CalSouthConcussionManagement,EducationandAwareness

UndertheprovisionsofAssemblyBill2007,EffectiveJanuary1,2017, Californiajoinsroughly25otherstatesthatrequireyouthsportsorganizationstoestablishconcussionprotocolsfordealingwithsuspectedconcussionsinparticipants,informationonconcussionsforathletesandparents,andconcussiontrainingforcoachesandadministrators.

“Youthsportsorganization”meansanorganization,business,nonprofitentity,oralocalgovernmentalagencythatsponsorsorconductsamateursportscompetitions,training,camps,orclubsinwhichpersons17yearsofageoryoungerparticipate.

CONCUSSION TRAINING VERIFICATION PROCESS - ADMINISTRATORS

• Onayearlybasis,theyouthsportsorganizationshallofferconcussionandheadinjuryeducation,orrelatededucationalmaterialstoeachcoachandadministrator.• Eachcoachandadministratorshallsuccessfullycompletetheconcussionandheadinjuryeducationofferedatleastonce,eitheronlineorinperson.• ALLAdministrators shallcomplybeforebeingofficiallyregisteredandassignedtoaCalSouthteam.• Administratorpasscardswilldisplaytheconcussioncompletionicononthecardtoindicatecompliancewiththisrequirement.• AdministratorPasscardswithoutcompletingthecompliancerequirementareconsideredinvalid.• TheimplementationdateforthiscapabilityisJune1,2017.

• Anathletewhoissuspectedofsustainingaconcussionorotherheadinjuryshallbeimmediatelyremovedfortheremainderoftheday,andshallnotbepermittedtoreturntoanyathleticactivityuntilheorsheisevaluatedbyalicensedhealthcareprovider.

• Theyouthsportsorganizationshallnotifyaparent/guardianofthetimeanddateoftheinjury,thesymptomsobserved,andanytreatmentprovidedtothatathletefortheinjury.

• Theathleteshallnotbepermittedtoreturntoathleticactivityuntilheorshereceiveswrittenclearancefromalicensedhealthcareprovider.

• Ifthelicensedhealthcareproviderdeterminesthattheathletesustainedaconcussionorotherheadinjury,theathleteshallalsocompleteagraduatedreturn-to-playprotocolofnolessthansevendaysindurationunderthesupervisionofalicensedhealthcareprovider.
