Our vision…

“Everyone Learning Every Day”

Our shared commitments...

Together, we will establish activities and classes that directly improve student learning.

Together, we will use student results/data in making decisions about changes to our school.

Together, we will emphasis good behavior in our students and staff to create a quality, learning environment.

Together, we will commit to quality work.

Together, we will all accept responsibility for creating success in our school.

Together, we will improve timely communication of expectations, student information, and procedures.

Together, we will prepare students for their future learning needs.

Our meeting norms:

All team members will be prepared and participate.

Meetings will have a clear, focused agenda published ahead of time and should be limited to items requiring

discussion or clarification.

Be professional, respect others and their opinions through active listening. Sidebar conversations should be

limited and on topic.

Meetings will have a pre-established date and time frame and will begin and end on time.

Rules of confidentiality shall be clearly communicated and followed.

Documentation will be available.

Our common language…

The BIG 4 Questions:

1) What do we want kids to know?

2) How will we assess what they know?

3) What will we do if they don’t learn it?

4) What will we do if they already know it?

3 Types of Teaming:

1. Interdisciplinary Teaming: Shared students with integrated curriculum

2. Departmental Teaming: Shared curriculum with common assessments

3. SMART Teaming: Shared goals with systematic collaboration

Collaboration:

Collaboration is a systematic process in which teachers work together to analyze and improve their classroom practice to

achieve shared goals. Camaraderie and congeniality are great, but they are not collaboration.

Consensus:

“All opinions will be valued, leading to a shared, committed decision.”

Page 4: CAMDENTON MIDDLE SCHOOL€¦ · First Day of School Activities 20 Flower Fund 7 Game Work Schedule 21 – 22 Gate and Concession Stand Procedures 23 Guest Speakers 17 Guidelines for

SMART Goals:

SMART Goals are a very effective process for finding tools and methods that let you act on the belief that learning and

improvement should be explicitly linked.

Focus Teams:

A small group of advisors composed of selected individuals who are focused on one specific goal and collaborate to

develop recommendations designed for continuous improvement toward that goal.

SMART Goals:

Goal 1: Professional Learning Community

We will fully implement all aspects of the District’s PLC Implementation Guide by May 1st, 2014 as evidenced by

the production of the required artifacts.

Goal 2: Attendance

Within two years increase district attendance rate to 90% of 90% of population as indicated in the

District’s APR (Annual Performance Report).

GRADE EVALUATION

Grades are indicated by the letters A, B, C, D, and F. Under certain circumstances, delayed grades (W-withheld

or incomplete) are given. Plus and minus grades may be given, i.e., A-, B+, etc. Semester grades should be based on

total points for the two quarters of the semester and not on averaging the two letter grades for the quarters.

Final Exam Policy

Comprehensive semester exams shall be given by all teachers at each teacher's discretion on the specific day set

aside for finals by the administration. This final may be included as part of the quarter grade. If the semester final is not

included as a quarter grade, the teacher shall send information home to the parents, prior to the final, explaining how the

semester grade will be determined.

Each teacher should follow this grading scale unless special circumstances require a deviation from it.

Grade Interpretation

1. A - Masters essentials and employs them in related fields; exhibits

intellectual curiosity in the subject.

2. B - Easily understands essentials; does some worthwhile supplementary

work; shows interest.

3. C - Understands minimum essentials; cooperates. This is an average grade.

4. D - Barely learns essentials; is likely to do no extra work; often shows

indifferent attitude.

5. F - Receives no credit. Few people fail if they have made an effort.

MAKE-UP WORK

Students with an excused absence can and should make up all work missed. Those who are unexcused will

receive an F for the work missed. If unusual circumstances are present, some agreement will be worked out with the

teacher, students, and principal. Please see the “Make-Up Work” section of the Student Handbook.

TRANSPORTATION TO SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

All school-sponsored trips must be made with public approved transportation school buses. Transportation

must be arranged through the assistant principal's office. Approval should be requested two weeks in advance of any bus

usage. This will help us avoid any unnecessary problems obtaining the desired number of buses.

Generally speaking, students should be required to ride school buses to and from activities. Individual

circumstances, however, may require exceptions. The following guidelines are to be observed in making these

exceptions:

1. Students remaining on campus after the regular school day must be supervised by a faculty sponsor

and remain with the sponsor until approved transportation arrives. Anyone not complying with this

regulation will lose the privilege of staying for any after-school activity.

2. The school provides transportation to extra-curricular activities. Any student riding to an activity on

school transportation must return on school transportation unless a parent or guardian requests in

person with the sponsor to assume the responsibility for the student's return after the activity is

complete. Students are not allowed to ride home with other students' parents or guardians. Any

exception to this rule must be due to unusual circumstances and requested in writing and approved in

advance of the activity by the principal or assistant principal.

3. Students wishing to get on or off the participants bus as it passes their home on the way to or from an

activity may do so if the sponsor, assistant principal or principal has advanced parental written

permission.

Transportation Requests. Requests for transportation can be found on the Novell-Delivered Application window that

is minimized in the lower left-hand side on the bottom of the computer screen. The Transportation icon will be used to

submit transportation requests for athletic events or field trips.

1. All requests must be submitted at least three days prior to the trip date.

2. All fields on the computer screen must be completed for the request to be considered. If you do not

know the exact date at the time of the submission of the request, put “TBA” in the field. Please enter

dates in the form mm/dd/yy.

3. A separate request must be completed for each trip.

4. When the request has been made, the building administrator will receive an automatic e-mail with a

link to view and approve the transportation request.

5. After administrative approval, the request is e-mailed to transportation to assign a bus and driver

6. You will receive an e-mail confirmation when this request is approved by the Transportation

Department.

If two buses are needed for any one trip or event, one bus will be designated for boys and one bus will be

assigned to girls.

Responsibility of the Sponsor.

Page 10: CAMDENTON MIDDLE SCHOOL€¦ · First Day of School Activities 20 Flower Fund 7 Game Work Schedule 21 – 22 Gate and Concession Stand Procedures 23 Guest Speakers 17 Guidelines for

10

1. While traveling, the sponsor should sit in the middle of the bus. If two sponsors are traveling, one

should sit near the front and the other should sit in the back of the bus.

2. The sponsor should be in control of discipline. The bus driver is not responsible for the control of

student behavior while on these trips. The responsibility lies with the sponsor. If you are the only

sponsor available, check various areas on a continuous basis. It is the sponsor’s responsibility that

noise be kept to a minimum.

3. The sponsor of the trip is responsible for the appearance of the inside of the bus after a trip. Sponsors

need to walk through the bus checking for paper goods, squashed food, and spilled drinks. Sponsors

will be held accountable for clean-up.

In our society, we can no longer assume that children will accept responsibility of good behavior and, even

though we can hold them accountable after the fact, we also need to take proactive measures to stop incidents from

occurring. Remember, that our school supports your activities and is appreciative that you are involved in our extra-

curricular activities; however, you need to take responsibility in assuring that the above is fulfilled.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

The following procedures will be observed when students have been absent:

A. If a student misses one or more days of class, they must report to the office to obtain an admit slip

before going to Lakertime (homeroom).

B. If a student misses a partial day, they should always report to the principal’s office before going to

class for a tardy slip.

C. If a student comes to class without an admit slip, after being absent the day before, it is the teacher’s

responsibility to direct them to the office.

D. Each teacher, each period, must initial the admit slip.

E. At the end of the day the 8th

hour teacher should initial the admit slip and then place in the Main Office

mailbox in the teacher workroom.

Students arriving on a late bus will be admitted to class by announcement over the intercom. No admit or tardy

slips are necessary for those individuals.

If you have marked a student absent who was not present at the time that roll was taken you must adjust the

attendance to show the student tardy or present when they arrive to class.

Tardiness is defined as a student being late to class and not being in their seat when the bell rings. Tardies are

recorded daily by the teacher and reported to the office after three unexcused tardies. When a student has received their

third unexcused tardy, the teacher will fill out a disciplinary report stating “unexcused tardies” and dates of tardies; for

example, 9/25, 10, and 11/l. “Excused” or “unexcused” tardies will be determined by the teacher. The teacher will

attach the three unexcused tardy slips to the Discipline Form. The teacher will send the student with the form to the

Assistant Principal’s Office. Tardies will continue to accumulate throughout the school year.

Attendance will be reported by use of computers AT THE BEGINNING OF EVERY PERIOD, EVERY DAY.

Note all students absent in your class. Pre-marking attendance is not allowed. i.e.: Marking a student absent for

every period that they have class with you or pre-marking “all present”.

STUDENT WITHDRAWAL FROM SCHOOL

Students who withdraw from school should get a withdrawal form from the Guidance Office and take it to each

teacher for the teacher's signature. The teacher should fill in the scholastic grade for the quarter as of the date of leaving.

The teacher should list books or other obligations (if any) that are due. The counselor, librarian, lunch cashier, and

attendance secretary must also indicate that everything is in order by signing the form. Teachers are notified by bulletin

of the name of the dropped student and the date they are to be dropped.

PROGRESS REPORTING

Mid-quarter reports will be mailed to each student on the fifth week of each quarter. Please refer to your CMS

calendar for specific dates.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF FAMILY

RIGHTS

AND PRIVACY ACT AND FILE

Note: For brevity, the following statements are taken from Board policy and represent CMS procedures. See Mr.

Kirksey, Mr. Ezard or one of the counselors if you wish to review the entire policy.

Definitions.

Records. Any information directly related to a student which is recorded in any medium which is maintained

(kept) by the educational agency or by a party acting for the agency and which is intended to be communicated to others.

Exclusions. The term "records" does not include records of instructional, supervisory and administrative

personnel and educational personnel ancillary thereto which:

1. Are in the sole possession of the maker

2. Are not accessible or revealed to any other individual except a substitute.

Note: Grade books must be treated as a record.

Record Custodian is the principal of the school. He/she is responsible for maintaining a set of procedures

relative to collection, maintenance, review, dissemination and release of student records. Record Custodian for Special

Education Files is the Director of Special Education. CMS counselors

Mrs. Pat McWhirter and Mr. Dennis Hiner have been designated responsibility for collection, maintenance, review,

dissemination and release of student permanent records. CMS Assistant Principal Todd Shockley has been designated

responsibility for collection, maintenance, review, dissemination and release of student general files maintained in the

principal's office.

1. All correspondence to parents relative to discipline.

2. Health records and information not covered under Section 1.34, 1.35, 1.36.

3. Family background information and personal data.

4. Teacher comments; character trait sheets.

5. Achievement progress reports in subject areas.

Standards for Collecting Records

1 No information should be added to the record that assesses or tends to classify the individual by any

individual unqualified to make such assessment or classification.

2. All information in the record should be based on objectivity and personal bias should never be

displayed.

3. All individual assessments of students which classify or evaluate a child should have supporting

evidence contained in the record also.

4. Care should be exercised in including information on behavior that represents a single isolated

incident. Information which represents a trend over a period of time has greater validity and

is more worthy of inclusion into the record.

Maintenance - The record custodian for each building is responsible for maintaining all student records. He may

delegate authority to the assistant principal or counselor to maintain certain records on individual students. The type of

information included in the record, however, is the sole responsibility of the record custodian.

The record custodian for special education is responsible for maintaining all comprehensive evaluations and

I.E.P. records.

No other person is authorized to add to the record or collect official record unless prior approval is given by the

record custodian. The review of records with students under 18 years of age is in no way prohibited when it is in the best

educational interest of the student to do so.

Dissemination - Only the record custodian or his designate may release records for use by any school personnel. Care

should be taken that school personnel wishing to use the record have a legitimate educational interest in that child.

Access to Information.

1. Either the parent of a student or an eligible student has the right to inspect and review the educational

records of the student unless prohibited by court order. Copies of the educational records can be

Page 12: CAMDENTON MIDDLE SCHOOL€¦ · First Day of School Activities 20 Flower Fund 7 Game Work Schedule 21 – 22 Gate and Concession Stand Procedures 23 Guest Speakers 17 Guidelines for

12

provided to the parent or eligible student with a charge for actual reproduction cost.

2. School district personnel may have access to the educational record so long as the person wishing

access has a legitimate educational interest in the child about whom the file pertains.

a. Legitimate interest would include, but not be limited to, having the child in class, counseling

the child, helping the child develop a school program.

b. School personnel may not pass educational record information on to third parties in any

manner and should not pass information on to other school personnel who do not have a

legitimate educational interest in the child.

Disclosure (Other Than To The Parent or Eligible Student)

1. Personally identifiable information from the educational records of a student may be disclosed without

the written consent of the parent of the student or eligible student if the disclosure is to

a. Other school officials, including teachers within the educational institution or local

educational agency who have been determined by such agency or institution to have

legitimate educational interests.

(1) School Officials - those employees of a school district who hold appropriate state

certification or who perform clerical duties under the direct supervision of the

principal.

(2) Legitimate Educational Interest - Those interests which are concerned with the

enrollment, re-enrollment, transfer, termination, suspension, or educational process

of the student.

HEALTH SERVICES

A trained nurse is on duty at the Camdenton Middle School during each school day. Her responsibilities are of

two kinds:

4. To carry out health programs designated by school board policy.

5. Provide first aid.

In case of accident or illness, a student should be sent to the health room or if this is not possible, the nurse

should be called to the scene of the accident or illness. All accidents causing injury at school or school activities should

be reported to the nurse, whether or not her services are needed.

First Aid Kit. The nurse has provided a first aid kit in the Middle School office for any injuries incurred after normal

school hours. This kit contains bandages, band aids, cold packs, alcohol swabs, cough drops, finger splints, arm slings,

etc., for extra-curricular sponsors and coaches use for any minor injuries or problems.

Accident Report Forms.

Written reports will be prepared on all accidents occurring on school property or at a school-sponsored activity.

When the school nurse is not available, it is the responsibility of the coach or teacher/sponsor to complete the standard

student accident report form. This form is can be obtained from the nurse. All accidents of any nature which causes

absence from school should be reported.

Policy for teachers to follow:

6. No student is to come to the nurse’s office without a corridor pass from his/her teacher definitely stating the

nurse’s office as their destination. When a student returns to his/her class, the corridor pass must have the

time he/she left the health room and be signed by the nurse.

7. Do not send a student to the health room at the end of a class. Ask the student to report to his next class

and get written permission to go to the nurse form that teacher.

8. Never give students any medication unless specifically requested to do so at the written direction of a

qualified physician under emergency conditions. (Specifically no aspirin or aspergum are to be given out.)

9. Please note on the corridor pass if you are giving a test when the student has to report to the nurse’s office.

10. Any time you have a question regarding a student’s health or physical condition, please feel free to check

with the school nurse.

Policy for the nurse to follow:

1. Students with serious illness or injury should be brought to the attention of the principal.

Page 13: CAMDENTON MIDDLE SCHOOL€¦ · First Day of School Activities 20 Flower Fund 7 Game Work Schedule 21 – 22 Gate and Concession Stand Procedures 23 Guest Speakers 17 Guidelines for

13

2. No student is sent home until his parents have been contacted or the situation is cleared with the office.

3. A daily record is kept of every student who has been in the health room during each day, recording the

date, time, reason for visit and results.. At the close of each day the nurse will have recorded, in the

SASI attendance atom, any hour that a student missed or hours following the student being picked up

to go home as ILL.

Administering of Medication by Members of the Teaching Staff

If a child needs to take medication during school hours, the parent should notify the school nurse of this. The

teacher may be asked by the nurse to remind the child when it is time for his medication. The school nurse will have all

student medications in her office.

There are a few selected instances when medication may save the child's life. In this kind of situation, it will be

necessary for the school nurse to keep the child's medication on hand at all times. If this is the case, the school nurse

must have written directions from the attending physician as to how and when medication should be administered. The

medication should be kept in the nurse's office or other location where it is accessible to those who may need to

administer the medicine at a time of emergency.

Under no circumstances, should aspirin or aspergum be given to children by a member of our staff. Many

children experience severe reactions to these. The school system is in no position to be responsible should a parent

decide to bring suit against the individual staff member for giving medication at the wrong time or the wrong dosage.

You can understand that it is our desire to be of assistance but in order to be helpful, it must be within the

understandings carefully drawn between the family, the school, and the attending physician.

The nurse is available to assist faculty in the planning and implementation of health curriculum, the school

nurse will assist in the following roles:

1. Capitalize on the "teaching moments" when students express a need and/or interest in learning more or

when the situation lends itself to teaching.

2. Participate in the planning of the district's health skills for Life and Substance Abuse Prevention

curriculum.

3. Serve as a consultant to classroom teachers in the preparation of their health lessons, assist in planning

specific content, and assist in selecting resource materials.

4. Serve as an in-service person for the faculty and school staff.

5. Participate in classroom presentations using learning objectives.

6. Act as a consultant or liaison with community persons and groups concerning substance abuse

prevention activities and presentations.

INVENTORY

Inventory cards will be filled out by the department at the time the purchase order is processed. Each fall

during teacher workweek, a printout of room inventory items will be distributed for updating purposes. This should be

checked to see if all new items purchased for the current year is listed, if items should be deleted, or moved to another

room. Each room should contain a detailed listing of items which were grouped under one number.

Computerized Information Technology (Novell-Delivered Applications)

A+ Tutoring. This allows faculty to directly request a tutor from the high school for specific hours needed. High

School students use this opportunity to accumulate 50 mentoring hours as partial requirement for the A+ scholarship.

Board Policies. The Camdenton R-III Board Handbook is online. Faculty and staff needing information concerning

School District policies should access this icon by using the following procedures: (a) Click on Adobe Reader (if not

already installed on your computer, (b) Click on Board Policy Icon, (c) All Board policies are listed according to letters

referenced in the handbook.

Career Ladder. This site has all the forms required for Career Ladder.

E-Mail. It is against Board policy and state law to use district resources to support or oppose a political issue. The use

not pay for items that have not been requisitioned.

Activity Accounts.

The secretary to the principal will process Purchase Orders for the activity fund. No organization should keep

money (regardless of its source) to make purchases or pay bills with cash. All organizational money must be deposited

in the activity fund and all obligations paid by check. Under no circumstances (regardless of its source) should money

be left in a classroom or other area of the building. All money is to be deposited daily.

Resale Accounts.

Inventory can be reflected in the balance.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS

When it is necessary for you to be absent, please call Jenelle Horton at 573-286-3828 by 6:30 a.m. or the

evening before. Competition for substitutes in our district is extremely keen. It is necessary to start early in order to

obtain the best substitute. Please give us as much advanced warning as possible if you plan to be gone on personal leave

or to teacher professional meetings. The Direct Dial to the Middle School is 346-9257.

You should have the substitute folder completed with all relevant materials and information inside the folder.

These materials should include bell schedule, class rosters (with instructions to send hourly attendance to the main

office), lunch schedule, etc.

Rate of Pay for Substitutes

Substitute teachers on a day-to-day assignment in either the elementary or secondary schools will be paid a

standard daily rate as fixed by the Board of Education. However, if a substitute teacher continues teaching for the same

teacher for ten (10) consecutive school days, the substitute will be placed on a beginning teacher salary scale for each

day taught beyond the first ten (10) days as long as the days are consecutive and uninterrupted. If it is necessary for the

substitute teacher to be absent due to his/her personal illness, the count for consecutive days will not be interrupted so

long as the number of days absent is three or less. A doctor's excuse must be provided. This illness absence will be

allowed for a maximum of three days with no pay for the missed days. Absences for other reasons or that exceed the

three (3) days allowed will result in the teacher having to requalify for the beginning teacher salary.

HALL DUTY If we are to maintain proper discipline, all teachers must be responsible for the discipline in the hall. This

refers to those areas near their rooms or to those situations that they observe when in other parts of the building.

All faculty are responsible for monitoring the hall during hourly passing periods and for five minutes after

school or until the halls are clear. Check the restroom of your gender each passing period.

requests for athletic events or field trips.

1. All requests must be submitted at least three days prior to the trip date.

2. All fields on the computer screen must be completed for the request to be considered. If you do not

know the exact date at the time of the submission of the request, put “TBA” in the field. Please enter

dates in the form mm/dd/yy.

3. A separate request must be completed for each trip

4. The request when submitted will be automatically sent to the building administrator for approval.

5. You will receive an e-mail confirmation when this request is approved by the Transportation

Department.

Activity Trip Rules.

The following rules have been established to improve our policies for activity trips:

1. The driver shall make sure that the interior and exterior of the bus he/she is taking is in a neat and

clean state before leaving for the trip.

2. The driver is responsible to take the safest and best route from Camdenton R-III Schools to the town in

which the activity takes place.

3. It is the responsibility of the sponsor/coach to know the directions to the destinations once they are in

the town. Both the sponsor and driver should work together.

4. The sponsor/coach is responsible for the behavior of the students during the trip. It is also the

sponsors’ responsibility that noise be kept to a minimum and when a large group is on the bus (35 to

40+ students) that the sponsor sit back in the middle of the bus for supervision, especially at night with

boys and girls on board.

5. The driver is responsible to make sure plastic bags are available for trash. It is the sponsor’s

responsibility to see that all the trash is picked up at the end of each trip. Many times this bus has to be

used on a route soon after the trip. The driver and sponsor should do a walk-through to make sure the

bus is clean. The driver is responsible for trash bags to be put in proper trash containers, and lids kept

closed on containers.

6. The driver is responsible for wearing clean, appropriate attire for the activity for which they are

driving. Clean and appropriate clothing should be taken for overnight trips.

7. The driver is responsible for being at the proper locations for trip pick-up and give ample loading time

(approximately 15 minutes). It is the responsibility of the sponsor to be prepared to load students and

equipment at the prescribed time and location.

By state law, it is the driver’s responsibility for making sure the rear emergency door is not blocked

and any type of supplies or equipment that might be needed for that activity DOES NOT BLOCK

AISLE. 8. The driver of any Camdenton R-III School District bus will drive in a careful and prudent manner, and

will exercise the highest degree of care in driving over all types of roads

GUEST SPEAKERS The names of potential guest speakers should be reported to the principal prior to the date the speaker is to

appear. This is to insure a discussion concerning any possible reservations regarding the use of a guest speaker prior to

inviting the individual. Before a teacher presents a speaker to the principal, he/she should be thoroughly checked out.

There should be at least two references for the speaker. One must have heard the presentation. Guest speakers should be

checked in through the office and receive a visitor’s pass.

CELL PHONES AND TELEPHONES The use of personal cell phones by school employees will be limited to non-instructional or scheduled off-duty

or break times only. Cell phones must be turned off at all other times unless instructed by their principal/supervisor. All

personal cell phones should be turned off during staff meetings.

Telephone messages or placement of telephone calls during class time are strongly discouraged. Only

telephone messages of an emergency, family nature, will be relayed while the class is in session. Other messages will be

relayed during class break or on e-mail.

BULLETINS Notice of events, announcements, and certain instruction to students should be placed in the bulletin. Please

submit items one day before the planned activity. Announcements will be posted to the teachers through e-mail. Faculty

will read the bulletin to the students during Lakertime. Bulletin items should be kept as precise and brief as possible.

They must pertain to school or to school-related activities.

STUDENT VISITORS Student visitors are discouraged. Any exceptions must be approved by the assistant principal.

LENGTH OF SCHOOL DAY In accordance with Board of Education policy, for consistency in the district a teacher’s work day will begin at

7:45 a.m. and will end at 3:30 p.m. Teachers should be available in their rooms between 8:00 and 8:20 a.m. to assist

students with assignments or special projects unless they are on hall duty. If it is necessary for a teacher to leave the

building during the school day, the principal must be given prior notice. The principal’s office will be open from 7:30

a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

TRANSPORTATION OF STUDENTS Missouri Attorney General’s Opinion No. 193-88, December 22, 1988

1. In a first or second class county or in a third or fourth class county whose

Board of Education has adopted written compliance with Section 302.272, RSMo

Supp. 1988, Section 167.242, RSMo Supp. 1988, exempts an individual

transporting four or fewer students in a privately owned automobile from being

licensed as a school bus operator or as a chauffeur while under contract

with a public school or the State Board of Education

2. There is no requirement under Section 167.242 that the operator be paid

compensation for the exemption to be applicable but the operator must be under

contract with the district.

3. In a first or second class county or in a third or fourth class county whose

Board of Education has adopted written compliance with Section 302.272,

Section 167.242 does not exempt an individual transporting four or fewer

students in an automobile owned by the school district from being licensed as a

school bus operator because the exemption applies only to automobiles which are

privately, not publicly, owned; therefore the operator would be required to

obtain a school bus operator’s permit.

9. Students need to be supervised until all transportation has arrived.

10. Appropriate footwear (socks, tennis shoes) must be worn for the gym floor.

11. Students must exhibit appropriate behavior. There should be no running, jumping, or sliding.

12. Any bodily contact while dancing should be appropriate. There should be no dirty dancing.

13. Common sense rule is always in effect.

PETTY CASH

Due to instructions from our auditors, the Middle School does not maintain a petty cash fund. Please do not

request office personnel to cash checks or conduct any other form of money transactions.

NEWS RELEASES

In order to inform our public and tell the story of our student accomplishments, news releases are strongly

encouraged. The central coordinator for the CMS newspaper and radio releases will be the principal who will then

submit the article to Mrs. Joi Dickemann, Community Relations Coordinator. Each faculty member is responsible for

preparing and submitting the actual article to Mrs. Dickemann. If pictures are submitted, the names of the individual in

the picture, the event, and the date of the event must be written on the back of the picture.

The faculty member should write the article with the understanding that the final copy may be edited for

newspaper or radio style. The article should include the “Who,” “When,” and “Where” information along with a few

explanatory or other pertinent remarks to give the story color.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

First Hour: Principal meets with students in gym. Counselors give out schedules.

Home Room Procedures:

1. Teachers are to call roll for their individual home rooms to be sure the right students

are in the correct home room. If you have a student whose name proves that they

should be in another home room, send the student to the correct home room

immediately. All students should have received a new schedule.

2. Discuss how to read the schedule.

3. Lunch schedules are not indicated on the student’s schedule. You will need to refer

to your list of teacher lunch schedules to help the student find his/her lunch time.

4. Student Handbooks will be included in each student’s first day packet. Inform the

students that they are to read the handbook thoroughly. Lack of knowledge about

anything in the handbook is not an excuse for ignoring school policy. Discuss items

you consider high priority items first, and what you consider less important next.

About this point in time, different teachers will be at different places in the process.

Expect to take approximately 30 to 45 minutes for student orientation.

5. Students should receive a packet of information to be taken home for their

parents to fill out and sign. All forms are included and the front of the packet

indicates which forms are mandatory and which are for their information only.

All packets will be collected by the homeroom teacher. Turn in to the principal’s office

ONLY when all

packets from your homeroom have been returned.

6. HAVE A GOOD DAY!

7. All teachers should leave their classroom at 3:23 p.m. and supervise the hallways

leading to the locker and bus area.

8. The following teachers are asked to help with the bus loading the first day of school.

Meet at the buses immediately after the bell rings at 3:23 p.m. Be prepared to help

students find the right bus.

school transportation must return on school transportation unless a parent or guardian requests in

person with the sponsor to assume the responsibility for the student's return after the activity is

complete. Parents must sign out the student or on a sign-out sheet available in the office. Students are

not allowed to ride home with other students' parents or guardians. Any exception to this rule must be

due to unusual circumstances and requested in writing and approved in advance of the activity by the

principal or assistant principal.

5. Students wishing to get on or off the participants’ bus as it passes their home on the way to or from an

activity may do so if the sponsor has advanced parental written permission and is approved and the

note signed by the principal(s).

6. Schedule for school-sponsored activities are to be approved by the administration prior to leaving on

the trip and all information concerning leaving times, stops and returning times provided to students

and their parents.

7. Sponsors of all activities and coaches are to supervise students in locker rooms and all buildings being

used for their activity until they are all out and doors locked.

8. Supervisors and coaches should be at activities prior to the time they tell their students to be there.

9. Plan your activities so that you will be finished at the same time each day. Most participants live out

of town and their parents need to know what time to pick them up. If you cancel a practice, please

notify all participants at least two (2) days ahead of time.

10. All doors, gates, and lights are to be secured by Middle School coaches and sponsors after use of

football, track and CMS gym facilities each time they are used.

11. Corridor passes are not to be used to students from study hall or classes to go to weight rooms, locker

rooms, track, football field or any other place unless accompanied by another teacher.

12. Keep all doors and gates locked during practices and during games to prevent loss of items, theft, etc.

Students should not be given keys to open doors, gates, etc.

13. It is against school policy for students to carry, smoke, or chew tobacco on school property. Therefore,

if we are to enforce this policy for students, we would like to ask the faculty and staff to set an example

in front of students and fans.

14. All equipment should be put away and stored property after use each day. Equipment left out is a

temptation for a possible accident which can result in your accountability in a liable situation.

15. Written reports will be prepared on all accidents occurring on school property or at a school-sponsored

activity. When the school nurse is not available, it is the responsibility of the coach or teacher/sponsor

to complete the standard student accident report form. The school nurse or the office has copies for

your use.

COMPLAINT PROCEDURES

The policies of the School District (Codes 505.10 and 1003.1) require that complaints be handled in an orderly

manner. In summary, these policies require that all complaints first go to the person about whom the complaint

concerns. Therefore, all complaints in the district should first go through communication channels at the building level

and not to the Superintendent or member/members of the Board of Education.

Any person having a complaint shall follow the steps outlined below:

Step 1: If the complaint or concern is in regard to a classroom situation or a teacher, then the first step is to contact the

building principals’ or administrator’s office to arrange a conference with the teacher.

Step 2: If the complaint or concern is about any other matter than a teacher or classroom situation, the matter shall first

be brought to the attention of the building level administrator or principal. Any matter taken up at Step 1 but

not resolved shall also be referred to the building level administrator or principal. Complaints at this level shall

be submitted in writing.

Step 3: All matters not resolved at Step 2 shall be referred to the appropriate central office administrator,

Superintendent of Schools, or Assistant Superintendent for review of the facts and resolution.

Step 4: All matters not resolved at the Superintendent level may be appealed to the Board of Education. The Board of

Education will be the final judicial authority on all matters concerning district policy, policy interpretation,
