship provided bags of food for Best In Group, Runner Up In Group, Best In Show, Runner Up In Show and all Show Classes.

This made for a very impressive prize table for exhibitors and I’m sure was a hit with the dogs as well. It was terrific to see a food supplier supporting regional Clubs.

The Club would like to thank the Real Pet Food Company for sponsorship of the Shows, it was very greatly appreciated.

CRUFTS

his was my fourteenth trip to Crufts—though I had not been there for the last four years. It is still the best and biggest dog Show in the world—22,000 dogs judged in breed

rings over the four days, hundreds of sales stalls, demonstrations, exhibitions and the Arena holding 7,000 people where the HTM and Freestyle were held, also over the four days many events on all day.

Best In Show was the crowning glory at the end (also in the Arena) and a stunning West Highland White Terrier was the winner (the first in 27 years). Mary Ray’s famous routine was fabulous—a tango with Levi, his last performance as he is now retired.

The dog and bitch Obedience Championships were hotly contested with Mary and Levi coming 2nd in the dog ring.

The World Cup was as usual bright and colourful, though only 6 teams entered. Winner was Wales with England second, Scotland third and Northern Ireland fourth—a UK clean sweep. Mary and Levi were the Top Handler with Wales runner-up. Pity it was the last to be held at Crufts, being replaced with Rally from next year. I don’t know that they will get the interest or the crowds that the World Cup has.

I thought the HTM and Freestyle were a very good standard—especially the International section.

First in the UK Freestyle was a Paddington Bear routine—second International was varied and colourful—England came first with Japan second and Czech Rep. third. I just loved the fast action of the Japanese routine and also the rock and roll from the Czech.

There was also an interesting routine from Austria with a young guy starting and finishing on a hoverboard! Great to catch up with Mary again, she looked so well and all her performances were outstanding.

Heaps of clips are on Crufts YouTube.

any Terriers and Dachshunds were bred originally to hunt, chase, go to ground and bolt quarry of one kind or another, usually fox, otter and badger.

Today, the sport of Earthdog allows these dogs to use their natural instincts in a safe, simulated hunting environment. They can have lots of fun, and earn titles too.

Earthdogs are tested on their ability to enter the den, find their way to the ‘quarry’ through a series of turns and tunnels, and work the quarry. These challenges become increasingly difficult at each stage.

Dens are constructed as a series of trenches dug in the earth, into which 3-sided liners are fitted. The liners are in sections and have wooden roof and sides, the floor is the exposed dirt. This means that tunnels are totally safe and cannot collapse and also that they can be configured in any manner.

In the Earthdog Instinct Certificate test, the total length of the den is only 3 metres, with one turn; but by Masters level there are over 9 metres of tunnel, with multiple turns, exits, false dens, a constriction and an obstruction.

Which Dogs Qualify?Dogs six months of age or older and registered with the ANKC are eligible to participate in Earthdog Tests, as are spayed and neutered dogs with Limited Registration provided they are classified as eligible breeds. The following breeds are classified as eligible to participate in ANKC Earthdog Tests:

Dachshunds, Australian Terriers, Australian Silky Terriers, Bedlington Terriers, Border Terriers, Cairn Terriers, Dandie Dinmont Terriers, Fox Terriers (Smooth and Wirehaired), German Hunt Terriers, Glen of Imaal Terriers, Jack Russell Terriers, Lakeland Terriers, Manchester Terriers, Miniature Pinschers, Norfolk Terriers, Norwich Terriers, Parson Russell Terriers, Scottish Terriers, Sealyham Terriers, Skye Terriers, Tenterfield Terriers, Welsh Terriers and West Highland White Terriers.

Dogs on the Associate Register that are of earthdog type are also eligible to participate. These dogs must have successfully qualified in the Earthdog Instinct Certificate test on at least one occasion prior to being eligible to enter the Novice Earthdog Test.

On the 12th of March 2016 Irish Wolfhound owners and their hounds took to the streets of the Brisbane CBD as participants in the annual St Patricks Day Parade March which celebrates all things IRISH! This year was particularly special as we had a representation of 13 Irish Wolfhounds in the parade which is the most they have ever had participate in a march to date.

All hounds and owners braved the increasingly humid temperatures to show off this magnificent breed which is still in some ways very much considered a rare breed in Australia, particularly rare in sunny Queensland.

From traditional Irish Dancers and Marching Bands, to the Gaelic Football Club and another native breed of Ireland (the Irish Setters), we did very well representing the Irish Wolfhound in a positive light, offering many pats and cuddles to onlookers breaking through the barrier of intimidation some may feel experiencing a giant breed.

A wonderful time was had by all who attended in true Irish spirit.

ver the years, there have been many imports into the Golden Retriever World in Australia. Since the onset of the 180 days for rabies prior to import, the numbers have started to drop

as it is now becoming very cost prohibitive to import as often as we once did.

However, there is occasionally an upside to this as the young dogs can be shown and also health tested prior to leaving the country of origin. Here follows a rather “good news” story of a situation such as this.

William and Karen Vowell of Alubyc Goldens purchased an 8-week-old puppy in Ireland mid 2015, and were fortunate to have a wonderful breeder/exhibitor, Kerrie Kelly, who was prepared to campaign this young dog whilst in her care.

Malachi excelled in Irish competition with many “In Show” awards as a puppy, the cream of these being 5 Best in Gundog Group, a Best in Show All Breeds and Reserve in Show All Breeds. He also won Best Puppy at the two Golden Retriever Specialty Shows he attended.

Still, the goal was set higher; CRUFTS.

Due to the heavy winter and bad weather crossing the channel to get to England to qualify for CRUFTS, there were only going to be two chances for Malachi to try for the big time.

On his second crossing in late November 2015, he became CRUFTS QUALIFIED and the adventure began. To attend CRUFTS involved his export to Australia being delayed by a few weeks so he could attend.

On Friday the 11th of March, just three days prior to departing for Australia, this young dog attended the most highly respected dog show in the world and competed.

The record entry of well over 500 Goldens for 2016 was the second largest to Labradors only.

Malachi, “ZENEVIEVA NORTH ATLANTIC DRIFT JD (Irish Junior Diploma) won the Puppy Dog Class and went on to be crowned BEST GOLDEN RETRIEVER PUPPY CRUFTS 2016 under the highly esteemed breed specialist Mrs Hilary Lambshead.

We are proud to say Malachi will be a permanent resident in Queensland.

SHOW

Ashlyn TrebbinCHATwith

Comedian, Radio Announcer and Mum, Ashlyn Trebbin is the daughter of Group 6 Judge, Dr. Sue Montgomery and protégée of all-breeds veteran Stefanie Smith. Find her showing Chihuahuas and Bichons (and the odd Dobermann or Rotty) around SE QLD and Northern NSW, usually hanging onto a baby with one hand and a glass of wine in the other. Drop her an email any time from the Mexicatl website - www.mexicatl.com

ocial Media has become a massive part of the way we socialise, interact and find information. I don’t know about you, but

when a breaking news story occurs, I usually first see it on social media, like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram before I see it on the television or hear it on the radio. Not too long ago, you had to wait to call someone’s house phone in the evening to get results from the day’s Shows, now you can usually access them on Facebook within minutes of dogs being awarded.

How wonderful technology is!

Social media has affected the dog world so positively in so many ways. I love getting the results fast, but also being able to access breed entry numbers and schedules online. I also am an online entries convert – if I have to fill in paper entries these days, I usually don’t bother entering (sorry!).

You can see beautiful photos taken at Shows, and you can easily put a face to the name of other exhibitors. I have trawled through many a bichon photo, looking at the beautiful grooming by other handlers and trying to emulate it at home.

Most Clubs have their own Facebook pages now, so you can easily access information about the Shows they put on, like parking and ring allocation. They can also quickly and easily share info from Club meetings, ask for help finding Writers and Stewards at the last minute and give any updates for extreme weather.

One of my favourite things about social media is the social side of it. I have ‘met’ and offered advice to a few new exhibitors via the ‘newbies’ pages. I also like to be able to put a face to puppy enquiries I receive by phone and email. Through Facebook, I have been able to maintain contact with interstate exhibitors who I have befriended at big Shows.

I can’t say it enough, social media really is such a great resource.

Of course, as superman says, with great power comes great responsibility. For a moment, I’ll put my broadcaster cap on and make it very clear – when you post on any social media platform, you are in effect broadcasting that information. Even if your profile is set to ‘private’, that information is in the online stratosphere and it can almost never be permanently removed.

For example, while I was working in the Illawarra in NSW, a radio announcer made a comment on his personal, private, Facebook page about a local retailer being a ‘crook’.

The post was probably only up for a few minutes before he thought better of it and deleted it, but it was too late. Someone on his ‘friends list’ took a screen shot of the offending post and sent it to the man the post was about.

Member InsightThe Queensland Dog World

www.dogsqueensland.org.au May 2016 - 33

It went to the lawyers and avoided going to court through alternative dispute resolution, but the announcer who made a stupid post for a few minutes did have to face the music.

As part of the settlement, he had to post on his Facebook page every day for a month something along the lines “(The retailer) Is an honest man who has built a fantastic, successful business and I have a big mouth.”

It’s a funny anecdote now, you can just imagine the ego deflation of a radio announcer in his early twenties, but keep in mind that libel and defamation of character are real and he could easily have been sued and paid far more than just a bit of embarrassment.

This is a quote straight out of my Torts Law textbook (aka the book that teaches lawyers who can be sued) “To prove an action in defamation, the plaintiff must establish: defamatory matter; refers to the plaintiff, and; publication.” So, if you damage someone’s reputation, name them and publish it (social media counts!), there really can be both criminal and civil law repercussions.

Now, that is at the very extreme end of the scale, I think we’re all fairly aware of where to draw that line. As far as I’m concerned though, thinking carefully about what you post on social media isn’t about toeing the line of not being sued, it’s about being a positive presence in both your real life, and online.

We’ve all seen people getting onto online forums and attacking another person or Club. Just post about feeding your dog some dry biscuits and the ‘raw only’ crusaders will descend.

I will always stand behind having strong opinions, I have made a living from having my own. It is time though to double check where having your own opinion ends and bullying another person begins.

“Social media has affected the dog world so positively in so many ways.

I love getting the results fast, but also being able to access breed entry numbers and schedules online. I also

am an online entries convert – if I have to fill in paper entries these days, I

usually don’t bother entering (sorry!).”

Opinions: great.

Bullying: despicable.

Sometimes in the heat of the moment, we can get carried away and write things in comments sections online that you would never say in real life. As hard as it is, it’s becoming more important than ever to disengage from that kind of negativity. Here’s how I navigate social media:

• If someone posts something offensive or defamatory, report it to the website

• Don’t post while you’re angry• If you wouldn’t say something to someone in person, it doesn’t

belong online either• Make your contributions to social media positive, a proper

reflection of who you are• If there is a ridiculous post that makes you angry (teacup

Chihuahuas for sale are my kryptonite), ignore it. It’s not worth your emotional energy

Dogs Queensland has released its own social media policy and guidelines that came into effect from the 1st of April this year and it’s worth having a look at those. The main points of it are (and yes I am paraphrasing):

• Be nice to others and their dogs• Don’t get on and have a fat whinge about Judges, Clubs or Dogs

Queensland – there are official avenues for that sort of thing• Don’t swear your head off

It’s pretty simple stuff really, we are all better than that.

I love social media. I love being able to stay in touch, get information fast and share experiences and photos with the world. But it can cause a lot of unnecessary heartache when used inappropriately.

So on social media, as in life, make your presence a positive one. Lead by example. If you think that posting online is anonymous, that it doesn’t have repercussions, think again. We have been given an amazing tool, let’s use it to our absolute best advantage.

Until next month my friends.

Xx Ash

PS - You can follow me on Instagram @Ashlynmelita, I post stacks of dog and baby photos. I’m also on Twitter, Facebook and Youtube, though not as voraciously.

Mr David Smith

Originally from the UK, I purchased my first Borzoi in 1984 with my ex-partner. Two years later we added Chihuahuas. My first registered prefix was Rican ova, based in the UK. I moved to Australia in 2005 and 1 have been associated with Borzoi,

Whippets and Lowchen. I am qualified to judge Toys, Gun dogs, Hounds and Non-Sporting. I have judged extensively in Australia, including specialties in Chihuahuas,

Papillons, Chinese Crested, Afghan hounds, Basenji and English Springer Spaniels. My judging has taken me overseas, including Europe and New Zealand. In recent

times I have been invited back to the UK to judge both Borzoi and Chihuahua specialties.

Mr Warren Greasley

My involvement with purebred dogs commenced in 1985 with the purchase of our first Australian Cattle Dog. Under the ‘Nerralee’ prefix, my wife and I have

campaigned 19 of our ACD’s to Australian Champion titles and 1 to a Supreme Champion title. We have had 4 Best in Show breed specialty winners and 3 Best Of Breed Melbourne Royal winners. I currently hold licences for the Gundog, Working,

Utility, and Non Sporting groups. I would like to thank the LKAQ for its very kind invitation to judge at this year’s Championship shows.

Mr Lynn Butler

The Butlers have bred German Shorthaired Pointers under the KAZIA prefix in 1970. Their tally of home-bred German Shorthaired Pointer Champions stands at 76, with

10 Best in Show All Breeds, including 35 individual Best Exhibit in Group winners who have amassed over 100 Best in Group wins. Mr Butler began judging in 1981

with the Gundog Group and achieved International All Breeds status in 1999. Apart from wide experience throughout all Australian States and New Zealand, he has had

the pleasure of judging in Ireland, UK (Gundog Soc. of Wales and GSP Specialty), Hong Kong, the Philippines and a GSP Specialty in USA.

Mrs Carolyn Butler

Mrs Butler’s judging career started in 1985 with Gundogs, and in 2005 she became an All Breeds Judge. She has judged a great many times in most parts of Australia

and New Zealand, as well as Ireland, Wales, the Philippines and Hong Kong. Carolyn is also an approved Junior Showmanship Judge, an activity she much enjoys.

Mrs Susan Shrigley

Mrs Shrigley took ownership of her first Weimaraner way back in the early 1970s. In the early 1980’s she also became involved with Smooth Fox Terriers winning Best

In Show at Sydney Royal in 1986. Mrs Shrigley has bred in excess of 100 Champion Weimaraners under the prefix Ghostwind and has judged in many countries

throughout the world.

Mrs Sue Bownds

Mrs Bownds started showing for her grandparents when she was five. They showed fox terriers, Scottish terriers, beagles, cocker spaniels, curly coated retrievers and Irish

water spaniels. Her great grandparents were both judges and emigrated from the UK to New Zealand before settling in Australia. Her parents then started showing and after some debate chose the beagle. Over 50 years later. Sue is still showing

and breeding beagles under the well known ‘Nangunyah’ prefix. She has bred over 100 champions in Australia and overseas. In 2014 Sue became an All Breeds judge. She has judged in all states and territories of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa,

Phillipines, Poland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany and the UK.

Mr John Hutchison

John first became interested in dogs when as a young boy his father introduced him to Greyhounds. He fell in love with the breed and went on to own, breed, and train racing greyhounds, and still holds a Greyhound training license to this day.

John began his judging career in 1985 with the Toy Group, and gained his Toy Championship license in 1987, then went on to gain his Hound license 3 years later.

Over the years John and his wife Wendy, under their MONJOIE Prefix, have imported 17 Bichons, have bred or shown multiple Supreme Champions, Grand Champions

and close to 100 Australian Champions. Monjoie Bichons have won multiple Best in Show awards at both All Breeds Championship Shows and Breed Specially Shows,

have exported dogs around the world that have won Best in Show and won Best of Breed at the prestigious World Dog Show.
