Canadian Heart Failure Society
2015-2016 Annual Report
The Canadian Heart Failure Society (CHFS)
provides a forum for cardiovascular
professionals to exchange ideas, advance
knowledge, improve practice and care
delivery in the prevention, diagnosis, and
management of all Heart Failure phases and
complications.
The CHFS interacts with the Canadian
Cardiovascular Society (CCS) as an affiliated
organization in matters associated with the
continuum of heart failure. CHFS strives to
provide guidance for medical trainees in
Canada, while advocating for heart failure
patients, their families, and professionals
providing care to those living with the risks
and complications heart failure.
Membership As an additional benefit of membership, we will be offering reduced rate registration for
CHFS members for the 2017 HF Update conference. CHFS and Canadian Council of
Cardiovascular Nurses (CCCN) continue to offer a reduced price joint CCCN/CHFS
membership. The second year of this incentive continues to result in membership growth
with twenty-four members taking advantage of this offer. Allied Health and Members in
Training memberships continue to increase. These two groups will be specifically featured
in future website enhancement.

AREA OF FOCUSED COMPETENCE (AFC)
"On September 7th the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s Specialty
Standards Review Committee (SSRC) formally approved the Area of Focused Competence
(AFC) Diploma in Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation.
This initiative, birthed in collaboration with the Canadian Cardiac Transplant Network, was
supported by a pan-Canadian working group of HF and Cardiac Transplant specialists
under the leadership of Dr. Brian Clarke and Dr. Sean Virani. Many thanks and
congratulations to this group of individuals who worked tirelessly to support the
development of a comprehensive suite of standards for both trainees and academic
institutions.
Trainees, practicing specialists and institutions interested in applying for AFC recognition
should refer to the Royal College website.”
NURSING Collaboration with the Canadian Council of Cardiovascular Nurses (CCCN) continues,
whereby nurses receive a discount with a joint CCCN and CHFS membership. Twenty-four
members took advantage of this offer.
Progress continues for enhancing awareness of the heart failure specialty certification for
nurses through the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses (AAHFN). Dr. Nancy
Albert, chair of the AAHFN Certification Board, provided information in a workshop for
nurses at the HF Update conference in Montreal, May 2016. In addition to nurses who
primarily have a clinical role and quality for the specialty certification (CHFN), the AAHFN-
Certification Board has recently created the credential CHFN-K, for those positions in the
heart failure community that though not clinical, indirectly impact the heart failure patient.
The exam is the same as the CHFN, but eligibility criteria has been tailored to ensure that
the CHFN-K exam candidate equally meets the standards set to sit for the exam.
The Canadian Heart Failure Society (CHFS) is a recognized
Affiliate Organization of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society

The Inaugural CHFS Annual Achievement Award
Dr. Malcolm Arnold is a retired cardiologist, working
formerly at University Hospital, London Health Sciences
Centre and Professor of Medicine, Physiology and
pharmacology at Western University in London, Ontario
He is Past Director of Research Affairs for the Division of Cardiology and Program Leader, Circulation Group, Lawson Health Research Institute.
Dr. Arnold has published over 250 scientific manuscripts, theses and book chapters. He has received the University Faculty of Medicine Dean’s Awards for both Excellence in Research and Excellence in Teaching.
He graduated first in his class from Queen’s University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. His postgraduate training took place in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, Harvard Medical School and Brigham Women’s Hospital, Boston.
During his doctoral research, Dr. Arnold proposed for the first time that beta-2 adrenoceptors were present in the human heart. Later, he and a colleague discovered and published the effect of grapefruit juice on drug metabolism, which the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, in 2004, called one of the best papers in the last 30 years.
“I’m fortunate to have participated in the enormous changes in this field,” he says, “and to learn from colleagues who have been supportive and have taught me so much.”
Dr. Arnold co-founded the Canadian Heart Failure Network. It brought together heart failure clinics linked through a unique longitudinal database, following over 20,000 patients. He also conceived and supported the Canadian Heart Failure Society, which is now an affiliate of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society.
He has served on the Canadian Cardiovascular Society’s Executive Council, the Heart Failure Society of America Council, and the Steering Committee of the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Arnold was the first Chair of the CCS Heart Failure Guidelines Program.
Dr. J. Malcolm O. Arnold
The CHFS Annual Achievement
Award was created in 2016 to
recognize a member who has
made significant contributions to
the academic, research, or clinical
scopes of heart failure.
The CHRS is very pleased to
announce this year’s award
recipient; Dr. J. Malcolm O. Arnold.
Please help us honour our
colleague and friend at the CCS
Award ceremony on Sunday,

responsible for the overall operations of the organization. Their roles include all levels of
member communication, development of educational content, member engagements initiatives,
and performing all financial and operational and meeting obligations. To learn more about the
new CHFS structure contact [email protected].
The third Heart Failure Update was held in Montreal on June 2-4,
2016. HF Update 2016 was a 2-day national congress accredited
by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS).
The meeting was co-chaired by Dr. Jonathan Howlett and Dr.
Serge Lepage. The planning committee consisted of seven
Canadian cardiologists and two nurses.
2016 Learning Objectives
1. Integrate the data and recommendations from new trials on blood pressure targets, heart rate and rhythm control in HF
2. Individualize and initiate appropriate HF treatment, pharmacological or technological, based on patient needs and available therapeutic options
3. Effectively treat
patients with co-morbidities, such as diabetes or atrial fibrillation
4. Evaluate the role of
monitoring and other preventive strategies in reducing hospital readmissions
Program:
Developed by the Canadian Heart Failure Society (CHFS), this
third annual edition featured engaging presentations, panel
discussions and interactive workshops by top national and
international heart failure (HF) key opinion leaders.
Heart failure experts examined up-to-date clinical data, current
recommendations and applications for a variety of heart failure
management aspects.
2016 program highlights include:
Treating HF subgroups (diabetes, AF, hypertension)
Blood pressure targets and heart rate control
Practical approaches to patient care
Sleep-disordered breathing
Candidates for LVAD and novel valve therapies
Hospital readmissions: prevention and benchmarking

CCS Heart Failure Comprehensive Rewrite and Living
Document
The CCS Heart Failure Guideline Panel is currently developing a
comprehensive rewrite to consolidate ten years of annual guideline
updates. This is a major, labour intensive undertaking involving members
of both the primary and secondary panels. The comprehensive guideline
will form the basis for high quality care for patients with HF, and will
underpin the development of best practices. Panel members expect the
full document to be completed by March/April 2017 and they are working
with the CJC for publication options. Dissemination will be supported
through a multifaceted ‘living document’ web interface, with
recommendations, integrated summaries and search features to provide a
total approach to HF care.
