THE CHAIRMAN REPORTS A very warm welcome to our new Owners in Flat 14, Mrs Gillian Hill & Mr Michael Harold. Let us hope this spell of warm weather continues, and we can get out into the garden, it is your garden, enjoy it. John Blackwell

HEAD OF SERVICES COMES TO COURT The newly appointed RSL Head of Services, Kelly Wilshire, made her first visit to Fullerton Court on Wednesday, 9th May, to meet the Board over coffee, and to clarify in outstanding issues.

MEL CELEBRATES A BIRTHDAY

On Friday afternoon,11th May, one of our long serving Duty Managers, Mel Norris, celebrated her 70th birthday with Owners and Staff.

UNIVERSITY OF THIRD AGE HISTORY GROUP The Group met on 1st April ago to hear a talk on ‘Pilgrimages’. The most famous pilgrimages took place in the Middle Ages, supported by the Pope with aim of capturing Jerusalem and the Levant. Richard II and Henry II took part. The attacks by the Christians were successful in holding the area for some 200 years but eventually the Saracens prevailed. Other pilgrimages took place, notably to Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain which continue. A very detailed talk was given on 15th May on the history of the prominent shipbuilder – ‘Doxford & Sons and the Northumberland Shipping Co’. They were prominent in the first half of the 20th century, but more modern developments in other countries greatly reduced their role and Financial speculation virtually led their demise. The next meeting was on 25th May when the subject was ‘The Inquisition’. On 12th June there will a talk either on the ‘Development of Pilgrimages’ or on the ‘Domesday Books’. The end of term meeting will be on 26thJune. As usual all owners are welcome. Bill Small

THE MARRIAGE OF THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF SUSSEX On Saturday, 19th May, the Owners gathered together in the Lounge to watch the marriage ceremony of Prince Harry to his bride. This was followed by a very English lunch comprising Prawn & Crab Meet Salad, Beef Wellington, and Eton Mess. Thank you to Lin for all her effort.

CHILDREN ARE QUICK TEACHER: Why are you late? STUDENT: Class started before I got here. TEACHER: John, why are you doing your math multiplication on the floor? JOHN: You told me to do it without using tables.

TEACHER: Glenn, how do you spell 'crocodile?' GLENN: K-R-O-K-O-D-I-A-L' TEACHER: No, that's wrong GLENN: Maybe it is wrong, but you asked me how I spell it. TEACHER: Donald, what is the chemical formula for water? DONALD: H I J K L M N O. TEACHER: What are you talking about? DONALD: Yesterday you said it's H to O. TEACHER: Winnie, name one important thing we have today that we didn't have ten years ago. WINNIE: Me! TEACHER: Harold, what do you call a person who keeps on talking when people are no longer interested? HAROLD: A teacher.

CATERING COMMITTEE Tuesday,15th May

At our meeting we welcomed Sharon, our cook, who proved very helpful while new dishes were being discussed. The committee decided that chicken supreme will replace the rather bland creamy chicken bake and that poached haddock will be served instead of plaice to provide a more substantial meal. We can also look forward to enjoying French onion soup on some Fridays. The popularity of liver and bacon was once again discussed, and it was thought that diners were fairly evenly divided between those who liked it and others who did not. Therefore, it was decided to leave lambs liver and bacon on the menu because an alternative, such as jacket potato or omelette, is readily available to order in advance of the meal. As always, the comments book was reviewed with most remarks being complimentary and only two giving useful criticism. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 21st August 2018. John Bourne

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

This month we have a very welcome additional event on Friday afternoon, 29th June, when the Epsom Male Voice Singers, a heartily friendly group from 65-strong Epsom Male Voice Choir, have offered to entertain us as a compliment to their honorary life-time member Jack Nolan. By luck, their talented accompanist, Lynda Chang, is also free to come on this date. It is not to be missed, come and socialise with tea and cake afterwards. Jill Wood

RESIDENTS CHOICE As often stated we are most anxious to receive from owners and friends, their favoured musical DVDs and CD’s for presentation. In the interests of widening the genre, we would like to include light opera which formerly, was very popular at the Coliseum then sung in English. The music of classical composers such as Mozart, Bizet, Verdi and others are popular and catchy. On Friday, 8th June, we propose presenting Act One of Mozart’s ‘Don Giovani’. Programme details will be distributed as usual on the evening but additionally, prior to the music starting, a verbal synopsis of the story will be given in English. Do come along on the 8th June at 7.30pm to see if it works. Jack Nolan

OUR TRIP TO VIRGINIA WATER

Thursday,10th May A very pleasant and sociable excursion was made to Virginia Water, Windsor Great Park, by nine residents. Although the sun was shining most of the time there was a constant wind blowing across the water. Lunch was taken in the Pavilion café before strolling along the shore of the lake to enjoy the magnificent view. Some of us visited the Cascade waterfall and one intrepid lady ventured as far as the Roman ruins. Eventually the cool wind encouraged us to meet up again at the Pavilion for a hot cup of tea before returning home Our driver was most helpful but on the way his navigation device took us many miles out of our way before eventually arriving at our destination. I was beginning to wonder if we were heading for some other Virginia Water perhaps in Devon or

HERE's THE CHANCE FOR A

CHANGE OF SCENE

Take a bus to the Library to catch the CSRF coach that will take you to the Cotswold countryside for the day. Unusually, on this occasion, there is a choice of venue for the same coach journey. If you are interested in strange animals you may visit two very different zoos or, alternatively, if you would like to spend time in two fascinating villages there is Bourton itself and then a large model. Learn more about it? Read on. Bourton-on-the-Water, Tuesday 10th July- Deep in our favourite Cotswold Hills and close to the popular town of Burford we find Bourton-on-the-Water, often voted prettiest village. It straddles the River Windrush and is known for its low bridges and traditional stone cottages. During the journey there will be a brief educational stop at an unusual zoological centre, Crocodiles of the World, which is Britain’s first and only crocodile zoo. Also, on view are alligators, caimans, gharials and a Komodo dragon which is the largest type of lizard. Arriving at Bourton for lunch gives you time to plan your own afternoon activities in the village from a wide range of attractions including the famous Model Village, Underwater World and specialist shops. As an alternative, if you wish to go to Birdland to see the feeding of the King Penguins at 2.30pm and Pelicans at 3.15pm, the coach will finally call there. A reduced entry fee of £7.50 applies for a group and snack lunches are available here at the Flamingo Point cafe. Cost for coach and crocodile visit is £31 or including Birdland for £38. Please send appropriate cheque, sae, contact no and pick up point to Mrs Jill Wood. Tel: 8977 3552 at 17 Fullerton Court, 27 Udney Park Rd, Teddington, TW11 9BF, before 26th June.
