Building up a phonesystem

You can use up to six handsets on eachDiverse base station, up to four basestations can be used with each Diversehandset. Although this user guideapplies to both single and multiplehandset systems, some functionsdescribed in this guide apply only toDiverse 3010 Classic phones with morethan one handset connected.

General

For the handset use only approved nickel-cadmium (NiCad) or nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) rechargeablebatteries. Never use other batteries orconventional alkaline batteries. Theycould lead to a short circuit or destroythe battery casing. Recommendedbatteries should have a power rating ofat least 600mAh 1.2V. Batteries areavailable from the Diverse Helpline08457 908070.

Only use the power supply includedwith the product. Using anunauthorised power supply willinvalidate your guarantee and maydamage the telephone. The itemnumber for the mains power supply isC39 280-Z4-C174/..-C67.

If Keyguard is active, it is still possibleto make emergency calls to 999 and112.

Do not open the handset or basestation. This could expose you to highvoltages or other risks. Contact thehelpline for all repairs.

Radio signals transmitted between thehandset and base may causeinterference to hearing aids.

This product should not be used nearemergency/intensive care medical

equipment and should not be used bypeople with pacemakers.

Never dispose of batteries in a fire.There is a serious risk of explosionand/or the release of highly toxicchemicals.

Cleaning

Simply clean the handset and basestation with a damp (not wet) cloth, oran antistatic wipe. Never use householdpolish as this will damage the product.Never use a dry cloth as this may causea static shock.

Environmental

Do not expose to direct sunlight.The product may heat up when thebatteries are being recharged. This isnormal. However, we recommend thatyou do not place the product onantique/veneered wood to avoiddamage.

Do not stand your product on carpetsor other surfaces which generatefibres, or place it in locationspreventing free flow of air over it’ssurfaces.

Do not submerge any part of yourproduct in water and do not use it indamp or humid conditions, such as inbathrooms.

1 Connect the power cable

Plug the power cable into the powersocket on the underside of yourDiverse 3010 Classic. Take care thatthe telephone line cord and powercable plugs are connected to thecorrect sockets. Incorrect placementcould damage the station.

Follow these steps to get your Diverse 3010 Classic ready for use.

Note

Plan where you will put your Diverse3010 Classic. It should be within twometres of a power socket and thephone socket.

Note

Use only the power adaptor C39 280-Z4-C174/..–C67 with yourDiverse 3010 Classic.

2 Plug the 3 pin adaptorinto a mains power socketand switch on

3 Install the rechargeablebatteries in the handset

The handset uses the two AA size nickelcadmium (NiCad) batteries, which aresupplied. To install them, insert thebatteries as indicated on the inside of thebattery compartment (or in the pictureon the next page) and slide the batterycompartment cover shut.

Your handset is already “registered”to the Diverse 3010 Classic basestation.

Battery display when inserting or replacing a battery

When you replace the handset batterieswith ones that have been fully charged,the battery indicator will not show fulluntil the next charge cycle has beencompleted. Charge the handset untilthe batteries register full again. Fromthen on the display will be correct.

Battery performance

After charging your Diverse 3010Classic for the first time, subsequentcharging time for the handset batteriesis approximately 4-5 hours. Batteries andcase may become warm during charging.This is normal.

Note

Under ideal conditions, the handsetbatteries should give about 10 hourstalktime or 100 hours standby on asingle charge. However, new NiCadbatteries do not reach their full capacityuntil they have been in normal use for several days.

Please note that the lifespan of NiCadrechargeable batteries depends on howheavily they are used. However, overtime, their capacity to recharge willbegin to diminish and they willeventually need replacing.

Slide battery cover down and lift off.

The battery compartment cover may befound in the packaging with the batteries.

4 Fit the handset belt clip

Fit the belt clip onto the back of thehandset.

WARNING

It is recommended that the line cordis not connected until the handset isfully charged. This will prevent therisk of the phone being answered priorto the batteries being fully chargedand therefore not achieving theiroptimum capacity.

Note

If you go out of range of a base stationfor a long time while your handset isswitched ON, it may take more than20 minutes to ‘find’ the base stationagain when you come back withinrange. However, by simply switchingthe handset OFF for a moment, thenON again, it will find the base stationwithin a few seconds.

If flashes continuously

It means the handset is either out ofrange or is not registered with thebase station. To register, follow thesteps on page 43. All additionalhandsets you purchase will need to beindividually registered with the basestation before they will work on theDiverse 3010 Classic.

The may also flash after a powerfailure. Provided the handset has beenregistered with the base the willstop flashing after a while indicatingthe handset has automatically re-registered to the base station. If itcontinues to flash, re-register thehandset to the base station.

Battery low warning

An LCD on the handset display showsthe current state of the charge. Whenthe batteries are almost flat a beepsounds and the display shows the emptybattery symbol. Displays showing thevarious states of charge are shownbelow:

To make an external call

Ensure the handset isswitched ON.

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton. You will hear the dialtone.

Dial the number. The phonecalls the number and thedisplay shows the number youhave dialled.

Press and hold the # buttonuntil the display shows:

The keypad is now locked andyou cannot dial out. Incomingcalls can be answered asnormal by pressing theGREEN PHONE button.

Press and hold the # buttonuntil the display returns tostandby. The keypad is nowunlocked.

Using your Diverse 3010ClassicOn and Off modes

To switch the handset on and off

You can normally leave yourhandset on 24 hours a day.However, if you need to switchit off:

Press and hold the REDPHONE button down for about1 second. You hear a long beepand the screen goes blank.

To switch it back on, press andhold down the RED PHONEagain. You hear a long beep andthe display returns to standby.

To switch the keypad lock onand off

You can lock the keypad sothat it cannot be usedaccidentally while carrying itaround.

Making and receiving calls

To end a call

Press the RED PHONE button.

To receive an external call

When the phone rings thedisplay flashes EXT.

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton on the handset andspeak.

Or

If the handset is on the basestation or charging station,simply lift it up and speak. Youdo not need to press theGREEN PHONE button.

Alternatively, you can enterthe phone number you wantfirst, check that it is correct,and then press the GREENPHONE button to dial.

Note

If another handset is already beingused to make an external call, yourhandset will display ‘–––’ flashing andyou will hear the internal ‘busy’ signal.

Note

The default setting is for an immediateconnection to callers when lifting thehandset from its base station orcharger. This is called Auto Talk. Itcan be deactivated so that you alwayshave to press the GREEN PHONEbutton to answer a call. See page 36.

Caller Display/Call Waiting

The Diverse 3010 Classic can let youknow who’s calling before you answerthe telephone.

With BT’s Caller Display and CallWaiting services, your Diverse basestation receives caller information whichis transmitted over the BT network, formore information see page 22.

To redial the last externalnumber

Press the button. Displayshows the last number dialled.

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton. The number is dialled.

Press the RED PHONE buttonto end the call.

To redial any of the last 5external numbers

Press the button. Displayshows the last number dialled.

Press the MEMORY or SETbuttons under to scrollthrough the last 5 numbers.

To delete the redial memory

All five numbers will bedeleted.

Press the SET button.

Enter the handset PIN(original setting 0000. To change it see page 26).

Call timer

Your Diverse 3010 Classic automaticallytimes the duration of all outgoingexternal calls. The handset displayshows the call duration both duringyour call and for a few seconds after itis completed.

Making and transferringcalls between handsets

If you have multiple handsetsregistered with the base, the Diverse3010 Classic enables two handsets totalk to each other on an internal‘intercom’ call, while a third handsetcan be on an external call.

To page a handset from thebase station

To locate handsets that areaway from the base station.

Press the PAGE button on the base.

All handsets registered withthe base will ring for 30seconds.

To stop paging press the PAGE button again.

Or

Press the GREEN PHONEbutton on the handset.

If you have additional handsets,you can make internal intercomcalls between the handsets.

Secrecy

You can switch off the handsetmicrophone so that your callercannot hear you while you talkto someone else in the room.

When ready, you can switchthe microphone back on.

During a call:

Press the INT button to switchthe microphone off. Yourcaller will hear a melody.Display shows EXT (flashing)and INT.

Press the RECALL button tospeak to your caller again.

To make an internal intercomcall to another handset

Press the INT button. Displayshows your handset number.

Enter the number of thehandset you want to call e.g. 2.The handset will ring.

To end the call, press the REDPHONE button, or replace thehandset on the base.

To put an outside caller onhold and speak to anotherinternal handset

Press the INT button. You hearthe internal dial tone and youroutside caller is put on hold.Your caller will hear ‘music on-hold’.

Press the handset number youwant, 1-6. When the handsetanswers, you can talk withoutyour outside caller hearing.

Press the RECALL button toend the internal call and speakto your outside caller.

To make an internal call to all handsets

You can call all handsetsregistered to a base station atthe same time.

Press the INT button.

Press the ✱ button. Displayshows all available handsets. If no other handsets areavailable, you hear theengaged tone. The firsthandset to answer will take the call.

Press the RED PHONE buttonto end the call.

To receive an internal call

When the handset rings, thedisplay flashes INT plus thenumber of the handset callingyou.

Either press the GREENPHONE button, or simply liftthe handset off the base stationto receive the call.

Note

If all available handsets are engagedon an internal call and an externalcall arrives, a ‘call waiting’ signal isgiven. To take the call, either replacethe handset on the base, or press theRED PHONE button. You can accept the new call when you hear the phone ring.

To enable another handset to ‘listen in’ on your conversation

If you want another person tohear your call, you can letthem listen in on anotherhandset registered to the samebase station.

Setting up:

Once connected to your caller:

Press the INT button. Yourcaller is put on hold.

Enter the number 1-6 of thehandset you want.

When the call is answeredpress the SET button.

Press the RECALL button. You can speak to your externalcaller again and the otherhandset can now listen to yourconversation.

To transfer an external callbetween handsets

If you are in a conversationwith an outside caller and wantto transfer the call to anotherhandset.

Press the INT button. Displayshows EXT INT plus yourhandset number.

The caller hears music onhold.

Enter the number of thehandset to which you wish totransfer the call.

When the handset isanswered, you can talk to theother handset without theoutside caller hearing.

To transfer the call press theRED PHONE button, or replaceyour handset on its base.

Or

To reconnect to your outsidecaller:

Press the RECALL button.

You can continue talking toyour caller as normal.

The other handset user canstop listening in at any timeeither by pressing the REDPHONE button on theirhandset or by replacing it onthe base station or charger.

Using the memory tostore and dial numbers

Your Diverse 3010 Classic handset canstore 10 phone numbers, each up to 22 digits long, which can then be speeddialled. Stored numbers can includesettings made with the ✱ and #buttons. You can also enter a Pause.(See pages 40-42, ‘Using your Diverse3010 Classic with a switchboard’.)

Quick call transfer

After dialling the other handset, youcan immediately press the RED PHONEbutton, or replace the handset on thebase and the call will be transferredstraight through. If the other handsetis already engaged, or does not answerthe call within 30 seconds, the callwill be returned to your handset.

To store a number in thememory

The handset must be switchedon.

Press the SET button.

Press the MEMORY button.

Press a digit 0-9. This selectsthe memory location underwhich you want the numberstored. Display shows thememory location you havechosen.

Press the OK ( ) button.

Enter the phone number youwant to store.

Press the OK ( ) button toconfirm. You hear aconfirmation beep.

Using Caller Display andCall WaitingBT’s Caller Display andCall Waiting

If you subscribe to Caller Display youcan see who is calling you (on yourhandset display). If you are on a calland you also subscribe to a Call Waitingservice, the second incoming callnumber will appear on the handsetdisplay and you will hear an intermittentbeep through the handset. This is to alertyou to another caller waiting to speakto you.

With BT’s Caller Display and CallWaiting service, your Diverse basestation receives caller informationwhich is transmitted over the BTnetwork. This includes the date andtime of the call.

If you are using the Classic handset,the screen shows the caller’s number(if it has been sent) when the phonerings. With the Executive handset if youhave stored a name to go with thenumber in your handset directory, thename will be displayed instead.

As a digital phone system, your Diverse3010 Classic provides excellent securityagainst others ‘listening in’ to yourcalls. You can also prevent unauthoriseduse of the handset(s). To do this youneed to know the PIN numbers.

The standard setting for both the basestation PIN and handset PIN is 0000. If you do not wish to change either, youcan use this number for all code andPIN related functions. Please be awarethat anyone with access to the basestation PIN (and this user guide) hasthe potential to change system settings.

If you change your handset PIN, keep a record of the new number in the boxprovided at the front of this user guide.

To change the Diverse 3010Classic base station PIN code

This protects your settings andhelps prevent unauthorisedhandsets using your system.

Call barring and Call enabling

You can bar specific numbers, e.g. allinternational calls by barring theinternational dial code 00.

Enabling

You can also specifically set a handsetso that it can only dial certain numbers.

Call barring affects all handsetsregistered to the base station.

If a barred number is dialled, the phonehangs up automatically and the barrednumber is displayed.

You can store up to five numbers aseither barred or specifically enabledphone numbers. These can be pre-fixnumbers, eg 00 for all internationalcalls. Incoming calls are not affected.

Using multiple basestations and handsets

When the handset has been registered at two or more base stations(see ‘To register a handset’ page 43),you can choose between three options:

You can use up to six handsets on eachDiverse base station and up to fourbase stations with your Diverse handset.

The handset supplied with your firstbase station is already registered ashandset 1 and your first base station isbase station 1.

It is possible to build your Diverse 3010Classic into a much larger phonesystem with the addition of up to 3extra base stations.

When planning to use a handset atmore than one base station, it isrecommended that you:

• Assign a number to each base station,from 1 to 4.

• Number each handset (1 to 6)registered at each base station.

• Register the handsets at base station 2 (and 3 and 4 if used) in thesame order as used for base station 1.

• Activate the display of the base station.Numbers on each handset, as shownon page 43.

If you move out of range of the displayedbase station, and within range ofanother base station, your radio linkwill be automatically set up (providedyour handset has been registered withthe new base station.)If, however, you move out of range ofthe displayed base station, and withinrange of another base station duringa call you will lose your call connection.

The handset display shows you if thehandset is located within range of a registered base station. If the symbol flashes continuously, it meansthe handset is not within range of aregistered base station. If the symbolis not flashing, you are in range.

To set your handset to prioritybase station selection

This setting tells your handsetto search for a specified basesignal for 30 seconds. If thesignal cannot be found, thehandset reverts to automaticselection of the base with thebest signal. This setting isrecommended where there isan overlap between two orthree base stations.

Enter the priority base stationnumber twice, eg. 1, 1.

Technical information

How many telephones can you have?

All items of telephone equipment have a Ringer Equivalence Number (REN),which is used to calculate the numberof items that may be connected to anyone telephone line. The Diverse 3010Classic has a REN of 1. Any otherinstrument provided by BT may beassumed to have a REN of 1 unlessstated otherwise. A total REN of 4 isallowed. (For example: if Diverse 3010Classic is used in conjunction withthree extension telephones, each with aREN of 1, the total REN is 4.)

Only use approved power supply itemcode: C39 280-Z4-C174/..-C67.

This product is intended for use withinthe UK for connection to the publictelephone network and compatibleswitchboards.

Switchboard compatibility

Generally this telephone may beconnected to switchboards whichsupport tone signalling and timed breakrecall. In the event of any difficultiesplease consult your switchboard serviceprovider.

Switchboard external lineaccess code

When you connect your telephone to a switchboard, you can set theswitchboard’s external line access codeso that when you make an external callusing the handset directory or redial listthe code is automatically dialled beforethe number. See main user guide fordetails, page 40.

Your Diverse 3010 Classic has beendesigned to be easy to use. If youshould experience a problem, pleasecheck the following points.

Emergency calls

The emergency services can becontacted in the UK by dialling 999,or 112 in any country that is amember of the European Community.

Note

If your Diverse 3010 Classic isconnected to a switchboard, you mayhave to dial an access number before112 or 999 to contact the emergencyservices. (See page 41). Someswitchboards cannot dial out during a power failure.

N.B.: 9 999 cannot be dialled frombehind a switchboard when callbarring is set.

Replacing handset batteries

After a time, you may find that thehandset batteries are running out ofcharge more quickly. This is a standardsign of wear and the batteries will needreplacing.

Note

Use only AA size, approvedrechargeable batteries in the handset.Any other types may cause irreparabledamage. Never use conventionalalkaline batteries.

For a list of approved batteries, seepage 8. Batteries are available fromthe Diverse Helpline on 08457908070 or your local BT shop.

No display appearsIs the handset switched on? The battery may be flat or dead.Recharge or replace the battery.

No dial toneIs the telephone line cord plugged intothe phone socket and the base station?

If other handsets are registered on thebase, the outside line may already be inuse. Wait until the call is finished andtry again.

The symbol is flashing or youcannot link up with the base stationIs the handset registered with the basestation? To register the handset, seepage 43. Is the power cable connectedat the base and the power switched onat the wall socket?

If you press the PHONE button whilst is flashing, you will hear four short

beeps from the handset.

Note

If you go out of range of a base stationfor a long time while your handset isswitched ON, it may take more than20 minutes to ‘find’ the base stationagain when you come back withinrange. However, by simply switchingthe handset OFF for a moment, andthen ON again, it will find the basestation within a few seconds.

The base station or handset does not ringThe ringer volume may be set too low,or switched off at the base station. To adjust the ringer volume at thehandset or base station, see pages 32 or 33 respectively.

Is the telephone line cord connectedcorrectly? See page 11.

Can’t get through, even though adialling tone can be heardYou may be set to the wrong signallingmethod. To change between TONE and PULSE dialling, see ‘Connected to a switchboard’, page 40.

Handset beepsAre the handset batteries low? You willhear a beep every 30 seconds.

If is flashing?You will hear four short beeps whenyou press the PHONE button. Check youare still in range of your base station.

Buzzing noise on myRadio/TV/Answering Machine/PCDiverse is too close and is causinginterference. Move it further away.
