First Inhabitants
• Asians: The first Asians crossed over the Bering Strait in B.C. 1300
• Vikings: arrive in Newfoundland in A.D. 1ooo, after discovering it while looking for Greenland. They came from Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

Settlers
• French: The French arrived in the 1600’s over the Atlantic Ocean and founded New France
• British: The British arrived in the 1600’s and took political control in 1763 and the number of English- speaking people
rose in Canada afterward

• Pull: Fishing, minerals, timber, transportation corridors
• Push: Weather, frozen land, transportation barriers
Historical Events
• 1763- Treaty of Paris gives Canada to Great Britain
• 1931- Canada gains complete independence from Great Britain
• 1939- 1945- more than 1,000,000 Canadians serve in World War II; almost 100,000 died
• 1965- The current Canadian flag was adopted to show that it was only Canada
