Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to join us in beautiful sunny Walt Disney World, Florida, for the 2019 AATOD Conference being held October 19-23, 2019, at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. This conference is sponsored by the Office of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, Florida Department of Children and Families (SAMH/DCF) and the Florida Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence (FATOD).

Our theme, Out of the Shadows: Managing the Opioid Epidemic through the Continuum of Care, comes at a time when the nation is facing unprecedented loss of life due to opioid related overdoses. This is now our number one public health crisis and YOU stand on the front lines in our fight to cease the senseless loss and grow the quality, expertise, access, and reputation of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) across the continuum of care. Our intent is to educate and promote acceptance and integration of MAT options by patients, families, clinicians, the medical system, judicial systems, government, policy makers, social service administrations, and the general public. We will disseminate innovative, evidence-based initiatives and treatment techniques to better serve patients and providers, improve program development and administration, promote integration across the continuum of care, and enhance patient outcomes to assist communities in developing an effective response to this crisis.

The Workshop Committee encourages you to submit an abstract for a Workshop Session or a Poster presenting the latest programs, research, innovative ideas, and regulatory developments relevant to the field of MAT and highlighting innovative treatment techniques and evidence-based initiatives. We invite you to present effective and proven strategies to assist healthcare partnerships and collaborations by advancing your partners’ understanding and acceptance of MAT for opioid use disorders as a crucial element to community wellness and response to the opioid epidemic. Proposals that focus on reducing MAT related stigma and discrimination are also encouraged.

There are a wide range of suggested topics listed in this call for proposals and it is our intent to attract submissions from multiple disciplines from across the continuum of care. However, the topics are “suggested” and selected abstracts will not be limited to the list provided. Our goal is to attract the largest and most diverse audience from around the world, including those not traditionally thought of as “in the treatment field.” Our ability to successfully address such a wide-ranging crisis will depend on our ability to fully integrate MAT across the continuum with everyone onboard. “Hot Topic Roundtables” will offer the opportunity for these varying disciplines to meet and discuss the questions and controversies associated with the provision of MAT services and advancing AATOD’s goal of greater consensus and advocacy for our field.

Please join us in sunny Florida to meet and engage with some of the leading experts from within the field and beyond. Walt Disney World offers some of the most amazing destination experiences and entertainment not only for you, but also for the whole family. Of course, there are numerous Disney and other resort venues to attend, but you can also go to multiple water parks, swim with dolphins, visit dozens of clubs, numerous shopping venues, and museum exhibits. We will be an hour from Port Canaveral (cruising), NASA, and the beach.

We invite you to submit a proposal and join us to help make the 2019 AATOD Conference the world’s premier training and educational event. Bring the family and have one of the best family vacation experiences in the same trip.

Sincerely,

G. Davy Kneessy, MS Robert C. Lambert, MA Conference Chair Conference Workshop Chair

SUGGESTED TOPICS FOR WORKSHOPS AND POSTERS

Patient Care & Best Practices We are requesting submissions on evidence-based innovative interventions and best practice models for treating opioid use disorders and concurrent medical and psychosocial issues within Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder. We are also interested in submissions relating to special considerations or adaptations of treatment strategies for diverse groups such as LGBTQIA+, ethnic minorities, undocumented patients, youth, pregnant women, and our aging population. Additionally, our participants want to learn about ways to improve patient engagement and retention, end premature discharges, reduce stigma and discrimination, as well as holistic or new and alternative modalities for healing. Conference attendees are interested in both research and application/skill development-based presentations.

- Innovative Opioid Treatment Program (OTP)/Office-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) treatment models

- Motivation enhancement therapies- Cognitive behavior therapies- Treatment for Cocaine, Benzodiazepine, Methamphetamine,

Tobacco, Alcohol use- Increasing retention- Strengthening the Therapeutic Alliance- Treating pregnant patients - Treatment of co-occurring disorders - Pain management and concurrent MAT- Pharmacotherapy topics as related to addiction medicine- Efficacy and utilization of MAT for opioid use disorder- Methadone and Buprenorphine/Naloxone/Naltrexone: Differences,

Efficacies, Coordination, transition between medications- Medication induction, barriers to prescribing, safety profiles, risk/

benefit analyses of various medications.- Reducing stigma and discrimination in the community and

among other medical professionals- Integrating Advanced Practice Providers (NPs, PAs, etc.) into OTPs- Utilizing technology to enhance treatment- Use of telemedicine in MAT- Peer support initiatives and best practices- Integrating families in comprehensive MAT - Ethical issues in MAT- Integrating evidence-based practices and MAT

Workforce DevelopmentThe field of behavior healthcare in general is facing a serious workforce shortage. Many administrators are looking for innovative ways to recruit and retain qualified staff. We are looking for proposals related to strategies to enhance and develop the MAT workforce.

- Innovative staff recruitment techniques- Staff retention strategies- Enhance MAT counselor wellness and preventing burnout- Innovative and effective models of Clinical Supervision- Supervisor and leadership development- Interface of Human Resources and clinical leadership- Staff training and education initiatives- Role of certifications and licensure

Community Partners & the Continuum of CareOne of the conference’s primary themes is integrating MAT with the continuum of care. Submissions that focus on building effective community partnerships are welcomed. We are requesting submissions on integration of MAT and effective models of working with the criminal justice system, drug courts, law enforcement, hospital emergency departments, and child welfare agencies as well as community outreach, community partnerships, and collaboration with primary care, other providers, and family members.

The research tells us that stigma and misinformation regarding MAT for opioid dependence are among the biggest barriers to patients accessing care. It is also often a barrier to service integration and building effective community partnerships. Presentations that focus on reducing stigma have been requested by conference attendees for the past several years.

- Integrating MAT in the criminal justice system- MAT and child welfare/protective services- Integrating MAT and mainstream medicine- MAT related educational initiatives- Partnering with law enforcement - Integrating community-based recovery supports- Practical methods to reduce stigma and misinformation within

the field and the community- Working with negatively biased colleagues

THEME PARK CAPITAL OF THE WORLD

Orlando is one of the world’s most visited family destinations, and while its illustrious themed attractions may steal the limelight, with a vibrant and wellkept city center and a climate that averages around 75° Fahrenheit, there are a surprising number of things to experience here. Let us guide you to some of the highlights you might want to plan for during your stay.

For the 2019 AATOD conference, you will be nestled in “The Happiest Place on Earth” at one of Disney’s worldclass properties, Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. From this central location and within close distance, you have four amazing Disney parks to explore; Magic Kingdom® Park, Epcot®, Disney’s Hollywood Studios® and Disney’s Animal Kingdom®, which was recently updated with new nightly attractions including Pandora—the World of Avatar.

Looking for other options for nearby entertainment? You won’t need to go far with the newly imagined Disney Springs being the place to be for shopping, dining and entertainment (plus no park ticket required!). Some fun activities we recommend if you head to Disney Springs: enter the world of Star Wars with a virtual experience at the Void, go bowling down memory lane at Splitsville, or ride a vintage amphicar near the Boathouse. Want to get out for a lively bite or beverage at Disney Springs? There are 60 dining options! Our favorites: Chef Morimoto of Iron Chef America offers PanAsian cuisine at his beautiful new restaurant in Disney Springs, try a flight of acclaimed

wines with Master Sommelier George Miliotes at Wine Bar George, or curve your craving for gourmet chocolates at the Ganachery.

Orlando is the perfect destination for unique experiences! Want to feel what it is like to enter the world of the most famous wizard? Head to Universal Orlando for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™.

Too wildly imaginative and expansive to be contained by any one theme park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is split between Diagon Alley™ at Universal Studios Florida™ and Hogsmeade™ at Universal’s Islands of Adventure™, with the Hogwarts™ Express connecting the two. Before you know it, you’ll be casting spells, quaffing Butterbeer™, going to a Quidditch™ match and even facing off against Voldemort™ himself.

For upclose animal encounters and pulsepounding rides, SeaWorld® Orlando’s main theme park has you covered. SeaWorld’s famous, familyfriendly live shows have it all: from the titular stars of Dolphin Days and majestic killer whales of One Ocean and Ocean Discovery, to the hilarious antics of Clyde and Seamore’s Sea Lion High and the cast of dogs, cats, ducks and even pigs of Pets Ahoy, these performers will leave you thoroughly amazed and entertained. You can also get close to SeaWorld’s stars via animal encounters throughout the park. Make friends with a dolphin or journey to the newly created Antarctica for a penguin expedition.

Welcome to Florida

Page 9: CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS Out of the Shadows: DEADLINE ...We are pleased to invite you to join us in beautiful sunny Walt Disney World, Florida, for the 2019 AATOD Conference being held

Conveniently located just 20 minutes away from your hotel, International Drive, aka IDrive, is bursting with oneofakind attractions, vibrant dining and nightlife. A unique activity recommended for team building and fun memories: IDrive has five “escape room” attractions that can accommodate eight, 10 or larger groups of players. Tackle the mystery together and solve the puzzle to escape! Whatever you’re craving, you’ll find it on IDrive, many of the dining locations include entertainment from live shows to dancing on the tables!—Tapa Toro Tapas Bar & Paella Pit, Tin Roof, Yard House, B.B. King’s Blues Club, Lafayette’s and Taverna Opa, among others. IDrive is a great place to dance the night away—thanks in large part to Mango’s Tropical Cafe. With enough space for 2,000 revelers, Mango’s boasts one of the best dinner shows in Orlando, as well as fantastic Latin flavors, multiple bars, live DJs and plenty of dance floors for you to get your groove on.

Described as “The Epicenter of Awesome,” Universal CityWalk (no ticket required!) offers restaurants, retailers and fun at the nexus of Universal Orlando® Resort’s theme parks. It’s also home to some of Orlando’s tastiest dining options. Two of the entertainment district’s most unforgettable choices are the steampunkinfluenced Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen and oneofakind fusion at The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar. You’ll also discover several themed restaurants, including Hard Rock Cafe, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, Antojitos Authentic Mexican Food, Bob Marley—A Tribute to Freedom and Hot Dog Hall of Fame.

Named one of Travel + Leisure magazine’s “25 New Tourist Attractions Worth Adding to Your Bucket List” when it opened in 2014, downtown Orlando’s Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts produces more than 300 shows every year. The lineup includes Broadway productions, performances by Orlando Ballet, charttopping musicians, marquee comedians, family entertainment and much more. Also downtown, SAK Comedy Lab features live improv theater that’s heavy on audience participation. Check their websites to see the lineup during your stay.

Unique during this time in October, Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival is in full swing. It’s a spectacular celebration of global cuisines, music and more as you visit each unique travel inspired destination. If you are getting into the Halloween spirit, keep it light with Mickey’s NotSoScary Halloween Party (adult trick or treating and the parade are not to be missed) or SeaWorld’s Halloween Spooktacular. Want more of a scare? Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights features more haunted houses, scare zones, and shows to get your scream on (plus the lines for rides are a lot shorter after hours!) Finally, Orlando’s downtown streets come alive with an interactive, multimedia celebration called IMMERSE, attracting more than 1,000 visual artists and performers from all over the world to Orlando.

As you can see, there is something for everyone in Orlando. So bring your inner child and stay an extra day or two. Take this opportunity to increase your knowledge at the conference, reenergize with great ideas, meet new friends and carve out some time to enjoy the action! AATOD and the Conference Hospitality Committee welcome you to Orlando!
