National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to contribute to building a reconciled Australia.

Every year, it is held between two significant milestones in Australia’s history, May 27 and June 3. May 27 is the anniversary of the 1967 referendum in which more than 90 per cent of Australians voted ‘Yes’ to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census and give the Australian Government the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The day before National Reconciliation Week, 26 May, is National Sorry Day, which was first held in Sydney in 1998 and is now commemorated nationally to remember and honour the Stolen Generations. June 3 marks the historic 1992 Mabo decision in which the High Court of Australia recognised native title – the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights over their lands did survive British colonisation.

The AFL’s annual round recognises and celebrates indigenous players and culture and is renamed in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls. Sir Doug, who epitomised the spirit of reconciliation, played 54 games for Fitzroy and was a brilliant all-round athlete. The first Aboriginal person to be knighted, he also served as Governor of South Australia and was devoted to the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Indigenous culture was recognised in fine style before the highlight match of the Sir Doug Nicholls round Essendon v Richmond ‘Dreamtime at the G’ clash on Saturday. I was lucky enough to watch the pre-game ceremony and my beloved Tigers win the Dreamtime Game with my favourite player taking out the Yiooken Award. Since 2006, the Yiooken Award has been awarded to the player judged best on ground in the match. It was also fabulous to see some of our past students performing before the game and the Tiwi Island performance which was coached by the daughter of a past staff member. A very significant game all round. All 18 clubs wear special indigenous-themed guernseys during the round. The Melbourne Football Guernsey was designed by a past parent of ours, famous Indigenous artist Mandy Nicholson who also designed and painted our Coral Park Artwork at the front of the school.

The senior students have been studying natural disasters as part of our

theme unit ‘Evolving Earth’.

S14 have proudly displayed their posters in the hallway. We have included QR codes on them

so if you have a smart phone you can hold it over the code and you will see our digital presenta-

tions. Or you can follow this QR code that will take you to the senior blog., where our Prezi’s

are on display.

Things we have learnt:

Tsunamis are big waves usually caused by

earthquakes they can be deadly. (Andy,

Orchard & Euini).

Volcanoes are mountains that open down-

wards to a pool of molten rock below the

earth. (Milan & Emmanuel).

Cyclones are giant, spinning, whirlwind

storms depending on where you live they

can be called hurricanes, typhoons or tropical cyclones here in Australia. (Aaron,

John & Koby)

Earthquakes are caused when rock under-

ground suddenly breaks along a fault which

makes the ground shake. (Leilani & Kierra).

You will learn many more interesting facts

looking at our display or viewing the senior

blog at http://cppssenior.global2.vic.edu.au/

Student Writing of the Week!

J11 students have been busy writing persuasive texts about

‘Why You Should Do Your Homework!’.

Do you think you should do homework? I hope so. If you

don’t, I’ll tell you why you should.

Firstly is because you can get smarter. If you are not

smart you might not get to the higher grades. If you

want to be smart do your homework often. You can even

get rewards from your teacher.

Secondly is because if you don’t you might get a bad re-

port. Then your mum and dad might not be proud of you.

They might ask your teacher why your report is so bad.

She might say because he or she didn’t do their home-

work.

Another reason is because you might go all the way back

to prep! You don’t want to go back to prep do you?

That’s all my reasons why you should do your home-

work more often. Do you agree with me now?

Merjem J11

What do you think? Should everyone do

homework? Well I think they should. Here are my

good reasons why.

First of all if you do your homework the teacher can

see what you know. If the teacher doesn’t know

what you know, she or he might think you don’t know

anything in homework and send you back to prep!

Sometimes if I have to do a narrative I wait until I

have an idea and write it in my homework book. I

always do my homework.

My second reason is if you don’t do your homework

you won’t know the answer and if you learn the same

thing tomorrow the teacher will be disappointed.

Curriculum Days in term 2 - Tuesday 21st June

is a pupil free day for Student Led

Conferences. Please put this date into your

calendar now.

Birthday Books Thank you to

Bailey for

donating a

birthday book

to our library.

We wish you a

very happy

birthday.

Have you seen our OSHC Library?

At OSHC last week the children started making their own books. We’ve been coming up with lots of ideas of what to put in them, from stories, to diaries to using them for art.

We also made a yummy carrot cake last week. It was fun trying new foods and even some kids who don’t like carrots liked our cake!

Bookings are now open for Holiday Club at Lynbrook. For more information visit https://www.campaustralia.com.au/HolidayClubs

Well done to our Star of the Week: Pasidu!

If you would like to donate a birthday book to

the school, please see Linda at the school office

or Tony in the library after school.

Can your child recognise all the letters of the alphabet?

Do they know all of their sounds?

Phonological awareness Phonological awareness is the ability to hear and manipulate the separate sounds within words (phonemes) and is a key foundation skill for early reading and spelling development. An example of phonological awareness is understanding that if the ‘p’ in ‘pat’ is changed to an ‘s’ the word becomes ‘sat’. When reading, if a child has problems with phonological awareness they might have difficulty recognising that sounds can be represented by letters or groups of letters within written words (this is often called phonics at school).

What can parents do to maintain and enhance their children’s reading skills in a natural, pleasurable way?

Establish a regular family reading time. Children of all ages enjoy being read to, and it’s a great opportunity to introduce vocabulary and concepts that children cannot access on their own. Classic children’s literature can be very challenging to read, but exposure is important because it’s part of our cultural heritage. Read it aloud! Are there books that you loved as a child? Read them aloud! Talk about these books

at the dinner table, and if a movie has been made about the book, perhaps watch it together as a family.

Lots of students bring cakes or lolly bags to school to

share on their birthdays which is lovely to celebrate

with friends but please, do not place party poppers

inside lolly bags as they are a safety hazard. They

will be removed before lolly bags are handed out so

please do not include them.

Do you know a teacher you would like to thank?
