In 2016, for the f irst t ime, the European Aeronautics Science Network will convene in Portugal. The 6th International Conference of EASN will be co-organised with the Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (INEGI) of the University of Porto (FEUP).

This year’s Conference is set to be the larger, broader and most comprehensive annual gathering of the Association. It is designed to be a l ead ing fo rum fo r d i scuss ion and exchange of information about state-of-the-art R&D activities in Aeronautics and Air Transport.

The conference will include Plenary Sessions by renowned speakers and Open Discussions w i th d i s t i ngu ished researchers f rom the industry and academia. It will also include Thematic Sessions housing the majority of c u r re n t E u ro p e a n a e ro n a u t i c s r e s e a rc h programs and Technical Workshops where e v o l v i n g i d e a s , t e c h n o l o g i e s , p ro d u c t s , services and processes will be discussed. In this respect, the Conference is expected to foster the cooperation and interaction between its participants on a multidisciplinary basis serving as a meeting for exchanging novel and innovative ideas for future research.

The 2016 EASN Conference will be a flagship event in dissemination of aeronautics research activities and our goal is to share high quality, cur rent ach ievements and new upst ream research ideas.

W E L C O M E T O O U R G A T H E R I N G With great pleasure, and on behalf of the EASN Association, I would like to invite you to participate in the 6th International EASN Conference that will be held on 18-21 October 2016, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Porto, Portugal.

The objective of this annual conference is to provide the Aeronautics Researchers with the latest updates on research achievements and with the opportunity to cooperate and exchange ideas. It will offer a unique opportunity for knowledge dissemination to the most relative pan-European audience. Recent findings which will be presented at the conference, may significantly contribute to further scientific advances. We strongly believe that thanks to such events we will be able to continue our research and together achieve milestones that used to be out of our reach.

We wou ld l i ke to i nv i te sc ien t i s t s , researchers , spec ia l i s t s , gove r nmen ta l and non -gove r nmen ta l o rgan isa t ions and any o the r s takeho lder o f t he aeronautics and air transport community to share their achievements at a series of Thematic Sessions and Discussion Panels.

Together with the Institute of Science and Innovation In Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (INEGI) we are planning an original programme to present, share, debate and conclude on the latest science and research achievements.

We welcome you to join us and be part of this year’s conversation of the European Aeronautics community. We welcome you to Porto!

Dear delegates and colleagues,

On behalf of INEGI - the Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and the organization of this 6th European Aeronautics Science Network conference, it’s a pleasure to welcome you all in Porto and wish you a fruitful and inspiring three-day forum.

Although the Engineering adventure in Porto really began in 1765 with the creation of the Nautical School, it was only 90 years ago that the present Faculty of Engineering of Porto University was formally instituted. Compared to the Faculty of Engineering, INEGI is a young interface institute, created 30 years ago this year, with the mission of transferring knowledge to the industry, on the many areas related to Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management. INEGI pledged its commitment to the subject of Aeronautics and Space Engineering several years ago, and has been doing research work in the area that has not gone unnoticed, focused mainly on Composite Materials, Experimental Mechanics and Product Development.

Receiving such a prestigious conference in our 30th anniversary is by far the most stimulating activity amongs t those wh ich were p rogrammed fo r the commemorat ions throughout 2016. INEGI therefore invites the delegates to visit us in the Faculty of E n g i n e e r i n g C a m p u s w h e re w e a re l o c a t e d , i n anticipation for innumerous possibilities for new ventures and productive partnerships.

The City of Porto has one of the richest artistic, cultural and historical heritages in Portugal, of which the several monuments and museums all over the city are proof. This was officially recognized by UNESCO, which considered Porto (its historical part) as “World Heritage”. Porto is increas ing ly v is i ted a l l year round, w i th v is i to rs contributing to the liveliness of the Porto scenery. But Porto is also a city where its history can be found in a small street or in a dialogue with its inhabitants, so we invite you to explore it and start a new adventure here.

T H E E A S N A S S O C I A T I O N The European Aeronautics Science Network (EASN) is the Association of the European Academia active in Aeronautics Research. Through i ts current ly registered members, EASN connects more than 10.000 academics and researchers th roughout Europe. The primary aim of the EASN Association is the advancement of the aeronautics sciences and technologies through innovative research and the support of European Universities, University Departments and Institutes as well as University research staff to perform aeronautics related research.

THE CONFERENCE The Conference is the EASN’s annual forum where the Aeronautics Academia, Research community and Industry meet and present the sector’s latest advancements and innovations. The 6th EASN International Conference will, for the f irst t ime, take place in Portugal co-organised with the Institute of Science and I nnova t i on i n Mechan ica l and I ndus t r i a l Engineering (INEGI). It will serve as a major d i s s e m i n a t i o n e v e n t w h e r e t h e l a t e s t a c h i e v e m e n t s f r o m r u n n i n g o r r e c e n t l y completed European and International research activities, in Aeronautics and Air Transport, will be presented in dedicated Thematic sessions. Moreover, it will offer the wider European AAT Community a forum to discuss on policies and a c t i o n s s u p p o r t i n g t h e a d v a n c e m e n t o f Aeronautics in Europe, such as enhancing the coherence of strategic research policy making, impact assessment and dissemination in the fields of Aeronautics and Air Transport.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND The Conference is addressed to the entire Aeronautics community, including Industrial and Research Organisations, SMEs and Academia. It is intended to cover all topics in Aeronautics and Air Transport, including: Flight Physics, Aerostructures, Propulsion, Flight Mechanics, Integrated Design & Validation, Air Traff ic M a n a g e m e n t , A i r p o r t s , H u m a n F a c t o r s , Innovative Concepts and Scenarios, Aircraft Avionics, Systems & Equipment. Researchers involved in these fields will have an excellent opportunity for discussing, networking and creating synergies for future collaborations. The EASN events prov ide an oppor tun i ty fo r researchers to present their point of view, r e g a r d i n g s p e c i f i c r e s e a r c h f i e l d s i n Aeronautics and Air Transport, to a relative pan-European audience. The structure of the 2016 C o n f e r e n c e w i l l e m p h a s i s e i n t o t h e enhancement of synergies between researchers through interactive sessions, therefore the Conference is designed to engage participants to be a part of a discussion rather than passive listeners.
