    Berlin in 2012.

balancing in total knee arthroplasty, orthopaedic responsibility in pain treatment, arthroscopy in hand surgery, treatment options in di cult cases, and

an evaluation in stem cell therapy, to mention only a ew.

In collaboration with our Speciality Societies, we are organising special sessions such as Experts meet Experts (ExMEx), and the Controversial Case

Discussions (CCD), which have been highly rated in the past as has the one-day Comprehensive Review Course (CRC) aimed at younger colleagues and

residents. Cross fre sessions will guarantee interesting discussions, while the Mike Freeman and Erwin Morscher Honorary Lectures will oer the views

o two o our most experienced surgeons. Industry symposia, workshops and technical exhibits will also be a major part in our Congress.

The scientifc programme would, however, be incomplete without your participation, without ree paper lectures and e-posters. We encourage all o

you to submit abstracts o your work, so that we can put together an exceptional scientifc programme. The Local Organising Committee and the EFORT

Scientifc Committee are certain to make this EFORT Congress a most valuable educational event.

Berlin is at the cutting edge o music, art and lie-

style trends. At the same time outstanding muse-ums, orchestras and theatres continue to cultivate

the citys great traditions. Drawn to the capital by

its wealth o creativity, more and more artists rom

around the globe are transorming Berlin into one

    o Europes most innovative metropolises.

    History

Founded in the 13th century, Berlin has had an

eventul history. Excavations rom 2008 suggest

that the city may be even older than was previously

assumed: state archaeologists have discovered an

oak beam that probably dates back to 1183.

Almost no other city has experienced such re-

quent, radical change transorming its ace. Alt-

hough Berlin saw steady growth in its importance,

dazzling epochs alternated with darker eras. Never-

theless, the ormerly divided city has succeeded

in becoming a vibrant metropolis in the heart o

Europe. Nearly 20 years ater the all o the Berlin

Wall, the city never ceases to change and develop.

    Art

Berlin is the city o the muses, artists and muse-ums! Berlin has over 170 museums packed with

the worlds art treasures and ascinating histori-

cal exhibitions spanning the centuries! But is also

home to an amazing creative pool o art produ-

cers - more than 6,000 artists and cultural wor-

kers busily creating the dynamic young art or

    tomorrows collections.

    Entertainment

Berlin is home to the best in light entertainment - musicals, the Wintergarten and Chamleon vaude-

villes, the Friedrichstadtpalast, Europes largest revue theatre with its legendary high-kicking chorus

girls and breathtaking stage shows, plus entertainment galore at any number o exciting smaller venues. Many theatres also present stunning programmes.
