TABLE OF CONTENTS

The Editorial Board wishes good health to all our neighbors, friends, and employees.

On behalf of the entire community, we extend our sympathies to those who lost loved ones.

I’ve heard that we are all in the same boat, but it’s not like that. We are in the same storm, but not in the same boat. Your ship could be shipwrecked and mine might not be. Or vice versa.

For some, quarantine is optimal. A moment of reflection, of re-connection, easy in flip flops, with a cocktail or coffee. For others, this is a desperate financial & family crisis.

For some that live alone they’re facing endless loneliness. While for others it is peace, rest & time with their mother, father, sons & daughters.

With the $600 weekly increase in unemployment some are bringing in more money to their households than when they were working. Others are working more hours for less money due to pay cuts or loss in sales.

Some families of four just received $3400 from the stimulus while other families of four saw $0.

Some were concerned about getting a certain candy for Easter while others were concerned if there would be enough bread, milk and eggs for the weekend.

Some want to go back to work because they don’t qualify for unemployment and are running out of money. Others want to kill those who break the quarantine.

Some are home spending 2-3 hours/day helping their child with online schooling while others are spending 2-3 hours/day to educate their children on top of a 10-12 hour workday.

Some have experienced the near death of the virus, some have already lost someone from it and some are not sure if their loved ones are going to make it. Others don’t believe this is a big deal.

Some have faith in God and expect miracles during this 2020. Others say the worst is yet to come.

So, friends, we are not in the same boat. We are going through a time when our perceptions and needs are completely different.

Each of us will emerge, in our own way, from this storm. It is very important to see beyond what is seen at first glance. Not just looking, actually seeing.

We are all on different ships during this storm experiencing a very different journey.

From the Board of DirectorsSince this is being submitted on Mother’s Day, A belated Happy

Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mothers in Canal Walk. CAUTION

While we have all been very confined, people walking on any street, especially Canal Walk Boulevard, should always walk facing traffic. That is required so you can be alert to any danger. We see people who are listening to music or on phones and not paying attention. In addition, there are about 1800 cars in Canal Walk. Please slow down.

CLUBHOUSE OPENINGNew Jersey is one of the very worst states in the country with the

virus. Because we are a community with a high-risk population, we are going to be extra cautious. It is highly likely the clubhouse will be closed for an extended period. We will advise as soon as any further decisions are made.BOARD RESOLUTIONS (26)

This month the article is brief because we want to present the list of Board Resolutions that we would have approved in April at the Board meeting.

Community Development

From the Enclave BoardSOCIAL DISTANCING CONTINUES

Social distancing continues to be the norm in the Enclave as in the rest of the community.

We would like to remind residents that a minimum distance of six feet between people is requested, and facemasks should be worn when people are nearby.

REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCERepairs and maintenance continue, in particular those that don’t

impact residents directly. We have tested repairs to balconies, power washed garage floors, and continued lawn maintenance and landscaping. These external activities will continue with inside work ready to be performed once the social restrictions are relaxed or lifted.

FLAG DAYFlag Day is on June 14. Flag Day commemorates adoption of the

U.S. flag on June 14, 1777, which has stood as a symbol for our nation for almost 250 years. When deemed safe, we look forward to attending events in our Clubhouse and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The words of our pledge have never been more meaningful than during these difficult times.

The Enclave Board of DirectorsBen Caudo, John LoPresti, Bruce Schulman,

Steve Selvaggio, Andy Tendler

Community Updates Members of the Board Advisory Panel who are in the

Communications Improvement Group have recommended to the Board that we remind homeowners that timely communications are available in Community Updates.

Community Updates are emailed to homeowners to supplement the information that is contained in the Newsletter. The Updates are typically used to quickly disseminate time-sensitive information since they do not have the three to four week lag time that Newsletter articles have. Topics in the past have included updates related to the impact of coronavirus on the operation of our clubhouses and activities, Comcast cable TV, community trips and events, show tickets, security/safety information, gate closures and the status of community improvements and repairs.

If you are not receiving Community Updates via email, contact Cathy Vaccaro ([email protected]) in the Management Office and ask to be added to the distribution list.

Board of Directors

Canal Walk Reservation PolicyFor activities sponsored by the Committees and the Activity Director • Sign-ups/Reservations are required for all events and each event

is first come, first served. • A reservation is only confirmed when the Event Flyer is

completed, date stamped and payment in full is received (Checks Payable to C.W.H.O.A.A.F). Cash is not accepted.

• Reservations are always restricted to Canal Walk residents for a period of time. This period may vary depending on the event and lead time.

• Each Residence (not resident) is entitled to make a reservation for two people, one of whom may be a guest.

• After the exclusive several week period for residents, the event will be open to guests.

• When events are sold out, a reasonable waiting list will usually be maintained for those who have paid in full. From time to time, an additional trip for an event may be arranged at a later date.

• All residents are encouraged to check the Lobby carousels and the Website regularly.

Canal Walk Refund Policy • Effective March 1, 2019, the following is a revision to the

Refund Policy for any and all tickets, trips or reservations made for events arranged by the Clubhouse Activities, Cultural Arts and Trips and Travel Committees and the Activity Director.

• Once you register and pay for any event or trip, you have the absolute right to admission for that event. There will be no refunds for any reason. The only exception is if there is a wait list which the office may maintain. It is your responsibility to contact the office if you would like them to help you resell your tickets, and to inform the office if you have already sold your place/ticket to another person. This policy is to properly manage our finances and is consistent with almost all performance venues.

• If you cannot use the reservation, you may sell your ticket or right to admission, or give it to someone else. The office should be advised of any changes to the reservation so that we can account for everyone attending.

A Thank YouFor some individuals with cognitive challenges, these sudden

changes are very difficult to understand. Through the generosity and spirit of volunteerism of a group of our neighbors, residents in group homes for individuals with intellectual disabilities operated by The Arc of Union County received colorful protective face masks. Not only did these handmade colorful masks provide an uplifting moment for The Arc residents but showed them they are special. No more white masks. They had their own special, colorful design. The masks were made from donated materials from our community and our neighbors energetically produced masks not only for The Arc, but hospitals and individuals living in our community. The spirit was impressive and the action filled a big need.

These are difficult times, but when a group of thoughtful individuals join together to help individuals they do not know, we know that this type of human spirit will get us through to better times.

On behalf of all the residents served by The Arc of Union County, their families and our employees who support our residents, thank you. This group of Canal Walk neighbors truly made a difference in our lives.

An Email Google Group Has Been Established

This is an email discussion group whereby we can share information, using our own group email address. Currently, more than 800 residents are participating in the group. It has proved to be an efficient method for sharing information pertinent to the community. While having a Gmail email account is suggested, but not required, it does allow group members to view and search past postings. The purpose of this group is:

• To share and receive references or information about vendors, e.g., “I’m looking for someone to fix...;” “Does anyone know of a good dentist, dressmaker, plumber, etc.”

• To sell, purchase, or borrow items, e.g. “I have a ticket for.... and would like to sell it;” “Can anyone lend me a baby car seat for the weekend, etc.”

• To discuss common issues with our personal property in order to seek other’s opinions and share possible solutions.

The Group is: • NOT a public group (It is for Canal Walk residents only) • NOT for commercial or political purposes • NOT to be used as a soap box or a vehicle to “vent” about the

Board, the HOA, or the builder. If you are not yet a member and would like to join the Canal Walk

Google Group, send an email requesting membership to: [email protected]

Sunday CinemaI’m hoping by the time you read this in June (written end of April

for the publishing deadline), the Covid-19 health nightmare is a very bad memory and you are all safe and well.

Our country is faced with a health crisis that has turned our lives upside down. We have lost, and mourn, neighbors to this frightening period.

In addition, many have the extra burden of being newly unemployed and through no fault of their own, find they struggle to feed their family. Sunday Cinema movie lovers understand and support providing for those in need. Within 7 days after receiving an email asking for help, the movie lovers contributed $1,367.73 to the Franklin Food Bank (a non-profit 501c (3) organization.) Heartfelt thanks to our compassionate residents who understand that it does take a village to help heal the world ... and that village is Canal Walk.WHAT TO WATCH

As we spend more time at home, there are lots of great movies to watch via streaming/dvd with your loved ones - human and/or furry. Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, offer a wonderful variety of top NY Times Best 50 Movies. Here are some suggestions.

THREE TIMESAn anthology of three Taiwanese love stories, told in three different

periods (1911, 1966 and 2005), featuring the same two actors. Each segment is about 45 minutes - long enough to make a strong impression and short enough to offer a distilled vision that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Enjoy the 1966 segment that plays out under the dreamy Platters’ ballad “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” (Amazon)

THERE WILL BE BLOODA misanthropic early 20th-century California oil tycoon deals with

rivals and opponents while building one small town into the seat of his empire. Watch Oscar winner

Daniel Day-Lewis create one of the most memorable characters in a modern epic. After watching this film, why not check out Day-Lewis in The Last of the Mohicans? It’s a classic. (Netflix)

MUNICHAfter a Palestinian terror organization kills the Israeli team at the

1972 Munich Olympics, a group of Israeli agents are enlisted to secretly hunt down and kill those responsible. If you want a thoughtful thriller about terror and revenge, this is one by director Steven Spielberg’s in a most politically complex film. (Amazon)

SEVEN DAYS IN MAYA U.S. President (Fredric March) hopes to bring an end to the Cold

War by signing a nuclear disarmament treaty with the Soviets, much to the displeasure of the hawkish General (Burt Lancaster). An Aide (Kirk Douglas) stumbles on shattering evidence that the General is plotting a coup to overthrow the President in seven days. Suspense follows in a dangerous race to thwart the takeover.

Thanks to Vince & Maryann Renzulli for suggesting this movie.(Netflix and Amazon)

WHAT’S UP DOC?(Not a 50 Best but one of my all- time laugh out loud movies.)This 1972 American romantic screwball comedy starring Barbra

Streisand, Ryan O’Neal, and the fabulous Madeline Kahn, is intended to pay homage to comedy films of the 1930s. Be prepared for laughs as Barbra and Ryan, aboard a grocery delivery wagon inside a Chinese dragon, are being chased downhill by three cars, in this madcap adventure. (Netflix, Amazon, Hulu)

Do you have suggestions for great films to watch as we weather this crisis and come out stronger? Marion Yudow proposed this clever idea: to get your ‘fix’ of discussing a movie: watch a recommended film and then join a ‘Zoom/Facetime’ group to discuss.

Please contact me ([email protected] or 732-356-0023) with your film recommendations so other movie aficionados can enjoy them. So until we are together again on a Sunday afternoon in the Clubhouse, please all be safe and well.

The Guard at the GateI know plenty of people have stuff to complain about, but sometimes

there are little things in our life that make us smile, and make the day a bit brighter as we go through our not getting out much.

There is a guard at the gate who brightens my day every time he is on duty. I do not know his name, but he was on duty both yesterday and today early in the morning. Both days I was coming in the gate around 7, and there he was with a big smile and a wave. He has done this in the past, at least every time that I went through the gate when he was on duty.

Here’s the crazy part, I look for him when I go through the gate and am disappointed when he is not on duty. When he is on duty his smile and wave make my day. In some cases it changed my whole attitude during the day.

If you can, please pass on my thanks for that smile and wave, I know we cannot get out and shake hands right now, but I would if I could.

I hope others have experienced a simple thing like a smile and a wave that makes their day a “Lyttle” (sorry, I couldn’t resist this) bit better.

CW Car TalkNow’s the time. Tell us what’s in your garage. Did you build it?

Did you customize it?. Is it stock under the hood? Is it a trailer queen or do you drive it in the rain? Lastly, how many Corvettes are there in Canal Walk and is one of them a split window 63?

Maybe we can have our own Friday night car show in the club house parking lot?

Here we are again, one month later, still living in difficult times, coping with the pandemic and the new reality. We are challenged to follow guidelines that will keep us safe, healthy and protected from the virus. The warmer spring weather encourages us to go out and enjoy nature. But when we are confined indoors, we strive to use the time productively.

Learning a foreign language can stimulate the mind as well as develop a skill. If you are working on your Spanish, you may have tried “Duo Lingo” or “Rosetta Stone” online. These programs allow you to work at your own pace. You learned new words and expressions which can give you the satisfaction of communicating in another language. You also exercised your brain for cognitive benefits.

NETFLIX provides another good source of exposure for comprehension and entertainment. There are several Spanish speaking films that are worth watching, such as the award-winning film ROMA.

The Spanish channels are great for the News or the Telenovelas (soap operas) which are very dramatic.

Hopefully, these sad times will end soon. Have faith, be inspired, positive and optimistic. Check out some useful expressions that are relevant to the current situation.

Estamos todos en el mismo barco. (We are all in the same boat).

Que Dios nos bendiga y nos proteja. (May God bless and protect us).

Todo pasa! Esto Tambien pasara! (Everything passes! This too shall pass!)

Tengan fe, esperanza, y confianza. (Have faith, hope and trust).

Juntos, con la ayuda de Dios, venceremos. (Together, with God’s help we will overcome).

Paz y bendiciones para todos. (Peace and blessings for all).

Young At HeartWell, here we are, experiencing something we certainly never

planned on.The Young at Heart Club did have a very full calendar and now we

look at many blank days.Jule and I and our entire Board hope you and your families are doing

well. We miss all of you and we certainly will have plans for our group when it is deemed safe and we can begin to pick up our lives again.

There are so many things to be learned from this experience. Talking to a family member becomes extra special. Checking in on friends keeps us close. We become a little more relaxed in some ways because we are not always on the run. It is the perfect time to perhaps feed a passion you have neglected, that special book you want to read or maybe a movie you want to see again. Exploring us, what is important to me and what am I doing because I think I have to. Quiet time can be very rewarding.

I will tell you one of the things I have done to keep me thinking is writing a little Lesson of the Day for my family, kids, sister, grandchildren etc. I will not bore you with all of my writings but I will share some of Day 1.LESSON FOR THE DAY - ALPHABET

I want you all to go to your Liquor Cabinet (I would prefer you not have one, but who am I to talk) Take each bottle and wash the bottle down with a Lysol Wipe.

This is the important Part - Put each bottle back in alphabetical order.LESSON FOR ANOTHER DAY - ALPHABET

Today we go to our Spice Cabinet. You know the drill - take each little jar or tin and wipe it down. The trick here is to find the expiration date. You must and I mean must, discard anything over 10 years. I found some things we bought in the PX when Michael was in the service.

I know you are all concerned about our Spiritual Health. It is well taken care of. Each Sunday I put on a fresh pair of pajamas and attend Service.

It does seem strange to say an Act of Contrition when you have nowhere to go to sin.

I hope you all see that a Pandemic can bring out the worst in you or the best. In my case, I haven’t quite decided what it has done for me.

Jule and I, and the Board, miss you all, and realize how lucky we are to be where we are right now.

Acting UpCALENDAR: First Tuesday, 7:30 PM – Freedom Clubhouse

Acting UP-- where characters are welcome. Canal Walk residents gather the first Tuesday of each month to read short scripts from plays, radio/TV shows and melodramas. We have a few laughs and contemplate the wonders of the amateur acting world. No previous stage experience is needed to join, just an open mind and a wish to have fun. In fact, most of us have never been on a formal performance stage before joining Acting UP but have overcome great fears to entertain our Canal Walk neighbors. Join us in Freedom Clubhouse the first Tuesday of each month @ 7:30 PM.

HadassahJUNE, 2020

CALENDAR • July 14, 2020 – 6:00 PM Our summer pizza party will be held

whether in the Clubhouse, as usual, or virtually in our homes. • August 11, 2020 – 12 noon. If you have missed your games as

much as I have, our plan is to hold our luncheon/card party again in the Clubhouse.

• Save the date for fall theater parties. George Street Playhouse hopes to present the recently cancelled ”A Walk on the Moon”. October 7 and November 28 are proposed dates. Watch for more information.

In spite of the necessity of canceling planned trips and events, our Board has met on Zoom to determine the direction of the chapter in the near future. We keep in touch by print, both a Highlight flyer and our bulletin which is full of information about the work of Hadassah. We emphasize that the work of our hospitals must go on in the face of a world-wide pandemic.

Hadassah has launched a clinical trial to evaluate the use of antibodies from recovered COVID-19 patients. They begin by gathering blood samples from recovered patients and measuring the antibody levels in their blood. The plan is to create plasma infusions from those with the highest levels of antibodies and give them to the most acutely ill COVID-19 patients. Research by one of Israel’s top tech stars working with Diagnostic Robotics has resulted in developing a cutting –edge questionnaire that is tracking the spread of the virus with uncanny precision. This tracking directs patients to the most relevant medical setting for them.. These systems are available for anyone in the world who needs help.

The Hadassah website offers podcasts thru your internet browser. Click on a podcast that interests you. http:/www.hadassah.org/multi-media/podcasts/podcasts.html

ShopRite certificates for $25, $50 and $100 are available from Janet Kliger and Evelyn Lasky. The certificates can be used at any time and at any Shop-Rite. It is a “no cost to you” way to raise money for our many medical and educational projects.

We generally meet on the Second Tuesday evening of the month in the Canal Walk Clubhouse. We enjoy theater parties, trips to places of interest in the area, a book club and a Tradition enhancing film activity. Join us. Membership chairwomen are Marlene Glickman and Fran Musler. Best wishes for good health to you and your families.

Miss you all, Edna Stone, Communications Committee

Our scheduled June 26th meeting that was to feature Fred Miller, Lecturer-In-Song, has been postponed. Hopefully, we will be able to reschedule this program in the not too distant future. Best wishes to all our neighbors here in Canal Walk for good health and a good summer.

Itch’n’ To StitchEvery Thursday in the Craft Room from 1 to 3

I HAVE LEARNED:1. If I stay in bed past 8 a.m. the world doesn’t end.2. Clocks and calendars are meaningless. To know what day it is I

look at my pillbox.3. New words added to my vocabulary are pandemic, mitigation,

social distancing, quarantine, and coronavirus.4. I have perfected the art of procrastination. I leave things undone

so I will have something to do tomorrow. Not everything has to be ASAP.

5. A chat with my neighbor across the yard is more enjoyable than a meeting in the Clubhouse with 50 people.

6. The trip to the mailbox sometimes became the highlight of the day.7. A phone call to or from someone I haven’t talked to in a long time

becomes precious.8. Every day is special.9. Flowers from my grandson for no other reason than, “I miss you,”

is like Christmas, Mother’s Day and my birthday rolled up in one.10. Receiving handmade masks from friends at my front door is better

than a trip to a Broadway show.11. Appreciate the sounds of quiet – no traffic or overhead planes.12. Don’t take anything for granted – your family, your friends, your

As you can see from above, we have cancelled all of our formally scheduled activities due to the Covid-19 virus. We hope when September rolls around we will be able to meet again! So below I have attached one of my “Tidbits of Irish History” for you to read.

A CUP OF IRISH TEA“It’s hard to overestimate the importance of tea in Irish culture.

Tea is simultaneously a beverage, a medicine, and a social ritual. The Irish drink on average four cups of tea a day, amounting to 7 pounds of dried tea leaves over the course of a year – easily the highest rate of per-capita tea consumption in the world. No respectable household would be found without tea, and pubs are legally required to provide it. At breakfast, lunch, and teatime (approximately 4 p.m.), tea is the beverage of choice.

The Anglo-Irish aristocracy introduced tea to Ireland in the nineteenth century. As an import from India, it was too expensive for most Irish people at first, but lower prices and generally improving economic conditions allowed more and more people to try this new taste sensation. Soon the whole nation was hooked. (They pronounced the name of their new drink “tay,” from the French pronunciation.)

A cup of tea is often referred to as a “cuppa” – everyone knows what kind of cup you’re talking about. People throughout the country take a break in the midafternoon to enjoy a cup of tea and some light snacks such as cookies or finger sandwiches. The Irish drink tea with sugar and generous amounts of milk. Tea devotees extol the drink’s powers to aid digestion, cure headaches, and provide a gentle pick-me-up.

Irish breakfast tea, available from tea purveyors everywhere, is a blend of black teas from the Assam region of India. It contains dark brown leaves that brew a hearty, malty, deep red tea that takes milk and sugar very well – perfect for breakfast.”

PickleballDear Pickleball Players,I hope this month’s Newsletter finds you all healthy and also very

well rested. Who would have thought that in our golden years, having been through all sorts of life’s obstacles, we would also be living through a pandemic? Life has been challenging, frustrating and also very scary. For many of us it has been terrible not to be with our friends and visit our beloved families, and for some not being able to eat out has proven to be an enormous sacrifice. My daughter has become obsessed with cleaning her house and when she told me she scrubbed the baseboard moldings in her entire house and kick plates under her kitchen cabinets and was running out of things to clean I became very concerned for her mental well-being (LOL!). But for most of you who are reading this, it has been just plain awful not playing pickleball (although I hope by the time this newsletter reaches your mailboxes we will be once again playing on our courts). The Pickleball Steering Committee started meeting in April to establish a plan for safe play and what measures would have to be taken in order to play with the least amount of risk when the courts re-open. The proposed plan was presented to the CW Board mid-May for review, approval, implementation and enforcement. All new safety rules approved by the Board will be posted by the pickleball courts and circulated to all residents. We all want to play pickleball but we need to play safe and minimize any risk of transmission of COVID-19.

Tip of the Month – STAY IN SHAPE. Frequent walks to the pantry or refrigerator for snacks do not count! There are hundreds of YouTube exercise videos for all levels that you can do in the comfort of your homes. If you haven’t already, now is the time to start a daily regimen of exercise. What else are you doing? Try different ones until you find one you like. There are dance videos, aerobic videos, and walking videos to name a few. Do you have an exercise bike? Dust it off and take a ride – there are videos to watch that make you feel you are out on a bicycle path or a coastal road by a beautiful ocean. Not a biker? Just taking a long walk outside on a nice day is great for your mind and body. Suggestion for a pickleball drill – remember when you were young and played with a wood paddle with a small rubber ball on an elastic string attached to the paddle and you would count how many times you could hit the ball with the paddle? Try bouncing a pickleball on your paddle for as long as you can, standing in place and keeping your eyes on the ball - small bounces are fine and keep track of the number of times you hit the ball with the paddle before the ball drops to the floor.

So my friends, I am convinced that when this is over and it will one day be over, we will come out stronger, more resilient, kinder and certainly not take anything for granted.

Best regards and stay safe, Leslie, 201-841-6594

Canal Walk Women’s Bible StudyThere is a verse in the Bible that says, “Encourage one another

and build each other up as you are already doing.” I felt this was a most appropriate verse during this time of possible feelings of anxiety, loneliness, and uncertainty.

A man in the Bible named Barnabas was known for his kindness and for his ability to encourage others. Today, as citizens of a difficult world, perhaps we can become a “Barnabas” to others. We can do that by offering “virtual hugs” and kind words to our loved ones. We can do that when our actions give credence to our beliefs. We can do that when we are generous with our possessions and with our praise. We can do that when we give hope to the hopeless and encouragement to the downtrodden.

Here in Canal Walk, we can make an impact on our community – one virtual hug at a time. When this article is written, it is uncertain when we will go back to meeting weekly in the Club House for Bible study. Meanwhile, we have been meeting weekly via Zoom to encourage each other. You are welcome to join us by contacting Gail or Susan at 908-625-0526 or [email protected]; or at 732-412-7223 or [email protected]. An author, Florence Littauer, writes, “Giving encouragement to others is a most welcome gift, for the results of it are lifted spirits, increased self-worth, and a hopeful future.” We wish that for all of you!

Gail Tornquist

Talk of the WalkWe accept short entries regarding significant/unusual

accomplishments, milestones anniversaries and birthdays, births, deaths and acknowledgements. Because most of us have children and grandchildren who make us proud of their accomplishments, we will only include submissions about them that are extremely significant or unusual.

• Marilyn Goldberg passed away on April 23 after a long illness. Previously, she had lived on Independence Court for many years. My family and I want to thank the community for the many kind expressions of sympathy and caring.

Thank you, Jerry Goldberg

• Justin Marrazza, grandson of Gloria Marrazza Sipos, has graduated from Penn State University with honors.

• Anna May Wall of Saratoga Court is so very proud of her granddaughter Lexi. Facing a tough decision between the University of South Carolina, Clemson, Alabama, Auburn and Rutgers; Lexi committed to PURDUE University. She will major in Biomedical Engineering.

Home Hints With all credit to Sid Toby who was head of the newsletter

committee, and who wrote this column for many years, here’s a hint that’s helpful today. These are his words from March 2005. I tried this and it works.

“I have found the sink faucets in our house to be of good quality. In the more than 20 months that we’ve lived here the only servicing needed was to a kitchen faucet arm that had become stiff and hard to swivel. This happens when the O-rings start to dry out. I solved the problem by pulling upward on the vertical portion of the swivel assembly and spraying some silicone spray at the bottom of the assembly. Then push downwards spraying at the top. Move the faucet arm from side to side until it feels freer. Finally wipe off excess silicone spray from the vertical stem. Do not use WD40 or similar lubricants on O-rings.”

Rebecca is certified by the National Association of Social Workers as an Advanced Social Worker in Gerontology. Aging-in-place involves being able to remain in the home of your choice, even as your needs may change. However, the decision to stay in your home requires advanced planning and not all seniors have a plan in place. You will learn about factors to be considered when formulating an aging-in-place plan, including home modifications, assistive technology, health care services, community resources, financial concerns and legal preparations. With the impact of Covid-19 on assisted living and long-term care facilities, the timing of this presentation is perfect. NOTE: This program will be Virtual via Zoom unless we get the all clear to meet in the Ballroom. Registration information will be sent via email mid-May.

The First Tee is a youth development organization impacting the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy habits through the game of golf with the focus on serving minority and underprivileged youth.

Our Somerset Run golf friends asked whether Canal Walk would be interested in collaborating and donating golf clubs and bags to the program. The response from both communities has been outstanding. To-date, a total of 426 clubs and 18 bags have been donated. It is a great

cause in support of young people—glad we were given the opportunity to partner with Somerset Run.

For those returning snow birds, contact Ron to arrange to collect your extra golf stuff. Ron Lerner, 732-302-0088

FRANKLIN FOOD BANK:The Food Bank is in dire need of funds to help feed the many

families in town impacted by the pandemic and unemployment. Many of the Canal Walk Clubs stepped up last month by collecting money and food. The Men’s Club donated $1000. If you responded to our recent email outreach campaign, thank you. We urge you to consider redirecting your unused restaurant monies to the Franklin Foodbank. You can donate on-line by going to: https://franklinfoodbank.org/

As part of the Men’s Club Annual BBQ, the Men’s Club will be conducting its Semi-Annual Food Drive on July 13 to benefit the Franklin Food Bank. A Food Bank van will be in the Canal Walk parking lot to take your donations starting at 5 PM. Please plan to drop-off your nonperishable goods. Cash donations are always welcome. Make checks payable to Franklin Food Bank. (If the Clubhouse is open, you may leave your cash or checks in the Men’s Club mailbox located in the Clubhouse office.)

Well, as this column is being written we are still in quarantine mode, banned from most public venues. Even though we are being told that we will soon “open up” our society, I entertain doubts that, by June, people will be flocking to theaters to see plays or movies. Accordingly, I will again devote this writing to exploring ways to entertain ourselves at home.

As I reported last month, the Met Opera is still free streaming an opera a day and has announced the policy will continue “during the coronavirus crisis.” Here’s how to get the free operas for TV viewing, each of which will be available for viewing for 20 hours after its 7:30 scheduled time:

“The streams are also available through the Met Opera on Demand apps for Apple, Amazon, and Roku devices and Samsung Smart TV. To access them without logging in, click ‘Browse and Preview’ in the apps for connected TV, and ‘Explore the App’ on tablets and mobile devices.

The streamed performances are also available for playback on cellphones, tablets and computers. For those who are willing to pay to have opera streamed, you can subscribe to the Met streaming program for $14.99 a month. That fee will give you access to some 600 recorded opera performances, many in HD. that you can enjoy in your home.

These include the Rosetta stone, the Elgin Marbles from the Athens Parthenon, and original manuscripts of Shakespeare.

As for those of you who have HBO and Showtime, you can easily provide yourselves with the current listings provided through your remote controls. But don’t overlook the many goodies not currently listed but available if you direct your remote to to the on demand mode for both of these cable services. There you will find films and series which have played in the past but are not currently scheduled that you may have missed or would like to see again. On demand is an excellent

way to catch up with series you avoid because you didn’t tune in from their beginnings.

Netflix seems to add a new series or film every other day but it also makes available ones ago which you may never have encountered. I remember, for example a Spanish television series my wife and I found hypnotic, entitled Grand Hotel and was delighted to see it’s still available. It takes place in a resort hotel in Spain in the 20’s when electric lighting was just introduced. It’s a combination missing persons mystery, soap opera and a comment on class distinctions all rolled into one. Well worth seeing. A recent documentary series I and I think many of my age may find fascinating is called 5 Came Back. It’s the story of the contributions made to the Second World War effort by five of America’s greatest film directors. They were Frank Capra, John Huston, John Ford, William Wyler and George Stevens. Each served in his own way and each had strong but different personalities. John Huston and John Ford stick out as demanding and difficult to deal with characters. Some actually risked their lives and placed themselves in peril to get some really outstanding combat footage. Others concentrated on producing informative and inspirational films or recreated combat scenes for home audiences.

Many good films are available on Netflix, including their own and studio productions. Among them are two recently reviewed here that were nominated for Best Picture, The Irishman and Roma and another, also nominated, Marriage Story. The latter film records the sad disintegration of a marriage between two good but mismatched people. It features excellent performances by Adam Driver and Scarlett Johannson. One of my favorites is the 2007 film, Zodiac, a movie I believe didn’t receive the acclaim it should have, perhaps because it was released two early before the usual Oscar discussions season. It deals with the Zodiac killings that terrorized the San Francisco area in the 60’s and 70’s, one of the worst unsolved crime sprees in recent history. It is tense and gripping with good performances throughout. Classics like Groundhog Day, the Back to the Future Trilogy, and the haunting Mystic River are also available.

Those of us with Amazon Prime accounts also have access to films and series of high quality. One of my favorite series, Bosch, opened a new season in May. Though I’m not usually a fan of TV cop dramas, this one has a bite, a realism, and a cleverness to it that sets it apart. Another series with bite, based on real life is The Report. a drama about a Senate staffer investigating the conduct of the CIA. The performances by Adam Driver and Annette Benning are first rate. A fascinating documentary series from the BBC, The Story of China presents the history of that culture dating back to the 7th century and is eye opening. Excellent films are also available for free. They include recent Best Picture nominee, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, a Quentin Tarantino movie I actually found I could enjoy, a kind of buddy film about two movie industry characters in 1969, an all but over the hill actor and his stuntmen friend. These roles are well played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. The film has humor, touches on Hollywood history and lacks the sophomoric violence of so many Tarantino films. Excellent older films like the bittersweet Sideways, the classic modern noir film, Chinatown and the delightful Midnight In Paris can also be seen.

If the above services aren’t available to you I would suggest that you research the cable and streaming services that have been offering free trials. Many will provide streaming and cable services for free for trial periods ranging from a week to a month. As long as you notify them by the end of the trial period that you don’t wish to continue you can have many days of free entertainment. Among the companies offering such free trials have been Hulu, HBO, Showtime, Apple TV, Netflix, and Sling.

SHUTTERBUGS MEETINGS:As long as necessary, the Shutterbugs will conduct our meetings and lectures

via the internet so all members can participate from home. The application Zoom has been tested and will allow us to share not only audio and video, but presentations and lectures. The Shutterbugs general meeting in April was held on-line, with about 30 members participating. At the April meeting, David DesRochers gave a presentation on his recent photography expedition to Glacier National Park. He emphasized the photographic challenges and techniques he used during both image capture and post processing. Not only were the images striking, but the back story and technical details were very informative. The Photo Tip of the Month was presented by David Reissman, who spoke about Spring Photography. David talked about what kind of light is best, how to improve the colors, and composition techniques.

MONTHLY CHALLENGE:The Monthly Challenge continued and the results were shared via the internet.

April’s challenge topic was “Signs”. The challenge in this case was to make a photograph of a sign and include relevant surroundings. The Shutterbugs produced 35 images for this challenge. Some representative samples are included, by David Reissman (“Watch Your Head” – a nicely composed visual joke), John Carroll (“No Return Road” – a balanced composition with a logical head-scratcher), and Phil Witt (“House For Sale” – a documentary image with an improbable sign.)

RECENT PHOTOS:Shutterbugs are always sharing photographs with each other via email. Some

very nice examples are included of scenes shot mainly around the Canal Walk region, by Debbie Stuart, Myrta Rivera, David DesRochers, and Anthony Riccio.

PROJECTS:On May 7, Doug Miller was scheduled to present an on-line tutorial about

the smartphone photo editing program Snapseed. This program is installed on a smartphone and is convenient for making quick minor edits to an image.

GETTING PETS SUPPLIES DURING COVID-19Pet owners are encouraged to buy pet food and supplies as they normally would,

without stockpiling so that all pet owners can continue to have reliable access. Pet food manufacturers and distributors are considered life-sustaining businesses and can remain operational but must practice social distancing and review best practices for grocery stores and delivery networks. It’s easy to order pet stuff on line.

www.Walmart.com is a good resource for smart tech like auto feeders, pet cameras, furniture, toys, food, litter, and flea/tick medications. www.Target.com and www.Amazon.com carry a vast array of food and toys for Fido and Fluffy. www.Chewy.com fills vets’ prescriptions, food, and toys, and has auto ship on many items – usually at a discount. www.Petco.com offers food and other pet supplies along with auto ship, and www.Litterbox.com can supply Fluffy with cat accessories, litter, and toys. Suggestion: reach out to other pet parents who may be experiencing Covid-19 hardships and help - as able - through extra ordering, while practicing social distancing. YOU ASKED: ARE PETS FROM A SHELTER SAFE TO ADOPT?

There is no reason to think that any animal, including shelter pets, in the United States might be a source of Covid-19.

Do I need to get my pet tested for Covid-19?No. At this time, routine testing of animals for Covid-19 is not recommended. Can pets get the virus? There is still much that is not known about this new virus, and there have indeed

been a handful of isolated sick pet animal cases, included exotic animals at the Bronx Zoo. Caution is given that if you have the disease; try to limit contact as much as possible with your pet. Wear a facemask when you’re around your animal, and wash your hands before and after you handle them.

Should Fido wear a mask outside? While pictures of dogs wearing masks over their noses have spread on social

media, this is a total waste of money and a total waste of time.Sourced from www.cdc.gov,www.apnews.com and www.marketwatch.com.

YOU DON’T WANT TO LOSE FLUFFY DURING THE CRISIS

Even if you only keep Fluffy indoors, cats are excellent escape artists. In case she makes a break for it, always have a collar on her with her name and your phone number (cell number is preferred because you will be out scouring the neighborhood and someone may find her). You did microchip Fluffy, didn’t you? Compiled from www.pets.webmd.com.

TO PET OR NOT TO PET, THAT IS THE QUESTIONFirst and foremost, practice social distancing. It’s a conundrum

facing dog-loving people everywhere amid all the sanitizing, shutting down and sheltering in to slow the spread of Covid-19. As with so much related to the virus, there’s no simple answer to pet or not to pet, though experts say there is no reason to keep your paws off your own dog if you have no symptoms of sickness.

Things are a bit less clear when it comes to others’ dogs. There is no indication that dogs - or any other pet - can transmit the virus to humans through droplets, according to the World Health Organization. A separate question is whether a dog’s fur or skin could be contaminated by the virus if, for example, its infected owner sneezed on it. After all, a study published Tuesday reported that the virus can live under laboratory conditions for three days on plastic and steel and one day on cardboard. Might it also reside happily on the lush coat of a St. Bernard? Given the unknowns about the disease, experts recommend that people infected with the coronavirus stay away from pets, as they should from people. So the most conservative approach would be to refrain from touching others’ dogs, because its owner could be asymptomatic. But if you must, practice social distancing and make sure the owner is on the other end of a leash at least six feet long. Because other diseases are known to spread between people and animals, the American Veterinary Medical Association recommends that people always wash their hands before and after any dog petting. Compiled from www.washingtonpost.com.

VET CHECKMy 18 year old cat Sarah was due for her annual checkup. Her vet

at the nearby regional animal hospital offered tele med visits instead of bringing her in (would have to stay in the car as a vet tech would take only Sarah in for an exam). I wasn’t comfortable with that option for my frail and notoriously shy best furry friend. The tele med app (Airvet) was easy to use and very reasonable, allowing Sarah’s longtime vet to see her (and me) through my IPhone, and similar to Facetime/Zoom, discuss her care. Of course, if this was an emergency medical situation, this option would not work. But during this crisis, it was a good option until normal visits can resume.

NOW THAT’S RECYLING!A program at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary

Medicine helps animals with heart disease by outfitting them with used human pacemakers. Though the units can last up to 10 years, many people need interim upgrades. Their cardiovascular nurse developed the donation program and noted pacemakers are usually thrown away but studies show that devices for people could be used in dogs. Compiled from AARP THE MAGAZINE and suggested by super animal lover, Marie Koll.

THE FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP ANIMAL SHELTERTHE FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP ANIMAL SHELTER is closed (at

the time this article was written in late April). But you can still donate (and adopt!) to help the animals waiting for their forever homes.

The Shelter is always in need of dry/wet dog/puppy/cat/kitten food, KMR kitten milk replacer, clean and worn towels/blankets/sheets, paper towels/sponges, flea medications, Q-Tips, catnip, laundry detergent/dish soap/bleach, heating pads w/o auto shutoff, pet toys and of course, monetary donations are warmly welcomed.

The outside donation bin is always available. The Animal Shelter is located at the Municipal Complex on Demott Lane (732-873-2500), follow the prompts for the Shelter line). Please contact me for any assistance I can provide during this crisis at (732) 356-0023 or at [email protected].

Please all pet parents, and Fido and Fluffy, stay safe and well.Thank you all for caring and sharing. Judy Gottlieb

Italian American ClubHi All, by the time you read this, it is hoped that restrictions will

have been relaxed enough for us to hold our June meeting. If not, we will anxiously look forward to our July meeting. As you know, we have been unable to hold or host events or plan Jitney trips. Once the restrictions are relaxed or removed, we plan to resume our active schedule. Although schools are closed and probably will not reopen this school year , our Scholarship Committee has been busy with the school counselors, obtaining records and essays for this year’s awards. You are implored to check your emails as this will be the only way to communicate until such time as we can meet in person.

We were pleased to note that rate of new cases of the virus has slowed dramatically. That is really good news for all. It is our sincere hope that all the contributions made to the Franklin Food Bank by our community helped feed many needy families. We also noticed that Italy has gotten the virus under control and is slowly returning to normal. We are sure that our small donation to the Italian Cultural Society Go Fund Me Drive for the town of Bergamo in Italy helped them reach their goal.

So, until we meet again, stay safe, stay well and keep watching for our emails.

Ciao,Mike, Sal , John & Charley

Veterans’ ClubWell, here we are in June. Aside from the beauty of nature in full

bloom and the words of the Oscar & Hammerstein song, “June is Bustin Out All Over,” I wondered what else is recognized in the month of June? Here are only a few examples:

• The Allied invasion in Normandy during WWII in 1944 • Superman Comics is published in 1938 • The Rolling Stones begin their first U.S. tour in 1964 • The first drive-in theater opens in Camden, NJ in 1933 • The Milton Berle Show premiered on NBC in 1948 • The U.S. Army is formed with George Washington as

Commander-in-Chief in 1775 • Bobby Kennedy is assassinated in 1968 • The Statue of Liberty arrives in NYC in 1885 • Sally Ride becomes the first female woman in space in 1983 • The Berlin Airlift begins in 1948 • Donuts are created in 1847 • Donald Duck makes his debut in 1934 • The Battle of Midway in 1942 • Lt. Colonel George Custer and the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of the

Little Big Horn in 1876 • Last but not least, • The song “Happy Birthday to You” was first sung in 1859. • Captain James Lawrence said “Don’t Give Up the Ship” on the

U.S. Chesapeake in 1813. Today, we use the words to “Happy Birthday to You” to wash

our hands to protect ourselves against the Coronavirus. The spirit and determination to battle the enemy, as said by Captain Lawrence, holds true in our fight against the virus. We will succeed!

Father’s DaySince Mother’s Day was a huge success, there came a day when

people began to push for a Father’s Day observance. This turned out to be a long journey and not an easy one.

The first recorded celebration of Father’s Day happened as a result of the Monograph Mining Disaster in December 1907. 361 Men died leaving around 1,000 children fatherless. Grace Golden Clayton appealed to her pastor to honor all those fathers and on July 5th, 1908, a gathering took place at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South to honor those deceased fathers. That church is now known as Central United Methodist Church, in Fairmont, West Virginia.

In Spokane, Washington the YMCA managed to get several clergymen, along with the help of Sonora Smart Dodd, to honor fathers throughout the city. The date was set for June 5th, 1910 but was later changed to June 19th (which was the third Sunday in June).

A gentleman named Harry C. Meek who was a member of the Lions Club International, claimed that he was the one who had the first idea for Father’s Day in 1915. He argued that the third Sunday of June was chosen because it was his birthday. The Lions Club named him as the “Originator of Father’s Day”. Meek continued his efforts to make Father’s Day an official holiday, but it would be many years later when that finally happened.

President Woodrow Wilson wanted to make it official after he visited Spokane, Washington to speak at a Father’s Day celebration. Congress resisted because they felt the day would become too commercialized. Calvin Coolidge stopped short of issuing a national proclamation.

Sonora Smart Dodd persevered and continued to try to make Father’s Day a day of national observance. She worked with the Father’s Day Council, a group of New York Men’s Wear Retailers, for the promotion of the observance. Many Americans resisted the holiday for decades because of these attempts to commercialize the day.

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers on the third Sunday in June. President Richard Nixon signed into law a permanent national holiday in 1972 over 50 years after Mother’s Day came into existence.

Father’s Day is celebrated in many countries throughout the world. In the USA we often celebrate this wonderful holiday, celebrating and honoring our fathers, with a traditional backyard barbeque. This is when dad will receive gifts of summer shirts, golf balls, shaving lotion, books, ties, gift cards etc. etc. but his favorite gift will always be his family surrounding him and appreciating and loving him. I pray that this June we’ll be able to be with our families at the dinner table or backyard picnic table.

H E L L O -- I HAVE QUESTIONS! • Why isn’t the number 11 pronounced onety-one? • If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhea ... does that mean that one out of five enjoys it?

• Why do croutons come in airtight packages? Aren’t they just stale bread to begin with?

• If people from Poland are called Poles, then why aren’t people from Holland called Holes?

• If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled? • Why is a person who plays the piano called a pianist, but a person who drives a race car is not called a racist?

• If it’s true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?

• If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, then doesn’t it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?

• Do Lipton Tea employees take “coffee breaks?” • What hair color do they put on the driver’s licenses of bald men? • I thought about how mothers feed their babies with tiny little spoons and forks, so I wondered, “What do Chinese mothers use?” Toothpicks?

• Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do? Write to them? Why don’t they just put their pictures on the postage stamps, so the mailmen can look for them while they deliver the mail?

• Is it true that you never really learn to swear until you learn to drive? • If a cow laughed, would milk come out of her nose? • What ever happened to Preparations A through G? • Why, Why, Why do we press harder on the remote control when we know the batteries are getting weak?

• Why do banks charge a fee due to insufficient funds, when they already know you’re broke?

• Why is it that when someone tells you that there are one billion stars in the universe you believe them … but if they tell you there’s wet paint, you have to touch it to check?

• Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? • Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but he ducks when you throw a revolver at him?

• Whose cruel idea was it to put an “s” in the word “lisp”? • If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes? • Why is it that, no matter what color bubble bath you use, the bubbles are always white?

• Is there ever a day that mattresses are not on sale? • Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized?

• Why do people run over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it and then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance?

• How do those dead bugs get into the enclosed light fixtures? • Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that’s falling off the table, you always manage to knock something else over?

• Why, in winter, do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat?

• Do you ever wonder why you gave me your e-mail address in the first place?

• And A FAVORITE: The statistics on sanity say that one out of every four persons is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. And if they’re OK..? (Then it’s you!)

Computer Corner June 2020Most of us know how to do face time with a friend or relative.

It’s free, and it’s limited to just two phones on the call. If you want to expand the session to 3 or 4 or even 20 participants, you need to use video conferencing with your computer. There are a number of video conferencing websites and most offer a free introductory period of 15-30 days, after which there is a monthly charge.

However, there are two websites that are offering free conferencing for personal use (non-business). www.zoom.com is the most popular and probably the easiest to use. If there are only 2-3 participants, then the time is unlimited. We had a Passover seder with one daughter in Brick NJ and the other in Seattle WA. It went on for almost 2 hours. However if there are more than 3 participants, Zoom will terminate the session after 90 minutes.

The other website offering free, unlimited use is www.webex.com. The free service is new, probably feeling the competition from Zoom. They claim the service will be free until the coronavirus crisis is over. This site is a bit more complex with many more features, and there is no time limit, regardless of how many participants there are. Rutgers has a contract with Webex and I have been using it for my classes.

You can open an account with these two services, www.zoom.com or www.webex.com,, with just an email address and a password. Call me if you have a problem. Howard Kliger

QUARANTINE THOUGHTS: • Tomorrow is the National Homeschool Tornado Drill. Lock your kids in the basement until you give the all clear. You’re welcome!

• I was so bored I called Jake from State Farm just to talk to someone. He asked me what I was wearing.

• 2019: Stay away from negative people. 2020: Stay away from positive people.

• The world has turned upside down. Old folks are sneaking out of the house, and their kids are yelling at them to stay indoors!

• You think it’s bad now? In 20 years our country will be run by people home-schooled by day drinkers…

• This virus has done what no woman had been able to do…cancel all sports, shut down all bars, and keep men at home.

• Do not call the police on suspicious people in your neighborhood. Those are your neighbors without makeup and hair extensions.

• Since we can’t eat out, now’s the perfect time to eat better, get fit, and stay healthy. We’re quarantined! Who are we trying to impress? We have snacks, we have sweatpants – I say we use them!

• Day 25 at home and the dog is looking at me like, “See? This is why I chew the furniture.”

• Does anyone know if we can take showers yet or should we just keep washing our hands?

• I never thought the comment “I wouldn’t touch him/her with a 6 foot pole,” would become a national policy, but here we are.

• Me: “Alexa what’s the weather this weekend?” Alexa: “It doesn’t matter – you’re not going anywhere.”

• Can everyone please just follow the government’s instructions so we can knock out this corona virus and be done? I feel like a kindergartner who keeps losing more recess time because one or two kids can’t follow directions.

• I swear my fridge just said, “What the hell do you want now?” • When this is over…what meeting do I attend first…Weight Watchers or AA?

• Quarantine has turned us into dogs. We roam the house all day looking for food. We are told “no” if we get too close to strangers. And we get really excited about car rides.

First Thing In The MorningIt’s so comforting to wake up with a warm masculine body in my

bed, snuggled up contently beside me. I can hear the cadence of his deep breathing even before I open my eyes and see his relaxed face with just a hint of a smile illuminating it. He must be in the middle of a happy dream, maybe about the two of us and our life together. His head rests on the pillow, or rather on top of two pillows, which he seems to find more comfortable than just one. He is the last thing I see at night and the first thing that I see in the morning.

He is also the first thing that I feel as he rolls over a bit and brushes up against me. Mmm. I experience a slight tickling sensation as his body grazes my arm. I cannot resist the urge to gently run my fingers through the hair on his chest down to his stomach, lightly, carefully, so as not to wake him from his peaceful slumber. My fingertips are softly pricked as I teasingly caress the stubble just below his chin. I breathe in his musky aroma, nothing than a little soap and water will not wash away, but far sweeter to my senses than the finest French perfume.

We have been together for many years and I think back fondly on the myriad of adventures we have shared. He has always been right there beside me, to calm and comfort in times of stress and sorrow, to rejoice and celebrate in times of joy and elation. He is not just the love of my life but truly my best friend. I never doubt his faithfulness to me.

His eyelids flutter, and then his eyes are open, gazing lovingly into mine. Our intimate relationship has bred a deep understanding of each other and no words are necessary to express our mutual affection. His tongue frolics against my cheek as he gives me a little wake-up kiss. As he stretches and arises, I hear a faint jingling sound from the tags on his collar, one an ID in case he gets lost and the other to show he has had his rabies vaccination. We both get out of bed and I plod into the living room, my beloved canine Christopher prancing along beside me, to say good morning to my early-riser husband.

Hidden In A DrawerMy first authentic antique was a bargain, they were offering it at a loss.Sotheby’s shunned its provenance, cause it was owned by a Mafia boss.

It was a Roccoco masterpiece, a chest of drawers ornate,With a mirror atop its gilded surface, designed in the year 1788.

It was to stand in my gracious foyer, impressing all who entered there. They would ooo and ahh when they glimpsed it, of its history they would not care.

It went well with Carrara marble and the other Italian importsThat graced my space with style and class. It’d be the perfect choice of course

I had it shipped to my penthouse apartment, and uncrated by experts quite seriousWhere when I gazed upon its beauty, frankly I became delirious.

So imagine my chagrin that evening, when I examined it closer and sawSomething odd as I opened and then tried to close... the very bottom drawer.

On closer examination, I discovered something unique. There appeared to be an object jammed in the back, I bent over to take a peek.

I failed to get a good look, so used my hand to perhaps get a holdWhen I came upon something hard as metal and also exceptionally cold.

It scared me all of a sudden, as it dawned on me at last. There’s probably a Colt 45 back in here that Bugsy used in the past.

Or maybe a Smith and Wesson, the Mafia handled it with skillOh my God I thought, what is back here, and did it ever kill?

On second thought maybe it was a knife. I think I touched its handle. My heart did a thump as I reached inside further and imagined a horrible scandal.

What was I thinking when I got sucked in and my pride was on display. How stupid to think this bargain wouldn’t come with additional baggage some way.

At last I got on my hands and my knees with a flashlight nonetheless.I dug and I scratched till something unloosed, and fell in my hands....success.

I pulled it out, gasped, looked down and thought, “What the bloody hell?”In my hands sat a metal tube... that one uses to make a cannoli shell!

It wasn’t a weapon of evil, instead was a heavenly deviceYou wrap round some pastry, fry it and fill it... a dessert that’s more than just nice.

So after the panic subsided, the whole situation a vagaryI put back the drawer and went in search...of an Italian bakery!

Write A Story Using These Three Words - Blue, Spaghetti, Broom

SPAGHETTI AND HER BROOMThere once was a girl named Spaghetti who fell in love with a broom,And she kept her precious treasure in a closet in her room. The broom with its bristles of straw and its stick of navy blue,Could perform amazing magic that only Spaghetti could make it do.It all started one day when her mom asked her to sweep the floor,The broom danced her around the room and then right out the door.Spaghetti followed closely and held the broomstick in her hand,“Where to,” said the broom, “your wish is my command!” As soon as the cool wind hit, the broom took flight,She sat upon the broomstick and held on tight.“Let’s just stay local today and explore my neighborhood,“Okay,” replied the broom, “your command is understood.”They whirled around the town enjoying the sites from above,Oh, thought Spaghetti, I have found my true love! When they returned home after their first exploration,Spaghetti and her broom had a long conversation.“What else can you do?” Spaghetti wanted to know,“I can dance, I can sing, I can put on a show.”“Show me,” she said, and the broom began his routine,It was clearly the most amazing thing she had ever seen! They talked and played for hours and traveled everywhere,It might seem strange to be in love with a broom, but she didn’t care.Spaghetti and her broom decided to get married and start a family,They had two little dustpans and were as happy as could be!The End!

On The Lighter SideTHE TWELVE COMMANDMENTS FOR SENIORS:

1. Talk to yourself. There are times you need expert advice.2. “In Style” are the clothes that still fit.3. You don’t need anger management You need people 4. Your people skills are just fine. It’s your tolerance for idiots that

needs work.5. The biggest lie you tell yourself is, “I don’t need to write that

down. I’ll remember it.”6. “On time” is when you get there. 7. Even duct tape can’t fix stupid - but it sure does muffle the sound. 8. It would be wonderful if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten

minutes, then come out wrinkle free? 9. Lately, you’ve noticed people your age are so much older than you. 10. Growing old should have taken longer. 11. Aging has slowed you down, but it hasn’t shut you up. 12. You still haven’t learned to act your age and hope you never will.

One More:“One for the road” means peeing before you leave the house.“Do not regret growing older…it is a privilege denied to many.”

Potpourri, Jokes, Food for ThoughtCONFESSION

I went into the confessional box after many years of being away from the Catholic Church.

Inside I found a fully equipped bar with Guinness on tap. On one wall, there was a row of decanters with fine Irish whiskey and Waterford crystal glasses.

On the other wall was a dazzling array of the finest cigars and chocolates.

When the priest came in, I said to him, “Father, forgive me, for it’s been a very long time since I’ve been to confession, but I must first admit that the confessional box is much more inviting than it used to be.”

He replied, “You moron, you’re on my side.”Submitted by Jay del Prado

You Are Stuck In An Elevator… Who Are You With?I had a dream the other nightAs I lay in my bed:My elevator stopped between floors 3 and 4Filling me with dread. But just when I started to scream in fearAnd thought I would have a stroke,There was George Burns and Jack Benny, too,Each telling me a joke.Laughter helped to calm my nervesAnd take away my fear,But suddenly the comedians were goneAnd Albert Einstein did appear. He knew that I would be less tenseIf he involved me in an activity,So he sat me down on the elevator floorAnd taught me his Theory of Relativity. Then he was gone and Van Cliburn cameAnd said to me, “You just gottaLearn to play this piano I brought.”And together we played a sonata. Then suddenly Bobby Fisher was there. He recognized my stress. He pulled out what seemed to be a checker board.I beat him 3 games of chess. When he left I soon began Again to be afraidBut Barbra Streisand appeared and we sang a duet of“Don’t Rain on My Parade.”Then Simone Biles and Aly Raisman arrivedAlthough I have no proof,They soon had me doing triple flipsUp by the elevator roof.Anxious to see me came Redford and NewmanNow my ego was elated. What happened next I cannot tellBecause it is x-rated.This was followed by Misty CopelandWe pirouetted and we prancedShe trained me in the fine art of balletAs the Dying Swan we danced. But morning came and I awokeThough I fought it with all my might.I’ll rush through my day real fast becauseCan’t wait to dream tonight.

Staying HealthyTHE BENEFITS OF WRITING

It is a known fact that writing is extremely therapeutic. The act of writing itself is a great stress relief, which helps improve focus and attention. Making writing a regular habit has been shown to increase creativity and deepen thinking and help keep the brain sharp.

That is the reason, five years ago, I began an eight-week course called Writing Our Stories.

Each week, a topic is given out to the group and when we meet again, the writer presents his or her piece with no criticism or judgment. The entire experience is for one’s own self-satisfaction. The benefit to others, however, is simply enjoying how each of us can take a topic and put our own “spin” on it.

Allow me to present four writings, which are an example of the wonderful creative nature that our scribes possess. I hope you enjoy reading them, and watch for others in the future. Nina Pesce
