The Government Leadership Award recognizes a deserving individual, team, department, or organization that has developed policies and/or programs to advance green building in Canada. The recipient has shown leadership in working within the public sector to effect change and improved performance in sustainable building practices, such as the adoption of a LEED policy for greening government buildings or the implementation of an innovative, sustainable infrastructure project.

GREEN BUILDING LEADERSHIP AWARD GOVERNMENT LEADERSHIP

CITY OF EDMONTON

The City of Edmonton, Mayor Iveson and the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy have asked mayors from around the world to sign the Edmonton Declaration. The Edmonton Declaration is a bold call-to-action for mayors to take the mantle of leadership on climate change, and amplify the message that rising greenhouse gas emissions severely impact cities. In brief, the Edmonton Declaration: engages all levels of government to recognize the immediate and urgent need for action that will limit global warming to 1.5°C; recognizes that cities face some of the most significant impacts of rising GHG emissions and bear much of the costs for adaptation and mitigation; reinforces the importance and role of cities in achieving the targets in the Paris Agreement; calls on the scientific community and other levels of government to provide better data and tools for science based decision making; and asks cities to look beyond their borders at the impact of consumption on GHG emissions.

ATB GREEN BUILDING TRIOVEST REALTY ADVISORS

ATB Place is a high use, office complex that continually strives for improvements in Green Building Excellence. From the highly motivated ownership, engaged managers and employees, consistent participation from the tenants and our extremely important service providers. ATB Place works towards increasing operational efforts to strengthen energy, water, and waste performance. Various programs are being developed, including energy, water and waste audits, retro commissioning and feasibility studies for existing processes with the intention to further engage our tenants and service providers. In 2018 we took the

leap to hire an Energy Manager along with aligning with The EEA Cohort program utilizing CLEAResult as the managing consultant.

PANDA PASSAGE CALGARY ZOO Honourable Mention

The Panda Passage project is a renovation to the existing elephant and rhino exhibit originally built in 1959. The project adapted the building and site with new large ETFE skylights, structural changes to create animal containment without the use of cage work, and a new back-of-house laboratory and nursery where specially trained staff care for the pandas. As sustainability was a major goal for The Zoo, the project pursued the International Living Future Institutes Living Building Challenge (LBC) petal certification. The LBC consists of a strict set of imperatives broken into seven focus areas called Petals, created on the principle that

ideal built environments should function as cleanly and efficiently as a flower. A project must earn at least three petals to become certified; the Panda Passage earned four petals, in the materials, equity, beauty, and health and happiness categories.

GREEN BUILDING EXCELLENCE INSPIRING HOME AWARD

WES NET ZERO ENERGY HOME DEWAALD DEVELOPMENTS

This home is built on a typical infill lot with the front facing East. Wisdom tells us this is not the ideal situation for a Net Zero Energy Home but most homes in the northern hemisphere are situated this way. We wanted to proof that you don’t need the perfect lot with the south facing rear to build a NZE home. We set out to do it anyways and solve these problems along the way with a rather unusual approach. Instead of starting with a floorplan we started with the size and shape of the roof. With the size of the roof we could determine the amount of solar we could install and based on that we designed our building envelope, mechanical systems and floor plans. The cost optimization was done with the help of an energy model and doing an iteration on insulation values and mechanical systems. At this point we were confident we could build the ultimate green home on the best budget possible. The result is a fantastic beautiful NZE home that uses a holistic approach, is budget friendly and has inspired many people to follow a similar path.
