Route 55 Jazz Orchestra was founded in the fall of 2006. Its membership consists of com-munity musicians who are serious about their commitment to making authentic Big Band Jazz in the tra-dition of Basie, Kenton, Miller, and more.

Holly Strings Youth Orchestra presents its first performance ever on Dec. 14.

The Nutcracker Tea Party is an interactive storybook dance adven-ture with crafts, tea party treats, and fun for the whole family.

Holly Springs Community Band presents "Winter Wonderland" as Santa stops by for pictures with the kids during this concert. Anyone who doesn’t get to see Santa during Main Street Christ-mas should grab their tickets while they can and say hello. The band is an all-volunteer group of musicians whose performances foster an appreciation for every kind of concert band music, includ-ing classical, semi-classical, Broad-way musicals, movie soundtracks, pop and rock, and marches.

Yard waste collection doesn’t follow a set schedule during our annual leaf col-lection season, which begins this month. Instead, our leaf vacuuming trucks ro-tate continuously through town. Trucks collect leaves every weekday, traveling neighborhood by neighborhood in a set order. Once they’ve been through the entire town, they start over again. Please rake leaves to the edge of your front yard, off the street pavement, for collection. Do not bag leaves. Keep leaf piles separate from other yard debris. Although Public Works crews strive to collect leaves as quickly as possible, col-lection can be delayed by the volume of leaves, inclement weather, holidays, and equipment breakdowns. That’s why it’s important that you do not mix sticks, rocks or other debris with the leaves. Materials other than leaves can damage the vacuum trucks, taking them out of service for repairs and slow-ing down collection.

The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is up-dating its transportation plan for southwestern Wake and northeastern Harnett counties. Here’s an opportunity to learn more and offer feedback:

CAMPO Transportation Workshop Drop-In Wednesday, Dec. 5 from 4:30 - 7 p.m. Bass Lake Retreat Center at 900 Bass Lake Road Presentations at 4:30 p.m. & 6 p.m.

The study will consider short-and-mid-term recommenda-tions that fit into a long-term vision for transportation. Comple-tion of the study is expected next spring. CAMPO is involved in determining which transportation pro-jects receive federal and state funding.

Locking your car is important not only when out shopping, but at home as well. Locking your car substantially reduces the likelihood that thieves will break into it. Street downtown for the Happy Holly

Days Christmas Parade on Saturday,

Dec. 8.

The parade begins at 11 a.m. at Main

Street and Holly Springs Road with ap-

proximately 90 entries. They include

floats, bands, dancers, decorated vehi-

cles, horses, marching groups, and

Santa, of course.

The Holly Springs Kiwanis Club is pre-

senter of the parade with the town as

sponsor.

The parade will proceed unless the

weather is really bad. There is no rain

date.

Spectators who have gathered along

Ballentine Street in past years to watch

the parade may want to choose a differ-

ent spot since not all entries will exit

there. Santa will ride down Ballentine,

however.

Main Street merriment begins on the

evening before the parade with Main

Street Christmas from 6-8 p.m.

The Parks and Recreation Department

sponsors this celebration.

Kids can visit with Santa until 7:15

p.m. in the lobby of Town Hall.

There will be performances by local

musicians, dancers, and actors in the

theater at the Cultural Center and at

Holly Springs United Methodist Church.

Performers include several school

choirs.

Hayrides are a big hit during Main

Street Christmas. This year, we’ll have

two hay wagons to accommodate the

crowd.

Holly Springs United Methodist and

Oasis Church will provide hot chocolate

and refreshments. Holly Springs Baptist

Church will have a live nativity scene.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Claus will be reading

to kids at Holly Springs Cultural Center

nearby at 300 W. Ballentine St. Kids

also can enjoy crafts.

Main Street Christmas wraps up with

the annual tree lighting on the lawn of

the Cultural Center at 8 p.m.

The Town of Holly Springs will be partnering with The Christmas Store again this holiday season. The Christmas Store is designed to help families in our local area who are in need during the holi-days. You can pick up Christmas tree tags with a child’s age and gender. Please return all gifts by Wednes-day, Dec. 5. They should not be wrapped. Volunteers will pick up the un-wrapped donations on Thursday morning, Dec. 6. Families needing assistance are referred to The Christmas Store by Western Wake Crisis Ministry, Dor-cas Ministries, The Fuquay-Varina Emergency Food Pantry, and Holly

Springs Food Cupboard. Guidance counselors and social workers in the schools also make referrals of children in need. The Christmas Store served over 1,200 children in our area last holi-

Former Mayor Pro Tem Jimmy Cobb has been named Holly Springs’ 2018 Citizen of the Year. His selection was announced at HollyFest. He was recognized at the Nov. 20 Town Council meeting. The Town created the Citizen of the Year nomination form and helped spread word about it. Nominations

went directly to selec-tion committee mem-bers, all of whom are former recipients of the award.

Cobb was honored for his service to Holly Springs Food Cup-

board, to South Wake Inclusive Playground Initiative, the Kiwanis Club, Christmas parade, Main Street Christmas, Kids Appreciation Day, the haunted hayride, and the Read Across America program. He served on the Planning Board and Board of Ad-justment before joining the Town Council.
