The Van Aken District is requesting portfolios from artists interested in producing works of public art in the district.

Phase 1 of the Van Aken District opened in summer 2018. The Van Aken District is a pedestrian-friendly, transit-oriented mixed-use project to create a downtown commercial space in historic Shaker Heights.

The City’s 2016 Van Aken District Connections Plan specifically called for public art set within a network of bicycle and pedestrian amenities to create a vibrant downtown district. Public art will draw people into and help define the new district. This investment builds on Shaker Heights’ history of integrating the arts into its diverse community spaces and neighborhoods.

The recently completed Van Aken District Public Art Action Strategy further refines community goals and vision for art in the district. In 2018, a project was installed by Coryn Kempster and Julia Jamrozik around the edges of the Van Aken District and some additional small-scale projects have been integrated over the past year. This Call for Artists seeks to expand the public art program in Van Aken District.
