MCTC Monroe County Technical Center Making Connections – Taking Charge
MCTC Program Spotlight: Agriculture The Agriculture department at MCTC offers four unique programs of study;
Agribusiness Systems, Animal Processing, Animal Systems, and Power,
Structure and Technical Systems (Agricultural Mechanics). Below is a
summary of MCTC’s programs.
The Agribusiness Systems Program of Study focuses on entrepreneurial and
technical skills and careers in the broad spectrum of Agriculture, Food, and
Natural Resources. This Program of Study offers the most flexibility of all
agriculture Programs of Study for students to select a specialization from
many areas: Advanced Agriculture Principles, Animal Science, Agriculture
Mechanics, Animal Processing.
The Animal Processing Systems pathway focuses on entrepreneurial and
technical skills and careers in the animal processing industry. Specializations
for this Program of Study prepare students for the retail industry and the
commercial plant industry.
The Animal Systems Program of Study focuses on entrepreneurial and
technical skills and careers in the areas of animal production and
management, animal science, livestock production, aquaculture, equine
science and companion animal care. The Program of Study offers four unique
specializations. Specializations are offered in Livestock Production, Companion
Animal Care, Aquaculture and Equine Science.
The Power, Structural and Technical Systems (Ag Mech) Program of Study
focuses on entrepreneurial and technical skills and careers in the agricultural
mechanics industry. Specializations for this Program of Study allow students to
pursue their interests in either agricultural structures or agriculture repair and maintenance.

A successful agricultural education program is built on the three
core areas of classroom/laboratory instruction, supervised
agricultural experience programs and FFA student organization
activities/opportunities.
The program is designed for delivery through these three
components as follows:
• Classroom/Laboratory Instruction – quality instruction in and
about agriculture that utilizes a "learning by doing" philosophy.
• Supervised Agricultural Experience Programs – all students are
expected to have an agriculturally related work-based learning
experience while enrolled in agricultural education courses.
• FFA Student Organization activities/opportunities – FFA activities
are an integral part of the agricultural education program that all
agricultural education students should participate in if they are to
fully benefit from their enrollment in the program.
MCTC’s Agriculture program of study delivers on all three areas.

MCTC is Making Connections – Taking Charge
MCTC students and staff members have been making connections and taking charge:
In August, Mr. Shawn Hill, Agriculture Instructor, was named MCTC Teacher of the Year.
In addition to his duties as instructor and FFA Advisor, Mr. Hill serves as MCTC
Faculty Senate Chairperson and a member of the school leadership team.
In October, MCTC learned that the Biomedical Science PLTW program would receive a
Program Modernization Grant. The grant award of $15,000.00 will fund additional
software and features for the Ares patient simulator mannequin, purchased last
year, also through a grant. Instructor Ms. Jessica Allen and students Kendra Karnes,
Jada Stutts, Kasadee Ferguson, Jacob Craft, Summer Weikle and James Sneddon
submitted the grant application last spring as part of their Simulated Workplace
experience. The grant will provide enriched learning opportunities for students in
several departments at MCTC; Biomedical Science PLTW, Health Science
Therapeutic Services, JROTC, and Law and Public Safety.
In In early December, Health Science Therapeutic Services Instructor, Mrs. Erin Sowers,
was appointed by OHFLAC as Program Coordinator. OHFLAC, Office of Health Facility
Licensure & Certification, is a division of the West Virginia Department of Health and
Human Resources.
Also in early December, Alternative School Instructor, Mrs. Lori Feamster was chosen as
a member of Monroe County Schools’ latest administrative certification cohort.
Members of the cohort were chosen based on several characteristics, including
academic achievement, leadership abilities, and interest in pursuing advanced
certifications.
