Call for Artists to Create Stations of the Cross Updated November 1, 2016 Artwork Opportunity: Saint Mark’s Cathedral invites proposals from artists to create their interpretations of the fourteen Stations of the Cross. The history of the stations has tended toward literal interpretations, but ultimately their purpose is to invite reflection and contemplation not only of Jesus’ passion and death, but also the universality of these themes. Thus, the artwork does not need to adhere to a particular cultural or religious framework. We hope, instead, that the art will use the fourteen scenes as a starting point for a broader meditation on human relationships, injustice, suffering, and the mystery of death. Prize: $3000 will be awarded upon completion of artwork installation. The winning art will be exhibited in the nave at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral from March 1 – April 14, 2017. Other submissions may have an opportunity to be shown at another arts event at Saint Mark’s. Eligibility: Applicants must be independent artist(s) residing in the United States. Preference will be given to artists working in the northwest. Media: The pieces of art will be displayed throughout the nave of the Cathedral. The only limitations to format are the limitations of the space. Saint Mark’s is a functioning Cathedral where liturgical and community gatherings take place, thus the art needs to consider the purpose of the space. We encourage all applicants to view the space before completing an application if possible. Application: Please send images and a proposal in a single PDF (not to exceed 12 mb) to the Rev. Canon Jennifer King Daugherty [email protected]. If your application includes video/audio, please include a link to that media in the PDF. Please label PDF as Lastname_firstname. Within the submission please include the following: -Artist info (Name, contact info) -Bio/Resume -Detailed proposal that contains at least one example of a completed piece for the exhibition, as well as concrete sketches/outline of proposed pieces for the

rest of the series. -Expected financial budget for completion and mounting of the artwork. Timeline: All applications must be received by November 28th, 2016. Winner will be notified by December 6th. Art must be installed by the end of February 2017. Background: Saint Mark’s strives to be a gathering place for all people- a house of prayer that worships God, proclaims the Gospel and nurtures faith; as well as a loving, welcoming, inclusive community that encourages service, and integrates social and environmental justice into our lives. Each year, during the season of Lent, we place fourteen paintings depicting the Stations of the Cross on our Cathedral walls to encourage reflection and contemplation. This year, Saint Mark’s would like to deepen the experience of Lent through a new and original interpretation of the Stations. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of a regular call to artists to create works for exhibition at Saint Mark’s. The Stations are fourteen incidents during Jesus’ last day of life, progressing from his condemnation by Pilate to his crucifixion and burial. The names of the stations are:

I. Jesus is Condemned to Die II. Jesus Accepts His Cross III. Jesus Falls the First Time IV. Jesus Meets his Mother V. Symon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry the Cross VI. Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus VII. Jesus Falls the Second Time VIII. Jesus Speaks to the Women of Jerusalem IX. Jesus Falls the Third Time X. Jesus Is Stripped of His Garments XI. Jesus Is Nailed to the Cross XII. Jesus Dies on the Cross XIII. Jesus’ Body Is Taken Down from the Cross XIV. Jesus’ Body Is Laid in the Tomb Summary Exhibition: Stations of the Cross Location: Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral, 1245 10th Ave. E., Seattle, WA Dates: March 1 – April 14, 2017 Submission Deadline: November 28th Notification: December 6th Entry fee: none Contact (for questions or additional information): [email protected] More information on Saint Mark’s website
