July26 - August 2, 2008

CGA would like to thank Mike Behning for announcing the awards at the Banqueton Saturday evening. Mike did a great job of making each rider feel special. Hewas also in charge of who gets to eat first and last. Great job Mike and thank youagain.

There are always unsung heroes at any event as large and complicated as Conven-tion and the CGA Office heartily thanks those folks who organized and presentedthe awards. First and foremost are our CGA Queen, Roquel Merrick and herPrincesses, Rachell Crill, Shelby Burchell, Tiffany Scharton, Ashley Banks, DianeWilliamson, Kelsey Bragg, Danielle Lopez and Molly McGill. They lookedbeautiful and were on their high heeled, aching feet all evening. Thank you ladies!

Organizing the Royalty again this year was our new "QUEEN MOM" DanaHerchkorn. Lining up the members for the awards to be presented was SheriHerchkorn and Gayle Lewis. This is a huge job every year and most of these ladieshave been doing this for longer than I can remember. These are the people thatreally make it run smoothly. Thank you all very much. You know I couldn't do itwithout you.

Thank you to Lesa, Ashley, Stefani and Kassidi Hofman for helping make thebeautiful center pieces. They were really cute and everyone wanted one. We arehoping next year more districts will participate. Thank you to everyone who helpedsetup the awards for the banquet .

Last but not least once again I would like to give a huge THANK YOU to myhusband Rodger Odom for all you do behind the scenes all year, especially atConvention.

Happy New Year to everybody!!!! Hope you all had a wonderful Holiday Season. It’shard to believe that it’s already 2008 and we’re just getting ready for another season ofriding and fun at the Rio Linda Central Park Horse Arena.

Last fall started the 2007-2008 season off with a bang. There were new arena recordsset at the October and November shows. The Rio Linda Elverta Recreation and ParkDistrict has done a great job of prepping the ground. Depending on how wet thisspring is we are ready to start setting more records with lots of Supreme and AAA+rides at our first show on March 1st. This will be a Type 2 show with Fig. 8 Stake,Poles II, Keyhole, Quadrangle, Speed Barrels and Big T. In my November column Isaid that District 5 doesn’t count set ups for arena records and boy was I wrong. Atthe meeting in November, I heard all about it so I hereby formally retract, redact, remove, rescind and regret that statement. Turns out that any good ride in District 5can earn you a record holder title. So come try out our ground and see what you can

The December 1st show was very cold with hard frost and a cold light wind thatpicked up throughout the day. We all thought since other districts were running and itwas so cold, plus it’s the start of the holidays, the show would be pretty small.WRONG!!! The rigs just kept pulling in, sometimes 3 and 4 at a time. Plans to notsplit the arena were quickly revised. Once the frost melted on the arena dirt it wasobvious that Bruce and his crew had once again done a perfect prep job on the arena. This was the last show for 2007 and the ground held for the entire show. Thank youonce again to the Rio Linda Elverta Recreation and Park District for taking such goodcare of the arena.

We had one arena record set by Chrystal Moore on Sting Em Pipi in Hurry Scurry witha blazing hot run of 9.256. Now you know that the records are getting pretty hard tobeat when the difference between the old record and new record is only .024 thou-sandths of a second. Mariah deMontigny on Bar De Pavo set the old record on 9/16/06 with a 9.280. This also means that the ground is getting very consistent. Hats offto Chrystal and Pipi for an amazing ride.

There were a total of 7 AAA+ rides and 2 Supreme rides. I can also say with confi-dence there were several “personal best” rides for the day. Congratulations to all theriders.

When they all got done pulling in and signing up there were 75 riders taking advantageof the great ground. There were lots of new faces again and some old friends that wehaven’ seen in a while. Welcome to Maddie Celio on Katie who rode a very solid AAin all the events except a miss in Speed Ball. Good job Maddie and Katie. Welcomeback to Kiana Harmon on a new horse, Little Miss Windie. Welcome to Tricia Kashon Roxy; Chrystal Moore brought her son Taaron to ride on Oreo; Welcome back toreturning riders Stephanie Russo on Chexy Lil Ladies, Renee Russo on Fancey,Yvonne Russo on Honky Tonk; and Amanda Sanderson on two horses, Moose andJewel. Many of you will remember that Jewel was ridden to a lot of AAA+ times bySteve Gilbert. Welcome to our newest lead line rider Micayla Turner on Windy. Itwas great to have you all come ride with us and don’t forget to mark your calendar forMarch 1, 2008. See you then.

do. Those records are getting pretty low so be sure to put your running shoes on yourhorse.

The Late Night Riders closely watched the weather forecast leading up to the Novem-ber 10 show since rain was predicted for Saturday. Mr. Mark Finan at Channel 3confidently predicted that the rain would arrive in the late afternoon or early evening. Not before 7:00p.m. he said. And sure enough, the morning was chilly but no sign ofrain. Just cloudy and overcast with the sun playing peekaboo with the clouds. So offwe all went to run our Annual Turkey Trot show with a complete Turkey Dinner forHigh Point and a $20 Gift Certificate for Reserve.

Once again the arena looked perfect. There were only 36 riders, so we decided not tosplit the arena. A big welcome to our the new riders: Keli Anderson on Johnny,Jessica Ashcraft on Cutter and one of our best arena workers who was riding for thefirst time, Danny Ross on Princess Reale. It’ great to see the new faces and to see ourworkers getting a chance to ride. We also were glad to see Robyn Thornton onGalloping Goose riding at last. Robyn is a constant worker but doesn’t ride that often.Great to see you on a horse, Robyn.

The Late Night Riders want to say “Thank You” to: Judges for the day, Jody Abeland Teresa Barosso. The announcers/time writers for the day were, Gene Moore,Marrisa Stevens and Kim Stevens. Our Gate Swingers were; Donna Witkowski andLoretta Stevens. Arena aides working in the arena to set up and take down the eventswere: Kim Stevens, Brittney Green, and Jessica Witkowski. The Ribbon Lady whohanded out the ribbons and coupons and took care of the worker list was Linda Dutra.

All went well for the first three events which were Quadrangle, Poles II and Big T.And then, just as we were finishing up Big T, the first light sprinkles fell. Maybe itwould pass so off we all ran to cover our saddles. But the sprinkles quickly turnedinto real rain and it was obvious that Mr. Mark Finan at Channel 3 was all wet. It wasonly 12:30 and we had to call the show for rain. Judy Sharp informed us that Channel31 had been predicting rain would arrive in the Sacramento Valley by 12:30 and wewere watching the wrong weather reports. Clearly, she was right.

We quickly printed out the Highpoint and Reserve Winners based on the three events.Fortunately the Mystery Jackpot was Poles II and we had already paid out the winners.

The Mystery Jackpot was Poles II with a pot of $45.001D - Rebecca Goerner on Dude Vader won $19.13 with a time of 25.0242D - Nina Hernandez on Thunder won $14.63 with a time of 29.4973D - Andrea Brymer on Penny won $5.63 with a time of 31.0534D - Jessica Ashcraft on Cutter won $5.63 with a time of 33.0125D - no winner, not enough signed up to fill the 5D so their share was redistributed tothe winners.

Amazingly, even though there were only 9 riders signed up in the Mystery Jackpot, the3D and 4 D got back their original five dollars plus a tiny bit more. Don’t forget, anyone can win one of these Mystery Jackpots. All you have to do is enter.

The Highpoint was a complete Thanksgiving Day dinner with a gift certificate worth$20 for the turkey and Reserve was a gift Certificate worth $20.Winners for the November 10 show were:Open Pony Champion -Anna Rose/Lucky - 29 pts.Res. The Late Night Riders wants to say a special thank you to Robyn Thornton forbringing a bunch of her girls to work the show. In the announcer booth and writingtimes all day in the cold wind were: Gene Moore, Miscelle Ward, Molly Jo Stark,Robyn Thornton, and Alyssa Vieira. In the arena judging we had: Jody Abel, TeresaBarosso, Judy Sharp, Charlie Moore, Dianna Merrick and Spring Krogue. Swingingthe gates all day were Donna Witkowski and Glenda Price. Thank you two ladies for agreat job. Helping set up and take down the events we had: Lucy Dickinson, HeatherWeaver, Janea Little, Molly Jo Stark, Robyn Thornton, Miscelle Ward, and AlyssaVieira. Thank you all for doing the work to make the show happen.

Our Free Show drawing for Workers Only had enough coupons for two Free Shows. The winners were Donna Witkowski and Alyssa Vieira. Congratulations Donna andAlyssa. Now you can ride for Free at the next show. When there are more than 15coupons in the Worker Drawing we always draw two riders. In addition to workercoupons all District 5 workers get free sodas and water from the snack bar.

The Mystery Jackpot was the very last event, Fig. 8 Flags and the pot was pretty goodat $100.00.

1D - Lea deMontigny on Galbraiths Gold Whiz won $40.00 with a time of 11.5262D - Charlie Moore on Rusty won $30.00 with a time of 15.2973D - Caroline Kimsey on Go Maverick Go won $10.00 with a time of 20.4234D - Chrystal Moore on Sting Em Pippi won $10.00 with a time of 21.7595D -Clair Amador on Lord Rayden won $10.00 with a time of 27.818

You can’t win if you don’t enter. Very seldom do the same riders win back toback jackpots. That’s because it’s never the same event. So next show giveyourself a chance to win and enter the Mystery Jackpot.

I passed out some special board “thank yous” from me to the board who worked sotirelessly this year on running our shows. I went back and forth on what to get thesespecial people who care so much about our district. I finally decided on some reallypretty engraved hoofpicks and purchased them. As I started handing them out, there

were some peculiar looks going back and forth between some of the board members. After I had given all the awards out, the board members had something special for me!Guess what it was? That’s right, a really beautiful engraved hookpick! Great mindsthink alike. Thanks guys! Look for nominations and board elections between now andApril.

DISTRICT 11SIMI VALLEY RIDERS

by Lynn [email protected]

It was December 1st & District 11 ushered in the Holiday season with a very cold day, which, in my opinion is better than a very hot day! Our 2nd show was a phenomenalsuccess. Mother Nature watered the arena the day before & once groomed it could nothave been better. Think I’m kidding? How about a Supreme time being run in our lil‘ol arena? Yep. Some of the CGA ROC riders came and joined us making for a verymemorable day. Seeing them in those jackets & watching them run the events wasinspiring. I think everyone tried just a little bit harder because of it. Of course, that’sonly if they weren’t already inspired by our awards banquet the week before whereour top five riders of 2007 received some mighty good-looking saddles. It was a happyending to the year & an exciting kick-off for the next one.Super big thanks goes out to Curtis Cox and Jim for their incredible donation to theclub. It certainly made our jackpot something to go after. THANK YOU Curtis andJim!!! Personal thanks to Kim Barnett for taking on the computer in the morning. It’s ahectic job and we really appreciate you stepping up. DISTRICT 12HIGH DESERT HUSTLERS

DISTRICT 14 RAILHEAD RIDERS - SANTA MARGARITA/ PALOMA CREEK AREA

By Coleen Pemberton

We had 1.5" of rain the day before our December High Desert Hustler show, and theforecast for show day was 42 degrees with 40 mph winds. To the delight of many(and the dismay of a few), we postponed the show. We will make up this show onSaturday, March 29 (the fifth Saturday in March). The days will be longer andhopefully a little warmer by then, but with La Nina, global warming, and crazy HighDesert weather, who knows!

Our next regularly scheduled gymkhana is Saturday, January 5, 2008. We wisheveryone a Merry Christmas and lots of good, safe riding in 2008. Call Dan at (760)868-8852 for information.

Thanks! Dan

I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and/or the holiday of your belief. I hopethe New Year brings you all good fortune. Hopefully, we will get sufficient rain tobring the hay prices back down but until diesel gets better, we will still be hurting alittle. And yet, the oneness we have with our equine partners is still cheaper thanrehab or a gym.

Anyway, going through our Winter no show season but we had a great showing forour Awards night. Margo Abatti obtaining the Culinary Arts center did a wonderfuljob on gourmet pizzas. News of competing in Las Vegas is exciting and I am surewe’ll hear more.

And the prizes..... They were especially nice. Big kudos to our sponsors to follow, butfirst.... our winners!!!

There were some amazing races going on here in the points. Between 1st and 5th inthe A Division, there was only a 32 point spread. Even just as amazing, there was onlya 16 point spread in the Future Champion class between 3rd and 7th place.

Even the ratings of Speed and Skill were only separated in places, by less than 5points.

Way to go and congratulations to all!!!! Our club wants to offer our biggest, sincerestTHANKS to our sponsors. All of our Division winners received hooded sweatshirtswith monogram district logos by Lisa Bradley. The buckles to the 1st and 2nd places(and beautiful they were) came from Red Bluff. Paso Polly who you see at several ofCGA’s larger events, provided all the other prizes. There were monogrammed haybags, assorted tack, shin boot sets, and to me, a beautiful pair of hand carved spurstraps. Please, if you see her, stop by and give her a personal thanks and that includesany of our sponsors as well.

A special added Thanks to Wes Womble who primarily prepares all the arenas withFloya Hull as back up and Vicky Womble, our full time announcer, it couldn’t happenwithout you. Honorable mention went to Riata taking over computers for MeaganAbatti, although Meagan and Margo does most of the paperwork between our districtand State. Some of us take for granted that we appear at the gymkhanas on theirscheduled dates and have no realization what it takes behind the curtains to keep itgoing.

Again THANK YOU !!!

Now, keep our 4 legged friends fed well for the cold and conditioned. They need theirblood circulated in this cold too!! Our 1st show in the new year is slated for March8th at the Railhead Arena. We have a rain date set for March 22nd just in case. Willbe seein’ you.

DISTRICT 27 - IONE/SUTTER CREEK JACKSON AREA CASTLE COUNTRY RIDERS

http://www.cga27.comBy Carole Lindstrom

The weather was cold early on December first but the sun warmed us up later and itwas a great day for Gymkhana. We had lots of new people come out and join usagain. A big Castle Country Riders welcome to Elizabeth Diekman, Renessa Jensen,Michelle Battista, Sarah Cobos, Robyn Berwick, Michelle and Tristan DeWitt, ElliePhillipsStephanie Knezovich and to Cindy Scoleri who brought her kids and students,Daniel Long, Allison Paretington and Madison Reese for their first Gymkhana. Andwelcome back to Sharon Ingham and Tina Kellogg. We love seeing all those newfaces and hope we’ll see you all again at our shows. Don’t forget to sign up for CastleCountry Riders year end awards. You only have to ride in 5 of our shows and ride atleast 5 events in each show. It’s easy and the prizes are great.

It’s not possible to thank all of you enough for all your wonderful help. Six judgesmakes it so much easier for everyone. It was great to see John Bradley there helpingout. We’ve missed you John. We hardly ever had to ask for help, you all just pitchedin and we sure appreciate it. It’s great to see all those dads out there. Thanks toDavid Cress, Curtis Jensen, Mark Schofield, Fred Templeton, Jerry Smith, JerryTamantini, Bill Stewart and my wonderful husband Ray Lindstrom. I’m sure therewere more out there whose names I didn’t get. We sure like having you guys with themuscles out there lugging that stuff around for us.

Dominique did another bang up job announcing between rides on the horse she stole(1 dollar doesn’t count, Dominique) from her husband. Sandy Worrell spent the day atthe computer and we sure appreciate her hard work. Lisa Harp got dragged up into thebooth to write times and then stayed when she found out how nice and warm it was upthere. Lauren Reif wrote times while she bounced that new baby on her knee. CindyWilliamson judged and worked in the arena. Rochelle Wood, Bailey DeWitt, MarcieStewart, Pam Field, Michelle Littlejohn, Kelly Pearson, Joyce Driggers, AmandaMartin, Allison Hardington, Roxie and Annie Gatley, Renee Templeton, Paula Schartz,Cierra Grayson and Robin Guthrie were all out there working. I know I’ve missedsome of your names and I apologize. There were so many helping hands that theshow ran smoothly and fun.

We ran a little later than we planned but that’s what happens when you have lots ofbeginners who are just learning all about this wonderful sport. Their speed and ourswill improve every time. We have to apologize for your having to run Barrels in thedark, though I didn’t see anybody get lost out there. We promise that won’t happenagain. Because it was cold and dark a lot of people loaded up and headed homebefore we gave out our high point and worker prizes. We’ll have your prizes and pinksheets for you at our next show. The Jackpot had $60.00 in it. Lisa Bradley took the1D check of $24.00, Taylor Lindstrom took both 2D and 4D on her two horses with atotal of $24.00 while Rebecca Tamantini and Christina Leaman took the 3 D and 5 Dchecks of $6.00 each. MOTHERLODE WRANGLERS By Kimberlie Roscelli

[email protected] had our last show for the winter season on Nov. 10; the 11th had to be cancelleddue to rain. Although some still wanted to try and ride I could vouch for how muchrain we had. My mother, niece and I decided to stay the night for the two day showsince we had so many horses there, 9 give or take. We were just settling in for thenight with our little space heater going when I noticed a big wet spot on my pillow. Iwanted to blame the dog but the basket ball size mark could not be from a bostonterrier. Upon further investigation I noticed a bigger spot on my mothers pillow, then Ilooked up, it was a leak in the seam of our trailer. So, here we are in solid rain trying toget a giant tarp over our gooseneck trailer with no ladder. Woman are so creative, weused the truck to climb on along with much patience and many tries of flailing the tarpup and over. Finally success. So I know how much it rained because I was as close asyou could get to sleeping in it. Not only was it too wet for us, it also proved to be toowet for Margaret’s 4 wheel drive pickup as she was stuck in the arena trying to load upobstacles at which point Perry came to her rescue with his larger 4 wheel drive andwas able to save her from the mud swamp.

Even though we had to cancel our 2nd show, enough people showed up for us to go onwith the awards ceremony for our club year end awards. Thank goodness there is nodress code for awards because I was one of at least 5 other people who stayed in theirpajamas; you cant put a price on comfort. I would call it a success, with only a fewhave yet to pick up their prizes. It was a memorable way to end the show season as mygroup made 3 trailer trips home. I will enjoy my winter break but I think we all will belooking forward to staring back up in the spring. One exciting new feature will be ourJuly 12th evening show which will be a team event play day, events to be announced. So, stay warm and enjoy the holiday season, see ya in the spring.

DISTRICT 45GYMKHANA RUSH RIDERS

SONOMA/MARIN COUNTY AREABy Annette Garcia

Greetings from the Gymkhana Rush Riders! Well let me tell you that November wasoutrageous! We finished up October with members running in the last race of an NBHASeries [Sarah Hambly took home 2 buckles!], had our Show on the 3rd, and some of uscompeted in a Team Penning up north so be sure to read all the details in the Rush RidersExpress posted on our web page http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/cgadistrict45/filesand select The Rush Riders Express December 2007.

Our Nov 3rd show was at Novato Horsemen’s Arena and the weather couldn’t have beenbetter for an absolutely fantastic show. We had over 20 riders & 3 new members – weran 7 Regular events with schooling runs, plus 2 Set-ups, and had a blast! Please welcomeour newest members; Nola Giddings, Sami Lamont, and Christina Elu who shared in ourfun. We missed the Middletown ladies; all but Pam Wilson were at that Team Penning, but Pam held her own with some really nice runs.

The Hambly sisters were there, and get this – as Becky is still on injured reserve Sarahrode Mr. Scout. Poor Scoutie didn’t know what hit him – Sarah really pushed him andgot a AAA time in Poles I which earned them the AAA Reserve High Point award. Evenwith her broken leg Becky was still able to help out in the snack shack & as a time writer.

Kim & Ashley were back, and brought their friend Sami who rode her Peruvian, Alehandra, and yes folks Peruvians can run, and Hurry Scurry, too! Nola brought her friend EvelynSpelman to see what we are all about and we look forward to seeing her ride Dominicoat a future Show. Kim & Kingpin got Reserve FC.

The Jackson’s came, and Billie had smoke’n runs on Emmie, winning High Point inAAA and within nano seconds of Supreme. Billie also ran her young Buckskin mare –Shasta – for the first time and earned High Point in FC. Congratulations to Billie whowent home with not one but three Free Show Coupons for both her High Point wins &the Workers Drawing.

Brittany & Mariah were hot, even with a mishap doing Poles [Mariah decided to jumprather than turn & Brittany owes us cookies!], they still came out of it with a Reserve inAA. Shelia Paik rode Popcorn Gal and did a nice job schooling her. Lori Smith [ourillustrious Secretary & Judge] & Myra had an awesome show earning Reserve in A.

The Merrill’s got their last rides in before Taylor’s leg surgery. Judy got a AA time inPoles 1 and Taylor got AA times in Barrels, Poles 1 & Speed Barrels. Christina Elu andher pretty little palomino paint mare did really well for their first show. Trish & Jessiewere in the groove and won High Point in A.

Annette & Shellie got some good rides in between judging with Shellie getting a AAAtime in Poles 1 and Annette earning High Point in AA. Poles 1 seemed to be the event atthis show as everyone had better than usual times.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Novato Horsemen’s for the use oftheir facilities, to Karen Kilian for getting out there in the cold and semi-dark to drag the

arena, and to the Sue & Dave Hambly for making sure the snack shack was open. Wegratefully thank you!

Congratulations to our Nov 3rd High Point Winners:[High Point Award was a FreeShow Coupon & Reserve was $15 Off Coupon towards a show]

Explanation of 5-D JackpotsFor All CGA State Sponsored Shows

Note: District’s may alter all the Jackpot options as they choose for local shows running jackpots orMystery jackpots

Riders may optionally enter a jackpot for any or all of the regular events. The cost is an additional $5.00per event, and a rider may choose to enter the Jackpot for none, some, or all of the regular events. Thesejackpots are unrelated to the rider’s division or age, and whether or not they are riding a horse or a pony. They are based strictly on the time the rider achieves in that event. Only the times of the Riders enteringthe Jackpots count. The size of the payout is determined by the number of riders in the jackpot. ThePayout is:

Fastest ride - 40 % of the jackpot2-D ride - 30 % of the jackpot3-D ride - 10 % of the jackpot4-D ride - 10 % of the jackpot5-D ride - 10 % of the jackpotCGA - None. All jackpot money is paid back to the riders.

2-D, 3-D, 4-D and 5-D rides are those that come the closest (without going faster) to the fastest timeof those entering the jackpot +(plus) the adjustment factor for that event. The adjustment factors arelisted below.

Event 2-D Adjustment 3-D Adjustment 4-D Adjust. 5-D Adjust.BAR + 1.380 + 2.761 + 4.141 + 5.521BR + 1.120 + 2.241 + 3.361 + 4.481F8F + 3.130 + 6.260 + 9.391 + 12.521F8S + 0.820 + 1.640 + 2.461 + 3.281HS + 1.564 + 3.127 + 4.691 + 6.255KH + 1.317 + 2.634 + 3.951 + 5.268P1 + 1.534 + 3.067 + 4.601 + 6.135P2 + 2.367 + 4.734 + 7.101 + 9.468QR + 1.587 + 3.174 + 4.761 + 6.348SBL + 1.204 + 2.407 + 3.611 + 4.815SBR + 0.814 + 1.627 + 2.441 + 3.255SSR + 0.544 + 1.087 + 1.631 + 2.175BT + 2.035 + 4.070 + 6.105 + 8.140

For example, if the fastest ride in Poles I was 10.990 seconds, and the jackpot was $400.00, then thatrider would receive $160.00. The rider closest to the 2-D time of 12.524 (10.990 + 1.534) withoutgoing faster would receive $120.00. The rider closest to the 3-D time of 14.057 (10.990 + 3.067)without going faster would receive $40.00. The rider closest to the 4-D time of 15.591 (10.990 +4.601) without going faster would receive $40.00. The rider closest to the 5-D time of 17.125 (10.990+ 6.135) without going faster would receive $40.00.
