Bibliography for 1992

Jack Mclntosh Connie Wawruck-Hemmett

Canadian Publications on the Former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe for 1992

This is the seventeenth annual bibliography of works published by Canadian scholars, pertaining to the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. For the purpose of this bibliography, "Soviet and East European" refers to all Slavic areas and the remaining territory of the former Soviet Union, Finland, the Baltic States, Hungary, Romania, Albania, and East Germany (1945-1990), but not to Turkey, Austria, Greece, China, or international communism outside the former bloc. Scholarly material covering immigrants from this area is also listed - it should be noted that this section has been renamed "Slavs and Eastern Europeans in the West" to include new areas of study.

The primary puipose of the bibliography is to be an up-to-date research tool. It is also hoped that it will make better known the range of activities and areas of expertise of Canadian scholars, as well as the expansion of Slavic Studies in general. This year, for example, another new section has been added, under the heading "Comparative Studies."

The bibliography for 1992 and covers imprints and journal issues bearing that date, unless otherwise indicated. Items dated prior to, but actually published in, 1992 have been included. Monographs, articles, review articles, identifiable sections of books, signed encyclopedia enfries, published occasional papers, and doctoral dissertations are listed; reviews, newspaper articles, mimeographed papers, and belles-lettres have been excluded.

Submissions by members of the Canadian Association of Slavists are included, and the compilers extend their appreciation to all those who provided items. Nevertheless, this bibliography was compiled primarily by Jack Mclntosh, who not only scanned current books and periodicals in the humanities and social sciences, but also referred to electronic databases. Thanks to the latter, this year's version represents a "catch-up" edition of well over five hundred entries, including many that had not previously come to the attention of the compilers.

Length has necessitated the abbreviation of some portions of the entries: (e.g., UP for University Press, CIUS for Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, and CSP for Canadian Slavonic Papers). Other information has been edited at the discretion of the compilers, who beg the indulgence of any who might take exception to such editing. Readers are urged to bring any omissions

or errors to the attention of the compilers, and to submit lists of their 1993 publications to the journal's offices.
