Parish News

Dear Parishioners, Being tempted is not a sin. That’s an important distinction that we can sometimes forget. Every so often in the confessional, a person will come in and confess that they have been struggling with the temptation to sin. When I ask them if they gave in to the temptation, they say “no”, but they feel guilty for even having been tempted. But we see from this weekend’s gospel that Jesus himself was tempted. He may not have suffered from concupiscence like we do, he did not have an internal struggle with a fallen human nature like we do because of original sin, but he was tempted, nonetheless. Temptation is inevitable in the world we live in, but we can avoid committing sin if we resist these temptations and choose instead to be virtuous and holy. At the same time, we do bear the responsibility of avoiding temptation as much as possible. Just because we cannot avoid all temptation does not mean we should invite every temptation. I occasionally hear in the confessional someone expressing frustration with God because He does not take away a particular temptation, especially a habitual one. “I don’t want to commit this sin and I’ve asked God to remove it from me, but He doesn’t.” When I dig a little deeper, there is almost always more the person could be doing to avoid the temptation to sin. “You want to stop committing sins of unchastity, but you don’t put a filter on your computer, cancel that magazine subscription, stop watching certain TV shows. You want to stop gossiping, but you call your friend every day with whom you gossip, and you don’t bring up to her that you wish you could stop.” We cannot willfully expose ourselves to sinful thoughts and ideas, and then plead innocence when the temptations pop into our minds, complaining that God doesn’t remove them from us. If we knowingly surround ourselves with temptations, we will eventually give in to them. It is hard enough to grow in holiness, we shouldn’t help the enemy come up with ways to hold us back. The last thing the enemy wants us to do is turn our attention to our holiness and to the ways he tempts us from progressing. He would love for us to just not think about it. So that’s exactly what we should think about. The season of Lent especially is a time for us to examine our lives and ask ourselves: what are the temptations that I am faced with? Once we’ve identified how we are tempted, we should then ask: am I inviting these temptations or am I doing what I can to avoid them? That is a good place to start on our growth in holiness. –Fr. Do you ever think about how difficult it must have been for Jesus to come into Galilee, knowing that John had just been arrested for teaching the same message that Jesus was proclaiming. It must have taken great love and trust for Jesus to do what the Father had sent Him here on earth to do. In the same way, following a life of stewardship takes great love and trust from us. We must be willing to surrender completely to God, trusting that God will always give us all that we need to fulfill His plan for us. If you are not already participating in our 2015 Stewardship efforts to grow in discipleship and be good stewards of the gifts that God has shared with us, Talent Directories and forms are available in the back of the church and in the parish office.

Notre Dame Academy has been buzzing with fun and excitement during these cold winter months. Students enjoyed celebrating the strong faith and academic rigor Catholic Schools bring during Catholic School week at the end of January. Basketball season has been in full swing and the season will wrap up the first week of March Elementary students have been participating in Kids Yoga after school as well as Mad Science

before school. Como Zoo has been presenting fun Science activities to elementary grades on Fridays and have been greeted with

some fun animal visitors STAR testing/assessment has been implemented in all grades POPS concert was a full house on February 12 Students are preparing for The Junior High School Play – The Music Man, which will be on March 12- 15. Get your

EL SIGNIFICADO DE NUESTRO BAUTISMO Cuaresma es la época del año que dedicamos a escu-driñar nuestras vidas a la luz de nuestro Bautismo en la muerte y resurrección de Jesús. Las lecturas de hoy son como un catecismo abreviado de lo que nuestras vidas de bautizados significan. Tal como Noé pasó por las aguas del diluvio a una alianza con Dios, así también nosotros entramos en una alianza, una relación con Dios prometida por nuestro Bautismo. El salmo nos recuerda que si real-mente vivimos la alianza, el modo de vida que Dios quie-re que vivamos no va a ser una carga, sino una fuente de amor y verdad. La carta de Pedro ofrece una explicación de lo que significa nuestro bautismo: es una plegaria a Dios pidiendo una buena conciencia. ¿Cómo obtenemos esta buena conciencia? Las palabras que Jesús proclama justo después de su tentación nos señala el camino: “Arrepiéntanse y crean en el Evangelio”. Podría ser un buen ejercicio espiritual mantener estas lecturas a nuestro alcance durante todo el tiempo de Cuaresma, un medio para ayudarnos a volver a una vida vivida según nuestras promesas bautismales. Cuarenta no puede tomarse al pie de la letra, ya que en las culturas semitas de siglos pasados cuarenta significaba “un largo periodo de tiempo”. Los judíos, cristianos y mu-sulmanes provenimos de esas culturas antiguas y es por eso que para nosotros el número cuarenta es muy impor-tante. Algunos ejemplos bíblicos: El diluvió duró cuarenta días. Moisés habló con Dios durante cuarenta días en el Sinaí. El pueblo de Israel pasó cuarenta años en el desier-to purificándose de sus pecados. Jesús ayunó cuarenta días en el desierto antes de iniciar su ministerio público. El profeta Mahoma tenía cuarenta años cuando Dios lo lla-mó; asimismo, según el Islam, Dios creó a Adán en cuaren-ta días, y la persona que desea sabiduría necesita ayu-nar cuarenta días. No se sabe de dónde viene esta conexión del número cuarenta con la religión. Algunos astrónomos piensan que es debido al planeta Venus.
