  • Career Zone Basics of Personality Development We all know that people are about 80% water which means we all are 80% identical – is that right? So what is that 20% which makes us different; it is not how tall or thin we are or what colour is our skin or hair. What really makes us different is what is inside: ‘up here’ in our heads and ‘in here’ in our hearts – our values, be-liefs and thoughts. These innate qualities are important because they make us who we are. They silently guide our actions, the way we live our lives and communicate with oth-ers. What comes to your mind when you hear the words ‘Personality Develop-ment’? Is it the images of famous people who were successful in their respective profession or field? Yes, they were successful because of the qualities of the mind and heart they possessed that did not come or hap-pen naturally. They had to make a continuous effort to develop their personality. Personality development helped them gain confidence and high self esteem which had a positive impact on their communication skills and the way they saw the world re-sulting in their being role models for

others. ‘Personality’ is an integration of physical, emotional, intellectual, so-

cial, psychological and spiritual char-acteristics of an individual where as ‘Development’ is an ongoing process. Personality development is an unend-ing conscious effort being made to improve upon our existing knowl-edge, skills and attitude. To begin working on developing our personal-ity we need to be aware of ‘us’ first. Each one of us is unique in our own way. We need to know ourselves well to embark on our journey of person-ality development in order to climb up the ladder of growth ‘n success. If we want to ‘sharpen our axe’ it’s important that we know our core beliefs and fundamental life influ-ences which have resulted in our pre-sent life structure and pattern. We should be aware of our interests, in-clinations, relationships, and our source of energy which sustains growth and a sense of well being amongst us leading to hopes for our future; of our inherent potential, our strengths and what makes us special leading us to desired results, achieve-ments and realization of our goals. We should not ignore our weak-nesses, challenges and difficulties which will otherwise become road blockers to success. Developing a winning personality to make an impact is not a hit-and-miss affair or matter of luck but a con-scious and focused effort. So to rein-vent ourselves to achieve something we have never had, we need to do something we have never done. Self belief is the cornerstone to personal-ity development. So start with a con-fident smile as nothing works better than a smile while interacting with people and wins over even the toughest soul. Always think positive, be adaptable to change and look at

the broader perspective of life. Dressing sensibly and smartly goes a long way in honing one’s personality. One needs to dress according to the time, place and occasion. An individ-ual who is turned out appropriately and conducts himself well is re-spected and liked by all. Do remem-ber to let go of your ego or that will prove to be the biggest speed breaker in your race towards the fin-ishing line. Effective communication skills play the most crucial role in honing our personality. We should speak really well to make a mark of our own. Our thoughts, feelings and knowledge should be passed on in the most de-sirable manner and effective commu-nication skills help. It is not just the verbal communication but non verbal communication which plays a larger role. Body language is vital to crystal clear communication. Great men of the world who have achieved pinnacles of success were not freaks of nature. Success did not fall into their lap from heavens; they

achieved it by sheer will, discipline and persistence. It’s easy to develop your personality provided you are willing to make sincere efforts to-wards enhancing it. Wish you success in your endeavors! Mrs Harinder K. Sraw Director – Placements

  • Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school – Albert Einstein

What is popular today can vanish to-morrow. What is considered useless can become a necessity tomorrow. Is there anything we can vouch on, that never changes? May be the universe was not made to be static and perma-nent. From the very basic particle like atoms to the biggest galaxy, it was de-signed for movement, for a cyclic proc-ess, for progress or basically for change. Change is the law of the uni-verse. Change is progress. Change is success. Only change is permanent.

The real future of a graduate depends on the adaptability to change. One may be used to having one’s way but can they take on corrections? Having a good time at the beach and eight hours of sleep is your style, can you sacrifice on them? Social media is your thing; can you work under strict supervision? Rain equals to bunking college, can you meet deadlines inspite of cold and rain? It is this ability to adapt to any situation, be it in thinking, culture, food habits, work, people etc is what helps one climb the ladder of success. It is not the end result but the process that counts. It is not your curriculum vitae but the core of you what employ-ers hunt for.

Have you observed that life will not always give recognition for adapting? You may finally be operating a huge machine yet be confronted for tiniest of an error. You may have mastered troubleshooting yet be classified as a trainee. Why? A mother does not get a certificate to raise her kids or an em-ployee working over-time necessarily gets increment. Life is about learning to contribute to the system. It is about adding value to society. If you want true education or success, it can come through service. If you want a job, visit an industry and volunteer for free. Take up a challenging project and give

your best, for free. You will be aston-ished with the breakthrough you get. Give valuable, to get valuable.

At the Training, Career Counseling and Placement Cell (TCCPC) of Laxmi Vidyapeeth, Sarigam we value and lay emphasis on soft-skill training and various practical activities that enhance employability skills through in-house workshops and industry pro-jects. TCCPC offers training through Technical Training Program to provide hands on technical experience on in-struments. Soft-Skills Development Program for professional culture, self-respect and a good character. Guest Lectures to attend for connecting and learning from an expert as they are exposed to various perspectives on a subject. Industrial Visits to get famil-iarized with industry environment and get a feel of work frameworks and discipline. Campus Drive to secure a job offer.

We are committed to make our stu-dents job-ready and welcome ideas from students, staff and all readers to help in trainings and campus drive. FAQs What are the basic employability skills the

final year students should have honed by now to be successfully employable?

The basic skills required are fluency in English, communication skills, team work, analyzing and investigating, initiative, creativity, positive attitude, planning and organizing, domain knowledge, general awareness, professional etiquette, time management and leadership techniques.

What attributes does an employer look for in an employee?

It is generally expected that graduates should be equipped with a balance of technical and functional knowledge, along with relevant ‘soft skills’ required at the work place.

How can I build upon my confidence?

Self-confidence comes from self-respect which needs to be earned by your actions. You yourself are responsible for your ac-tions so be self disciplined, self motivated and sincere in all that you do.

What is undertaken during soft-skills and personality development training? Is it important?

Soft-skills and personality development training helps learn how to manage our-selves and interact with each other. They are also referred to as ‘People Skills’ or ‘Life Skills’. It helps you communicate and collaborate effectively leading you to per-sonal success.

Is project work helpful in securing a job?

We believe what we see with our own eyes. In the same way, recruiters do not believe your curriculum vita unless you show implementation of what you have learned. Your project work is a working proof that you know your subject well. It is very important and gives an idea of your potential and passion.

Can you share a few selection criteria for interview?

Professionalism, effective communication, high energy, positive learning attitude and confidence are high in demand at the rapidly changing workplace.

How to write a dynamic Curriculum Vita?

This is a loaded question and it takes a whole session to explain this but one thing to focus on is your hobbies and project work which should show that you are a versatile person who is interested in life long learning and will accept any chal-lenge.
