What’s Your Child’s Dream Camp?Finding a great summer camp for your child, whether it’s a day camp or overnight, takes a bit of research. Here are some factors to consider:

FocusDo you want a general outdoor camp or a specialized one? Consider these components:

n  Religion as part of the day-to-day program

n  Academic environment

n  Sports-centered setting

n  Artistic atmosphere (creative, visual or performing arts)

n  Technology setting

PaceDo you want your child to have lots of activities or a fair amount of free time? If activities, which ones are important?

n  Hiking

n  Swimming

n  Campfires

n  Reading/Storytelling

n  Archery

n  Arts and Crafts

n  Horseback riding

n  Games

n  Sports

n  Performing Arts/Drama/Dance

n  Field Trips

CostIt’s important, especially if you have more than one child.

n  Decide how much you want to spend per week for summer camp

n  Explore what’s in your price range by breaking down how much each camp costs per week per child

n  Be sure to factor in travel costs and whether you’ll need to purchase supplies or uniforms

DurationHow long do you want your child at camp?

n  One week

n  Two weeks

n  Three weeks

n  Four weeks

n  More than four weeks

Size and GenderSmaller camps may make for closer relationships; larger camps often offer more group games and a wide range of personalities. Some kids may be more comfortable in same-gender camps.

First choose:

n  Small

n  Medium

n  Large

AgesHow old should the campers be?

n  Same age

n  Two-year spread

n  Five-year spread

n  Any age is fine

Overnight CampsLocation and setting are key elements. Close to home or hundreds of miles away? An urban environment or wilderness?

Locationn  Far from home

n  Same region

n  Same state

n  Within 100 miles

Setting

n  Country

n  City

n  Lakeside

n  Mountains

n  Oceanside

Then decide:

n  All boys

n  All girls

n  Co-ed

n  Go to a camp expo. You’ll find lots of camp information under one roof. You can talk with representatives of the camps you’re interested in and gather brochures. (Atlanta Parent’s camp expos are Jan. 24 at North Point Mall, Feb. 21 at Town Center Mall and March 21 at Perimeter Mall (all expos are from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.)

n  Research online. Most camps have extensive information and photos to give you a picture of what camp life is like.

n  Ask your family, friends and neighbors. Many of them were campers themselves or can tell you about their child’s experience at camp.

Atlanta Parent Magazine’s Camp Expo

Research Tools to Help with Your Camp Search

For overnight campsn  Visit the finalists. If you’re unsure which camp is best, take your child and go for a tour. Some camps have open houses, and you’ll get a good sense of how your kid will spend his week or weeks at camp. Consider starting your search a year in advance and visiting a summer camp in progress to see what goes on.

n  Get the names of former campers. Camps you’re interested in should be able to help you contact former campers who can tell you what your child can expect.

Countdown to Overnight Camp

You’ll have the best shot at registering your child at your top pick now rather than later. Believe it or not, some overnight camps are already full for their summer season. Here’s a month-by-month guide to preparing for the camp experience.

n  Now: If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to finalize your top picks for an overnight camp. Call each camp on the list and talk with the director and other references to see if the camp is a match for your child.

n  Four Months Ahead: Now that you’ve selected a camp, be sure to send in all registration forms and fees on time. You should also receive an information packet with details on what your child can expect from the camp experience. Your child may have to complete a physical. If so, schedule it early and mark it off your to do list.

n  Two-Three Months Ahead: Camp time will be here before you know it! Spend these months preparing your child for camp. If you can, visit the camp during an open house so your child can meet the director and tour the facilities.

Now is the time to start making travel arrangements and stocking up on supplies. Your camp should provide a list of clothes and toiletries your child will need during his session.

n  Just Weeks Away: Summer is here! As your child starts his session, prepare yourself for his departure and start writing a few letters.

Holy Spirit Prep

Each summer, Holy Spirit Prep hosts summer camps for all

Atlanta-area students, ages 6 months-12th grade. HSP avoids one-size-fits-all mega camps, which means camps can be tailored to your child’s interests. Want to work on your tennis serve or throwing a curve ball? They can definitely do that. At HSP’s camps, students can receive personal attention from instructors who are experts and professionals in their field and who love the kids they teach.

Scattered across the school’s two campuses in Buckhead and Sandy Springs, Holy Spirit Prep’s summer program includes camps for just about everyone: sports camps for training and just for fun, academic camps to improve skills and prepare students for their next school year, visual and performing arts camps, STEM camps that will teach your child how to build robots and how to code, even adventure camps that explore Atlanta. There’s something for every child at HSP.

For more information about HSP’s summer camps, please contact Robert Villante, HSP’s Director of Summer Programs, at [email protected] or 678.904.2811. More information is available online at www.holyspiritprep.org/summer.

High Meadows Camp

Established in 1973 on 40 acres of farm and forest in Roswell

Georgia, High Meadows Camp offers a structured outdoor recreational program focusing on personal responsibility and environmental respect. In a relaxed, caring, and non-competitive atmosphere, each camper is encouraged to engage in new experiences and build relationships.

Each day, High Meadows Camp welcomes 300 children, from age four to 14, to participate in a traditional camp experience. Groups are arranged by grade level, and generally have two counselors for every 12 to 15 children. The exemplary staff continues well-established traditions while teaching unique age-appropriate classes that include: Animal Care, Arts and Crafts, Archery, Swimming, Sports, Canoeing, Indian Lore, Photography, Pony Rides, Ropes, Dance, Performing Arts, Nature, Pioneering, and Woodworking.

Preschoolers participate in a shortened day program with constant nurturing supervision, fun activities and exploring the campus. Bus transportation is available from various locations in the north metro area.

At High Meadows Camp, summer fun goes hand-in-hand with learning, achievement, and enrichment. In short, it’s what camp should be. Additional information at www.highmeadowscamp.org or 770.993.2940.

Porter Academy Summer Camp

While summer vacat ion carries happy memories

of family, friends, and the great outdoors, it also has a downside. Many students suffer significant academic loss over the summer, and this loss seems to be exaggerated for children with learning differences. Porter Academy’s goal is to help children maintain academic levels within a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Each of the five weeks has a different theme: Willy Wonka Week, US RV Trip, Birthday Celebration, Superheroes, and Beach Party. Academics are interwoven into fun activities throughout each day as well as directly taught in small groups. This balance of fun and academics allows campers to relax and enjoy their summer while having academic skills reinforced.

Campers participate in PE, Occupational Therapy, Music Therapy, games, arts & crafts, and hands-on-learning activities as well as in-house fieldtrips including the Art Barn and Nana Nature. Porter Academy creates a fun and fulfilling summer program that keeps students engaged and learning throughout the summer, thereby linking their academic success from year to year.

For more information or to register, visit the website www.porteracademy.org or call 770-594-1313.

Children engineer the craziest things in their engineering creation lab and Robotic Explorers in Roswell, Georgia

wants to fuel more summer creative fun. The organization will offer seven weeks of summer camp this year with infinite opportunities for children to Explore, Discover, and Create. Multi-week and single-week camp registrations are available for children 6 years old to 12 years old who are curious about how things work. The camp program will run from June 8 to July 24. Full-day and half-day programs are offered. Full-day campers enjoy the lunch of their choice from the organization’s catering partner, Jason’s Deli and an adventure-filled field trip each day. Multi-week and Multi-child discounts apply. Early drop-off and late-pick up service is available.

Amazing Machine campers aged 6 to 8 practice their design skills as they create elaborate LEGO models and machines for each week’s set of projects. Computer programming is powered by LEGO WeDo and its icon-based programming language allowing campers

to animate the models that they create. The world of science is explored in each week’s series of science labs and campers

create something new to take home each day.

Mindstorms campers of all levels make up the 9 to 12 year old camper crowd. Mechanical design and computer programming are advanced to the next level with LEGO Technic building elements and the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robotics system. Each week of

camp features a new robot and a new series of design projects for beginner and experienced young engineers. Real problems inspire original creations during this camp and give campers an opportunity to apply their math and science skills while meeting new friends.

Robotic Explorers is a non-profit organization. Enriching programs are offered year-long for children 3 to 17 years-old including weekly

classes, competitive teams, workshops and camps. Visit the website to learn more at www.RoboticExplorers.com or contact them at 770-772-6622.
