OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF HERITAGE RIDGE SOUTH PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION JUNE 2016 AT HERITAGE RIDGE SOUTH CAMBRIDGE Mr. Meyer Goes to Washington By his Daughter, Christine Elder On Saturday, April 16, 2016, while many of his neighbors were sleeping, Glen Meyer, long time resident of the Cambridge Community, was about to embark on an adventure of a lifetime! He, along with 81 other United States veterans (79 WWII veterans, 2 Korean War veterans and one WWII and Korean War veteran), 82 guardians (one for each veteran) and a team of medical professionals boarded a plane at Palm Beach International Airport! Destination: Washington, D.C.! These men and women were being given the opportunity to visit the memorials which were erected in our nation's capital to pay tribute to all of the service people who have either given their lives, or were willing to give their lives for our country. Although it took family and friends (and possibly the diagno- sis of an inoperable brain tumor) a long time to convince him that he was deserving of this honor, Glen Meyer (my Dad), final- ly agreed to go on the Honor Flight to Washington DC. Dad is a very humble man, who has lived in the Cambridge Community for almost 30 years. He served in the military in the Army Air Corps for three years and was trained to be a bom- badier. He struggled with the idea of killing someone, although he didn't consider himself to be a conscientious objector. He was brought up being taught "Thou shall not kill." Yet in his ar- my training, he was told, "Kill, or be killed!” I'm sure he prayed about it a lot and as it turned out, he nev- er had to drop a bomb. He was sent to Nuthampstead, England as a replacement crew for several planes that were lost mysteri- ously. His plane was ready to fly their mission. Engines were running, plane about to take off when they were told to shut down the engines. The land troops had taken over the target and the mission was canceled. The same thing happened the next day and on the third day, the war was over in England. I tell you all of this to explain why my Dad didn't feel worthy of being honored. He felt that there were so many who went overseas and never came back. To him, they are the he- roes. Yes, they are heroes, indeed! But so are the many men and women who were willing to put their lives on hold at home in order to defend our freedoms! The trip to Washington was such a wonderful experience for the veterans. They left Palm Beach International Airport around 6:30AM. They had beautiful weather while they were in Washington. They visited Arlington Cemetery, the changing of the guards, the World War II memorial, as well as the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam War Me- morial and the Iwo Jima Memorial. While at the WWII Memorial, my Dad was surprised by one of his grand- sons and great granddaughters who flew in from Maine in their private plane to surprise him! They were taken by bus to a Knights of Columbus lodge for lunch provided by the K of C. At 4:30PM, they headed back to the airport in Washington for the flight home. On the flight home, they were surprised by a "Mail Call". Friends and family had been previously en- couraged to send their veteran cards, letters, pictures, etc., much like they would have gotten while they were in the service. I am told that Dad had the biggest envelope filled with well-wishes. Seventy-five in all!!! When they arrived back at PBI, there was a crowd of hundreds of family, friends, and community members who were there to welcome them home and show their thanks and support. Dad was surprised one more time when he saw his granddaughter and her four children who had driven down from Alabama to welcome him home in the front lines of the crowd! When asked what his favorite part of the trip was, Dad tells everyone it was seeing so many people come out in support at the various venues, young and old alike. He was especially happy and proud that so many young people were apparently being taught to respect and hon- or these veterans, and that they were being taught the history of our country and the price that was paid by so many to keep our freedoms! I can't say enough about the Honor Flight Organiza- tion and the top notch job they did in making all of this possible. They are a 100% non-profit organiza- tion. These trips are made possible through donations and fundraisers. It is at no cost to the veterans. The wonderful people who volunteer to go along as guardians for the veterans pay $400.00 each, which covers their expenses as well as the expense of their assigned veter- an. I would also like to recognize and thank Mrs. Bonnie Continued on page 4…..Honor Flight

Mr. Meyer Goes to Washington

By his Daughter, Christine Elder

On Saturday, April 16, 2016, while many of his neighbors were sleeping, Glen Meyer, long time resident of the Cambridge Community, was about to embark on an adventure of a lifetime! He, along with 81 other United States

veterans (79 WWII veterans, 2 Korean War veterans and one WWII and Korean War veteran), 82 guardians (one for each veteran) and a team of medical professionals boarded a plane at Palm Beach International Airport! Destination: Washington, D.C.! These men and women were being given the opportunity to visit the memorials which were erected in our nation's capital to pay tribute to all of the service people who have either given their lives, or were willing to give their lives for our country. We all like to have a good time with friends and neighbors gathering at the swimming pool. Yeah, we bring a cooler with some wine or some beer to enjoy while we “party”. BUT according to the posted rules and regulations of the swimming pool, NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES are allowed. Now, the Board has been lenient and turned it’s head to the fact that people are bringing in alcoholic bever-ages to the pool area. Unfortunately, there are one or two persons that have to abuse the leniency and are going to ruin it for everyone. There have been complaints about profane language. There have been falls due to excessive drinking. Folks, listen up, unless you want the Board to start enforcing the rules re-garding NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAG-

ES, we suggest that you refrain from over-use of any prohibited substances. Any more complaints and we will disable the access cards to the swim-ming pool for those in violation. Hopefully, the couple of guilty per-sons will comply and not ruin it for everyone. It has also been brought to our atten-tion the difficulty of finding a home in Cambridge at night if there are no house numbers on the unit itself. Emergency vehicles will also have a problem finding your residence at night. Please put reflective numbers on the house, light post or the carport post.

Bon Appetite'

There was a man driving around claiming that he is opening a store somewhere off A1A and wants to show you the various things he has to offer. If you allow him in your home and take the time to see what he has, he will give you a American Flag free of charge. Sounds nice doesn’t it. All you have to do is look at the things he has in a suitcase that is in his car. If you say OK he signals to the man in the car to bring the case in. Now you have 2 strange men in your home. Something similar to this happened several years ago but they were offering a small throw rug instead of a flag. Their plan is for one to keep your attention while the other roams around your home looking for small valua-bles that he can steal. Just be aware that it is that time of the year when these crooks try everything to get your money. Another thing that needs to be mentioned is that resi-dents have seen Bufo frogs on their property. Pet lov-ers have to be warned that those frogs are deadly to animals. You can read about them online and google ‘Bufo Toads’ then click on one of the articles found. Coral snakes have also been spotted. Remember “Red touch Yellow – kill the fellow” “Red touch Black – friend of Jack”. Coral snakes also have a black snout. Stay Safe

PREVENTING SHINGLES

Two vaccines are available to help reduce the risk of shingles. If you have never had chicken-pox and are younger than 60, you can get the var-icella vaccine (Varivax). Though the vaccine doesn’t guarantee you won’t get chickenpox or shingles, it can reduce the likelihood of complica-tions and reduce the severity of the disease. One dose of the shingles (zoster) vaccine (Zostavax) is approved for those age 50 and old-er, whether or not they recall having chickenpox. Like the chickenpox vaccine, the shingles vaccine doesn’t guarantee you won’t get shingles. But if you do get shingles, the vaccine will likely reduce the course and severity of the disease and reduce your risk of postherpetic neuralgia. Even if you’ve had shingles before, the vaccine can help prevent another occurrence of the disease. The shingles vaccine is intended as a preven-tive strategy, not as a treatment for people who have the disease. The vaccine contains live virus and isn’t given to people who have weakened im-mune systems.
