To the School Community, Our athletics day last week was fantastic with students participating in the full range of track and field events. We would like to thank the parents and volunteers who helped with the event as there was no way possible for it to happen without them. Sometimes we can learn more from students than they learn from us. It was astonishing to watch the students from Woodmans Hill Secondary Collage offer incredible support to our students. The thing that stood out most was in every race when a child couldn't make it, started walking, looked red faced and embarrassed, the secondary students ran down to them, encouraged them, ran (or walked) with them and made them feel special and that it was ok that they didn't win. In light of the Covid – 19 situation, the lesson I can draw from this is that the students of Woodmans Hill Secondary College demonstrated care for those who were a little behind the pace. So too, we as adults have the responsibility for those in our community who are most vulnerable. The elderly and disabled often already feel isolated from our community and the Coronavirus may make them even more marginalised. Please take a little moment to think of those nearest you who may fit this category, maybe give them a call and see if they need a little help. Dare I even say it, but perhaps you could do a pharmacy run, or try to get them some essentials from the supermarket. One of the great things about Australians is our ability to support those in need. Our recent Victorian Bushfire crisis is a perfect example of this. Only a few months ago we were donating “supplies” to those in need and in coming weeks and months there may be many more people in our community who will be in need. From a school perspective, we continue to be guided by the Department of Health and The Department of Education and Training. Dr Brett Sutton (Victorian Chief Health Officer and Human Biosecurity Officer) has provided advice that pre-emptive school closures are not likely to be proportionate or effective as a public health intervention to prevent community transmission of COVID-19 at this time. However we continue to monitor the situation daily, and in some cases hourly, so as to reassess and respond to the evolving circumstances. The changes to children’s routines and media exposure may cause concern or fear. I cannot express more clearly the importance for members of our community to act with clam, confidence and appropriate decision making. Children learn from modelling behaviours from adults and it’s incredibly important in this evolving situation that we demonstrate reasonable and well considered behaviour. Regards Ben Camps and Excursions, All camps and excursions are now either postponed or will be cancelled. This includes grade 2 sleepover. We will hold current reservations for camps later in the year and wait for further advice. International Arrivals, Everyone arriving into Australia from overseas from 15 March will be required to self-isolate for 14 days. This obviously includes students and staff who may be returning from overseas excursions or other travel. School Attendance, If you are choosing to isolate due to Covid-19 concerns please notify the school as alternative recording of absence data will be used in our system. Sporting events, Sporting events such as district cross country, athletics or Zone lightning premierships will be postponed until further advice is provided. Photos, School photos are currently scheduled to continue. Hygiene, We are encouraging all students to practice good hygiene. Soap is provided here at school, in toilets and were practical at all sinks in classrooms.

Mobile Phones and Wearable Devices In 2019 the Premier announced a ban on mobile phones in schools. At Caledonian we have developed a

Mobile Phone Policy that is consistent with DET expectations. The policy requires any phone to be handed

to a teacher at the beginning of the day for secure storage and that wearable devices with internet

capability are not to be worn (an example of a wearable device would be an apple watch). This policy is

consistent across all schools in the state and is fully implemented this year. A copy of the full policy is

available and will be uploaded to the school website.

No Hat No Play As we are a Sun Smart School students must wear a hat whenever they are outside at school during term 4 and Term 1. Students must have a school wide brimmed hat; please do not send along peak caps. Hats are available from Lowes or Beleza.

Kids Club at Brown Hill Uniting Church Kids Club is an after-school program offered to the Caledonian School community by the Brown Hill Uniting Church held in the church hall. This school term it is on Tuesdays 3rd, 10th and 17th March, 3.15 to 5.00pm. We begin with a light nutritious afternoon tea then settle in with a couple of fun games. The theme for the afternoon is based on a story from the bible which we explore in a child friendly way, to seek meaning for us to live as people inspired by Jesus. We finish with an art, craft or cooking activity. Our volunteers all hold Working With Children Checks and Brown Hill Church is a Safe Church.
