Caloundra Highlights
Term 3 - Week 22 - Friday 20th July 2018
Welcome to the first newsletter for Term 3.
This term we have welcomed 33 new International students and next week see the first of our study tour students arrive from Japan. We also started the term with a student enrolment higher than at the start of the year (1158 students) so the school is certainly busy. One of our targets is to have student attendance at 93% so I encourage you to ensure that your child is at school. If they are at school they are learning, if they are learning then they are succeeding!
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS Reminder that the Parent Teacher interviews will be held Tuesday 24th July in the
Student Centre from 3.20 to 5.00pm. End of Semester One report cards were sent home on Thursday with details on how to book an appointment with a teacher for a meeting. Please contact the office for further information.
YEAR 10 into 11 INFORMATION EVENING
Following the Parent/Teacher interviews, an information evening for Year 10 students entering Year 11 in 2019, will be held in the Resource Centre from 5.30pm. Parents and students are welcome to view subject area and other organisation displays in the Student Centre and we encourage you to ask questions. With the changes to our senior system happening in 2019, we hope to see all of our Year 10 parents attend.
CERTIFICATE III in AVIATION INFORMATION SESSION If you have a child currently in Year 10 or 11 and is interested in Aviation, there will be a
Certificate II in Aviation information session held by the Registered Training Organisation and CSHS staff on 24th July at 5.00 to 5.30pm in the Resource Centre before the Year 10 into 11 Information session.
CHINESE This term we have welcomed Ms Furuno who has commenced teaching Chinese as a
subject to our Year 7 students. We are very excited to be able to add Chinese as a language for our students to study.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL After having to cancel the carnival at the end of last term, students today participated in
our Athletics Carnival. Even though we had to hold lunchtime events as the carnival was only one day, students had a wonderful time. We started the day with an lap of the oval in support of White Ribbon and thankyou to Bendigo Bank for sponsoring prizes for the walk. The Student Council ran a very successful sausage sizzle as well as running the inaugural colour run to raise funds (we had many brightly coloured students) The overall House winner will be announced later.
RESOURCE CENTRE
Many of our Year 7, 8 and 9 classes are engaged with the Accelerated Reader Program as a component of their English program with adventure titles and graphic novels being the most popular. We would also like to thank David Morgan an ex Caloundra High student who each year donates books to our non-fiction collection at the Anzac Day Commemoration. Seventeen of our students from across all year levels participated in the Voices on the Coast festival Thursday 19th July. This festival was held at the University of the Sunshine Coast and students attended talks and workshops hosted by well-known authors and illustrators. Remember students can join the study/homework club on Wednesday mornings at 8.00am at the Resource Centre. This is a time when the Teacher-Librarian is available to assist with homework, sort out computer issues and help with printing. We encourage all students at Caloundra SHS to find their treasure in our wonderful Resource Centre.
