Recap of Member Meeting Jan. 4, 2020

The WE United Board held an online Member Meeting on Saturday, January4, 2020. The meeting began promptly at 10:00 AM, Pacific, and was adjournedat 11:35.

Members had the opportunity to ask questions and provide input on a variety oftopics.

The slides we used are shared here:

Prior to the meeting, we sent a survey to members requesting input on whatthey wanted addressed in the meeting. In all, 57 members replied to thesurvey. We used their input to guide our agenda for the session.

We began the meeting by presenting an overview of membership numbers asof January 1, 2020, as well as showing the growth in membership since WEUnited was founded in 2016.

(NOTE: as of January 15, WE United has 456 members, an increase of 40since the numbers were pulled on January 1 in preparation for our membermeeting).

Because the information is relevant to our discussions related to collaborationswith the Confederation, we also presented a side-by-side comparison of the twoorganizations' published membership lists, as of January 1, 2020. During themeeting, we discussed that the Confederation has a tiered membershipstructure (individual members who are eligible to vote and receive awards, andmembers of group member organizations, who can compete without payingnon-member fees but are ineligible to vote or receive awards), and that thesenumbers represent only those people who have full membership rights withinthe Confederation (and are thus listed on their website).

We also looked at the overlap between the two organizations' membershiprosters. Based on information available on January 1, 2020, fully 42% ofConfederation members (79 of 187) are also members of WE United, and 19%of WE United members (79 of 415) also hold membership with theConfederation. Of people who are members of only one of the national WEorganizations, 75% are members of WE United, while 25% are members of theConfederation.

During the member meeting, the importance of referencing these and othermember statistics was discussed.

Although WE United Treasurer Erin O'Shaughnessy was unable to attend themember meeting, she had prepared a DRAFT of the 2019 financials inadvance.

An official year-end statement will be shared once it is finalized, but the bottomline is that WE United continues to experience financial stability and growth.Revenue for 2019 was $111,056, and expenses were $83,041, generating anestimated net revenue gain of $28,067.

After a pause to allow members to ask for clarification about the draft financialstatement, we moved on to WE competition participation. Not surprisingly, theregions with the most members also saw the greatest # of competition rides in2019. Interestingly, though, when the proportion of rides per member in a givenregion is taken into account, Region 5 actually saw the greatest per-membercompetition activity last year.

In terms of International activity, we discussed the difference betweenInternational events and official WAWE-recognized InternationalChampionships.

WE United is the organization that initiated the Cross-National WE Camp &Cup, a fun international exchange of teaching and learning (the Camp), cappedoff by a huge B-Rated show (the Cup).

Before WE United members can participate in official championshipsrecognized by the World Association for Working Equitation (WAWE), theinternational governing body for the sport, the United States must be acceptedas a WAWE member nation.

The WE United Board is hoping that our proposed WAWE Liaison Council willhelp facilitate inclusion of the United States in WAWE.

We shared the working draft of the proposal, with input from the Confederationas well as WE United leadership, with those on the call and asked for additionalsuggestions/ideas to help refine the proposal even more, in preparation forcollaborative meetings between the Confederation and WE United leadership inthe next few weeks.

We spent the greatest amount of time during the meeting getting input frommembers on future collaborations with the Confederation for WorkingEquitation. The conversation was both interesting and civil, and we look forwardto soliciting more information from members in the months to come!

At least one person had requested information on how RegionalChampionships were organized, so we covered that briefly.

We reminded members where they can find WE events (and thanked ourRegional Directors for their help in gathering Event information). We alsodemonstrated the 'Agenda' view for those who might not be as familiar with itand showed how to import events into personal calendars.

Briefly, we touched on plans for the coming year and beyond, reflecting on theneed for strategic planning now that we're in our 5th year of existence andmentioning the hope that we'll be able to contract with a bookkeeper to assistthe Treasurer with maintaining financial records and providing more frequentreports as well as a data processor to help keep the website and show statisticsmore current.

In addition, we are interested in finding ways to better support our members inthe regions with the fewest competition rides (R6 and R7). If you havesuggestions, please share them with the Board by writing [email protected].

The Board will be meeting the last Wednesday of each month and plans toadopt a 2020 budget at our January Board meeting.

All the other adopters that were interested inher found out the Lynx was too much horse for them on the testrides. They keep the registration papers for 2 years as part of theadoption process. I tested the first couple levels in WDAA a fewyears ago with Jazz, but she had a year off due to injury, leadingto a couple years of losing focus. I hope going to some eventswill get us back in sync. We have other horses that could allbenefit from Working Equitation, but these are the 2 we are ridingfirst.

A good jump needs rythym and impulsion for a clean, smooth effort.

HOW THE MOVEMENT SHOULD BE PERFORMED

Come out of the turn with no change in speed to a straight approach withimpulsion. If your horse needs confidence, check in with him 5 or 6 strides before thejump, then 3 or four strides before the jump. A good feel for the timing of the take offis helpful, but any adjustments should be made several strides away, NOT the laststride and NOT a stride-and-a-half before the jump as interaction with the bit andreins will distract the horse and disrupt rhythm. Adding leg just prior to take off maybe appropriate for some. The rider should be looking forward beyond the jump itself,

Page 20: Campaign Overview | Mailchimp · 2020-01-01 · Campaign Overview | Mailchimp 1/15/20, 303 PM Page 1 of 24 January 2020 Newsletter View this email in your

as looking down can cause the horse to hit the jump or refuse. The horse shouldhave good bascule (arch - like a dolphin jumping out of the ocean) over the jump anda straight, soft landing that is not abrupt or rushing.

COMMON MISTAKES

*Leaving long (too far back)*Leaving late (too short) - losing impulsion and rhythm*Rushing*Rider jumping ahead (leaning forward too soon)*Rider getting left behind the motion - possibly hitting horse in mouth with bit, whichmay cause the horse to refuse, run out, or "pop" the jump in fear of being hit in themouth again.

WAYS TO INCREASE SCORE

*Keep eyes up on the middle of the jump where you want to go as you approach*Once in range of the jump (3-4 strides away) look beyond the jump at the landingand then look at the horizon line of where you are heading AFTER the jump. LEADyour horse to the other side and beyond*Good bascule over the jump and landing in a straight line in good rhythm*Staying in balance with the horse and giving the reins towards the bit to allow thehorse to stretch and use his neck and back over the jump*Hind legs of horse pushing off the ground evenly with the front legs lifting with kneestogether without one leg hanging lower than the other*Avoid touching the jump*Horse should have a keen, willing expression exhibiting confidence and trust thatthe rider will guide and allow him to do his job instead of interfering with his effort

EXERCISES TO WORK ON AT HOME

The following information is provided specifically for people who are just gettingstarted with jumping.

Always lunge a new horse over a pole first, and then a cavaletti, before trying undersaddle, so the horse can figure out how to use his body without the weight of a rider.A horse loses sight of the jump in the last stride, so he is jumping from memory.

Once your horse is confident lunging cavelettis, start riding over 3 poles on theground, spaced 4ft 2in apart for trotting (for most horses - adjust according to yourown horse's trot stride). Focus on straightness, rhythm, and balance.

Page 21: Campaign Overview | Mailchimp · 2020-01-01 · Campaign Overview | Mailchimp 1/15/20, 303 PM Page 1 of 24 January 2020 Newsletter View this email in your

Page 21 of 24https://us13.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=2122857

own horse's trot stride). Focus on straightness, rhythm, and balance.

To find your balance in 2-point jumping position - while halted, stand straight up outof the saddle in stirrups, bend over, and let your hips slide back over your heels andplace your hands on the horse's neck to find the spot where you can balance whileyou "bounce" up and down in your knees and not fall forward or back. Try walkingaround in this position and eventually build strength by trotting, cantering, andeventually galloping.

When ready to start jumping, leave the first ground pole and walk 8ft and make asmall X crossbar. This is only for trotting and will help your horse learn to rock backand jump with bascule. The pole also helps the rider to know when to prepare for thejump! Think trot in and allow horse to canter out.

To prepare for jumping, at first pole, put your weight straight down into your stirrupsand give your hands towards the bit. Hold the mane for support halfway up neck atthe crest. If your horse jumps over the first pole, he is rushing. Give him a half halt5-6 strides back before the pole. Check in again at 3-4 strides before the pole to seeif he needs another half halt. If your horse hesitates or stops before the jump, give asoft squeeze after you go over the first pole at the base of the jump. If needed, give acluck too.

Rider position: The jump should be ridden in a two-point position that should happennaturally when staying with your horse's movement. Your center should be over thecenter of the saddle and not the pommel, with your hips over your heels and eyes up.Your hands should either follow low toward the bit in an automatic release or pressedon the sides of your horse's neck in a short release or long release, also called crestrelease.

1. Automatic release – hands go low toward bit, forming a straight line from bit tohand through elbow line.

2. Short release – hands go forward at base of neck with knuckles pressed onsides of neck

3. Long release (also known as crest release) – hands are pressed in the neckhalfway up at the crest of the neck.

The safest hand position for a beginner is a long release/crest release. And it isALWAYS better to grab a bit of mane to avoid hanging onto the reins for balance.Hitting your horse in the mouth with the bit only punishes him for his effort.

Once horse and rider are comfortable over the pole to jump, try raising the jump alittle. Or you can work on timing without the first ground pole without changing any ofthe previous training.

the previous training.

Jumping low jumps can become easy and fun for any horse and rider with a littlepatient and careful practice! I look forward to seeing you all in the upcoming year. Good luck!
