I have a question for us to consid-er. It is not really a difficult question to answer, although in some instances it may present itself as a difficult ques-tion. It is a question that might help us experience more clarity in certain areas of our life. It is a question that if answered honestly might lead us to a more liberated life, healthier relation-ships, and a deeper sense of meaning and purpose in this life.

So what is the question you ask? Here it is. “What if…I were to live my life like I thought Jesus really wanted me to? What might my life look like? Would it look the same as it does at this moment? Maybe it would. Maybe it wouldn’t. What might be different? What would change? What would my habits be…the things that I am disciplined in? What might I give up…surrender…release? Would any of my attitudes about things and people change?

I’m not asking this question to discuss a way or means of trying to earn God’s favor in our life and a way of ‘purchasing’ eternal life. I’m ask-ing this question from a standpoint of believing that we have God’s favor because He chooses to offer it to us freely out of His love and invites us to grow in His grace (His power and activity in our very being). You see, I believe we are made right with God by His doing and I believe we also live right in this life by His doing. One of the great aspects of the Gospel is that we get to be mastered by Jesus through the presence of the Holy Spirit!

I recently went with my kids to see the remake of the movie “The Karate Kid.” It is a wonderful story about courage, discipline, and focus. But, most of all, the movie is about an

incredible relationship between a boy and his master and the life changing impact the master has on the boy. All through the movie, and for days following the movie, I kept asking myself, “What would my life look like if I really allowed my Master to master me? What would my life look like if I…like the boy in the movie…trusted my Master so much that I did everything He asked and told me to do even though at times it made abso-lutely no sense to me whatsoever?”

If I really believe that the King-dom of God (i.e. the reign of God) is everything and that nothing else in this life even runs a close second, what would change? What are the things, attitudes, and disciplines I would keep…I would change…I would begin? “What if…I were to live my life like I thought Jesus really wanted me to?

Steven Becker, a longtime Calimesa member and teacher at Mesa Grande Academy for the past 22 years, died on Friday, June 11, 2010, after a year-long battle with brain cancer. He was 61.

Memorial services in his honor will be held on Sabbath afternoon, July 17 at 4:00 p.m. in our sanctuary.

He was buried on June 23 at the Riverside National Cemetery with full military honors with family and close friends in attendance.

The deceased was born December 10, 1948, in St. Helena, California, to his parents Warren and Sophie Becker, who at that time served on the staff of Pacific Union College in Angwin, California. Dr. Becker taught organ at the school’s music department and his mother taught piano.

The family transferred to Berrien Springs, Michigan in 1959 when his father joined the music faculty of An-drews University. Steve met Donna Kriley, his future wife, at Andrews Academy.

He was drafted into the U.S. military in 1971 and a short time after basic training, he was assigned to the “Whitecoat” research program in Maryland.

After Steve was discharged from the military in 1974, he returned to

Andrews to complete his B.A. degree in Technology Education. At the same time, Donna earned a Master of Arts degree in teaching, and on the same graduation weekend, they were mar-ried – August 1974.

Their first assignment was at Highland Academy near Hagerstown, Maryland. A year later, they moved to San Gabriel, California, where Steve taught at San Gabriel Academy. His favorite classes were in American history, US history, auto technology, woodworking, drafting, and he was the sponsor of the school’s yearbook.

While at San Gabriel, he founded CYB (Christian Youth Builders) - a program that sent volunteer teenagers to the mission field every year to help build churches and schools. The tradi-tion continued when he received an invitation to Mesa Grande Academy in 1988.

In 2004 Steve was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and was at first given less then a year to live. He went through surgery and proton radiation and recovered, returning to a full teaching load at the school. In 2009 the tumor returned and surgery was done with the expectations that he would recover. But he suffered two strokes after surgery. For the last eight months of his life he was at a care center in Redlands.

Surviving are his wife, Donna; three sons, Ryan, 29, Christopher, 23, and Alex, 14; his brother Harold, his daughter-in-law, Emily Becker of Loma Linda; hundreds of students he taught at Mesa Grande Academy, and a host of friends in the Yucaipa/Calimesa area.

Memorial services in her honor were held on June 27 in our Calimesa church.

She graduated from Auburn Acad-emy in 1954 and then completed her Vocational Nursing license in Caldwell Idaho. Marian and Norman David-son were married November 26, 1954 in Caldwell.

Marian loved flowers and she was a wonderful designer. She also enjoyed making balloon animals and caricatures for children’s parties. She enjoyed being involved in the com-munity, teaching painting classes for Yucaipa home school children. She also taught classes to senior groups.

Her daughter Laura’s children referred to her as their “Funny Grand-ma”, because she made every day fun. She loved to play games with her fam-ily and friends.

Marian is survived by her daugh-ters - Lea, Lisa, Laura and Lavonne, her brother Ralph, her sister Alice, long time friend Joe Hill, seven grandchildren and eight great-grand children.

FIDI MWERO - NEW YOUTH PASTOR

Fidi Mwero, an Inland Em-pire man, has been appointed by South-Eastern California Confer-ence of Seventh-day Adventists as a new associate pastor of our Calimesa Church. He has already assumed his duties with the church as director of youth activities. He replaces Dustin Comm who served in the same position for two years. Dustin accepted a media position in Denver Colorado. Fidi plans to make his home in Redlands, CA.

Born in Berrien Springs, MI to immigrant parents from Tanzania, Fidi spent most of his early child-hood in Loma Linda, CA. When he was nine years of age, his parents moved to Las Vegas, NV where his parents still live and where he calls home.

After his elementary and sec-ondary school training, Fidi first attended the College of Southern Nevada before going to La Sierra University where he received an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Wellness Management while taking the pre-seminary, pre-professional course that concentrated on youth

ministry.After completing his bachelor’s

degree at La Sierra, Fide was em-ployed as a minister for six months in the church’s local conference be-fore being sent to Berrien Springs, Michigan where he began studies for his Master’s Degree in Divin-ity and Family Life Education. It is expected that he will receive his graduate degree in a ceremony to be held in Michigan in August. He has plans sometime in the future to pursue an additional degree in Mar-riage and Family Therapy.

As the church’s newest addi-tion to the staff, Pastor Mwero will spend nearly all of his time foster-ing the leadership of the young people of our church.

He says, “I hope to quickly tap into the talents and passion of the young people and help them use their gifts so that God’s will can be accomplished in their lives.”

Further, he says that he has “a passion for worship and music as well as creating time and space for the youth to have healthy discus-sions on a regular basis as they fellowship on a regular basis at church and at the school.”

Fidi was introduced to the con-gregation on May 22, 2010 by our senior pastor, Jon Ciccarelli.

You would expect that descen-dents of homesteaders might be adventurous and willing to try new challenges and this has certainly been the story for Myron and Cleo Miller.

Their lives began in the chilly prairies of North Dakota; Myron growing up on the farm and meet-ing his sweetheart at North Dakota Academy (NDA). Myron had a knack for music and began studying key-board during 7th grade; continuing his studies through Academy. After NDA, Myron and Cleo attended Union College, married and later returned to North Dakota Academy where Myron, over a span of 25 years, spent much of the time teaching piano and organ at NDA - taking some time off every so often for farming.

One night, after children had been born, Cleo asked Myron to go to town to buy one of their children some shoes. Myron went to town, struck up a conversation with the owner of the store and discovered he needed to sell the shoe store. Myron returned home with not only the shoes, but a shoe store business as well. Cleo was surprised, but also having the “let’s try it” spirit joined her husband in the new endeavor and built up the business to the point where they won “outstand-ing sales” award at one of the yearly industry conventions.

While expanding their shop, they were given the opportunity to invest

in some drapery fabrics and catalogs, which would be housed in a corner of the shoe store. Their fascination with this new venture sparked an interest in home decoration. Enthusiastically they began to learn the “ins” and “outs” of draperies, valences, eventu-ally taking decorating courses. Later they became owners of a “Decorating Den” franchise. An adventure they enjoyed for many years.

With each chapter change in their lives, the Millers always sensed God’s guiding hand. After living many years in North Dakota, Myron had been interested in exploring a new business venture in Colorado Springs which resulted in the need to sell the decorat-ing business. Cleo was holding down the fort in the family store when the call came to sell. As the days past, she wasn’t sure how things were going to turn out, but just at the crucial moment a “mystery buyer” appeared, bought all the stock and paid in cash, much to the Miller’s relief. Myron and Cleo kept checking with the town’s people to see where the business reappeared- but it never did. Hmm- very interest-ing; the Millers saw God’s finger-prints all over that coincidence.

The new Colorado Springs venture was developing an “Embroidery” business that required the purchase of a “state of the art” machine. Before the bank would underwrite the loan, the banker said, “Myron, you must show us that this would be a viable investment”. Myron, ever positive, accompanied by son-in-law, Al Boyko visited many department stores and businesses who happily signed “In-tent” contracts with Myron and again a new business was born.

Cleo and Myron have had store lo-cations for their embroidery work, but their most satisfying memories are the years they traveled to fairs and rodeos; meeting folks and forming friendships all over the western U.S. They have

embroidered jackets and shirts for movie stars, corporations, truckers and many others. They chuckle as they re-call how many times they were placed right by the “Adventist” booth. Myron and Cleo became the nurturing “Mom and Pop” to many of the vendors that traveled from venue to venue and who often needed a loving shoulder to lean on.

Family is fundamentally important to the Millers and they have celebrated and enjoyed their four children,13 grandchildren and 14 great grand-children. Daughter Nadine Boyko teaches at Mesa Grande Academy, son David pastors two churches in upper Canada, Timothy lives in New Mexi-co and works as a nurse and Mark is a trucker who stayed in North Dakota.

Most recently (until Feb. of 2010) the Millers ran an embroidery shop in Yucaipa, which they had for five years, during which time they made close friends with the business neigh-bors in the suites nearby. When Cleo discovered there was a need for chil-dren’s and baby clothing for Calexico Mission school, she asked the busi-ness neighbor who had a pregnancy counseling center next door if she could take some of the “overstock” of donated clothes destined for tossing. The neighbor was thrilled to contribute and thus began a new ministry for the Millers. From that small beginning they began making regular deliver-ies in their van to Calexico Mission school, later adding deliveries to Family Assistance League, Set Free ministries, the “Old Fire” victims at the Orange Show a few years back and others. The day we spoke, the van was loaded for the next delivery- retire-ment hasn’t slowed them at all.

We appreciate Myron’s organ min-istry. We are lucky to have he and Cleo in our church community since 1986.

ITALIAN OBOIST TO PERFORM AT CALIMESA

8

On Sabbath afternoon, July 10 at 5 pm, our church will host a classical oboe and organ concert. The baroque concert, all by Ital-ian composers, will be performed by oboist Giuseppe Nalin, and organist Irmengard Jennings of Redlands. Mr. Nalin is visiting from Italy and is the father of our member - Ronny Nalin.

Jennings is the Minister of Music at Faith Lutheran Church in Yucaipa and is on the music faculty of the University of Redlands.

Giuseppe Nalin received his diploma in oboe form the Conser-vatory of Florence (Italy) in 1979. He initially devoted his attention to the repertoire of 20th century contemporary music, founding the “Alban Quintet” wind quin-tet. With this group, he has given numerous concerts and recorded two CDs.

In 1985, Giuseppe specialized in the study of baroque and clas-sical oboe, with P. Dombrecht in Antwerp (Belgium) and A. Bernar-dini in Venice (Fondazione Cini).

In the same year, he founded the baroque ensemble “Sans Souci”, a group that performs on original in-struments. With “Sans Souci”, he has received critical international acclaim, to date having recorded 13 CDs for “Dynamic” and “Tactus” Records and performed in several European and African countries.

It is of interest to note that many 18th century orchestral insturments, like the oboe that Mr. Nalin will be playing, were pitched at A- 415 - a common pitch of that era.

One of the oboe organ selec-tions for the concert will feature a father and son oboe duet.

Organist Irmengard Jennings holds Bachelor of Music degrees in Organ Performance and Music Education, and a Masters of Music in Organ Performance from the University of Redlands.

Irmengard has made numerous appearances as organ soloist and as an accompanist in the Inland Empire. She has performed with several organ duos and chamber ensembles. She currently performs with the Nottingham Trio, a flute/cello/piano trio. Irmengard has also performed on the Loma Linda University Church Vespers Concert Series.

Irmengard worked at the Uni-versity of Redlands for 22 years, where she was Assistant to the Director of the School of Music, Director of the Community School of Music and the Arts, and Adjunct Professor of Organ.

Lets all support this great con-cert. A free-will offering will be accepted.

VBSPraiseTeamduringSabbathSchoolJune14

Ahoy Mates! Calimesa’s High Seas VBS Expedition has now come to port for 2010. The ‘ocean going’ adventure’s theme was “Finding Our Way to Jesus”. This fun ministry for our community children and staff be-gan on June 14 and concluded Sabbath morning June 19. Pastor Isaac Kim reports that a total 213 children regis-tered; 30 were from Calimesa, 54 from Beaumont/Cherry Valley and 72 from Yucaipa. There were 80 + volunteers.

One nightly highlight was the amazing science demonstrations that Skipper (Alfred Riddle) and Gil-ligan (Nathan Kelleher) conducted. The kids were so excited to watch test tubes and beakers bubbling with smoke and color.

All Sabbath Schools convened in the sanctuary on June 19 as the children demonstrated their week of singing for their parents and audience. Pastor Jon Cicarelli and others led the

children and audience in a “jump for joy” praise sing. Skipper and Gilligan captivated the children one more time with colorful chemical reactions.
