Disciples Nights
Are you in your 20s or 30s? Are you a student or working, married or single, with or without children? If so, i.d.9:16 might be just what you are looking for. It is a wonderful way to meet other young adults in the same stage of life. Come Sep-
tember, we will be beginning a new initiative in the diocese called i.d.9:16 through Renewal Ministries in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The monthly gatherings which are called “Disciples’ Nights” are intended to help young adults in their 20s and 30s grow in their faith and be active members in their respective parishes. The “Disciples’ Nights” will be held on the first Thursday of each month starting September 6, at St. Michael’s Parish, 511 Cheapside St, London. Each evening will begin with Mass at 6:15 (Patrick Beneteau, Vocations Director for our diocese will preside) followed by the sharing of a meal and drinks at 7:00, and a live streamed talk and small group discussions at 8:00. The evening will go until 9:30. Check us out on Facebook at i.d.9:16 London. Nursing babies are most welcome! The cost of dinner and talk is $10 with an RSVP, $12 without an RSVP, $5 if coming for talk only. Please RSVP no later than Sunday, September 2nd via Facebook event or email ([email protected]). If you do not RSVP by Sunday, September 2, you will not be on the RSVP list. There will also be alcoholic beverages sold for $2 each. Our September Disciples' Night will feature a talk by Fr. Burke Masters who is the chaplain for the Chicago Cubs professional base-ball team and the Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Joliet. A former D1 baseball star, Fr. Burke has been around tremendous tal-ent and accomplishment, but something was missing until he met the Lord. His story of coming to faith and discerning his vocation will inspire us and practically help us examine our own goals and priori-ties as we try to grow as disciples.

People Seeking Asylum and Refuge in
Canada
There has been a tragic rise in the number of families and indi-viduals migrating to new countries, including Canada. As a result of poverty, war, exploitation, abuse, and environmental degradation in their own country, these people are forced to leave their homes and face great uncertainty for their future and that of their children. We have become more aware of their needs as more families and individ-uals arrive here. Although Canadians debate how exactly we should respond, we, following the example of Jesus, must respond to their the needs for asylum, refuge, and hospitality. The Citizens for Public Justice document, “Reclaiming Protection: Advocating for an end to the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement” offers us an oppor-tunity to learn more (see), reflect (judge) and respond (act). To learn more please visit www.cpj.ca.

UPDATE: Canadian Conference of Cath-
olic Bishops Submission to Health Cana-
da on Palliative Care
The CCCB has sent its submission to Health Canada concerning its solicited consultation on developing a national strategy for palliative care. The submission comprises three items: an introductory letter by the CCCB President; a list of resources used to develop the submission; the submission itself. While responding to 10 spe-
cific questions asked by the Health Canada, the Conference’s submis-sion emphasized the following: the importance of the spiritual care dimension, and, that palliative care is not to include euthanasia or assisted suicide. This latter aspect is particularly important as Health Canada, in its consultation, is asking for feedback on what the defini-tion of “palliative care” should be. Furthermore, importance was un-derscored in the CCCB submission regarding the human and personal dimensions in the care to be given, including the spiritual / religious needs of families and communities. See the submission at cccb.ca.

August 2018 St. Michael Catholic Women's League Newsletter
As summer vacation draws to a close, I hope you have had a chance to enjoy the beautiful weather and the fan-
tastic environment in which we live, in Bright's Grove. As we head towards Labour Day Weekend, plans are
already under way for our fall projects and activities. Once again, it will be a busy few months preparing for our
major fundraisers.
Fall General Meeting
Mark your calendars! Our fall general meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 25, begin-
ning with Mass at 6pm. Details for this meeting will be available in our September newsletter!
You never know what exciting plans the executive will come up with for members and parish-
ioners alike!
Fruit Pie Baking Workshops
Our fruit pie workshops are starting earlier this year! The first workshop is on Monday, September 10, starting
at 9am and again on Monday, September 17. We use an assembly line format that is very efficient and allows
participants to work at different stations throughout the process. Never baked pies before. Join us! Our experi-
enced bakers love to assist newbies in the art of making and filling pie crusts. There are jobs for everyone. All
ladies in the parish and their friends are welcome to join us. If you signed up to donate items for the pie making,
they can be left in the kitchen, the week prior to September 10. Questions? Contact Mary VanDelft, coordinator
at: [email protected].
Pie Sales
We are selling our fruit pies a week earlier than in the past! The sales will take place after masses on Saturday, September 22
and Sunday, September 23. Consider your baking for Thanksgiving done. These exceptional pies are made with love and lo-
cal fruits. Don't miss out.
Annual CWL Golf Tournament
The annual Sacred Heart/St. Michael CWL Golf tournament takes place on Thursday, September 20 at Huron
Oaks. This is not serious golf. It's a fun time to get together and to share experiences. If you would like to join
us for 9 or 18 holes, please contact Mary VanDelft, coordinator at: [email protected]. Not a golfer?
Join us for a late lunch so you can hear our tall tales about the exceptional golf, near misses and golf balls that
must have been picked up by seagulls because we couldn't find them.
Prayers
Please continue to offer prayers for all those in our parish and community who have lost loved ones this
summer; for those who are ill and continue in their healing journeys; for all students, teachers and staff
returning to school in September; and finally for all women the world over, that our voices will be heard
by governments and influence legislation that will make this a better world to live in for all.
Communication
If you have any questions or comments you wish to share with the CWL, or a prayer request, please contact President Nelly
Kelders at [email protected] or call 519-908-9515.
